Thermochromic Cs2NaInCl6: Sb3+/Ln3+ (Ln = Er, Dy, Tb, Ho) phosphors for multifunctional applications

You Li,Sai Xu,Yuefeng Gao,Yongze Cao,Xizhen Zhang,Hongquan Yu,Yichao Wang,Tianshuo Liu,Baojiu Chen

The intrinsic challenge to thermally responsive photoluminescent materials is pertaining to the limited thermal stability and reproducibility. Most prevailing photoluminescent agents suffer from constraints imposed by their frail chemical structure , rendering them fail to work at elevated temperatures for a long time. This inherent limitation curtails their utility within domains in anti-counterfeiting and encoded information storage. Herein, a series of double perovskite Cs 2 NaInCl 6 : Sb 3+ /Ln 3+ (Ln = Er, Dy, Tb, Ho) phosphors were synthesized using the high-temperature hydrothermal method . Upon ultraviolet light illumination, the blue emission band of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and intrinsic emissions of Ln 3+ are observed. In light of the variations in thermal quenching levels of the two emission centers and the effect of temperature on the lifetime of Ln 3+ , multi-mode thermometers with superior sensitivity are established. Moreover, they also can be used in anti-counterfeiting and encoding information storage, relying on the significant temperature-dependent color variation, excellent thermal stability and repeatability. The unique thermochromic properties and satisfactory stability of Cs 2 NaInCl 6 : Sb 3+ /Ln 3+ (Ln = Er, Dy, Tb, Ho) phosphors bring forward a new concept of developing multi-mode thermometers and reliable information encryption systems with the application of thermochromic materials.

Multi-wavelength NIR-II luminescence in lanthanide-doped Rb3InCl6 nanocrystals via Sb3+ sensitization

Wen Zhang,Dengfeng Yang,Juan Liu,Xiaolong Zheng,Wei Zhang,Ping Huang,Huilan Sun,Bo Wang,Wei Zheng,Xueyuan Chen

All-inorganic lead-free metal halide (MH) nanocrystals (NCs) have shown great promise for various optoelectronic applications; however, achieving efficient luminescence in the near-infrared-II (NIR-II) region remains a persistent challenge. Herein, we developed a new class of NIR-II-emitting materials based on Sb 3+ /Ln 3+ (Ln = Nd, Yb, Er) co-doped 0D Rb 3 InCl 6 NCs. By leveraging the spin-orbit allowed 1 S 0 → 3 P 1 transition of Sb 3+ as a sensitizer, we achieve intense multi-wavelength NIR-II emission arising from the 4f → 4f transitions of Nd 3+ , Yb 3+ , and Er 3+ under single-wavelength near-ultraviolet excitation, with a notable quantum yield of 7.1% for Er 3+ emission. The resulting NCs also demonstrate excellent ambient stability, enabling their use as visible/NIR dual emitters for applications such as bioimaging and night vision. This work provides a versatile co-doping strategy involving s- and f-electron ions to realize efficient NIR-II luminescence in lead-free MH NCs.

Design of dual-mode optical thermometry using Sb3+/Mn2+ codoped Cs2NaLuCl6 double perovskite

Zehua Zhang,Lili Wang,Ruiliang Zuo,Zhenzhen Jiang,Guangyong Jin

Wide band emission has aroused widespread focus in various fields such as display, plant lighting, and solar cells due to its spectral continuity. Here, a series of Sb 3+ /Mn 2+ doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 double perovskites with wide blue and red emissions were synthesized through a precipitation method. Enhanced self-trapped exciton (STE) emission and red emission of Mn 2+ ion are achieved by doping Sb 3+ ion to construct energy transfer channels. The temperature dependent fluorescence spectra exhibit that the emission intensity at 418 K remains 66.4% of that at 298 K in Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : 1% Sb 3+ , 10% Mn 2+ microcrystal. Importantly, the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of STE and Mn 2+ ion emissions show obvious broadening as the temperature increases, which is attributed to the enhanced electron-phonon interaction. The optical temperature sensing method based on FWHM of STE and Mn 2+ emissions is designed, the corresponding maximum relative sensitivity ( S r ) values are 0.14% at 298 K and 0.61% at 448 K, respectively. Furthermore, due to the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between STE and Mn 2+ ion is highly temperature-dependent, the temperature sensing based on FIR technique is investigated. The maximum S r values reach 1.31% K −1  at 448 K under 317 nm excitation. The minimum temperature resolution ( δT ) is calculated as 0.26 K at 448 K. The dual-mode temperature measurement methods based on FWHM and FIR can achieve more accurate remote temperature measurement. These results indicate the microcrystal has potential application in the fields of optical temperature thermometry.

Efficient orange self-trapped exciton emission from Sb3+-doped (DMA)4InCl7 single crystals

Zhenbeina Deng,Yusheng Xu,Ruijing Yang,Dacheng Zhou,Qi Wang,Jianbei Qiu

Developing efficient lead-free organic-inorganic hybrid metal halides (OIHMHs) remains a significant challenge due to inherent structural limitations. This study reports the synthesis of Sb 3+ -doped zero-dimensional (DMA) 4 InCl 7 single crystals (>0.5 cm) via a solvent-antisolvent method, notably without the use of DMACl precursors. Sb 3+ doping induces local lattice distortion, reducing the bandgap from 3.59 eV to 3.28 eV and resulting in intense orange self-trapped exciton (STE) emission at 560 nm, with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 54.76 %. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Sb 3+ -induced impurity states enhance electron-phonon decoupling and facilitate radiative recombination. A concept-validation device fabricated by directly coupling the crystal to a UV-LED chip produces stable yellow emission (CIE: 0.38, 0.51), highlighting its potential for practical optoelectronic applications.

Efficient and tunable photoluminescence from Dy3+-doped Cs2NaLuCl6 double perovskites via Sb3+ sensitization

Guodong Zhang,Yue Lu,Yaning Zhao,Peipei Dang,Hao Suo,Zhijun Wang,Panlai Li

Incorporating rare-earth (RE 3+ ) ions into lead-free halide double perovskites represents a promising strategy for modulating their optical properties through energy transfer mechanisms. In this study, Dy 3+ ions were successfully incorporated into Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 :Sb 3+ double perovskites via a facile hydrothermal method. The synthesized crystals not only exhibit intense blue emission originating from self-trapped excitons (STEs) but also display effective Dy 3+ characteristic emissions, thereby broadening the emission spectrum from the visible to the near-infrared region. The energy transfer from STEs to Dy 3+ is confirmed and extends across various RE 3+ ions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra reveal insights into the excitation and emission processes, as well as thermal quenching mechanism. Additionally, the characteristic emissions of Dy 3+ demonstrate varied anti-thermal quenching behaviors, indicating the remarkable thermal stability of the synthesized crystals. The thermally coupled sub-levels of Dy 3+ ions are employed to develop optical thermometers with notable sensitivity. Finally, the light-emitting diodes fabricated by encapsulating the optimized samples onto commercial chips highlight the great potential of Dy 3+ -doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 :Sb 3+ materials for photoelectric applications.

Dual-Response Photoluminescence of Rare Earth-Based Halide Double Perovskite

Xianhe Gao,Tao Cui,Ruigang Liu,Jie Liu,Shigui Zhu,Hao Song,Yang Wei,Weiqiu Kang,Xiumei Chen,Ze Yuan,Hongbo Li,Xiaoji Xie

Sb3+-doped rare-earth halide double perovskites (REDPs) have emerged as a novel class of optical and optoelectronic materials for diverse applications because of the enhanced optical properties induced by Sb3+ doping. However, the responsive luminescence features of Sb3+-doped REDPs, especially dual and multi-responsive luminescence, are rarely discovered. Herein, we show that Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 with blue and yellow-green emission centers exhibits both the excitation wavelength and temperature-responsive luminescence. Specifically, the dual emission centers of Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 exhibit reverse responses to temperature, changing the emission color of Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 as the temperature increases from 77 to 440 K. Our studies show that the observed dual-response luminescence should be attributed to the Sb3+ doping-enhanced responsive luminescence of pristine Cs2NaScCl6. The dual-response luminescence enables facile luminescence tuning of Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 with the assistance of co-doping with Tb3+ and Mn2+ and gives Sb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 potential for applications including information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, light-emitting diodes, and temperature sensing.

Realizing efficient photoluminescence spectral modulation via Sb3+/Ln3+ co-doping in Cs2NaInCl6 double perovskites

Shuai Li,Chunrong Zhu,Jinjiang Wang,Zheling Zhang,Dongjie Wang,Yiwen Chen,Doudou Zhang,Jing Wang,Jian Zhang

The broad-band self-trapped exciton (STE) emission feature of lead-free halide double perovskites makes it challenging to realize emission with various wavelengths in a single material. Cs2NaInCl6:Sb3+ crystals with blue emission (440 nm) were synthesized by rationally introducing the Sb3+ ion into Cs2NaInCl6 with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) up to 99.35%. The Ln3+ (Tb3+ and Ho3+) ions were doped into Cs2NaInCl6:Sb3+ to achieve spectrally tunable emission from blue to green and pink emission owing to the energy transfer from the host STE to Ln3+ ions, with PLQY values of 90.68% and 61.87%, respectively. By carefully adjusting the doping level of Ln3+ ions, white light emission with a PLQY of 68.87% was achieved in the Tb3+ and Ho3+ co-doped Cs2NaInCl6:Sb3+ system. LED devices based on Sb3+/Ln3+ co-doped Cs2NaInCl6 with multicolor and white light emissions were fabricated based on these phosphors, which exhibit excellent spectral and environmental stability. The results show that double perovskite luminescence materials have potential for application in solid-state lighting and multi-color displays.

Enhancement of intrinsic luminescence by Sb3+ doped (C7H9N)2CdBr6 with lone pair 5s2 electrons

Wanxu Zhang,Juan Wang,Yongzhuo Zheng,Mei Liu,Wenqing Wei,Fengwan Guo

Metal halides have a wide range of applications in the field of photovoltaics due to their diverse crystal, electronic structures and tunable emission properties. In recent years, organic-inorganic metal halides have paid more attention due to their broad emission bands, high luminescence efficiencies, and excessive stability. However, their photoluminescence (PL) mechanisms still need to be further explored. In this work, we have chosen Cd as the metal center to synthesize the stable 2D organic-inorganic metal halide (C7H9N)2CdBr6 (C7H9N = 4-bromobenzylamine cation) and revealed its interesting luminescence properties through experimental studies and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations. The photoluminescence (PL) of (C7H9N)2CdBr arises from intrinsic self-trapped domain exciton (STE) emission. Upon the introduction of Sb3+ containing lone-pair 5s2 electrons, (C7H9N)2CdBr6 undergoes various changes, including bandgap reduction and structural lattice softening, and the self-trapped domain exciton emission (STEs) is progressively enhanced, with an increase in the photoluminescence quantum yield from 31.42% to 59.86%. In this work, the luminescence mechanism of Sb3+ doped (C7H9N)2CdBr6 with lone pair 5s2 electron is discussed in detail. An effective strategy is provided for the search of environmentally friendly stabilized OIMHs and further enhancement of luminescence performance by doping with lone-pair-containing cations.

Luminescence dynamics and thermal quenching of Sb3+, Mn2+ co-doped Cs2NaLuCl6 double-perovskite phosphors

Li Qing,Guo Kaixin,Liu Bowang,Zhang Xin,Cui Ruirui,Wang Xu,Deng Chaoyong

Lead-free halide double perovskites are attractive luminescent materials owing to their low toxicity and structural stability, but their white-light performance is often limited by weak long-wavelength emission and inefficient energy regulation. Herein, Sb 3+ single-doped and Sb 3+ , Mn 2+ co-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Sb 3+ introduces broadband blue emission associated with localized excited states, while Mn 2+ incorporation produces orange-red emission through the 4 T 1  →  6 A 1 transition. The coexistence of these two emission components enables tunable dual-emission and single-host white-light generation. Time-resolved PL analysis confirms the shortening of the Sb 3+ -related lifetime after Mn 2+ incorporation, and the energy-transfer efficiency reaches 31.25% for the optimized Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 : 0.005Sb 3+ , 0.05Mn 2+ sample. Temperature-dependent PL and Arrhenius analysis reveal improved thermal-quenching resistance, with the activation energy increasing from 0.13777 to 0.21293 eV. The optimized phosphor-based WLED exhibits neutral-white emission with CIE coordinates of (0.3287, 0.3565), a CCT of 5688 K, and a CRI of 72.4. These results provide insight into emission regulation and energy-transfer dynamics in Sb 3+ , Mn 2+ co-doped Cs 2 NaLuCl 6 phosphors for proof-of-concept white-light and optical anti-counterfeiting applications.

Excitation-dependent persistent luminescence in CsCdCl3: Mn2+, Sb3+ phosphors for multi-dimensional optical encryption

Qing Li,Bowang Liu,Kaixin Guo,Ruirui Cui,Xu Wang,Chaoyong Deng

Mn 2+ ,Sb 3+ co-doping enables excitation-dependent afterglow in CsCdCl 3 phosphors. • Mn 2+ ,Sb 3+ co-doping prolongs CsCdCl 3 afterglow compared with singly doped samples. • Multi-dimensional optical encoding based on excitation- and time-dependent afterglow enables dynamic anti-counterfeiting. Excitation-dependent persistent luminescence materials attract growing interest for optical encryption, as emission colour and decay behaviour enable multi-parameter information encoding. Achieving high brightness, stable afterglow over a wide temperature range, and controllable emission output within a single material system remains challenging. In this work, CsCdCl 3 : Mn 2+ , Sb 3+ phosphors are synthesized via a room-temperature solution method, which offers a simple and scalable route. The materials exhibit distinct afterglow responses under ultraviolet excitation at 254, 310, and 365 nm. Sb 3+ exhibit cyan emission originating from the 3 P 1 → 1 S 0 transition, while Mn 2+ gives rise to orange-red emission ( 4 T 1 ( 4 G) → 6 A 1 ( 6 S)), sensitized by energy transfer from Sb 3+ to Mn 2+ . The relative contributions of these emission centres vary with excitation wavelength. Excitation-dependent afterglow decay behaviour is therefore achieved. Thermoluminescence analysis reveals a quasi-continuous trap distribution. This distribution supports stable afterglow over a wide temperature range. It also determines the decay behaviour. Excitation-dependent trap filling causes variations in afterglow lifetime. Time-resolved luminescence output is achieved. These properties enable dynamic optical anti-counterfeiting. Information is encoded and decoded through excitation wavelength, emission colour, and afterglow duration. Multi-dimensional and time-dependent data display is realised. This work offers great potential for designing persistent luminescence materials for advanced optical encryption applications.

Sb3+/Tb3+/Sm3+ triply doped Cs2NaScCl6 double perovskite toward high-quality white-light emission

Longjie Zhang,Chonghui Qi,Huangyao Chen,Xiang Guo,Ruirui Cui

Lead-free double perovskites (LFDPs) have attracted substantial research interest owing to their unique photoluminescence characteristics, low toxicity, and structural versatility. However, achieving efficient single-lattice white-light emission remains a formidable challenge due to the intrinsic difficulty of spectral tuning and the trade-off between luminescence efficiency and color quality in single-host systems. To address this issue, we developed a triple-doped rare-earth double perovskite system Cs 2 NaScCl 6 : Sb 3+ , Tb 3+ , Sm 3+ . Through a competitive energy transfer design, we achieved fine control over energy migration from Sb 3+ to Tb 3+ and Sm 3+ , enabling precise spectral modulation simply by adjusting the dopant concentrations. Steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy clearly identified three energy transfer routes: Sb 3+ → Tb 3+ , Sb 3+ → Sm 3+ , and Tb 3+ → Sm 3+ , which collectively contribute to the tunable white-light emission. The optimized material exhibits outstanding thermal stability, retaining 88.1% of its initial emission intensity at 473 K. The Cs 2 NaScCl 6 : 1%Sb 3+ , 40%Tb 3+ , 8%Sm 3+ single crystal achieves a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 40.90%. When fabricated into WLED devices, this phosphor delivers a color rendering index (CRI) of 85.1, a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4278 K, and near-ideal CIE coordinates of (0.336, 0.306). Collectively, this work not only presents a high-performance single-host white-light emitter for solid-state lighting applications, but also offers a viable energy transfer design strategy for rare-earth-activated LFDPs, thereby advancing the development of eco-friendly perovskite materials for white-light-emitting devices.

Sb3+-Doping in Cesium Zinc Halides Single Crystals Enabling High-Efficiency Near-Infrared Emission

Binbin Su,Mingze Li,Enhai Song,Zhiguo Xia

Luminescent metal halide materials with flexible crystallography/electronic structures and tunable emission have demonstrated broad application prospects in the visible light region. However, designing near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting metal halides remains a challenge. Here, an enlightening prototype is proposed to explore the high-efficiency broadband NIR emission in metal halide systems by incorporating Sb 3+ into the Cs 2 ZnCl 4 matrix. Combined experimental analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal a modified self-trapped excitons model to elaborate the NIR emission. The high photoluminescence quantum yield of 69.9% peaking at 745 nm and large full width at half maximum of 175 nm, along with excellent air/thermal stability, show the unique advantages of lead-free metal halide Cs 2 ZnCl 4 :Sb 3+ as the NIR light source. The substitution of Cl − by Br − further enables the red-shift of emission peak from 745 to 823 nm. The NIR light-emitting diode device based on Cs 2 ZnCl 4 :Sb 3+ demonstrates potential as a non-visible light source in night vision. This study puts forward an effective strategy to design the novel eco-friendly and high-efficiency NIR emissive materials and provides guidance for expanding the application scope of luminescent metal halides.
