To overcome the surface instability of traditional polymeric membranes especially with superwetting behaviour, a robust superhydrophilic surface was fabricated with nano-TiO2 inlaid on a hierarchical polylactide (PLA) ultrafiltration membrane via a spin coating process. Distinctly different from most previously reported nano-particle involved polymeric membranes, both the micro-/nano-architecture of the PLA membrane and the size matched nano-particle assembly constructed the robust superhydrophilic interface mimicking coral tentacle predatory behavior. The rigid surface based on the flexible polymeric membrane with the hierarchical architecture showed robust superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity even after long-term water washing treatment, which was also verified by the morphology, contact angle, XPS and adhesive force in contrast to smooth membranes. The as-prepared PLA membrane showed excellent separation performance for varieties of oil/water mixtures with a robustly high permeate flux (above 950 L m−2 h−1 under 0.1 MPa) and oil rejection (above 99%) even after 10 cycles of operation. Besides, the superhydrophilic PLA membrane exhibited outstanding anti-protein fouling properties. The PLA membrane showed relatively high BSA and ink rejection as well as water flux recovery and continuous separation stability due to rigid interface strengthening effects. The unique interface combination strategy between functional nanoparticles and polymeric membranes provided a window of opportunity for constructing robust polymeric membranes for advanced applications e.g. oil/water separation, ion exchange, in membrane catalytic reactors etc.

The lysine p-toluenesulfonic acid ionic liquid ([Lys][p-TSA]), one kinds of amino acid ionic liquids, was synthesized by one-step method, which was employed to control the interfacial structure and degradation behavior of poly(lactide)/poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blends. The [Lys][p-TSA] was incorporated into PLA/PBAT blends with different contents by melt blending, and the effect of [Lys][P-TSA] on the interfacial structure, thermal stability, crystallization behavior, rheological behavior and degradation behavior of PLA/PBAT blends were investigated. The SEM results demonstrate that [Lys][p-TSA] could enhance the compatibility between PLA and PBAT in the PLA/PBAT blends. Thermal gravimetric results showed that the incorporation of [Lys][p-TSA] into PLA/PBAT blends could not affect their thermal stability. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements showed that [Lys][p-TSA] can improve the crystallinity of PLA, and the rheological behavior of the blends indicated that [Lys][p-TSA] can enhance the chain mobility of PLA and PBAT. More importantly, the degradation behavior of the blends revealed that [Lys][p-TSA] could affect the distribution of lipase in PLA/PBAT blends, so that the relative degradation rate of each component of the blends was well-controlled. As the [Lys][p-TSA] content increased, the degradation rate of the PLA/PBAT blend in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution, artificial seawater, porcine pancreas lipase (PPL) solution and Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) solution was enhanced. When the contents of [Lys][p-TSA] was 4 phr in the PLA/PBAT blend, the weight loss of the blend in PPL enzyme solution reached to 31.59% after 49 days, which was 3.79 times higher than that of PLA/PBAT blend without [Lys][p-TSA]. The enzymatic degradation mechanism of the blends was studied by density functional theory (DFT) and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and it was found that [Lys][p-TSA] could control the distribution of lipase in the blends, which accelerated the enzymatic degradation of the PLA/PBAT blend. This study could provide some new way on enhancing the properties of PLA/PBAT blends while reducing the harm of microplastics.

Blending thermoplastic starch (TPS) with poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) is considered as one of the most promising ways to produce fully biodegradable and renewable biopolymers. However, these composite biopolymers face challenges such as, poor mechanical performance, inferior water vapor and ultraviolet barrier resistance, and weak antibacterial property due to the incompatibility of hydrophilic TPS with hydrophobic PLA and PBAT. In this work, Ag nanoparticles were uniformly in-situ grown on cellulose nanocrystal to prepare a novel silver nanoparticles loaded-cellulose nanocrystal (Ag-CNC). Then, antimicrobial TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films with enhanced mechanical properties, superior water vapor barrier capacity and highly UV-shielding effect were fabricated by introducing Ag-CNC and oligo (lactic acid) grafting starch (OLA- g -ST, an eco-friendly compatibilizer) into TPS, PLA and PBAT matrix. As expected, the introduction of Ag-CNC significantly improved antibacterial property and UV-shielding effect (283 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Moreover, the incorporation of OLA- g -ST and Ag-CNC into the composites resulted in a notable enhancement of the mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break increased by 77.95 % and 63.23 %, respectively) and water vapor barrier capacity (40.8 % increased) of TPS/PLA/PBAT composite films. Hence, the innovative fully biodegradable composite films displayed remarkable potential in the field of renewable biopolymers as well as multifunctional packages.

This is the first study that explores blending polylactic acid (PLA) with various biomasses, including food wastes─brewer’s spent grain (BSG), spent coffee grounds (SCG), sesame cake (SC), and thermoplastic starch (TPS) biomass to create composite gastric floating drug delivery systems (GFDDS) through 3D printing. The aim is to investigate the influence of biomass percentage, biomass type, and printing parameters on their corresponding drug release profiles. 3D-printed (3DP) composite filaments were prepared by blending biomasses and PLA before in vitro drug release studies were performed using hydrophilic and hydrophobic model drugs, metoprolol tartrate (MT), and risperidone (RIS). The data revealed that release profiles were influenced by composite compositions and wall thicknesses of 3DP GFDDS capsules. Up to 15% of food waste could be blended with PLA for all food waste types tested. Delivery studies for PLA-food wastes found that MT was fully released by 4 h, exhibiting burst release profiles after a lag time of 0.5 to 1.5 h, and RIS could achieve a sustained release profile of approximately 48 h. PLA-TPS was utilized as a comparison and demonstrated variable release profiles ranging from 8 to 120 h, depending on the TPS content. The results demonstrated the potential for adjusting drug release profiles by incorporating affordable biomasses into GFDDS. This study presents a promising direction for creating delivery systems that are sustainable, customizable, and cost-effective, utilizing sustainable materials that can also be employed for agricultural, nutraceutical, personal care, and wastewater treatment applications.

Herein, an amphiphilic block copolymer CD44-targeting peptide-conjugated polyethylene glycol-block-hydroxyethyl starch-block-poly (L-lactic acid) (CD44p-conjugated PEG-b-HES-b-PLA) are synthesized, which could self-assemble into the pH-responsive and CD44-targeting polymer micelles against breast cancer cells MDA-MB-231. Emodin (Emo) is a natural anthraquino with pharmacological activities in anti-tumor effects. However, Emo suffers from poor water solubility, low biocompatibility, rapid systemic elimination, and off-target side effects, resulting in unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. Nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems have proven great potential for cancer chemotherapy. The constructed polymeric micelles Emo@CD44p-PM have exhibited an average size of 154.5 ± 0.9 nm characterized by DLS and TEM. Further, the Emo@CD44p-PM have effective Emo-loading capacity, good thermal stability, and pH responsiveness. Intracellular uptake study shows the enhanced cellular internalization of Emo@CD44p-PM due to the increased exposure of CD44p enhances the cellular internalization of Emo@CD44p-PM effectively. Furthermore, the in vitro results showed Emo@CD44p-PM has been observed good biocompatibility and anti-tumor effects. Therefore, the polymeric micelles Emo@CD44p-PM provide a promising delivery strategy of targeted therapy for breast cancer.

Water and soil pollution caused by Cu 2+ is not conducive to sustainable development of environment and could cause damage to environment and even human body. Currently, fluorescent sensor solutions analysis method has been used for Cu 2+ detection, but they also suffer from drawbacks including easy leakage, difficult storage, and inaccurate. Herein, a green solid-state biomass fluorescence platform (NBU-CDs) consisting of xylan-derived carbon dots (U-CDs) and polylactic acid/polycaprolactone (PLA/PCL) was designed by using in situ electrospinning technology. The prepared NBU-CDs fluorescence platform showed good fluorescence effect and can be served as fluorescence sensor for detecting Cu 2+ with high sensitively, selectively and low detection limit (LOD = 0.83 μM). The practical applications of NBU-CDs exhibited high specificity for Cu 2+ detection in zebrafish, water samples (school lake, Xuanwu Lake and Yangtze River) with high recovery rates of 97 %–104 % and soil (pond soil, grassland soil and bamboo soil) samples, respectively. The developed fluorescence platform was utilized to predict water and soil safety by monitoring Cu 2+ concentration and provides a new strategy for Cu 2+ detection.

Amidst the relentless innovation in materials science and bone tissue engineering, the quest for next-generation bone graft materials with bespoke functionalities has emerged as a pivotal research domain. This study produced and characterized a novel bone healing material. First, we explained how three-armed polylactic acid (3s-PLA) was created in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO 2 ) and utilized as a matrix material. Following that, we described how the solution blending approach was employed to create three-armed polylactic acid/chitosan/nanohydroxyapatite (3s-PLA/CS/nHA) composites. The composites were then drug-loaded with prednisone acetate as a model drug utilizing the supercritical impregnation technique. Ultimately, the Ritger-Peppas model was substantially followed by the drug release of the drug-loaded composites when the in vitro drug-release kinetics of the drug-loaded materials were investigated. The porous structure of 3s-PLA was demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) hydrogen spectroscopy. Morphologic studies using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the homogeneous distribution of drug in the matrix of the mixtures as well as the porous structure of 3s-PLA and 3s-PLA/CS/nHA. The hydrophilicity of 3s-PLA/CS/nHA was examined by the use of water contact angle (WCA), revealing that the material in question has a hydrophilic water contact angle of 45.69°. Furthermore, research was conducted using one-way tests and investigations to characterize in vitro drug-release carrier materials under various drug conditions and temperatures. The carrier material consistently released up to 84.8% of prednisone acetate over the course of 72 h, demonstrating good control over prolonged release, according to the results. Graphical abstract

Wound infection caused by excessive exudate leads to overhydration of wounds and prevents wound healing. Thus, there is a need for a wound dressing to be developed that can unidirectionally export excess biological fluid while inhibiting bacterial infection. Herein, a nanofibrous bilayer membrane with a unidirectional water transport function was fabricated by electrospinning as a novel wound dressing, which can export excess biological fluid efficiently and further inhibit bacterial infection. The inner layer of the bilayer nanofiber membrane is polylactic acid (PLA)-zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, which are hydrophobic and antibacterial. The outer layer is polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-sodium polyacrylate (SPA) nanofibers, which are hydrophilic and liquid-absorbent. The bilayer nanofibrous membrane's morphology, mechanics, thermal stability, wettability , water absorption, gas permeability, and unidirectional water transport ability were characterized and evaluated. The study showed that the nanofibrous bilayer membrane exhibited excellent physicochemical properties and biological performance, and its mechanical properties can reach 4.6 MPa. In addition, when the thickness of the hydrophobic layer is 3 µm and the thickness of the hydrophilic layer is 44 µm, the double-layer fiber membrane can effectively export the excess biological fluid in 5.09 s and prevent the wound from wetting again. The nanofibrous bilayer membrane with excellent water absorption, air permeability , thermal stability, and mechanical strength provides a feasible solution for chronic wound healing.

Antibiotics play an essential function in treating various diseases. However, their overuse has led to water pollution and food safety issues. This work discusses a highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent flexible sensor based on multifunctional 4-MU@ZIF-8@PLA-PEG composite film prepared using a low-toxicity, eco-friendly and self-assembly method. The sensor combines the luminescent properties and structural tunability of ZIF-based composites with the processability and flexibility of polymers. The 4-MU@ZIF-8@PLA-PEG sensor can detect tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC⋅HCl), and doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX⋅HCl) with dual-emission ratiometric fluorescence, exhibiting a visible color change from blue to yellow, with detection limits of 0.058 nM, 16.806 nM, 2.113 nM and 20.510 nM, respectively. The fluorescence characteristics exhibit excellent linear relationships with TC detection in tap water and milk, and show inhibition rates of 87.27 % and 76.61 % against E. coli and S. aureus . With its antibacterial activity, visual detection, high sensitivity, and short detection time, this sensor has significant potential for detecting antibiotics in aquatic environments and food safety applications.

Modification of polylactic acid (PLA) is a promising strategy for the next generation of bioresorbable vascular stent biomaterials. With this focus, FeMOFs nanoparticles was incorporated in PLA, and then post loading of CO was performed by pressurization. It showed FeMOFs incorporation increased hydrophilicity of the surface and CO loading, and CO release was sustained at least for 3d. It is well acknowledged NETosis and macrophage mediated inflammation are the principal effectors of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, and it further increases the risk of late stent thrombosis and restenosis. In this study, the effects of CO release of PLA/FeMOFs/CO on NETosis and macrophage behavior were thoroughly explored. In vitro evaluation results showed that PLA/FeMOFs/CO significantly inhibited neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release and neutrophil elastase (NE) expression by reducing intracellular ROS in a simulated inflammatory environment. It reduced LPS-induced macrophage inflammation with decreased TNF-α expression and increased IL-10 expression. Meanwhile it enhanced endothelial cell activity and growth in inflammatory environment, and inhibited platelet adhesion and activation. In vivo implantation results confirmed that PLA/FeMOFs/CO reduced the macrophages and neutrophils mediated inflammatory response, thus reduced the neointimal hyperplasia. Overall, PLA/FeMOFs/CO effectively prevented the inflammation and restenosis associated with PLA implantation. Our study provides a new strategy to improve the immunocompatibility of PLA implant materials.

Poly(propylene carbonate-co-phthalate) (PPC-P), limited by inferior melt strength and heat resistance, exhibits poor foamability and thermal stability. This study enhances PPC-P through biodegradable PLA incorporation and HDI-induced dynamic vulcanization of terminal hydroxyl groups, improving the interfacial compatibility. The gel contents, rheological properties, crystallization behaviours, mechanical properties, compatibility and microstructures of the PPC-P/PLA blends are investigated in detail. By adjusting the compatibilizer-NCO dosage and PLA contents, the melt strength and viscoelasticity of the blends are effectively enhanced and regulated. Enhanced interfacial compatibility among PPC-P and PLA phases, improves the tensile strength and elongation at break of PPC-P/PLA composites, with values of 48.2 MPa and 12.9%, respectively. By using the sub-critical CO 2 as blowing agent, light weight and low-shrinkage PPC-P/PLA foams with well refined cell structures are successfully obtained, which can be attributed to the improved melt strength and the induced thermal stability. The relationship between the crosslinked-crystalline network and the foam quality are established, including CO 2 solubility, cell microstructure, and dimensional stability. PPC-P/PLA foams show refined microstructures (cell size < 50 μm, cell density > 1.5×10 9 cells/cm 3 , VER > 20), and low shrinkage (< 25%). Here, the crosslinks and crystals play multiple essential roles in increasing the melt strength and foamability of PPC-P, providing a widely applicable low-shrinkage strategy, which is crucial for the biodegradable foams.

Polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) are an important category of drug delivery systems, and their in vivo fate is closely associated with delivery efficacy. Analysis of the protein corona on the surface of NPs to understand the in vivo fate of different NPs has been shown to be reliable but complicated and time-consuming. In this work, we establish a simple approach for predicting the in vivo fate of polymeric NPs. We prepared a series of poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(d,l-lactide) (PEG-b-PLA) NPs with different protein binding behaviors by adjusting their PEG densities, which were determined by analyzing the serum protein adsorption. We further determined the protein binding affinity, denoted as the equilibrium association constant (KA), to correlate with in vivo fate of NPs. The in vivo fate, including blood clearance and Kupffer cell uptake, was studied, and the maximum concentration (Cmax), the area under the plasma concentration–time curve (AUC), and the mean residence time (MRT) were negatively linearly dependent, while Kupffer cell uptake was positively linearly dependent on KA. Subsequently, we verified the reliability of the approach for in vivo fate prediction using poly(methoxyethyl ethylene phosphate)-block-poly(d,l-lactide) (PEEP-b-PLA) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone)-block-poly(d,l-lactide) (PVP-b-PLA) NPs, and the linear relationship between the KA value and their PK parameters further suggests that the protein binding affinity of polymeric NPs can be a direct indicator of their pharmacokinetics.
