Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has been extensively used in many industrial fields because of its excellent mechanical, electrically insulating and chemical/oil-resistant properties. However, it is inherently flammable and produces a huge amount of heat and smoke upon ignition, significantly impeding its industrial applications. Current fire-retardant strategies often result in significantly reduced flammability , but limited contribution to smoke suppression, and even reduced mechanical properties due to different governing mechanisms. To overcome this hurdle, herein, we reported a titanium carbide-derived nanohybrid (Ti 3 C 2 T x -D-H) via simple hydrogen-bonding assembly. Our results show that the peak of heat release rate and total smoke release yield of TPU nanocomposite containing 2.0 wt% Ti 3 C 2 T x -D-H are decreased by 27.3% and 43.8%, respectively, compared to those of pure TPU. Besides, the resultant TPU nanocomposite shows 32.8% and 56.8% increases in tensile strength and toughness, respectively. The distinguished fire-resistance and mechanical performances are ascribed to the tortuous effect, catalyzed charring and free radicals quenching function of Ti 3 C 2 T x -D-H nanohybrid together with a favorable TPU-Ti 3 C 2 T x -D-H interface. This work offers a promising strategy for simultaneously enhancing the fire resistance, smoke suppression and mechanical robustness of TPU, which is expected to find more industrial applications.

The solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy density and enhanced safety offer significant advantages for the storage of renewable energy. However, the uneven lithium deposition and rapid dendrite formation severely hinder their stable cycling and cause low energy efficiency. Particularly, the poor interfacial contact and short circuits are more likely to occur in high-energy solid-state LMBs, because the used immobile electrolytes that lacks flexibility and adaptability could easily trigger uneven lithium deposition. Herein, we coordinate the external magnetic field within the battery to enhance Li + transfer, fulfilling the modulation of Li + migration direction and uniform distribution of Li + at the battery interface under the guidance of Lorentz forces. With the implementation of enhanced mass transfer by magnetic field, the battery lifespan is extended by 86% compared to the original one. Both experimental and theoretical results verify that the improved stripping/deposition behavior of Li + significantly contributes to the interface stability that is critical for fast charging. Our work sheds light on taming the fundamental electrochemical behavior for long-cycling and high-safety LMBs.

Although topical application of minoxidil is a widely used, FDA-approved therapy for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) treatment, it suffers from low bioavailability, the requirement for frequent long-term use, and side effects. With a similar structure as minoxidil, kopexil and kopyrrol are less toxic and have been commercialized, but show an inferior hair regeneration effect compared to minoxidil. Herein, we developed a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based dissolvable microneedles (MNs) delivery platform integrated with kopexil and kopyrrol coencapsulated nanoliposomes (KK-NLPs) to effectively and safely treat AGA. Facilitated by nanoliposomes and MNs, the encapsulated KK-NLPs performed efficient skin penetration and enhanced cellular internalization into human dermal papilla cells. Furthermore, within the target cells, the codelivered kopexil and kopyrrol show synergistic effects by orchestrating an upregulation in the expression of Ki67, β-catenin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and CD31. These molecular responses collectively foster cell proliferation, migration, and antioxidative effects, thereby facilitating the expedited progression of hair follicles (HFs) into the anagen phase and promoting peripheral angiogenesis. Notably, the KK-NLPs-integrated MNs treatment group exhibits noteworthy enhanced hair regeneration in vivo, with identical or superior therapeutic effects at a much lower dosage than that of minoxidil. These results suggest the great potential of this kopexil and kopyrrol codelivery nanoliposomes-integrated MNs platform for AGA treatment in a safe and efficient way.

Polycarbonate is a widely used engineering plastic material, but its limited flame retardancy has restricted its application in high-end fields such as aviation and railways. In this study, we propose a novel copolymerization/macromolecular blending strategy to produce a high-performance, fire-safe polycarbonate composite. By copolymerizing with polydimethylsiloxane oligomer and blending with macromolecular polyarylate, the resulting PC-BPDMS 5 /PITR successfully achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating and a high limiting oxygen index value of 34.2%. The peak heat release and total smoke release were significantly reduced by 45.2% and 27.4%, respectively, compared to pure PC. SEM, Raman, and XPS analyses confirmed the condensed-phase dominated flame-retardant mechanism, attributed to the char-forming ability of the polyarylate and polydimethylsiloxane segments. Polydimethylsiloxane segments can decompose to produce small molecules such as methane, and the left structure with silicon, which undergo cross-linking reactions with the substrate during combustion to promote char formation. The polyaromatic ring structure of PITR can also participate in the formation of a dense and stable char layer. The excellent compatibility between the polyarylate and the PC matrix, combined with the superior flexibility of polydimethylsiloxane, allowed the composite to maintain mechanical properties comparable to pure PC. Additionally, the increased molar volume resulted in a low dielectric constant for PC-BPDMS 5 /PITR. This work presents a promising approach for the development of high-performance polycarbonate composites.

Compared to liquid electrolytes, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) offer enhanced safety and represent an up-and-coming option for high-energy–density lithium metal batteries (LMBs). However, several challenges hindered the practical application of GPEs for LMBs, such as low ionic conductivity at room temperature, decomposition at high voltage, and poor interfacial compatibility with lithium anode. In this study, a non-flammable fluorinated GPE was synthesized using 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl acrylate (TFEA) and ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate (ETPTA) as precursor materials, with succinonitrile (SN) incorporated as a plasticizer and a dual-salt system of lithium bis(trifluoro-methane) sulfonimide and lithium difluoroxalate borate. Notably, the as-prepared GPE exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 1.33 mS cm −1 at 30 °C, an electrochemical stability window of 5.15 V ( vs . Li + /Li), and excellent interfacial compatibility with the high-nickel LiNi 0.93 Co 0.035 Mn 0.035 O 2 (NCM-93) cathode and lithium metal anode. Consequently, the Li|NCM-93 cells demonstrated outstanding cycling stability at a cutoff voltage of 4.3 V at room temperature as well as exceptional safety performances under high-temperature conditions and intense radiation conditions. Furthermore, the fluorinated GPE effectively suppresses the gas generation from high-nickel cathode materials and inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites on the anode. This work offers a novel avenue for developing safe and high-voltage solid-state LMBs for working in harsh environments.

The separators play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of lithium batteries and greatly affect the electrochemical performance of the battery. However, the weak thermal stability and non-polar surface of commercial polyolefin separators severely restrict the development of the high-performance lithium batteries. In this work, we initially proposed polyamide acid (PAA) nanofiber separator with three monomers through a two-step synthesis method, which was prepared by electrospinning. By controlling different processing temperatures, PAA separators containing different amount of carboxyl groups were obtained. PAA separator had better wettability and thermal stability than PE separator. Meanwhile, the electrospinning method brings ultra-high porosity (95.3 %) to the membrane, resulting a much higher electrolyte absorption and retention rate of PAA (initially 3214 %, 240 % at 50 min) compared to PE separator. In particular, carboxyl groups serve as functional groups to provide an electronegative atmosphere, promoting the transport of lithium ion between the anode and cathode, and playing an important role in improving ionic conductivity. Consequently, batteries with PAA-SOH-50 separator showed the best rate charging/discharging performance, maintaining 87.7 % and 73.6 % of its initial capacity at 2.0 C. Moreover, cells with PAA separator exhibited much higher initial discharge capacity (164.3 mAh g −1 ) than that with PE separator (126.8 mAh g −1 ). After 100 cycles at 0.5 C, the PAA nanofiber separator achieved an ultralow attenuation rate of only 0.04 % per cycle, which was less than half of the commercial PE separator (0.10 % per cycle). This work provides a new vision for the development of separator materials, revealing the great influence of functional groups, such as carboxyl groups, on the performance of separators, which provides a strong basis for the further research of high-performance separators.

Epoxy-based vitrimers appear as a promising alternative to common epoxy materials. Nevertheless, the possibility of epoxy vitrimers in practical applications is limited by their high flammability. In this study, a novel bio-based casein phosphopeptide chelating zinc (CPP-Zn) is purposely developed, specifically designed to serve as a flame retardant and smoke suppressant for epoxy vitrimer, operating through a condensed phase mechanism. To further enhance the fire safety of epoxy resins, DOPO derivative (DDP) is synthesized through grafting with bio-based itaconate and subsequently used as a synergistic flame retardant in combination with CPP-Zn. DDP exhibits gas phase flame retardant mechanism through the release of free radical scavangers generated during combustion. As a result of the combination of condensed and gas phase effect, the composite achieves self-extinguishing within 1 second, attains a V-0 rating in UL-94 testing, and boasts an LOI of 32.3 %. Additional, it shows a remarkable 73.7 % reduction in heat release rate (HRR) and 27.2 % in total smoke production (TSP) compared with neat epoxy vitrimer. The experimental results also evidence that the characteristic features of vitrimers, self-healing and recyclability, have been retained in the prepared flame-retarded composites. The remolded 50D/EST-25Cz is still able to maintain 72.2 % of its tensile strength . This opens promising avenues for the development of highly fire-safe and eco-friendly epoxy resins.

Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) aerogels are promising sustainable porous materials, but their mechanically weak sheet-like networks and intrinsic flammability limit practical deployment under demanding conditions. Herein, we report a minimal-polymer interfacial densification strategy that uses only approximately 2 wt% aramid nanofibers (ANFs) to reinforce and fire-protect CNF aerogels. Through an in situ sol–gel–coating process, the ANF sol is converted into a compact interfacial coating on CNF sheets, yielding a hierarchical ANF–CNF–ANF sandwich skeleton that stabilizes weak inter-sheet junctions while preserving the ultralight porous structure. This optimized skeleton endows the aerogel with a compressive strength of 219 kPa and a modulus of 618 kPa, corresponding to 2.6- and 15-fold improvements over pristine CNF aerogel, respectively, while maintaining a low thermal conductivity of 37.1 mW m −1 K −1 . The ANF-modified aerogel also exhibits self-extinguishing behavior, an increased limiting oxygen index, and reduced heat and smoke release, demonstrating improved fire resistance. This study provides a facile minimal-polymer interfacial engineering route for developing mechanically robust, fire-safe, and thermally insulating bio-based aerogels.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are regarded as a representative next-generation energy storage technology due to their high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, their widespread application is hindered by challenges such as the insulating nature of sulfur and Li2S, the larger volume expansion during cycling, and the serious side effects caused by the soluble lithium polysulfide (LiPSs), all of which collectively lead to severe capacity decay and poor cycling stability. Furthermore, the high flammability of sulfur is another critical safety concern, which has hindered its further application. To effectively address these limitations, this study designed and developed a flame-retardant sulfur cathode (CS@Al/APP) by encapsulating carbon–sulfur composites with aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3) and employing ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a binder to enhance electrode stability and flame retardancy. Experimental results demonstrate that Al(OH)3 and APP synergistically improve the flame resistance by releasing inert gases and forming a protective char layer. Additionally, they enhance sulfur redox kinetics by efficiently trapping LiPSs. As a result, the CS@Al/APP cathode exhibits exceptional electrochemical stability, maintaining a reversible capacity of 1025.04 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles at 0.1C and delivering a discharge capacity of 744.2 mAh g–1 after 500 cycles at 1C. This study provides a feasible technical pathway for achieving lithium–sulfur batteries with high safety and high energy density.

Abstract Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising next-generation energy storage systems. However, their practical application remains limited by safety concerns and poor compatibility with high-voltage cathodes, arising from interfacial instability, dendrite growth, and uneven ion transport at the electrode–electrolyte interface. Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) improve safety but still suffer from low Li+ transference numbers and insufficient interfacial stability. Herein, a synergistic polymer, ionic liquid, and inorganic composite electrolyte (FALET) is developed to regulate ion transport and interfacial chemistry. The polymer/ionic liquid matrix facilitates Li+ transport, while EMIMTFSI also participates in interfacial electrochemical processes during Li plating/stripping. TiO2 nanofibers further regulate TFSI– anions and promote lithium salt dissociation through Lewis acid interactions. The resulting cooperative regulation of ion transport and interfacial chemistry homogenizes Li+ flux, promotes the formation of a dense inorganic rich SEI, and suppresses dendrite growth. The FALET electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 6.52 × 10–4 S cm–1, a Li+ transference number of 0.31, and a stability window of 5.01 V. It enables stable Li||Li cycling over 2700 h and a Coulombic efficiency of 96% in Li||Cu cells. Full cells further demonstrate stable cycling, high-voltage compatibility, and enhanced safety with improved flame retardancy and thermal stability. This work provides an effective strategy for developing safe and high-voltage-compatible solid polymer electrolytes.

Repair of craniofacial bone defects remains highly challenging due to the region's complex anatomy close to vital brain marrow tissue. How to make a safe and efficient repair without disturbing surrounding tissues is critical, especially in external-stimulus-enhanced regeneration strategy. Magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MHT), due to its ability of uniform heat generation and good penetration, has gained increasing attention in bone repair. An asymmetric magnetic microspheres hybrid hydrogel was developed with magnetothermal responsiveness for targeted heating at the defect, preventing the risk of potential thermal injury to adjacent critical tissues. Guided by an external magnetic field, magnetic microspheres distributed in the upper side of the hydrogel achieved localized mild heating (40°C–42°C) under an alternating magnetic field (AMF), whereas the lower side remained within a physiologically safe temperature (< 38°C). In vitro and in vivo experiments showed that the asymmetric magnetic hydrogel under safe magnetothermal stimulation significantly enhanced the osteogenic differentiation and vascularization. Furthermore, transcriptomic analysis and histological staining suggested that this platform may convert external magnetothermal stimulation into intracellular signals by activating the PI3K-Akt pathway and upregulating key osteogenic and angiogenic markers. Overall, this asymmetric magnetothermal hydrogel offers a spatially controlled, safe, and effective strategy for bone regeneration.
