BT@C@SiO₂ double-layer core-shell structure for enhancing the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of P(VDF-HFP) composite films

Yang Bowen,Zhang Siqi,Guan Mengxiang,Liu Lei,Yan Ziyu,Liang Yongri,Peng Guirong,Zhou Zhe

Owing to the outstanding ferroelectric properties, PVDF and its copolymers have emerged as the most promising piezoelectric polymer materials to date. To enhance the dielectric constant of P(VDF-HFP) while reducing its dielectric loss, BT@C@SiO 2 with a double-layer shell structure was synthesized and blended with P(VDF-HFP) to fabricate a piezoelectric film. Under mild conditions, PDA was synthesized as the precursor of the conductive carbon inner shell, which was carried out in a weakly alkaline Tris buffer system at room temperature, only involving stirring, centrifugation, water washing, and low-temperature drying, without any drastic reaction procedures. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of BT increased the dielectric constant of the film, whereas the introduction of the C layer formed micro-capacitors within the matrix, further enhancing the dielectric constant. Simultaneously, the C layer with high defect density captured freely mobile carriers in the film, thereby reducing AC conductivity and dielectric loss, which improved the energy harvesting efficiency of the piezoelectric film. The dielectric constant of the BT@C@SiO 2 /P(VDF-HFP) film could reach up to 15.8 (100 Hz), while the dielectric loss and conductivity were as low as 0.042 and 3.77 × 10 –9  S/m (100 Hz), respectively. The BT@C@SiO 2 acted as a nucleating agent in the P(VDF-HFP) matrix, and consequently induced the increase of the crystallization temperature and the formation of β phase in P(VDF-HFP). When the BT@C@SiO 2 content reached 5%, under a pressure of 40 N and a loaded resistance of 10 6  Ω, the composite film achieved its highest piezoelectric output with the output voltage of 1.1 V. Under a pressure of 40 N and a loaded resistance of 10 11  Ω, the piezoelectric output power reached its maximum value of 8.76 μW. A 5% BT@C@SiO 2 /P(VDF-HFP) film was fabricated into a piezoelectric sensor for practical applications. The output voltages of the film during finger bending, finger tapping and foot stepping were 0.40 V, 0.75 V, and 2.65 V, respectively. These results indicated that BT@C@SiO 2 /P(VDF-HFP) piezoelectric film exhibited potential application in motion monitoring.

Radiative cooling performance of fluorinated polyimide composite films for electronic devices with broadband mid-infrared emission enhanced by BaHPO₄/SiO₂ particles

Yuhang Wang,Xiaoke Wei,Canying Zhang,Daxiong Wu,Haitao Zhu

Fluorinated PI film integrates with BaHPO 4 /SiO 2 particles to form a Janus structure. • The film achieves 96.94% solar reflectivity and 94.70% MIR emissivity (6-16 μm). • Outdoor test shows 13 and 22 °C lower than commercial coatings and standard paints. • The film is flexible, durable, self-cleaning, and flame-retardant. Radiative cooling offers a promising passive strategy for thermal management of electronic devices; however, achieving the combination of high solar reflectivity, broadband mid-infrared (MIR) emissivity, and robust mechanical performance remains challenging. In this work, a fluorinated polyimide (PI)-based composite film with enhanced radiative cooling capability is developed via electrospinning followed by vacuum-assisted filtration. By incorporating BaHPO₄ and SiO₂ particles into a fibrous PI matrix, a gradient-structured composite is formed, enabling synergistic spectral regulation. The best-performing film exhibits a high average solar reflectivity of 96.94% (0.25-2.5 μm) and a strong broadband MIR emissivity of 94.70% (6-16 μm), matching the thermal radiation characteristics of typical electronic devices. The fabrication strategy also improves interfacial bonding, resulting in a tensile strength of 17.15 MPa. Experimental evaluations using a simulated electronic device demonstrate significant cooling performance, with temperature reductions of 13 °C and 22 °C compared to commercial high-reflectivity coatings and conventional paints, respectively. Additional tests confirm excellent flexibility, wear resistance, flame retardancy, hydrophobicity, and weather stability. This study provides a scalable approach to engineering high-performance radiative cooling films for energy-efficient thermal management of electronic systems operating under both indoor and outdoor conditions.

Rapid, sensitive, and convenient magnetic surface-enhanced raman spectroscopy substrate based on Fe₃O₄/C/SiO₂-SH for aflatoxin B1 detection

Guo Hao,Zhang Baowen,Bai Ziwei,Miao Rusen,Zhang Kaiyue,Wang Meng,Tian Fei

A rapid, sensitive, and convenient surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate was developed using Fe₃O₄/C as the magnetic core and SiO₂-SH as the shell for the detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Ultra-small Fe₃O₄/C nanoparticles (NPs) with an average size of 6.30 ± 0.68 nm and excellent magnetic responsiveness were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal method, followed by the deposition of a uniform SiO₂ shell, followed by thiol-group functionalization to yield Fe₃O₄/C/SiO₂-SH. The magnetic core enables instantaneous separation of the substrate from solution after AFB1 adsorption, eliminating the need for centrifugation or filtration. When employed as a SERS substrate, significant enhancement of the characteristic Raman peak at 1482 cm⁻ 1 was observed across AFB1 concentrations of 0.1–10 μg/mL. Notably, the peak intensity at 10 μg/mL exceeded that of solid AFB1 powder. Comprehensive characterization (TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and vibrating sample magnetometry) confirmed the core–shell structure, high crystallinity, and strong magnetic properties. The prepared Fe₃O₄/C/SiO₂-SH nanocomposite offers a low-cost, easily recyclable, and noble-metal-free platform, demonstrating strong potential for trace AFB1 monitoring in herbal medicines and food products.

Enhancement of soft magnetic properties of FeSiBCuNb nanocrystalline soft magnetic composite by SiO₂/FexOy double insulation layers and nanophase structure control

Hui Min Hu,Yang Li,Zhong Li,Lina Wang,Zongzhen Li,Ruoxuan Li,Hongxia Li,Xianguo Liu,Fuqi Zhao,Xuefeng Zhang

Soft magnetic composites (SMCs) have attracted significant attention as key magnetic materials with the ongoing trend toward high-frequency operation in electronic devices. However, conventional approaches to tailoring the magnetic properties of SMCs rely excessively on coating processes, highlighting an urgent need to develop new control strategies. In this work, the influences of silicone resin content and annealing temperature on the microstructure and soft magnetic properties of FeSiBCuNb nanocrystalline soft magnetic composites (NSMCs) were systematically investigated. During annealing, the thermal decomposition of silicone resin generates a SiO 2 insulating layer. Concurrently, part of the oxygen released from the decomposition of both the silicone resin and zinc stearate reacts with Fe in the FeSiBCuNb powder to form a uniform Fe x O y insulating layer, while the remaining oxygen reacts with Si to generate SiO 2- y . The dual-layer SiO 2 /Fe x O y insulating structure effectively suppresses magnetic losses. Moreover, annealing induces the precipitation of the α-Fe(Si) phase from the amorphous matrix, and the volume fraction and size of the α-Fe(Si) phase increase with increasing the annealing temperature, whereas excessive grain coarsening leads to the deterioration of magnetic properties. The NSMC with a silicone resin content of 1.5 wt% annealed at 450 °C gets remarkable comprehensive magnetic properties with a high effective permeability ( μₑ ) of 37.76, excellent frequency stability up to 1 MHz, and a DC bias performance of 51.82 % at 100 Oe. This work provides valuable insights for the development and application of novel high-performance SMCs by optimizing the coating process and tailoring the nanocrystalline structure.

Mou Yongren,Kang Ming,Wang Feng,Liu Min,Chen Kexu,Sun Rong

Abstract Monodisperse core-shell structured SiO 2 @SiO 2 :Eu(DBM) 3 phen microspheres, as a new kind of fluorescent particles, were fabricated by a seeded growth method in the presence of surfactant CTAB (DBM = dibenzoylmethane, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, CTAB = cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide). In this way, a thin mesoporous silica shell doped with Eu(DBM) 3 phen was grown on the prepared monodisperse silica colloids. The structures of the as-prepared phosphors were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, thermal gravimetric analysis–differential scanning calorimetry, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques, and photoluminescence spectra. The experimental results show that the microshpere has a typical core-shell structure with a diameter of about 370 nm, consisting of the silica colloids core with about 340 nm in diameter and mesoporous silica shell doped with europium complexes with an average thickness of about 15 nm. The as-obtained core-shell microspheres exhibit a strong red emission peak originating from electric-dipole transition 5 D 0  →  7 F 2 (610 nm) of Eu 3+ ions under the excitation of 405 nm. Additionally, the photoluminescence intensity increases with the increasing of europium complexes concentration in mesoporous silica shell, and concentration quenching occurs when europium complexes concentration exceeds 7.0 mol%. The prepared microspheres may present potential applications in the fields of optoelectronic devices, bio-imaging, medical diagnosis, and the packing structural functional composites. Graphical Abstract Monodisperse core-shell structured SiO 2 @SiO 2 : Eu(DBM) 3 phen microspheres with high lumious performance were fabricated by a seeded growth method by means of surfactant CTAB.

High-electrophilic (SiO)2Nb(OH)(=O) sites confined in silanol defects over Nb-Beta zeolite for efficient cyclic alkene epoxidation reactions

Yan Chen,Guojun Lv,Xuyang Zou,Shihao Su,Jiangzhang Wang,Chaoyi Zhou,Jialing Shen,Yangbin Shen,Zhongmin Liu

Dealuminated Beta zeolite has a large amount of silanol defects on its interface, which provides an ideal place for embedding metal species and creating metal active sites in a confined microenvironment. The confined metal sites as well as their surroundings are closely related to the reactant activation and transient state achievement. Hence, unraveling the confined metal sites is of great significance for the catalytic reaction process. Herein, niobium species were incorporated into the silanol defects over dealuminated Beta zeolite with a facile dry impregnation method, co-grinding the niobium precursor with dealuminated Beta zeolite support. The successful incorporation of niobium into the silanol defects for 30Nb-Beta zeolite was verified by DRIFT, 1 H MAS NMR, UV–Vis and UV-Raman characterizations. XAS characterization and DFT calculations further disclosed that the confined Nb species existed as (SiO) 2 Nb(OH)(=O), containing two Si−O−Nb bonds, one Nb=O bond as well as one Nb−OH bond. The synthesized 30Nb-Beta zeolite catalyst displayed a superior cyclohexene conversion of 51.1%, cyclohexene oxide selectivity of 83.1% as well as TOF value of 188.2 h −1 ascribed to the inherent electrophilicity of Nb(V) for confined (SiO) 2 Nb(OH)(=O) species as well as the low oxygen transfer energy barrier for Nb V −OOH species. Furthermore, the prepared 30Nb-Beta zeolite can be effectively employed to other cyclic alkene epoxidation reactions.

Mechanical Characterization of Nano-SiO₂-Reinforced Epoxy Sandwich Composites With 3D Rayon Graphite Felt Core and Woven Carbon Fiber Face Sheets

Zahraa Jalood Nayyef,Nabil Kadhim Taieh,Ammar A. Beddai,Ying Li,Xi Liu,Adil Elrayah

New epoxy (EP)-based sandwich composites have enhanced mechanical performance and optimized cost-effectiveness, as a result of composites’ increasing popularity. This study aims to develop composites with 3, 5, and 7 layers of woven carbon fibers (WCFs) layered on 3D rayon-based graphite felt (3D RGF) as the core of the sandwich composites. Using WCFs as face sheet layers increases flexural strength and modulus. Flexural strength increases to 226.92 MPa, and modulus increases to 15.18 GPa with 3 WCFs layers. Five layers increase modulus to 25.43 GPa and flexural strength to 370.21 MPa. Seven layers provide the highest modulus of 31.38 GPa and flexural strength of 405.07 MPa. Diverse concentrations of nanosilica (0.01, 0.1, 0.5, and 0.8 wt%) were embedded within the core to bolster its mechanical properties. Using an in situ casting method, an EP resin solution was infused into the structure, forming a bicontinuous composite. This method significantly enhances the toughness and adhesion between the fibers and the EP resin, resulting in superior mechanical properties. EP alone has 57-MPa tensile strength, but three layers of WCFs increase it to 531.38 MPa, five layers increase it to 647.24 MPa, and seven layers increase it to 764.40 MPa. The minimum tensile modulus of EP is 2.75 ± 0.5 GPa. The modulus increases significantly when layers of WCFs are added, reaching 9.75 GPa with three layers, 14.96 GPa with five layers, and a maximum value of 23.44 GPa with seven layers. When a little amount of nanosilica was added, the flexural properties of composites were significantly affected. Among all concentrations, 0. 5 wt% nano-SiO 2 yielded the highest enhancement of flexural strength and modulus. At 0.1 wt% nanosilica, the flexural strength and modulus of the sandwich composites increase to 493.5 MPa and 30.5 GPa (23.4% and 24.5%). The peak occurs at 0.5 wt%, reaching 645.7 MPa and 41.5 GPa (61.4% and 69.4%). However, at 0.8 wt%, values drop to 560.1 MPa and 30.4 GPa, still showing 40.0% and 24.1% improvements. This study provides a new solution for reinforcing the mechanical properties of EP sandwich composites. Increasing the performance with nanofiller concentrations is also emphasized.

Preparation and property modulation of modified-SiO₂-KH570/styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene superhydrophobic coatings with stretching-induced micro-nano-structure optimization

Guangtong Zhang,Ce Liang,Wenxue Li,Baojun Lin,Hongyi Liu,Shuang Gao

To address the issue of superhydrophobic coatings on flexible/stretchable substrates failing under strain and friction conditions, this paper proposes a fluorine-free, stretchable composite method: First, γ-Methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (KH-570) modifies the surface of SiO₂ nanoparticles to enhance interfacial compatibility with the organic phase. This modified surface is then blended with the thermoplastic elastomer SEBS and sprayed onto a chloroprene rubber (CR) substrate. Stretching induces controlled micro/nano-scale roughness evolution. Results indicate that at SiO₂-KH570:SEBS of 1:1, the coating exhibits surface roughness Ra≈5.12 μm, an initial water contact angle (WCA) of 157.5 ± 1.5°, and a rolling angle (SA) of 7.4 ± 1.5°. At 100% tensile strain, the WCA further increased to approximately 161 ± 1.5° while maintaining low adhesion, and superhydrophobicity persisted even at 150% strain. After durability testing (tape stripping, sandpaper abrasion, water jet impact, sand impact), both 1:1 and 1:2 ratio samples retained high hydrophobicity overall. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (3.5   wt% NaCl) and 500   h neutral salt spray testing showed: the 1:1 sample exhibited optimal initial shielding performance, while the 1:2 sample demonstrated slightly superior long-term immersion durability. Mechanistically, KH-570 endows the interface with low surface energy, SEBS provides stress buffering and elastic rebound, and stretching creates hierarchical structures in surface wrinkles/pores. This stabilizes the Cassie-Baxter state and reduces the actual solid-liquid contact area. This work provides a concise, scalable route for durable superhydrophobic/anti-fouling self-cleaning surfaces on stretchable substrates.

Pre-lithiation strategy enhancing interfacial stability of carbon-coated SiO anodes via controlled formation of LixSiyOz for high-energy lithium-ion batteries

Hong Dong,Yanping Ma,Xiaobin Zhou,Jinying Hou,Juan Xin,Mingzhu Wei,Jianyao Zhu,Shiyou Li,Ya-Jun Cheng

A controllable pre-lithiation strategy is presented, elevating the ICE of carbon-coated SiO from 73.97% to 91.19% and a relatively high-capacity retention rate of 90.98% after 500 cycles at 1.2 A g −1 . • The work unveils the mechanism of interfacial stabilization through multi-scale diagnostics, demonstrating that optimized pre-lithiation fosters a uniform and robust SEI, thereby suppressing continuous electrolyte decomposition. • First-principles calculations confirm the enhanced pre-lithiation kinetics afforded by carbon coating, providing a theoretical foundation for the design of high-performance SiO-based anodes. Low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and limited cycling stability obstacle the practical application of silicon monoxide (SiO) as an anode material. To solve these problems, this study proposes to use the Li x Si y O z substance formed during the pre-lithiation process to make up for the coating defects on the surface of carbon-coated SiO to further enhance the interface stability. We studied the pre-lithiation reaction mechanism by adjusting the ratio of lithium to silicon (Li/Si) and combining X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) and in-situ high-temperature XRD. When the Li/Si ratio is optimized to 12.5%, the ICE of the pre-lithiated composite material significantly increases from 73.97% to 91.19% and a relatively high-capacity retention rate of 90.98% after 500 cycles at 1.2 A g −1 . More importantly, the assembled 2.0 Ah pouch cell has a long-term cycle life of over 700 cycles at 1.0C, with a capacity retention rate of 84.65%. Furthermore, in-situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) indicate that this pre-lithiation strategy promotes the formation of a more uniform and denser solid electrolyte interface (SEI), thereby suppressing ongoing electrolyte decomposition and reducing continuous electrolyte consumption. First-principles calculations further confirm that the carbon coating enhances the pre-lithiation kinetics of SiO. The controlled pre-lithiation process is schematically illustrated, showing the in-situ formation of an L ix Si y O z buffer layer on carbon-coated SiO, which compensates for coating defects, stabilizes the interface, and leads to significantly enhanced ICE and cycling stability. Highly Transparent Phase Change Smart Windows Enabled by Refractive-Index-Matched n-Octadecane@SiO2 Microcapsule Composites.

Yang F,Zhang Z,Feng Y,Qin M,Feng W.

The development of phase change materials (PCMs) for window applications with both high optical transparency and effective temperature regulation is crucial for passive energy saving. However, liquid leakage during phase transition and enhanced interfacial light scattering often cause fluctuations in optical transmittance and deterioration of image clarity. To address these challenges, a highly transparent phase change composite was constructed via a microencapsulation strategy. Submicron core-shell microcapsules were fabricated using n-octadecane as the core and silica as the shell, enabling effective encapsulation of the liquid PCM component. The resulting microcapsules exhibited a high melting enthalpy of 155.3 J g -1 . They were subsequently homogeneously dispersed within a refractive-index-matched polymer matrix, mitigating light scattering during phase transition by reducing interfacial refractive index mismatch. The composite exhibited favorable thermal energy storage capability and transmittance performance, with a visible light transmittance of 83.75% and a transmittance fluctuation of only ~5% before and after phase transition. After 100 thermal cycles, the optical attenuation remained as low as 0.35%, demonstrating excellent cycling stability. This work provides a new strategy for balancing optical transparency and phase change function, with potential applications in smart windows and flexible electronics.

A green PI-SiO₂ aqueous sizing coating for tailoring the interphase of quartz fiber/PEEK composites toward enhanced mechanical performance and electromagnetic transparency

Yujie Rong,Chuanmei Wang,Chaobo Liang,Jin Huang,Guizhe Zhao,Yaqing Liu,Shaofeng Zhou

Quartz fiber (QF)/polyether ether ketone (PEEK) composites are promising for high-temperature wave-transparent applications. However, their performance is severely limited by weak interfacial bonding and interfacial polarization. In this work, a green and thermally stable polyimide-silica (PI-SiO₂) aqueous sizing coating was developed to tailor the fiber/matrix interphase. The PI component enhances interfacial compatibility with the PEEK matrix through molecular chain entanglement, while silane-modified SiO₂ nanoparticles introduce reactive functional groups and nanoscale roughness, enabling interface anchoring and mechanical interlocking. As a result, a dense and gradient interphase with reduced defects is constructed. At an optimal composition (1 wt% PI and 1.5 wt% SiO₂), the interlaminar shear strength, flexural strength, and impact strength increased by 29.72%, 43.27%, and 67.60%, respectively, along with a 21.36% reduction in wear rate. The thermal decomposition temperature increases by 6.54%, accompanied by a 10.03% increase in char yield at 800 °C. More importantly, the dielectric constant is reduced to ∼3.0 with a dielectric loss below 0.02, resulting in enhanced electromagnetic wave transmission in the 2–18 GHz range. This improvement is attributed to the suppression of Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars polarization and defect-induced scattering due to the engineered interphase. This work demonstrates an environmentally friendly and scalable sizing coating strategy for simultaneously improving the mechanical, thermal, tribological, and electromagnetic properties of high-performance thermoplastic composites, providing new insights into interphase design for multifunctional coatings and advanced structural materials.

Developing of a jujube cake structured composite filler SiO₂@PHT-1 for preparing a pH-indicating film with high pH measurement precision and strong reusability

Yurou Chen,Yili Wei,Wenjun Song,Yiwen Zhang,Wenjie Tan,Jun Li,Shun Wang,Yadong Wu,Huile Jin

Phenolphthalein (PHT) is always applied as an acid-base indicator but suffers from too wide a range of characterization and uneven dispersion in thin films. To solve this problem, in this work, a composite filler SiO₂@PHT-1 with a jujube cake structure was designed. The size of phenolphthalein particles was effectively regulated by intervening in the growth process of phenolphthalein nuclei through silica (SiO₂). This also improved the dispersion of PHT in fluororubber (FKM) films, as well as the indicator film's tensile strength (57.1%) and initial decomposition temperature (201.6 °C), resulting in the pH indicator film with excellent tensile properties and thermal stability. The FKM/SiO₂@PHT-1 film is also capable of determining the pH value of a solution based on color and phenomena. In addition, the dense protective layer formed by the silica retards the release of PHT in the sample solution, which contributes to the reusability of the film. This method shows great promise and can be applied to laboratory and swimming pool alkalinity testing.
