Two-dimensional piezoelectric nanomaterials are promising candidates for the piezocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, challenges such as poor recyclability and the risk of secondary pollution must be addressed to enable large-scale applications. Herein, a novel hierarchical porous piezoelectric composite foam was synthesized by embedding microcrystalline SnSe nanoparticles partially onto the wall surfaces of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix. The excellent flexibility and hierarchical pore structure of the composite foam facilitated the capture of weak mechanical energy and provided abundant sites for catalysis. The bi-piezoelectric integration effect, featuring microcrystalline SnSe decoration and PVDF matrix rich in polar β‑phase induced by SnSe, significantly enhanced the piezocatalytic activity. Compared to pure PVDF, the 15 wt% SnSe/PVDF composite foam exhibited superior piezocatalytic activity for various organic pollutants. The degradation rate for Rhodamine B (RhB) dye was enhanced by 10 times, while that for ciprofloxacin (CIP) antibiotic was enhanced by 20 times. The stability and recyclability of composite foam were investigated, and the degradation application of RhB under simulated water flow-driven treatment conditions was visually monitored. The enhancement mechanism of the piezoelectric property of composite foam was clarified through measurements of the dielectric constant and piezoelectric coefficient, complemented by finite element modeling simulation. The degradation intermediates of CIP on 15 wt% SnSe/PVDF composite foam were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The degradation pathway for CIP was proposed based on a combination of density functional theory calculations and frontier orbit theory.

Exploring electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials with thin thickness, wide bandwidth, and strong attenuation characteristics to reduce electromagnetic pollution remains a critical challenge. This study constructs Fe–Co–SnSe/graphite nanosheet composites through solid-state reaction and ball milling processes, successfully anchoring magnetic nanoparticles onto graphite nanosheets. By rationally regulating the molar ratio of magnetic components, the FCS/G-1.5 composite delivers an RLmin of −46.53 dB, corresponding to an EAB of 3.68 GHz at a thickness of merely 1.3 mm. Furthermore, a significant reduction in the radar cross-section (RCS) value during far-field simulations further verifies the practical applicability of the FCS/G-x composites. The outstanding electromagnetic properties of the as-prepared composites are mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect between dielectric loss and magnetic loss. This includes the cooperative contribution of multiple loss mechanisms, such as interfacial polarization, conduction loss, eddy current loss, as well as natural resonance and exchange resonance. This study fills the gap in the progress of SnSe-based absorbing materials and provides a reliable pathway for designing the next generation of lightweight and efficient EMW absorbing devices.

As a potential thermoelectric (TE) candidate with a rock salt structure similar to PbTe, SnTe has attracted much attention in recent years. However, a high carrier concentration caused by its inherent Sn vacancy severely lowers the TE performance. In this study, it is found that the introduction of Br on the basis of Se doping not only manipulates the carrier concentration but also reduces the solubility of SnSe in SnTe to form SnSe nanoprecipitates with suitable sizes (<10 nm) to scatter phonons. Thereby, the power factor is improved (∼1943 μW m–1 K–2) and the thermal conductivity is reduced (∼2.13 W m–1 K–1), pushing the zT value up to ∼0.75 (Sn1.03Se0.12Te0.870Br0.010) at 823 K. This study combines the carrier and chemical solubility engineering by halogen doping and provides an approach to improve the TE performance of materials with similar structures.

As an environmentally friendly thermoelectric material, SnSe has attracted great attention because of its excellent performance in its single-crystal form. On the other hand, the better mechanical property and lower manufacturing cost of its polycrystalline counterpart with the better mechanical property and lower manufacturing cost can serve as a better candidate for widespread applications. Previous reports on p-type polycrystalline SnSe mainly focus on optimizing the carrier concentration by doping alkali metals or decreasing the lattice thermal conductivity by nanostructuring. Here, we report the effect of Yb doping on the thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline SnSe prepared by solvothermal synthesis . Through introducing Yb, the p-type carrier concentration is increased and the density of states at valence band maximum is distorted, which is revealed by DFT calculation, leading to an increase of the effective mass. Thus, the power factor has been markedly enhanced to 0.78 mW m −1 K −2 at 823 K (about 1.6 times that of undoped SnSe). Moreover, Yb doping in SnSe decreases the lattice thermal conductivity by intensifying the phonon scattering. As a result, a high zT of 1.1 at 823 K in Sn 0.98 Yb 0.02 Se is achieved along the in-plane direction. This work provides a new way for improving the thermoelectric properties of SnSe by modifying its valence band structure .

A broad spectral response is highly desirable for radiation detection in modern optoelectronics; however, it still remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a novel ultrabroadband photodetector based on a high-quality tin monoselenide (SnSe) thin film, which is even capable of detecting photons with energies far below its optical band gap. The wafer-size SnSe ultrathin films are epitaxially grown on sodium chloride via the 45° in-plane rotation by employing a sputtering method. The photodetector delivers sensitive detection to ultraviolet–visible–near infrared (UV–Vis–NIR) lights in the photoconductive mode and shows an anomalous response to long-wavelength infrared at room temperature. Under the mid-infrared light of 10.6 μm, the fabricated photodetector exhibits a large photoresponsivity of 0.16 A W–1 with a fast response rate, which is ∼3 orders of magnitude higher than other results. The thermally induced carriers from the photobolometric effect are responsible for the sub-bandgap response. This mechanism is confirmed by a temperature coefficient of resistance of −2.3 to 4.4% K–1 in the film, which is comparable to that of the commercial bolometric detectors. Additionally, the flexible device transferred onto polymer templates further displays high mechanical durability and stability over 200 bending cycles, indicating great potential toward developing wearable optoelectronic devices.

Single-crystal SnSe has been reported to exhibit ultralow thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance. For future large-scale thermoelectric applications, however, polycrystalline SnSe would offer more advantages. Unfortunately, its thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) is much poorer than that of single crystal. Improvements are challenging because the reduction in thermal conductivity is usually accompanied by a degradation in the power factor. Here we report how the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline SnSe can be reduced by Ag2S addition and nanostructuring while avoiding this downside. We investigated the thermoelectric properties of Ag2S-added SnSe polycrystals in the range from 300 to 773 K. We obtained a peak ZT of 0.88 in SnSe with 1% Ag2S addition (SS1), twice as high as pristine SnSe (SS). The thermal conductivity is depressed even further in a nanostructured SnSe + 0.01Ag2S sample (SS1-Nano). More importantly, at high temperature the power factor remains as high as that of the SS1 sample. Due to a minimum thermal conductivity of 0.30 W m−1 K−1, we obtained a maximum ZT of 1.13 in the SS1-Nano sample at 773 K.

Rapid glycolysis of tumor cells produces excessive lactate to trigger acidification of the tumor microenvironment (TME), leading to the formation of immunosuppressive TME and tumor-associated macrophage (TAM) dysfunction. Therefore, reprogramming TAMs by depleting lactate with nanodrugs is expected to serve as an effective means of tumor-targeted immunotherapy. Herein, we report the use of lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH)-mimicking SnSe nanosheets (SnSe NSs) loaded with a carbonic anhydrase IX (CAIX) inhibitor to reconstruct an acidic and immunosuppressive TME. As expected, this nanosystem could reprogram the TAM to achieve M1 macrophage activation and could also restore the potent tumor-killing activity of macrophages while switching their metabolic mode from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis. In addition, the repolarizing effect of SnSe NSs on macrophages was validated in a coculture model of bone marrow-derived macrophages, in three patient-derived malignant pleural effusion and in vivo mouse model. This study proposes a feasible therapeutic strategy for depleting lactate and thus ameliorating acidic TME employing Se-containing nanosheets, which could further amply the effects of TAM-based antitumor immunotherapy.

Although photothermal therapy is widely employed for tumor treatment because of its high tumor cell selectivity and low apoptosis resistance, heat-shock proteins (HSPs) impart resistance to heat-induced apoptosis in tumor cells, thus diminishing the therapeutic effectiveness. To this end, tin selenide (SnSe) was grown in situ on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets to construct a photothermal–thermoelectric SnSe/rGO nanosystem. The rGO component converted near-infrared light energy into localized thermal energy, resulting in the thermal ablation of tumor cells. Meanwhile, SnSe converted temperature fluctuations into pyroelectric charges, which interacted with surrounding O2 molecules to generate reactive oxygen species that oxidized the amino acids on the HSPs, which changed the protein conformation and functionally damaged the tumor cells. In addition, rGO functioned as an efficient electron acceptor to increase electron mobility, thus enhancing the thermoelectric conversion efficiency of SnSe. Then, the SnSe/rGO nanosystem was incorporated into a poly-l-lactic acid bone scaffold to prevent tumor recurrence. Results showed that the composite scaffold not only exhibited good photothermal and thermoelectric effects. In vitro cell tests demonstrated that the scaffold generated 1O2 based on temperature fluctuations and the antitumor rate reached 86.6% against osteosarcoma MG-63 cells.

Polycrystalline SnSe is more favorable for practical applications compared with its single-crystalline counterpart due to its easier scalability and mechanical robustness. However, its TE performance is limited by poor electrical transport properties, resulting in a low carrier concentration and modest power factor. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that alkali metal Li doping serves as an effective carrier engineering strategy to overcome performance limitations. First-principles calculations reveal that Li acts as an efficient acceptor, inducing a significant charge transfer and modifying the electronic structure. Experimentally, doping Li increases the carrier concentration 2 orders of magnitude up to 1.8 × 1019 cm–3, resulting in significantly enhanced electrical conductivity and a peak power factor of 7.1 μW cm–1 K–2. Eventually, a high zT value of ∼2.0 at 823 K is achieved in Li-doped SnSe. This work offers important insight for the rational design of high-performance polycrystalline SnSe.

Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) plays a crucial role in environmental remediation, chemical synthesis, and energy storage. Nevertheless, its industrial production is energy consuming with significant environmental burdens. Here we show a proof-of-concept thermoelectrocatalytic strategy for H 2 O 2 production directly from seawater, driven solely by low-grade waste heat. A low-temperature thermoelectric (TE) material, Na- and Pb-codoped SnSe, is designed as a catalyst that enables efficient H 2 O 2 generation under a moderate temperature gradient (Δ T ). This system achieves an H 2 O 2 production rate of 6.1 mmol g −1 h −1 from seawater under Δ T = 120 K, which is competitive with the representative photocatalytic systems. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that Na/Pb-codoping improves the TE properties, promotes charge carrier migration under Δ T , and promotes the oxygen reduction reaction toward H 2 O 2 formation. The naturally formed strong electric layer at the catalyst-seawater interface further promotes both reaction kinetics and thermodynamic driving forces. Our finding provides a sustainable route for H 2 O 2 production from seawater using waste heat and demonstrates great potential of TE-catalysis for waste heat utilization.

SnSe is considered as one of the most promising candidates for thermoelectric application because of its attractive performance recently. In this work, a high magnetic field (5 T) is applied during the solution synthesis process. With the assist of the high magnetic field, nanopores and quantum dots (Sn, Se) are induced in the Ga doped p-type polycrystalline SnSe. It is found that an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.19 W m −1 K −1 is caused by enhanced phonon scattering due to the presence of nanopores, quantum dots, lattice strain in dislocation networks. The enhanced density of states induced by Sn and Se quantum dots contributes to enhanced Seebeck coefficient. The enhanced electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient give rise to a significant enhancement in power factor over the whole temperature range. The maximum power factor reaches to 6.12 μW cm −1 K −2 at 873 K for the sample prepared under high magnetic field. Consequently, a peak ZT of 2.0 as well as a high average ZT of 0.74 (300–873 K) is achieved in 5 T -NP/QD Sn 0.975 Ga 0.025 Se sample. This study provides an important direction for developing high performance thermoelectric materials by structural manipulation with the aid of high magnetic field in solution chemistry.

Here, Pb/Y codoped SnSe nanorods were fabricated via a bottom-up, cost-effective hydrothermal method. The formation of nanorod structures generating high-density grain boundaries significantly enhances phonon scattering, serving as the primary mechanism for lattice thermal conductivity reduction. Furthermore, Y-element enrichment regions, nanoprecipitates, and dense dislocation networks provide additional phonon scattering that further suppresses phonon transport. These multiscale structural features synergistically impede phonon propagation across all frequency ranges, ultimately yielding an ultralow κL of 0.157 W m–1 K–1 at 873 K in the Pb and Y codoped SnSe nanorods. Meanwhile, Pb/Y codoping enhances carrier concentration, leading to a sharp increase in electrical conductivity in Sn0.99–xPb0.01YxSe nanorods. Concurrently, the electrical transport properties are significantly improved, resulting in enhanced power factor. As a result, this carrier and phonon synergistic optimization contributes to a peak ZT of 1.74 at 873 K in Sn0.985Pb0.01Y0.005Se nanorods. This work provides insights for developing high-performance polycrystalline SnSe through advanced doping strategies and structural design.
