In this paper, a highly selective sample cleanup procedure combing dummy molecular imprinting and solid-phase extraction (DMIP–SPE) was developed for the isolation and determination of bisphenol A (BPA) in tap water. The novel hollow porous dummy molecularly imprinted polymer (HPDMIP) was prepared adopting a sacrificial support approach, using tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), whose structure was similar to that of BPA, as the dummy template and mesoporous MCM-48 nanospheres as the support. Owing to a very short distance between the binding sites and the surface, a large surface area and a good steric structure to match its imprint molecules, the maximum adsorption capacities ( Q max ) of the dummy-imprinted and non-imprinted sorbents for BPA were as high as 445 and 340 μmol g –1 , respectively, and the adsorption reached about 73% of Q max in 10 min. Meanwhile, a method was developed for the determination of BPA using HPDMIP as a solid-phase extraction enrichment sorbent coupled with HPLC . Under the optimum experimental conditions, HPDMIP exhibited satisfactory results in the enrichment and determination of BPA in tap water with a recovery rate of 95–105%, and relative standard deviations of below 6%, and it can achieve a limit of detection as low as 3 ng mL −1 . The developed extraction protocol eliminated the effect of template leakage on quantitative analysis and could be applied for the determination of BPA in complicated functional samples.

Highly-intelligent user-friendly sensing strategies are becoming desperately demanded and indispensable in under-developed nations and resources-insufficient areas. Herein, an intelligent sensing platform has been successfully established incorporating smartphone with machine vision and deep learning function, 3D-printed handheld device, and paper microfluidic chip stained with tri-emission ratiometric-fluorescence (FL) carbon dots (TCDs). The intelligent system can quantify zinc ion (Zn 2+ ) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) only through a single-step operation on smartphone. TCDs, engendering bright blue and cyan FL as well as weak red one at 370 nm excitation, were prepared hydrothermally using tartaric acid and alizarin carmine. As-prepared TCDs exhibit continuous FL color transformation from blue to purple to blue with the addition of Zn 2+ and EDTA. Subsequently, TCDs-based paper chip is explored to enable field-portable sequential discrimination of Zn 2+ and EDTA. Intriguingly, the proposed sensor is utilized for fast and intelligent quantification of Zn 2+ and EDTA in soil filtrate, plant sap and tap water with a low detection limit of 3.8 μM and 7.9 μM, as well as wide linear correlations of 0–280 µM and 0–560 µM, respectively. It is eagerly anticipated that our methodologies will become the strong impetus for new round of technological transformation for analyte assay.

An ingenious and universal design of fluorescent/electrochemical dual-signal mode sensing platform was constructed for the sensitive, selective and accurate detection of tetracycline (TET). Apt-functionalized nano-magnetic beads (Fe 3 O 4 -Apt) as capture probe, Apt-complementary short-chain functionalized fluorescent MOF loaded with methylene blue (MB) (cDNA-MOF-MB) as dual-signal tag were prepared. The sensing platform (Fe 3 O 4 -Apt/cDNA-MOF-MB) was formed based on the base complementary pairing of Apt and cDNA. With the help of Apt for target recognition, together with magnetic separation technology, a dual-signal mode biosensor was constructed. The dual-signal mode biosensor exhibited a wide linear concentration range from 1.00 × 10 −9 g/mL to 1.00 × 10 −4 g/mL with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.69 × 10 −10 g/mL (fluorescence mode assay) and 1.15 × 10 −10 g/mL (electrochemical mode assay). The proposed biosensor had been successfully applied to the determination of TET content in real samples with satisfactory recoveries (94.99–101.30%).

Overuse of the amphenicol antibiotics chloramphenicol (CHL) and thiamphenicol (TAP) poses a great threat to ecosystem safety and human health. The strain, Nocardioides sp. LMS-CY, Nocardioides sp. QY071 and Nocardioides sp. L-11A, classified as a gram-positive actinomycete, harbours a complete CHL metabolic pathway. However, the metabolic genes (clusters) involved in the entire pathway in gram-positive actinomycetes are still limited. Here, chlOR LMS , chlOR QY071 and chlOR L-11A completely from the actinomycete Nocardioides spp. were found to act on the C 1 -OH of the CHL/TAP side chain, directly converting CHL/TAP to 4-nitrobenzaldehyde (PNBD)/4-methylsulfonyl benzaldehyde (PMBD) and transforming PNBD/PMBD into 4-nitrobenzyl alcohol (PNBM)/4-methylsulfonyl phenyl methanol (PMBM). Furthermore, oxidoreductases can transform PNBM into 4-nitrobenzoate (PNBA). The oxidoreductases ChlOR LMS , ChlOR QY071 and ChlOR L-11A were all classified as cellobiose dehydrogenases from the glucose methanol choline (GMC) family. Based on the Swiss-Prot database, ChlOR QY071 exhibited a lower identity (27.12%–35.10% similarity) with the reported oxidoreductases. Enzymatic and molecular docking analyses showed that ChlOR QY071 and ChlOR L-11A from the two similar genomes were remarkably more effective in metabolizing CHL than ChlOR LMS . Overall, the detailed resistance mechanism of CHL/TAP by actinomycete strains isolated from soil and livestock manure will provide insights into the occurrence of CHL/TAP resistance genes in the environment, resistance risk and bioremediation of CHL/TAP-contaminated environments.
