Developing pressure sensors that combine high sensitivity, a wide response range, and a stable signal output is a great challenge. Due to the insufficiently robust structure of the sensor's skeleton, the sensor's skeleton will not only cause irreversible damage under repetitive pressure but will also produce uncontrollable deformation in the contact area between the skeletons, thus affecting the sensor's detection range, sensitivity, and the stability of the signal output. In this study, carboxymethyl cellulose/sodium alginate/MXene/carbon nanotube (CMC/SA/MXene/CNT) aerogels are prepared by directional freezing–freeze drying. The aerogel has a three-dimensional isotropic porous structure with two-dimensional faces as the supporting skeleton in the X, Y, and Z dimensions. Moreover, conductive CNTs and MXene are embedded in the skeleton to form a leaf-vein structure, which enhances the strength and toughness of the skeleton. The aerogel has a light weight, high conductivity, excellent mechanical properties (compressive strength of up to 148.78 kPa at 80% strain), and exceptional compression resilience. Assembling it into a piezoresistive sensor, it is characterized by its high sensitivity (GF = 7.6, S = 894.8 kPa−1), excellent fatigue resistance (retaining stability after at least 10 000 uninterrupted cycles), and rapid response time (0.16 s). The sensor is used for real-time monitoring of human movement and physiological activities and as a signal transmission device, indicating its broad application prospects in the field of flexible smart wearables and signal transmission devices.

Energy-efficient pervaporation (PV) membrane technology has shown significant potential for challenging liquid-liquid separations such as ethanol dehydration. However, its performance is highly temperature-dependent, and conventional bulk heating of the feed is energy-intensive and can damage membranes. To address this challenge, this study introduces an innovative strategy that synergistically combines photothermal and Joule heating within a novel PV device enabling precise and localized heating at the membrane interface. A tailored composite membrane was fabricated on polyacrylonitrile modified basalt fiber fabrics substrate, integrating carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and sodium alginate as a photothermal separation layer. The device employs a stainless-steel mesh as both a sealing gasket and a Joule heating layer, allowing targeted thermal regulation. The impacts of MWCNTs dose, applied voltage, and feed composition on ethanol dehydration performance, energy cost, as well as long-term stability, were experimentally evaluated. At 2.9 V and 1 sun, the optimal PV membrane (2 wt% MWCNTs) demonstrated a separation factor of 1313.64 and a flux of 1124.67 g m −2 h −1 for ethanol dehydration (90 wt%). The total energy consumption was reduced by over 80% compared with the traditional bulk heating process when including the energy consumption of the solar simulator and electricity. The PV membrane also maintained excellent performance during a 120-h stability test. The mechanism, cost and performance of the novel PV device were also revealed for academic and industrial interests. This work provides a novel, efficient, and sustainable pathway for advancing PV membrane separation technology.

This study aims to address the challenge of treating Pb 2+ in mining wastewater, a persistent issue in water environment pollution control. The sodium alginate/graphene oxide/polyethylene glycol (SA/GO/PEG) gel beads were designed and prepared with graphene oxide (GO), sodium alginate (SA), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as raw materials by combining experiments and simulation. Firstly, the simulation system of SA/GO/PEG gel bead was constructed through molecular simulation, and the optimal composition of SA/GO/PEG gel bead was determined. The simulation results indicated that, with a PEG polymerization degree of 4000, the SA/GO/PEG gel bead system exhibited the greatest structural stability and the most effective cross-linked. Based on the understanding of the structure–performance relationship, SA/GO/PEG4000 gel beads were prepared to achieve an adsorbent with both high adsorption capacity and good stability. Characterization results indicated the successful cross-linked of polyethylene glycol with sodium alginate and graphene oxide, which not only introduced additional oxygen-containing functional groups and increased the crystallinity of the gel beads but, more importantly, led to the formation of a dense and complex three-dimensional network. This structure contributed to the improved thermal stability of the composite. Adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption of Pb 2+ onto SA/GO/PEG gel beads followed the Langmuir isotherm model. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities at 25°C, 35°C, and 45°C were 490.20, 497.51, and 526.32 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, the gel beads exhibited excellent reusability, retaining 92.64% of their initial adsorption capacity after four consecutive adsorption–desorption cycles.

A bioinspired honeycomb composite aerogel was fabricated by freeze-drying. • AgNWs-based conductive networks enabled stable piezoresistive sensing behavior. • PDMS impregnation improved mechanical stability and environmental resistance. • The composite elastomer exhibited antibacterial activity (∼95%). • Wearable sensors demonstrated high sensitivity, fast response and stable cycling. Wearable piezoresistive sensors show great potential for motion analysis, health monitoring, and human–computer interaction. However, conventional sensing materials often suffer from limited sensitivity, insufficient flexibility, poor environmental adaptability, and inadequate antibacterial performance for skin-contact applications. Herein, a bioinspired anisotropic AgNWs/MFC/SA composite aerogel (30 A-55MS) was fabricated by directional freeze-drying, using silver nanowires (AgNWs) as the conductive and antibacterial network, microfibrillated cellulose/sodium alginate (MFC/SA) as the biomass-derived polymer scaffold, and CaCl 2 as the ionic-gelation agent. The directional porous architecture was inspired by the transport-channel structure of taro stalks. Subsequently, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was introduced by vacuum-assisted impregnation to obtain the 30 A-55MS/PDMS composite aerogel elastomer. PDMS encapsulation enhanced the mechanical stability and environmental resistance of the elastomer, which also exhibited bacterial reduction efficiencies of 95.57% against E. coli and 95.21% against S. aureus . The wearable piezoresistive sensor assembled from the 30 A-55MS/PDMS elastomer exhibited a high gauge factor (GF = −20.792 in the 0–2% strain range), rapid response/recovery times of 65/40 ms, and stable cycling performance over 1000 compression cycles. Moreover, real-time finger, neck, elbow, wrist, and knee movements were successfully monitored. This work provides a promising strategy for developing multifunctional aerogel-based wearable sensors for health monitoring, motion analysis, and human–computer interaction.

Fabric-based electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers have attracted widespread attention due to their favorable flexibility. However, most fabric-based EMW absorbers are manufactured via surface coating on conventional fabric substrates, which not only confines the EMW-absorbing behaviors to the fabric exterior but also poses potential environmental hazards with the involvement of organic solvents during production. In this work, a green strategy is proposed for producing intrinsic EMW-absorbing fibers through an aqueous process, with the senary high-entropy layered double hydroxide integrating graphene oxide (GO@SHE-LDH) as a functional constituent and the sodium alginate (SA)-waterborne polyurethane (WPU) dual-network system as a fiber matrix. The GO@SHE-LDH/SA-WPU (GLSW) fibers are woven into plain-weave fabrics, exhibiting a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −69.6 dB and a maximum effective bandwidth (EABmax) of 7.1 GHz below 2.2 mm thickness, with favorable terahertz shielding/absorption performance (49.8 dB/45.6 dB) covering the 0.5–4.5 THz band, which is attributed to the synergistic EMW-absorbing effect of multiscale mechanisms. This work provides a promising eco-friendly method to produce functional fibers toward EMW absorption.

The growing demand for sustainable packaging has accentuated the urgent need for high-performance, environmentally friendly coatings. In this study, we proposed a low-cost and industrially applicable one-step dip-coating strategy that integrates poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) with stearic acid (SA) to construct multifunctional coatings on bamboo fiber paper. PVB established hydrogen bonding with cellulose, forming a dense and continuous film that acted as a robust physical barrier and adhesive matrix. Concurrently, SA molecules interacted with PVB or cellulose through their carboxyl groups, whereas their long alkyl chains self-assembled during curing to generate hierarchical micro/nanostructures, thereby markedly reducing the surface energy. The synergistic interplay between PVB and SA produced a dual-repellent interface, in which PVB ensured film compactness and adhesion, whereas SA imparted pronounced hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics. As a result, the modified bamboo fiber paper exhibited a high water contact angle of 136.41 ± 1.98°, an oil resistance grade of 12, and a tensile strength of 25.30 MPa─representing a 3.26-fold improvement over the unmodified substrate (7.76 MPa). This strategy demonstrated a facile, economical, and scalable route for producing multifunctional, eco-friendly paper coatings with substantial potential for sustainable food and medical packaging applications.

Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) bead crosslinked with boric acid has been widely utilized as a microorganism immobilization carrier. However, it has some disadvantages such as drastic cell viability loss, small adsorption capacity and mass transfer limitation. To improve upon these drawbacks, a new method to prepare PVA composite pieces with the addition of activated carbon (AC) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate(PHB) was explored through a combination of freezing/thawing and the boric acid method and by using Tween-80 to improve the mass transfer performance of hydrophobic organics. m -Cresol and pyrene were used as representative compounds with benzene ring structures to model hydrophilic and hydrophobic organics in order to test the performance of PVA pieces. The results showed that, compared with the boric acid method alone, a combination of freezing/thawing and the boric acid method led to a decrease in total organic carbon(TOC) loss from 0.315 g g −1 to 0.033 g g −1 and increased the oxygen uptake rate(OUR) of microorganisms from 0.03 mg L −1 ·min −1 to 0.22 mg L −1 min −1 . The m -cresol equilibrium adsorption amount of the PVA-SA(sodium alginate)-PHB-AC piece was 2.80 times that of the PVA-SA piece. The diffusion coefficient of pyrene in the PVA-SA-PHB-AC piece increased from 0.53×10 −9 m 2 min −1 to 2.30×10 −9 m 2 min −1 with increasing concentrations of Tween-80 from 1000 mg L −1 to 5000 mg L −1 . The PVA-SA-PHB-AC composite carrier demonstrated great scope for immobilizing microorganisms for practical wastewater bio-treatment. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. An active and stable catalytic composite membrane (CCM), poly(vinyl alcohol)–poly(styrene sulfonic acid)/sodium alginate–poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA-PSSA/SA-PVA), was prepared to enhance the esterification of ethanol and propionic acid. The morphologies and crystal structures of the CCMs were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The effects of catalytic layer thickness, mass ratio of PVA to PSSA, concentration of catalytic layer solution, ratio of reaction volume to membrane area, and molar ratio of propionic acid to ethanol were discussed. The pervaporation results showed that the flux of CCM increased from 118 to 320 g m −2 h −1 compared with the SA-PVA membrane because of the close affinity and low resistance of PSSA to water. After crosslinking with 3-aminopropylmethyldiethoxysilane, the CCMs had good catalytic activities. The acid conversion reached 92.8% at 75 °C in 12 h, and the stabilization of the CCM was greatly improved. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135 , 46514.

Membrane separation technologies have great promising potential for applications in several industries. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), for their large surface areas, low framework densities, transition-metal ions in the skeleton and high pore volumes relative to other porous matrices, have great potential for the removal of sulfur from gasoline with high efficiency. In the present study, a novel porous membrane adsorbent MIL-101(Cr)/SA was prepared by immobilizing MIL-101(Cr) onto sodium alginate (SA) matrix, which can combine the size/shape selectivity of MIL-101(Cr) with the processability and mechanical stability of SA polymer. The physico-chemical properties of MIL-101(Cr)/SA were investigated by FT-IR, SEM, BET, XRD and EDX methods. To investigate the effects of some important factors on the adsorption behavior for thiophene, a batch of experiments were performed by changing the concentration of porogen polyethylene glycol in the MIL-101(Cr)/SA, solution temperature, initial thiophene concentration and contact time. Meanwhile, benzothiophene, thiophene and 3-methyl thiophene were used to test the selectivity of MIL-101(Cr)/SA. The MIL-101(Cr)/SA showed an excellent uptake capacity of 671 mg g−1 under the optimal adsorption conditions. Selectivity testing indicated that the uptake capacity of MIL-101(Cr)/SA follows the order of benzothiophene > thiophene > 3-methyl thiophene. Kinetics experiments indicated the pseudo-second-order model displayed good correlation with adsorption kinetics data. The Crank model showed that the intraparticle solute diffusion is the rate-controlling adsorption step. Regeneration experiment result shows that the prepared MIL-101(Cr)/SA has excellent adsorption and desorption efficiencies.

In this study, a stable gel sphere was successfully prepared by crosslinking sodium alginate(SA) with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) through La and modified by MMT for removing tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The obtained materials have been comprehensively characterized using SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS. The results of batch experiments showed that La@SA/CMC-MMT-0.5 had a high adsorption capacity of TCH, and its maximum adsorption capacity was up to 420.95 mg/g. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. The removal of TCH was a combined process involving both chemisorption and physical adsorption. Hydrogen-bond and complexation played a primary role in removing process, while the role of static electricity was more limited. The MMT modification not only enhanced adsorption capacity of TCH but also improved the thermal stability of the material by creating a temperature barrier and promoting hydrogen-bond. La substitution of metal ions in MMT and electrostatic attraction by MMT-surface negative charges contributed to reducing La-release. In application experiments, the La@SA/CMC-MMT-0.5 showed a high adsorption capacity, strong anti-disturbance performance, and good reusability. Therefore, La@SA/CMC-MMT-0.5 holds great potential for the effective adsorption of TCH in aqueous environments.

Nanofiber membranes have recently been considered as promising supports for the immobilization of microorganisms due to the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of electrostatic spinning technology and the ability to control fiber morphology, such as obtaining higher surface area and porosity. In this study, electrospun polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate/attapulgite (PVA/SA/ATP) nanofiber membrane was prepared as support for immobilized Bacillus cereus LY-1 for diesel degradation in an aqueous medium and a significant improvement in diesel removal efficiency was realized. The effect of modified ATP concentration on diesel removal was investigated. The results showed that the nanofiber membranes complexed with cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 1% ATP (w/w) had the best capacity for diesel removing. When the initial diesel concentration was 2 g L−1, about 87.8% of diesel was removed by the immobilized LY-1 cells after 72 h. Immobilization of bacteria improves the ability of bacteria to survive in adverse environments. Immobilized LY-1 cells maintain the nature to remove diesel at high salinity or pH range of 6–9. Furthermore, the reusability of the LY-1 cells-immobilized PVA/SA/CTAB–ATP nanofiber membrane was tested. A diesel removal rate of 64.9% could be achieved after 4 times of use. PVA/SA/CTAB–ATP nanofibrous membranes with immobilized LY-1 cells are feasible, economical and environmentally friendly for remediation of diesel contamination in the aqueous medium, and have potential applications in the future.

Plants face an array of insect herbivores and have evolved complex defense approaches against various insect feeding strategies. However, little is known about how plants respond to successive attacks by herbivores with different feeding modes and coordinate their diverse defense mechanisms. In this study, we unveil that inducible jasmonic acid (JA) accumulation in response to leaf-chewing insects augments plant resistance and repellence to sequential leaf-chewing insect (caterpillar) and phloem-feeding insect (whitefly) infestations. Conversely, constitutive and whitefly inducible salicylic acid (SA) accumulation exclusively bolsters defense against later-stage whitefly invasion. Through assessments of herbivore performance and preferences on wild-type, JA-deficient, and SA-deficient plants, we show that JA/SA levels regulate plant resistance to both initial and sequential herbivores. Notably, JA or SA accumulation due to caterpillar or whitefly attacks does not substantially affect constitutive levels of the other compound, despite their antagonistic crosstalk. Furthermore, exogenous JA application in tobacco elicits efficient defense against successive caterpillar and whitefly assaults, surpassing SA's efficacy, albeit with associated growth penalties. Our discoveries demonstrate that plants can tailor their defense strategies against initial and sequential insects with different feeding modes. This customized defense is facilitated by JA/SA responses and their intricate cross-talk while taking account of the growth-defense trade-off.
