Water is a precious resource in space stations, and wastewater recycling is necessary to meet the needs of astronauts. In that respect, applying the high anti-pollution disk tubular reverse osmosis (DTRO) technique is a reliable way to remove pollutes from wastewater. Thin film composite (TFC) membrane treatment is the most frequently employed solution for purifying wastewater in industry; however, the intrinsic weaknesses of polymer membrane substrates, e.g., poor mechanical property, foulant adsorption and low resistance to acidic/basic conditions, greatly hamper their applications. In this study, the novel polysulfate (PSE) membrane substrates were prepared via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The microstructure and performance of PSE membrane substrates were comprehensively investigated at varying polymer concentration and nanoparticle types. The results showed that adding nanosilver to the support layer significantly enhanced the TFC- PSE/Ag membrane performance (up to 57 %) and tensile strength (by 4.57 ± 0.13). According to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, the optimized geometric design of deflectors would have noticeably improved the flow field distribution and strength, which was consistent with experimental data. The DTRO modules enabled the effective management of wastewater using simulated space bathing wastewater. The effluent met the water reuse criteria in terms of COD concentration, NH 3 -N concentration, conductivity and turbidity whose respective values were 15 mg/L, 0.21 mg/L, 60 μS/cm, and 0.9 NTU. The proposed DTRO modules own antifouling and acid/alkaline-resistance, indicating their remarkable application potential in the large-scale recovery of bathing wastewater from the earth or space station.

In this work, a novel semi-aromatic polyamide RO membrane was fabricated by using a new self-made dendritic molecule trimesoylamidoamine (TMAAM) as a key functional amine monomer that combined 1,3-diamino-2-propanol (DAP) to react with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) through interfacial polymerization technology. By adjusting the TMAAM concentration and amine-immersion mode, this new TMAAM-based semi-aromatic polyamide RO membrane exhibits simultaneously improved water permeability, antifouling and chlorine-tolerant properties. The introduced TMAAM units in polyamide chains can enhance the TMAAM-based membrane's water flux due to its dendritic structure as well as rich hydrophilic groups, and the DAP–TMAAM–TMC membrane prepared via the new two-step amine-immersion mode has 1.9 times more water flux without loss of salt rejection than the pristine DAP–TMC membrane and also shows higher water flux than the hand-cast conventional aromatic polyamide MPD–TMC membrane, respectively. At the same time, the regularly distributed hydroxyl groups and aliphatic amide bonds in TMAAM units contribute to the improved hydrophilicity and chlorine-tolerant property of the resultant DAP–TMAAM–TMC membrane, respectively. It is also demonstrated that the new two-step amine-immersion mode leads to a much smoother surface which endows the resultant DAP–TMAAM–TMC membrane with a favorable antifouling ability. This research provides us with a promising functional amine monomer and a new membrane formation method to fabricate a high performance RO membrane.

In order to efficiently remove the heavy metal ions in wastewater, a novel thin film composite (TFC)-type forward osmosis (FO) membrane was prepared specifically with the glass nanofiber supporting layer and the bovine serum albumin (BSA)-embedded polyamide (PA) swellable active layer, and used for the removal of heavy metal ions from water by enhanced dissolution-diffusion-flow FO process. The separation results indicated that the appropriate addition of BSA in the PA active layer improved the dissolution-diffusion process of the traditional PA layer by providing the swellable sites as water channels in aqueous solutions and enhanced the rejection effect on heavy metal ions. In addition, the ultra large porosity and pore size of the glass nanofiber supporting layer provided smooth flow channels, accelerating the flow process and alleviating the concentration polarization problem, with the structural parameter (S) value decreasing to 172 μm. This paper proved that the specific structural construction of the functional membranes was a convenient method to prepare applicable membranes with tunable FO performances.

Polyamide/polyethylene thin film composite (PA/PE-TFC) NF membranes were prepared from reverse-phase interface polymerization (RIP) for improved Mg(II)/Li(I) separation. RIP processes between 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride (TMC) in bottom organic phase and piperazine (PIP) in upper aqueous phase were developed to form continuous and intact surface PA separation layers on PE porous substrates thinner than traditional polysulfone (PSF) based substrates. After activation with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), PA/PE-TFC-IPA NF membranes were formed, whose NF performance could be tuned by adjusting the preparation conditions. When TMC concentration was kept at 0.15 % w/v, RIP with low PIP concentration (0.025 wt%) yield PA/PE-TFC-IPA NF membranes with negatively charged surfaces , high Na 2 SO 4 rejection rate (95 % ± 3 %) and water permeance (13–19 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ). RIP with high PIP concentration (0.3 wt%) formed PA/PE-TFC-IPA NF membranes with less negative surfaces, high MgCl 2 rejection rate (94.3 ± 0.7 %), low water permeance (4.8 ± 0.3 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 ), and high Mg(II)/Li(I) separation coefficient S Li/Mg (18 ± 1) for 1000 ppm LiCl and MgCl 2 mixed solution. PA/PE-TFC-IPA NF membranes also showed good long-term stability and improved anti-fouling performance for positively charged pollutants, bearing high potential for applications in the lithium extraction processes.

This paper presented the initial investigation into the impact of Penicillium polonicum fermentation on the functional components and bioactivities of navel orange peel. The fermentation process resulted in a notable enhancement of the total flavonoid content (TFC), total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity, antibacterial activity, and antiglycation activity of orange peel. Eighteen flavonoids were isolated and identified from the ethanolic extract of fermented orange peel (FEE) by employing chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. The results of the HPLC analysis showed that three flavanones (naringenin, hesperetin, and isosakuranetin) were newly produced and present in high concentrations in FEE, with hesperetin being the most abundant component (39.74 mg/g) in comparison to the ethanolic extract of unfermented orange peel (EE). The TPC, TFC, antioxidant, and antiglycation activities of FEE, as well as the enzymatic activity of β-glucosidase in the fermented orange peels, showed a gradual increase with the progression of fermentation time over a five-month period. HPLC analysis revealed that the fermentation metabolites generated by P. polonicum in rice and orange peel media exhibited distinct profiles, indicating that the fermentation of orange peel by P. polonicum did not result in the production of potential mycotoxins. The findings of this study provided a scientific basis for the high-value utilization of navel orange peels and established a reference point for the potential applications of other peel byproducts via microbial fermentation.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is a technique that provides short-term supports to the heart and lungs. It removes CO 2 from the blood and provides enough oxygen, which is a huge help in the fight against COVID-19. As the key component, the artificial lung membranes have evolved in three generations including silicon, polypropylene and poly (4-methyl-1-pentene). Herein, we for the first time design and fabricate a novel poly (4-methyl-1-pentene)/polypropylene (PMP/PP) thin film composite (TFC) membrane with the anticoagulant coating composed of poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) and cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol). Poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) provides sulfonic acid groups to inhibit the coagulant factors (FVIII and FXII), and cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol) increase the stability of the anticoagulant coating and further improve the hydrophilicity via abundant hydroxyl groups to depress the protein adsorption. Long-term anticoagulant property was demonstrated by whole human blood for 28 days. Blood compatibility was evaluated by hemolysis rate, anticoagulation activity (APTT, TT and PT), complement activation, platelet activation and contact activation. Pure CO 2 , O 2 and N 2 permeation rates were determined to evaluate the mass transfer properties of PMP/PP TFC membranes. Gas permeation results revealed that gas permeation flux increased in the TFC membranes because of the decrease of crystallinity. Overall, the so prepared PMP/PP membrane shows good CO 2 /O 2 selectivity and blood compatibility as novel TFC artificial lung membrane.

Thin film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes supported by polymeric membranes have suffered from limited mechanical properties and chemical cleaning stability, resulting in an increasing operation cost. Strengthening the support of TFC membranes is expected to provide great stability for membranes. This work provided a TFC membrane constructed on the poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) incorporated carbon nanotube film, which was named CNT/PVA-TFC. Characteristics of substrates, including morphology, pore size, and mechanical properties, were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), intrusion mercury porosimetry and tensile method. The results demonstrated that PVA can improve the mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of the CNT film. The morphology, physicochemical properties and separation performance of CNT/PVA-TFC were also investigated. CNT/PVA-TFC showed great enhancement of mechanical properties with its elastic modulus and hardness approximately 330% and 200% of the control, respectively. Furthermore, CNT/PVA-TFC achieved greater resistance to caustic cleaning than TFC membranes supported by polymeric membranes. In addition, CNT/PVA-TFC exhibited an excellent flux decline of 29.3% and a flux recovery of 97.0%. The mechanism of the support of CNT and enhancement of PVA was systematically studied. This work highlighted the feasibility of fabricating TFC membranes on the CNT/PVA film, providing a new insight to alternate the polymeric substrate of TFC membranes.

Developing a forward osmosis (FO) membrane with superior ammonia selectivity and robust antifouling performance is important for treating domestic wastewater (DW) but challenging due to the similar polarities and hydraulic radii of NH 4 + and water molecules. Herein, we investigated the feasibility of using polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer to simultaneously enhance the ammonia rejection rate and antifouling capacity of the thin-film composite (TFC) FO membrane. PAMAM dendrimer with abundant, easily-protonated, terminal amine groups was grafted on TFC-FO membrane surface via covalent bonds , which inspired the TFC-FO membrane surface with appreciable Zeta potential (isoelectric point: pH = 5.5) and outstanding hydrophilicity (water contact angle: 39.83 ± 0.57°). Benefiting from the electrostatic repulsion between the protonated amine layer and NH 4 + -N as well as the concentration-induced diffusion resistance, the introduction of PAMAM dendrimer endowed the grafted membrane with a superior NH 4 + -N rejection rate of 98.23% and a significantly reduced the reverse solute flux when using NH 4 Cl solutions as feed solution. Meanwhile, the perfect balance between the electrostatic repulsion to positively-charged micromoleculer ions (metal ions and NH 4 + -N) and the electrostatic attraction to negatively-charged macromolecular organic foulants together with the hydrophilic nature of amine groups facilitated the enhancement of the grafted membranes in antifouling capacity and hence the NH 4 + -N selectivity (rejection rate of 91.81%) during the concentration of raw DW. The overall approach of this work opens up a frontier for preparation of ammonia-selective and antifouling TFC-FO membrane.

In this study, copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) modified polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) membranes with long-lasting antibacterial properties and anti-protein-fouling properties were prepared by surface coating method. During modification, carboxylated chitosan (CCTS), a hydrophilic natural polymer, was coated onto the membrane surface, which was then treated with CuCl 2 aqueous solutions and cross-linking agent glutaraldehyde to reduce the Cu 2+ to CuNPs in situ and fix them in the cross-linked coating layer. The formation of CuNPs was confirmed by SEM, EDS and XPS analysis. Copper ion release measurement showed CuNPs modified TFC membranes (PA-CCTS-Cu) could release Cu 2+ in a slow and sustainable way due to chelating effect between CCTS and Cu 2+ . PA-CCTS-Cu had antibacterial efficiency of above 99% and could maintain it after 90 days’ immersion in water. PA-CCTS-Cu also exhibited better anti-protein-fouling performance than the pristine TFC membrane, with lower reduction of flux after fouling and higher recovery after cleaning in fouling test using bovine serum albumin as model foulant. This enhanced anti-protein-fouling performance was ascribed to the CCTS coating layer, which had enhanced hydrophilicity as assessed by contact angle measurement.

The deep role and mechanism of post-treatment in the morphology and performance of thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membranes have rarely been revealed. In this work, four solutions of pure water, hexane , Na 2 CO 3 , and glycerol were selected for the post-treatment of TFC-NF membranes, and the performances of the resultant NF membranes were systematically investigated. The results showed that the hexane could effectively remove the residual acyl chloride groups and prevent the subsequent second growth of polyamide (PA) layers, thus leading to the formation of smoother and thinner PA membranes with higher water permeance and excellent salt rejections. Hydrolysis and swelling of unstable PA fragments in solutions (water, Na 2 CO 3 , and glycerin) contributed to greater negative charge, higher hydrophilicity , and enlarged pore size. The resultant NF membranes exhibited significantly enhanced water permeance and comparable separation behaviors to the control NF membrane. In addition, the well-constructed NF membranes possessed superior monovalent/multivalent ion selectivity , excellent antifouling, and stability. The mechanisms of the post-treatment on the performance enhancement of NF membranes were proposed from the perspective of interfacial interactions . The facile post-treatment strategy provides new insights into tailoring high-performance NF membranes for water treatment applications.

The high efficiency and adaptability of reverse osmosis (RO) are two main reasons this separation technology is accepted worldwide, depending on its various uses, such as water purification, desalination, and concentration. The potential of RO can be enhanced by utilizing the hollow fiber (HF) mode, benefiting from higher packing density, ease of cleaning, and cost competitiveness. However, its suitability for RO applications becomes questionable due to its weaker and fragile mechanical resilience. To solve the abovementioned issue and improve the mechanical strength and burst/crush pressure, we propose optimizing the selective layer of the TFC-RO membrane using tannic acid complexation with FeCl 3 . The polyethersulfone (PES) support layer was initially fabricated to host the polyamide (PA) layer. Subsequently, the introduction of tannic acid-ferric chloride complexation was implemented as a sandwich layer between the aqueous and organic phase reactions to host a coherent and selective PA layer to further enhance its performance by controlling the kinetics of interfacial polymerization (IP). The surface morphology, physicochemical properties, and underlying reactions were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle measurements. The TFC-RO membrane M_TA0.2/Fe7.5 (7.5 mM FeCl 3 & 0.2 wt% tannic acid) showed significant improvement in pure water permeance and salt rejection along with 7.23 MPa of burst pressure and 68.41 % strain, which proves superior elasticity and mechanical robustness because of PA TA/Fe 3+ complexes formed during the IP. Moreover, the proposed facile tannic acid modification is effective and scalable. It significantly improves the mechanical efficacy of the HF TFC-RO membrane, solving a great problem for its commercial adaptability for RO applications and paving the way for smoother industrial translation for direct human factor applications.

This study aims to develop a new strategy to fabricate nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high removal efficiency for heavy metal ions in wide acidic pH range. Unlike conventional polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based thin film composite (TFC) membranes that requires multiple coating steps, the new NF membrane was fabricated through direct interfacial polymerization with positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) on PAN substrates blended with sulfonated polyarylene ether benzonitrile (SPEB). The unique surface migration effect of SPEB led to a smoother, more hydrophilic surface and sponge-like structure of the substrate. Such a modified structure was found to be crucial to achieve smaller pore size as well as better adhesion of the selective layer and the substrate of the modified TFC membrane. The resultant NF membrane has a reasonably high pure water permeability of 7.62 ± 0.81 LMH·bar −1 , and a molecular weight cut-off of 300 Da. It achieved a reasonably high rejection towards heavy metal cations such as Pb 2+ , Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ over 93.0% in a wide acidic pH range. This work may provide insightful guidelines for upgrading current NF membranes for heavy metal removals in harsh acidic environments.
