In regard to the synthesis of Ni x Fe y O 4 nanoparticles , a new process was presented that used granulated sodium alginate (Na-ALG) prepared by a high-shear wet granulator (HSWG). By using this synthesis route, Na-ALG granules were added directly into metal salt solutions to obtain respective ferrite oxide nanoparticles based on a solid-liquid ion-exchange reaction. The different Ni x Fe y O 4 nanopowder samples were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Significant increases in the particle sizes were observed with increased calcination temperatures in this investigation. The structural analysis of Ni x Fe y O 4 obtained by XRD Rietveld refinement agreed with the simulated models using the Materials Studio (MS) software. The structural differences of Ni x Fe y O 4 due to the increasing Ni 2+ concentrations from 0.4 to 1.43 mol were investigated with nominal compositions and confirmed by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The magnetic investigations were carried out using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and a maximum saturation magnetization (Ms = 37.26 emu/g) was recorded at 20000 Oe with the Ni 0.4 Fe 2.6 O 4 nanoparticles. All samples showed supermagnetic properties when the Ms values decreased as the Ni 2+ concentrations increased. Finally, the synthesized Ni x Fe y O 4 samples exhibited excellent discharge-storage capacities even after 200 cycles. This new process not only ensured that the operation was easier to scale up but also much greener since it consumed less than 4% of the water compared with other processes in the literature.

In this study, a natural polymer-based organic flocculant (sodium alginate-methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, SA-PDMC) was synthesized by graft copolymerization. The optimum preparation procedures were determined by single factor experiments. The flocculation behaviors of SA-PDMC were investigated in humic acid (HA) and kaolin suspension considering the effects of flocculant doses and initial pH. The results indicated that charge neutralization and bridging action played an important role in the removals of HA and kaolin. Also, SA-PDMC performed well in a wide pH range of 5.0−10.0. Besides, SA-PDMC, as polyaluminium (PAC) aid, was investigated in the lake water treatment. The ratio of PAC and SA-PDMC was optimized through response surface methodology based on a central composite design. Results showed that SA-PDMC and PAC have a strong synergy, under optimal conditions SA-PDMC can reduce the dose of PAC by 40 % while ensuring the water quality.

Oily wastewater seriously endangers human health. Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene has attracted extensive attention as a building block for separating membranes because of its unique two-dimensional structure and excellent hydrophilicity. In this study, we constructed a superwetting Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene membrane intercalated with sodium alginate. The hydrophilic sodium alginate not only enlarged the nanochannel of the MXene membrane but also decorated the membrane surface and endowed the membrane with excellent surface superwetting properties. The underwater oil contact angle (OCA) was about 151°, indicating an extremely low adhesion between oil and membrane surface. The membrane could also separate a series of oil-water emulsions with high separation efficiency and flux. Due to its excellent underwater superoleophobicity, the membrane demonstrated outstanding antifouling property. Excellent separation performance was maintained even after separation cycles. This work provides insights into the rational use of MXene-based membranes design and demonstrates its potential in the field of membrane separation.

Sodium alginate (SA) has been widely used in various fields of daily life. However, the lack of antibacterial properties of SA limits its further application. In this work, we successfully developed the antimicrobial SA derivative through the covalent coupling between organosilane quaternary ammonium salt DC-5700 (TSA) and SA using a one-pot reaction. The corresponding structures, molecular weights, morphologies, thermal properties, and viscosity of the SA-TSA samples were comprehensively characterized by FTIR, GPC, SEM, TGA, and rotational rheometer. The best antibacterial efficiency against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli can reach up to 99.6% and 99.3%, respectively. Specifically, great biocompatibility (> 80%) was observed when the concentration of best antibacterial SA-TSA3 was < 0.50 g/mL. Moreover, the antibacterial potential utility of antibacterial SA-TSA3 was demonstrated by the fabrication of SA beads. Finally, this antibacterial material of SA-TSA3 was expected to show great potential application in biomedical or textile fields. Graphical abstract

In the present work, CdS nanoparticles were integrated into sodium alginate aerogel matrix through a facile method. The CdS particles were successfully incorporated into the network of sodium alginate and highly distributed. Moreover, the accessibility of pore structures of sodium alginate was well-preserved. The resulting hybrid aerogels demonstrated high photocatalytic ability towards Cr (VI) reduction. SA/CdS-2 (mass ratio SA: CdS = 1:2) exhibited the highest reduction efficiency of Cr (VI), which could reduce the concentration of Cr (VI) to 0 mg/L after 60 min illumination. A probably adsorption-photoreduction mechanism was proposed and discussed in detail. The aerogels had excellent reusability and recyclability, avoiding secondary pollution. This work holds a promise to design and fabrication of CdS particles into three-dimensional aerogel network.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising candidates applied to large-scale energy storage systems owing to abundant sodium resources and high economic efficiency. Layered manganese-based oxides as a prevailing cathode for sodium-ion batteries have been extensively studied, where doping or coating has been demonstrated to improve the electrochemical performance. However, the binder that tends to be the popular poly(vinylidene difluoride), is revealed to generate swellability upon cycling, leading to electrode material cracks and disconnection with current collectors. For the above issues, in this work, environmentally friendly sodium alginate is utilized as the aqueous binder in a conventional layered transition-metal oxide cathode P2-Na2/3MnO2 for SIBs. Through credible comparative experiments, sodium alginate is testified to play an essential role in suppressing cracks on the surface of materials, preventing surge in charge-transfer resistance and restraining detachment between electrode and current collector. Therefore, sodium alginate is proved to be an ideal binder to match with P2-Na2/3MnO2, where some issues existed before, as a promising cathode material with excellent performance and low cost. This study displays that improving battery performance by exploring suitable binder systems can equal or even exceed the performance improvement through modification of the material itself, and this perspective of enhancement should not be ignored.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) covered by polymer coatings, cross-linked by weak coordination bonds were expected to present a reversible responsiveness under on-off ultrasound stimuli. Herein, we prepared a sodium alginate (SA) modified MSN with carboxyl-calcium (COO−-Ca2+) coordination bonds in the modified layer, which could block the mesopores of MSN and effectively prevent the cargo from pre-releasing before stimulation. The coordination bonds would be destroyed under the stimulation of low intensity ultrasound (20 kHz) or high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU, 1.1 MHz), leading to a rapid and significant cargo release, and then they could be reformed when ultrasound was turned off, resulting in an instant cargo release stopping. The reversible cleavage and reformation of this coordination bonds under on-off ultrasound stimulus were confirmed by the gel-sol transition behaviors of the SA-CaCl2 gels. An excellent real-time control of rhodamine B (RhB) release performance was obtained under the ultrasound stimuli. Obviously, the cargo release ratio could reach to nearly 40% when HIFU (80 W) was turned on for 5 min, and remained basically constant when ultrasound was turned off, which would finally reach to nearly 100% within 30 min under this on-off pulsatile status. These hybrid MSN based nanoparticles with excellent reversible ultrasound on-off responsiveness were of great interest in on-demand drug delivery applications in the future.

Certain geologic conditions in silty soils exhibit poor engineering properties, including low strength and instability, which threaten the stability of geotechnical systems. This study introduces a novel soil stabilization approach using a ternary interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) formed through the synergistic reaction of sodium alginate (SA), acrylamide (AM), and hexadecyl methacrylate (HMA). This strategy is innovative because it leverages both hydrophobic association and ionic cross-linking to create a robust gel matrix that effectively binds soil particles. A three-factor, three-level orthogonal design was used to optimize the component ratios (SA:AM:HMA). Using SA as a control, conduct a dry-wet cycle test to compare changes in unconfined compressive strength between SA and SA-modified polymer-treated soils. Results indicate that after 28 days of curing, soil samples treated with the optimal mixture (1.5:1.5:2.5) attained a maximum unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 2405.69 kPa. Compared to untreated soil, the cohesion significantly increased to 119.66 kPa, while the internal friction angle showed no significant change. The hydraulic conductivity was reduced to 3.45 × 10 −6 cm/s. The durability of SA-modified polymer-stabilized soil is significantly superior to that of SA. Microstructural analyses confirmed that the polymer gel enhances soil-polymer interaction through pore-filling and chemisorption, drastically improving the pore structure and mechanical properties. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of this novel biopolymer-based stabilizer in silty soil improvement.

Magnetic ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles embedded sodium alginate (SA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/calciumgel composites (MSPC) were synthesized for the removal of Cd2+. The physicochemical properties of the composite gel ball were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), power X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Quantitative adsorptions experiments were performed in view of sorbent dosage, pH, contact time, and temperature. Results showed that the optimum quantity of particles was 1.2 gL−1, when the Cd2+ concentration was fixed at 150 mg/L. The optimum pH for adsorption is 6.2. When the initial Cd2+ concentration was from 50 to 200 mgL−1, the adsorption equilibrium time was 80–120 minutes. The isotherms results showed the maximum sorption was 97.8 mg/g calculated from the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could be well described by the sorption of Cd2+ in the sediment. The correlation coefficients (R2) were all higher than 0.96. Results showed that MSPC was a practical and low-cost material for heavy metal removal from the river sediment and simultaneously solves the problems in convenient separation under additional magnetic field.

In this study, biomimetic sodium alginate (SA)/silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds were successfully fabricated by supercritical CO 2 technology. The SA/SF scaffolds exhibited an interconnected porous and extracellular matrix (ECM)-like nanofibrous structures. Moreover, the SA microparticles were embedded in the SF scaffolds. Increasing the content of SA microparticles could improve tensile strength and compressive strength of the SF scaffolds and reduce the porosity of the SF scaffolds. The addition of the SA microparticles could also regulate the degradation rate of the SA/SF scaffolds. Furthermore, the results of in vitro biocompatibility evaluation, indicated that the SA/SF scaffolds exhibited no obvious cytotoxicity and higher cell adhesion ability and were more favorable for L929 fibroblasts proliferation than pure SF scaffolds. Therefore, the SA/SF scaffolds with ECM-like nanofibrous and interconnected porous structure have potential application in skin tissue engineering.

Bone tissue engineering is a promising approach for tackling clinical challenges. Osteoprogenitor cells, osteogenic factors, and osteoinductive/osteoconductive scaffolds are employed in bone tissue engineering. However, scaffold materials remain limited due to their source, low biocompatibility, and so on. In this study, a composite hydrogel scaffold composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and sodium alginate (SA) was manufactured using three-dimensional printing. Naringin (NG) and calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) were used as osteogenic factors in the fabrication of drug-loaded scaffolds. Investigation using animal experiments, as well as scanning electron microscopy, cell counting kit-8 testing, alkaline phosphatase staining, and alizarin red-D staining of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell culture showed that the three scaffolds displayed similar physicochemical properties and that the HA/SA/NG and HA/SA/CGRP scaffolds displayed better osteogenesis than that of the HA/SA scaffold. Thus, the HA/SA scaffold could be a biocompatible material with potential applications in bone regeneration. Meanwhile, NG and CGRP doping could result in better and more positive proliferation and differentiation.

High-stretch plant protein hydrogels exhibit significant potential for application in the food industry and have attracted widespread attention. Inspired by the structure of fascia, we constructed a soy protein‑sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical performance through compression molding. Soy protein amyloid fibrils (SAFs), which exhibited a highly ordered cross- β structure, were selected as the protein source due to their functional properties. SA was a vital compound capable of constructing a hydrogel network in the presence of Ca 2+ . The results indicated that this method successfully facilitated a more compact network structure. Moreover, hydrogen bond interactions, along with the uniform distribution of Ca 2+ within the hydrogel network, played a crucial role in determining the structural properties of the system, as proved by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The most strained performance (SAFs-2% SA-Ca 2+ ) was obtained, exhibiting superior tensile properties with a tensile strain reaching up to 91.2%. This study introduced a unique method for utilizing SAFs in the development of mixture hydrogel systems, while providing a robust scientific foundation for the development of innovative food protein structures.
