ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO/pebax mixed matrix membranes: enhanced CO2 separation performance through interfacial design and synergistic effects

Huiping Huang,Dan Zhao,Yuanfa Liu,Shuhui Chen,Lele Wang,Jizhong Ren

With the escalating environmental challenges posed by CO 2 emissions, particularly the greenhouse effect, the development of efficient CO 2 utilization and storage technologies have become critically important. The mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have emerged as promising candidates for gas separation due to their superior permeability and selectivity. However, practical applications are often hindered by issues such as nanoparticle agglomeration and poor compatibility between fillers and polymer matrices. In this study, a pre-assembly strategy was proposed. Through 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) served as a molecular bridge connecting the ZIF-67 with the polydimethylsiloxane-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-PEO) block copolymer, the ternary ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO nanofluid was constructed, which was subsequently blended with Pebax1657 to fabricate high-performance MMMs for CO 2 separation. Comprehensive characterization of the ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO/Pebax1657 MMMs was conducted using SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, and DSC techniques. The results demonstrated that the ternary blending strategy involving ZIF-67, Hmim, and PDMS-PEO not only significantly enhanced the dispersion stability of ZIF-67 nanoparticles but also improved their compatibility with the polymer matrix. Remarkably, the incorporation of ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO nanofluid led to substantial improvements in CO 2 permeability while maintaining selectivity. The membrane with 20 wt% ZIF-67-Hmim-PDMS-PEO demonstrated CO 2 /N 2 selectivity significantly surpassed that of the membrane prepared without pre-assembly. The membrane containing 30 wt% nanofluid exhibited a 235% enhancement (343.0 Barrer) in CO 2 permeability compared to pristine Pebax1657 membranes, with the selectivity of 51.2, reaching the 2008 upper bound for CO 2 /N 2 separation. These findings highlight the effectiveness of our approach in addressing key challenges in MMMs development for advanced gas separation applications.

Design and Performance Evaluation of Amino Acid-Decorated UiO-66-NH2/Pebax Mixed Matrix Membranes for Efficient CO2 Separation

Jing Xiaochun,Zhao Wei,Bei Pengzhi,Liu Hongjing,Dai Yan,Zhao Xu,Zhang Chengpeng,Shi Meiling,Zhang Ying

To advance CO 2 separation technologies, lysine-decorated UiO-66-NH 2 (LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 ) fillers were synthesized via a lysine modification and integrated into a Pebax-1657 matrix, yielding high-performance mixed matrix membranes. The carboxyl groups of the amino acids provide nucleophilic sites, promoting stronger interactions between LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 and CO 2 molecules. Moreover, the N–H and C = O bonds present in LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 facilitate hydrogen bonding with complementary C = O and N–H functional groups in the Pebax polymer backbone. These interactions significantly improve filler–polymer compatibility, enhancing interfacial adhesion and achieving uniform filler dispersion within the membrane matrix. Characterizations conducted via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed successful synthesis of the LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 filler particles, exhibiting high crystallinity, uniform distribution within the polymer matrix, superior thermal stability, and absence of discernible interfacial defects. Compared to pristine Pebax membranes, the LYS-UiO-66-NH 2 /Pebax MMM containing 3 wt% filler exhibited a CO 2 permeability of 104.62 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 85.75 at 30℃ and 0.1 MPa, corresponding to increases of 74.16% and 75.61%, respectively, thereby surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. This work demonstrates the considerable potential of the designed MMMs for highly efficient CO 2 separation.

Free volume regulation in poly(ionic liquid)-modified MOF-808/pebax MMMs for enhanced CO2 separation: insights from positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy

Chao Tang,Guowei Yang,Bing Wu,Guangjian Chai,Dian Qu,Chun Chen,Zhihong Yang,Jian Sun,Jianmei Xu,Zhiquan Chen,Qihang Wang,Wei Zhou

PIL modification tailors MOF-808 pore environment and CO 2 -affinitive sites. • PIL-modified MOF-808 improves filler-Pebax interfacial compatibility. • PALS reveals reduced FFV in PIL-modified MOF-808/Pebax MMMs. • The optimized MMM surpasses the 2008 CO 2 /N 2 Robeson upper bound. • CO 2 solubility gain outweighs diffusivity loss despite reduced free volume. Carbon capture is an important strategy for mitigating climate change, and membrane-based CO 2 separation offers advantages such as low energy consumption, operational simplicity, and continuous operation. Incorporating metal-organic frameworks (MOF), improving the interface between MOF and polymers, and introducing sites with CO 2 affinity are effective approaches for enhancing mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) performance. In this study, poly(ionic liquid) (PIL)-modified MOF-808 fillers were synthesized through in situ polymerization and incorporated into Pebax membranes. The PIL modification adjusted the pore environment of MOF-808, introduced imidazolium and -COOH groups, and strengthened interactions between the filler and Pebax, thereby restricting Pebax chain mobility. The optimized MMM exhibited a CO 2 permeability of 124.57 Barrer at 0.1 MPa and 35 °C, with CO 2 /N 2 selectivity surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound and CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity also substantially improved. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) revealed a reduction in fractional free volume compared with pristine Pebax, while time-lag analysis showed a corresponding decrease in gas diffusivity. In contrast, the CO 2 solubility coefficient increased markedly because of the CO 2 affinity introduced by PIL. The increase in CO 2 solubility was larger than the loss in diffusivity, leading to enhanced CO 2 permeability and selectivity despite reduced free volume. By combining PALS with time-lag analysis, nanoscale free volume evolution was connected with diffusion and solubility contributions. These results show that PIL-modified MOF-808 changes the balance between diffusivity and solubility in MOF/Pebax MMMs and clarify why CO 2 transport can be improved even when free volume and diffusivity decrease. Hollow monocrystalline silicalite-1 hybrid membranes for efficient pervaporative desulfurization

Fusheng Pan,Weidong Li,Ye Zhang,Jie Sun,Meidi Wang,Hong Wu,Zhongyi Jiang,Ligang Lin,Baoyi Wang,Xingzhong Cao,Peng Zhang

Hollow monocrystalline silicalite-1 (HMS) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and firstly incorporated into poly(ether- block -amide) (Pebax) to prepare hybrid membranes. The uniformly dispersed HMS in Pebax matrix interrupt the crystalline region and optimize the free volume property. The micropores on the HMS shell enhance the selectivity because of sieving effect, whereas the inner cavity benefits the rapid diffusion of penetrant and elevates the flux. When the content of HMS (200 nm) is 20 wt %, the hybrid membrane possesses a permeation flux of 20.63 kg/(m 2 h) and an enrichment factor of 6.11 (82% and 23% higher than that of Pebax membrane, respectively), which surpass the upper bound of the state-of-the-art reported polymeric membranes. Moreover, the hybrid membranes display the remarkable antiswelling and long-term operation stability. This is a step forward in fabricating the hybrid membranes with superior separation performance by incorporating porous fillers with hollow structure. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J , 65: 196–206, 2019

Upgrading CO2/CH4 separation performances of Pebax-based mixed-matrix membranes incorporated with core/shell-structured ZIF-L(Co)@ZIF-8 composite nanosheets

Yong Liu,Chao Wu,Zhongming Zhou,Wei Liu,Hongyu Guo,Baoquan Zhang

The development of high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with satisfactory structure stability has attracted much attention for the past few years. The rational design and synthesis of fillers to well coordinate themselves in the polymeric matrix is still challenging. The core-shell structured fillers were synthesized via the heteroepitaxial growth of ZIF-8 on ZIF-L(Co) surface (ZIF-L(Co)@ZIF-8), which were then embedded into Pebax to fabricate MMMs for enhanced CO 2 /CH 4 separation. The synthesized fillers and MMMs were characterized via SEM with EDS mapping, TEM, XRD , FIIR and nanoindentation measurements. The effects of ZIF-L(Co)@ZIF-8 loading and filler components on gas separation performance were studied with the evaluation of membrane stability. The experimental results indicated that the filled ZIF-L(Co)@ZIF-8 could be evenly distributed within the bulky Pebax. The synergistic effect of the core-shell structured fillers in adsorption and molecular sieving endowed the synthesized MMMs with superior gas separation performances. The optimal separation performance is achieved for the MMM containing 3 wt% of ZIF-L(Co)@ZIF-8 with a CO 2 permeability of 145.7 Barrer and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 40.9, corresponding to 79.1% and 110.1% increases over pure Pebax membrane.

Mesoporous metalated covalent organic framework hybrid membrane for efficient VOCs separation

Taotao Gao,Jiating Liu,Fusheng Pan,Xingchun Li,Hongju Da,Ming Xue,Xiangyu Cui,Han Zhang,Jian Lu,Zhongyi Jiang

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are pollutants detrimental to human health and the environment, necessitating the development of efficient separation technologies to support sustainable societal progress. Hybrid membranes incorporating metalated covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) have shown great potential for VOCs separation due to the synergistic combination of polymer processability and the selective adsorption capacity of MCOFs. However, the performance of conventional MCOFs is limited by their microporous structures, which restrict molecular diffusion and accessibility to metal active sites. Herein, we have designed a mesoporous Cu(I)-metalated COF (Cu 3 L 3 -BD) with a pore diameter of 3.8 nm, which was further incorporated into poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax) matrix to fabricate hybrid membranes (Pebax-Cu 3 L 3 -BD) for VOCs separation. The mesoporous channels facilitate improved gas transport and maximize exposure of Cu(I) coordination sites, thus enhancing the dissolution-diffusion process and improving the selectivity of Pebax-Cu 3 L 3 -BD. With a filler loading of 3 wt%, the Pebax-Cu 3 L 3 -BD exhibited optimal toluene permeance of 1.67 × 10 −6  mol μm m −2 s −1  Pa −1 and selectivity of 730, with the stability maintained over 120 h.

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with amine-functionalized ZIF-L for enhanced CO2 separation performance

Zikang Qin,Yulei Ma,Wentao Du,Jing Wei,Jia Song,Xinyue Fan,Lu Yao,Lin Yang,Yuanfa Zhuang,Wenju Jiang,Zhongde Dai

Amine-functionalized Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) stand out as highly promising materials in membrane separation technology. Nevertheless, the incorporation of amine-functionalized additives may lead to uncontrollable alterations in MOF morphology. Two intact blade-like MOFs (PEI (Polyethylenimine)-ZIF-L and PAMAM (Polyamidoamine)-ZIF-L) were successfully synthesized by controlling the conditions and then introduced into Pebax 2533 to fabricate Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMMs). Hydrogen bonding and other interactions with Pebax can be formed by PEI-ZIF-L and PAMAM-ZIF-L to enhance interfacial compatibility. Simultaneously, a reversible reaction with CO 2 molecules can be undergone by the amine groups, resulting in facilitated transport in MMMs. The CO 2 separation performance of the MMMs is enhanced by this process, with the facilitation being more pronounced under humid conditions. Under humid conditions, the CO 2 permeabilities of Pebax-PEI-ZIF-L (2 wt%) and Pebax-PAMAM-ZIF-L (2 wt%) MMMs were 639.4 Barrer and 702.7 Barrer, respectively, while the CO 2 /N 2 selectivities were 26.68 and 24.35, respectively. Both permeability and selectivity exhibited a significant increase of 200% and 130%, respectively, compared to pure Pebax. Furthermore, the MMMs demonstrated excellent long-term stability during 72 h of continuous operation in a humid environment, showcasing significant potential for industrial applications, particularly in humid flue gas carbon capture.

In-situ synthesis of ZIF-8 gel network in mixed matrix membranes for enhanced CO2/N2 separations

Xiaoting Feng,Chenlu Liu,Kunkun Ren,Xinglei Zhao,Longjie Liu,Keming Zhang,Xiaohe Tian,Qingnan Wang,Xiangyu Liu,Yueyangchao Yu,Tianhe Gu,Shaofei Wang

The urgent need for efficient CO 2 capture technologies to mitigate climate change has driven the advancement of membrane-based separation systems. We report a mixed matrix membrane design through the in-situ growth of a ZIF-8 gel network within a Pebax-1657 matrix. By tuning the solvent ratio and concentration of modulator, ZIF-8 gel rather than particles are formed within the polymer, establishing a three-dimensional interconnected MOF network that ensures homogeneous filler dispersion and creates continuous gas transport nanochannels. The optimized membrane achieves a remarkable CO 2 permeability of 183.9 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 73.3, surpassing the 2008 Robeson upper bound. These values represent 190.4 % and 34.9 % enhancements in permeability and selectivity, compared to the pristine polymer. The membrane also demonstrates robust operational stability and maintains > 95 % of its initial performance over 60 days. This work offers a promising solution to creating continuous channels in CO 2 separation membranes.

Construction of bionic enzyme gas channels on the surface of PMP hollow fiber membrane for rapid CO2 removal in ECCO2R system

Xiaoyun Wang,Keyi Wang,Xing Lv,Jiangwei Chen,Qingguo Li,Rizhi Chen,Huiqin Zhang,Yangming Cheng,Ting He,Zhaoliang Cui

The extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO 2 R) system is a life-support technique that has been shown to facilitate a protective ventilation strategy. When the lung disease cannot remove carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in time, resulting in CO 2 retention, ECCO 2 R is used to remove the excess CO 2 . As the key component of the artificial lung, the gas transport performance of the membrane determines the CO 2 removal capacity of the membrane lung, which should present high CO 2 selectivity to increase the efficient CO 2 removal rate. In this study, a biomimetic metalloenzyme, ZIF-8-NH 2 , was prepared to mimic the function of carbonic anhydrase (CA). The pore in ZIF-8-NH 2 was constructed to act as gas channel, in order to enhance the CO 2 /O 2 selectivity. ZIF-8-NH 2 /Pebax, which has functions similar to those of CA and gas channel (AQP1), was coated on the surface of poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) membranes to fabricate the composite membrane. The results confirmed that the CO 2 /O 2 selectivity of the ZIF-8-NH 2 /Pebax composite membrane was 7.4, which was 7.5 times higher than that of the pristine PMP membrane (1.0). The protein adsorption and thrombin time were 35.5 % lower and 34.4 % higher than those of PMP hollow fiber membrane (44.9 μg/cm 2 and 27.6 s), respectively. These results demonstrated that the prepared composite membrane possessed good blood compatibility. Additionally, an in-vitro blood circulation device was established to comparatively evaluate the hemocompatibility and CO 2 removal efficiency of PMP and the composite membrane modules under dynamic blood flow. Meanwhile, the corresponding results exhibited that the modified coating has good biosafety, implying that the mentioned materials can be safely applied in clinical trials.

A universal approach to turn UiO-66 into type 1 porous liquids via post-synthetic modification with corona-canopy species for CO2 capture

Dechao Wang,Yangyang Xin,Xiaoqian Li,Feng Wang,Yudeng Wang,Weirui Zhang,Yaping Zheng,Dongdong Yao,Zhiyuan Yang,Xingfeng Lei

Porous liquids (PLs), an emerging class of liquid materials with permanent porosity and good fluidity, have shown great potential in gas capture and separation. However, directly turning metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) into type 1 PLs via post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy with corona-canopy species has not been reported till now. Moreover, challenges including reducing the cost and simplifying the synthesis process are daunting. In present study, we propose a universal approach to turn UiO-66 into PLs via post-synthetic modification strategy with core-corona-canopy structure using organosilane (OS) corona and oligomer canopy species. The ionically-tethered canopy species endow UiO-66 with good liquid-like behaviors at room temperature. CO 2 and N 2 adsorption–desorption behaviors revealed that PLs possessed great potential in CO 2 selective adsorption separation. Meanwhile, the enhanced CO 2 selective capture sites were determined. As a proof-of-concept, the as-prepared UiO-66-liquid-M2070 PL was incorporated into Pebax-1657 polymer matrix to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The excellent dispersion ability, porous structures, and corona-canopy species contributed to the enhanced CO 2 selective permeation. Therefore, the CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of MMM P-UiO-66-liquid-50 increased by 396.5% and 81.3%, respectively, compared with that of pure Pebax membrane, showing attracting prospect in membrane separation. Moreover, the generality of this PSM strategy was confirmed using other different types of canopy species. Remarkably, this PSM strategy could be applied to synthesize other types of advanced porous materials (APMs)-based (e.g., covalent organic frameworks (COFs)) PLs by utilizing the rich library of oligomer species, thus undoubtedly advancing the applications of porous liquids in gas storage and separation.

Mechanochemical synthesized amino-functionalized ultramicroporous ZIF based mixed-matrix membranes for CO2 separation

Ning Li,Chao Ma,Mao Ye,Xiangyu Guo,Zhihua Qiao,Chongli Zhong

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have arisen as an energy-saving and efficient candidate for CO 2 separation that can mitigate the greenhouse effect. However, challenges still remain in achieving good filler-polymer compatibility and high separation performance. Herein, a mechanochemistry method is proposed to synthesize an amine-functionalized ultramicroporous ZIF-62 (ZIF-UC-6) with good CO 2 affinity. Amino functional groups and open metal sites are introduced into ZIF-UC-6, which significantly improve its CO 2 adsorption capacity of ZIF-62. According to the ideal adsorption solution theory (IAST) calculation, the CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of ZIF-UC-6 is ∼80 and ∼140, respectively. Besides, when ZIF-UC-6 is incorporated into Pebax, hydrogen bonds can form between filler and polymer, which can increase the interfacial compatibility in the MMMs. The optimized membrane possesses a CO 2 permeability of ∼560 barrer, together with high CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 41.8 and 86.2, surpassing the corresponding upper bounds. Moreover, the prepared MMMs have good pressure resistance and long-term stability. This work demonstrates an effective route for developing MMMs with good interfacial compatibility and high CO 2 separation performance for potential industrial applications.

Porous Graphene Oxide/Porous Organic Polymer Hybrid Nanosheets Functionalized Mixed Matrix Membrane for Efficient CO2 Capture

Rongrong He,Shenzhen Cong,Jing Wang,Jindun Liu,Yatao Zhang

The computational simulation of porous graphene oxide (PGO) indicated that it has great potential for the preparation of gas separation membranes. However, scaling up the manufacture of multilayer, defect-free porous graphene oxide membrane with consistently sized nanopores is extremely challenging. Here, we prepared layer-by-layer CO2-philic Pebax@1657 membranes that were functionalized by o-hydroxyazo-hierarchical porous organic polymers (o-POPs) and PGO. The d-spacing of pristine PGO could be finely regulated through CO2-philic o-POPs to facilitate the permeability of CO2. In addition, the o-POPs exhibit “N2-phobic, CO2-philic” properties with the phenolic hydroxyl and the azo group. The best of the POP-PGO membrane exhibits that the CO2 permeability and ideal selectivity of CO2/N2 are 232.7 Barrer and 80.7, respectively, and it has surpassed the Robeson’s upper bound (2008).
