Flexible TPU strain sensors with tunable sensitivity and stretchability by coupling AgNWs with rGO

Yan Li,Shan Wang,Zhi-chao Xiao,Yi Yang,Bo-wen Deng,Bo Yin,Kai Ke,Ming-bo Yang

Wearable strain sensors are a compelling need for health monitoring while designing facile and flexible strain sensors with both super-high sensitivity and a wide strain range in an environment-friendly and scalable way remains challenging. Besides, the mechanism underlying these sensors is still insufficiently studied. Here, we propose a handy method to fabricate flexible strain sensors based on an electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) mat by coupling silver nanowires (AgNWs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The TPU-based strain sensors with AgNWs and rGO alone exhibited high strain sensitivity and a broad working range, respectively, due to the morphological differences between the two types of nanomaterials. In contrast, the rGO/AgNWs/TPU sensor showed a synergistic effect on strain sensitivity and sensing range because of the interaction between the AgNWs and rGO, as well as the coupling effect arising from their assembly. For instance, the sensors with hybrid nanomaterials had ultrahigh sensitivity (gauge factor, GF ≈ 4.4 × 107) and a wider detection range in comparison with the counterpart strain sensors with AgNWs/TPU and rGO/TPU (both GFs in the range of hundreds). Besides, the sensors showed reliable responses to various frequencies and strains, as well as long-term stretching (1000 cycles). These strain sensors were applied to monitor human body motions, such as joint motion and muscle movement, which revealed their potential in healthcare and human-machine interfacing applications.

Fabrication of Humidity Sensors Based on Nitrogen-Doped Graphene Quantum Dot-Embedded PVDF/TPU Membrane

Zhu Xingwei,Cheng Yongchao,Gu Xiuquan

A flexible temperature and humidity sensor has been developed based on a composite of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The sensor performance was optimized by introducing graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) and ionic liquids (TFSI) into the polymer composite. This type of humidity sensors has high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent stability, making it suitable for use in wearable health monitoring. The addition of TPU into PVDF facilitates the formation of a porous structure which has both a large specific surface area and high hydrophilicity. After optimizing the PVDF/TPU mass ratio to 5:3, such a humidity sensor displays 1.46 times higher sensitivity than that of pure PVDF film, with a linear response range of 10–90% relative humidity. The response time and recovery time are 7.67 s and 6.37 s, respectively. Owing to the improved hydrophobicity, the sensors also exhibit a good stability in a high humidity environment for > 10 days without significant degradation. Moreover, such a composite also has the capability to distinguish normal breathing from rapid breathing, demonstrating its potential in wearable health monitoring.

Synergistic Thermal-Chemical Modification of Cork for Enhanced Interfacial Compatibility in 3D-Printable TPU Composites

Song Chen,Wenxiang Zhai,Kejiao Ding,Wei Zhang,Hao Sun,Zechun Ren,Min Xu

Cork/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites are promising sustainable materials for FDM 3D printing, but poor interfacial compatibility limits cork loading to ~3 wt%. To address this, a green strategy was proposed: cork powder was thermally treated at 300°C (modifying surface polarity and porous structure) and further functionalized with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) to enhance compatibility. Melt-blended composite filaments achieved 10 wt% cork loading: heat treatment alone improved tensile strength by 20% and elongation at break by ~50%, while 6 wt% HDI addition boosted tensile strength by 42% and nearly doubled elongation. This low-cost, bio-based approach enables flexible, high-performance composites, realizing sustainable high-value utilization of natural materials in additive manufacturing.

Ultrathin Flexible CoNi/MXene/CoNi/MXene/TPU Nanocomposite Films for Durable, High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Shielding

Bozhen Wu,Yanghua Song,Zhongpu Shi,Shijie Zhang,Yongkang Meng,Hanghang Zhang,Jintao Yang

With the growing demand for flexible electronic systems, requirements for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are also increasing. These materials must not only be lightweight and deformable but also provide excellent shielding performance. However, traditional shielding materials often face challenges: it is difficult to balance shielding effectiveness, flexibility, and weight. To address these challenges, this study designed a multilayer cobalt–nickel alloy (CoNi)/transition-metal carbide/nitride (MXene)/CoNi/MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanocomposite film employing an “absorption–reflection–reabsorption” electromagnetic attenuation strategy, which was fabricated through processes including electrospinning, vacuum-assisted filtration, and interfacial bonding. Its structure consists of a surface magnetic absorption layer composed of CoNi nanoparticles anchored within electrospun TPU nanofibers; an intermediate magnetoelectric transition layer in which CoNi nanoparticles are grown in situ on two-dimensional MXene nanosheets to form MXene/CoNi nanoheterostructures; and a bottom conductive reflective layer consisting of a continuous MXene nanosheet network deposited on a TPU fiber membrane. The hierarchical nanoheterostructures at each interface enable synergistic magnetic loss, conductive loss, and interfacial polarization loss, yielding an absorption-dominant shielding mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate that the composite film achieves an overall electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of 30.89 dB with an absorption coefficient (A) of 0.56 at an ultrathin thickness of just 0.27 mm, exhibiting a highly efficient shielding mechanism dominated by absorption. The nanorough surface architecture also imparts outstanding hydrophobicity. Durability tests confirm that the film retains EMI SE above the commercial threshold after 15 days of aqueous immersion, 15 days of thermal oxidation at 50 °C, and 200 cyclic tensile deformations, demonstrating acceptable functional durability for practical flexible and wearable electromagnetic shielding applications.

A Microwave-Assisted, Rapidly Self-Healing, FFF-Printed TPU and Its Application in Supercritical Foaming

Shaoyun Chen,Rui Wang,Longhui Zheng,Jianhong Gao,Cuifang Cai,Zixiang Weng,Xiaoying Liu,Bo Qu,Jianlei Wang,Dongxian Zhuo

To mitigate the interlayer defects and weak interfacial adhesion inherent in FFF-printed parts, thereby facilitating subsequent supercritical foaming applications, a microwave-assisted interlayer healing strategy is developed for FFF-printed, supercritical CO2-foamed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) by incorporating aminated helical multi-walled carbon nanotubes (AS-MWCNTs). Owing to their unique helical morphology, AS-MWCNTs exhibit enhanced microwave absorption and localized heating capability, enabling selective thermal activation at interlayer regions within the foamed architecture. Microwave irradiation induces localized softening of the TPU matrix and promotes polymer chain mobility and interdiffusion across layer interfaces, while preserving the cellular morphology and bulk foamed structure. By optimizing AS-MWCNT loading, substantial improvements in interlayer bonding strength, energy absorption, and overall mechanical performance are achieved. This work provides an effective strategy to restore interlayer integrity in supercritical CO2-foamed, additive manufactured elastomers and offers insights into the design of microwave-responsive, self-healing cellular materials.

Preparation and Characterization of TiO2-Reinforced TPU/PDMS Composite Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium Batteries

Rongjian Xue

To further enhance the comprehensive performance of polymer electrolytes, this study prepares a ternary composite gel polymer electrolyte (CGPE) based on TiO 2 /thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) via a solution casting method, systematically investigating the influence of TiO 2 content on the properties of CGPE. Structural characterization reveals that TiO 2 nanoparticles achieve a “dual crystalline phase regulation” mechanism by inhibiting polymer crystallization and introducing anatase crystal phase. When the TiO 2 content is 9 wt%, the CGPE exhibits optimal performance: ionic conductivity reaches 4.59 × 10 −3 S/cm, an 81.5% increase compared to the pure polymer matrix; tensile strength is 9.61 MPa, elongation at break is 449%; lithium ion transference number is 0.78; and the electrochemical stability window is 0–5.0 V versus Li/Li + . The assembled LiFePO 4 /Li half-cell demonstrates a rate capability of 87.4% when the current density increases from 0.1 to 1 C, with 99.2% retention after 100 cycles. The results confirm the application potential of TiO 2 -reinforced CGPE in high-safety lithium-ion batteries.

UV-Resistant and Antierosion TPU Nanocomposite Films for Wind Turbine Blade Protection in Desert Environments

Weirui Zhang,Xiaofeng Cui,Wenjing Ji,Ming Huang,Na Zhang,Liwei Mi,Xianhu Liu

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), with high strength and elasticity, is widely used in wind turbine blade protection. However, it struggles to resist particle erosion and UV aging in desert environments. In this study, UV-327 (A), UV-531 (B), and HALS622 (M) were combined to prepare UV-resistant UV-TPU/NW (ABM) film. The three anti-UV agents cover the main wavelengths, forming a three-dimensional protective network of “UV absorption, free radical scavenging, and cyclic regeneration.” ABM film shows tensile strength 39.71 MPa and elongation 935.48%, comparable to pure TPU (39.52 MPa, 939.58%). After 10 days of UV aging, the color difference (ΔE) and yellowness index (ΔYI) of ABM are 12.88 and 24.25, respectively, significantly lower than those of pure TPU (ΔE = 24.74, ΔYI = 47.69). After 20 days of UV aging, ABM film only has a few fine cracks on the surface, and the tensile strength and elongation at break remain at 31.50 MPa and 868.35%, respectively, much higher than those of pure TPU (17.66 MPa, 706.53%), with a low erosion rate of 1.52% (pure TPU 2.67%). Meanwhile, UV-TPU/(NW@G/C 1.0 ) electrothermal film based on ABM maintains a steady-state temperature of 81.16°C under 11 V after 20 days of aging. This demonstrates its potential for anti-icing applications on wind turbine blades.

SiC whisker/AgNWs/TPU composite film with asymmetric structure for low-reflection electromagnetic interference shielding

Bozhen Wu,Yujing Yu,Peng Wu,Yidong Wu,Jiang Huang,Xuejiao Song

The design and preparation of lightweight and flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites with high efficiency and low reflection are critical to the electronic field. First, silver nanowires (AgNWs) were vacuum filtered on the electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fibrous film. Then, by combining the adhesive with the electrospun silicon carbide nanowhisker (SiCnw) @TPU composite fibrous film, the asymmetric EMI shielding composite films with high electromagnetic shielding efficiency (EMI SE) and low incident power were obtained. The lower AgNWs-TPU layer provides the primary EMI SE, and the upper SiCnw@TPU fibrous film is used for electromagnetic wave absorption. This unique asymmetric structure, the synergistic effect of SiCnw's particular absorbing function and the excellent conductivity of the AgNWs layer make the film show high overall SE (SE T = 55.18 dB). In order to improve the absorption effect of the composite film, the number of layers of SiCnw@TPU was adjusted, resulting in a final reflection coefficient value as low as 0.55. This work proposes a new strategy for developing EMI shielding composite films with high efficiency and low reflection, serving as a reference.

Phosphorus-containing Salen-metal complexes investigated for enhancing the fire safety of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)

Yabin Zhang,Jinfeng Cui,Lurong Wang,He Liu,Baoping Yang,Junhong Guo,Bo Mu,Li Tian

Three novel phosphorus-containing Salen-based derivatives (Salen-DPCP-M: M = Ni, Zn, and Mn), which include both phenyl phosphate structures (DPCP) and Salen-metal complexes, were prepared for enhancing the fire safety of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that Salen-DPCP-M altered the thermal degradation pathways of TPU probably due to the phosphorus-containing structure of Salen-DPCP-M. The cone calorimeter test showed that the addition of 3 wt% of Salen-DPCP-Ni, Salen-DPCP-Zn, and Salen-DPCP-Mn lowered the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) from 1495 kW/m 2 for neat TPU to 690, 875, and 813 kW/m 2 , respectively, for the TPU composites, which demonstrated that Salen-DPCP-M improved the fire safety of TPU. In addition, the release of toxic CO gas from the Salen-DPCP-Ni/TPU and Salen-DPCP-Zn/TPU composites was reduced by 78.2% and 80.0%, respectively. The results of TGA/infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) showed that the incorporation of Salen-DPCP-Ni promoted the release CO 2 , while reducing the formation of harmful gases. Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that Salen-DPCP-Ni/TPU and Salen-DPCP-Zn/TPU composites formed a dense and stable char layer. Herein, the mechanism of these flame retardants containing novel phosphorus-containing Salen-metal complexes is also proposed.

Structure and Dielectric Properties of TPU Composite Filled with CNTs@PDA Nanofibers and MXene Nanosheets

Zhaoxia Luo,Xiaolin Li,Suhe Zhao,Lianghua Xu,Li Liu

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a kind of dielectric elastomer (DE) which can behave as an actuator, altering thickness strain in response to electrical stimulation. The composites are made up of fillers with a very high dielectric constant that are spread in a polymer matrix. It is very difficult to obtain large deformation at low voltage. In this study, we made two-dimensional (2D) MXene nanosheets with excellent conductivity and one-dimensional (1D) polydopamine (PDA)-modified CNT fiber fillers. After that, TPU dielectric elastomer films made of MXene/CNTs or MXene/CNTs@PDA were prepared. The results showed that the dielectric constant and dielectric loss of TPU dielectric film including MXene/CNTs were much higher than that containing MXene/CNTs@PDA, although Young’s modulus and breakdown strength (Eb) were significantly lower. At the same time, these two types of dielectric films had a significantly higher dielectric constant and dielectric loss than pure TPU dielectric film, and their breakdown strength was significantly lower. The compatibility of CNTs@PDA fibers with the TPU matrix improves after PDA modification, and the dispersion of CNTs@PDA fibers improves, resulting in an increase in Young’s modulus. MXene with a two-dimensional nanosheet structure increases the breakdown strength of the TPU dielectric elastomer under the condition of the addition of a tiny quantity. To summarize, the dielectric constant, dielectric loss, Young’s modulus, and dielectric elastomer breakdown strength are mutually restrictive conditions, and the relationship between all parties must be balanced to obtain obvious deformation properties. Keywords:dielectric elastomer;CNTs;PDA;MXene

Preparation and electromagnetic shielding performances of graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites by high-energy ball milling

Dong Wanqiu,He Lin,Chen Chuangqian,Kang Jie,Niu Hongmei,Zhang Jiebing,Li Jin,Li Kanshe

Graphene/polymer nanocomposites have attracted much attention due to their variability and flexibility. In this paper, graphene/polyvinylidene fluoride (graphene/PVDF) and graphene/Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU)–PVDF nanocomposites were successfully prepared by the combined action of viscoelastic matching of polymer and impaction shear field of high-energy ball milling, and the effects of four technological parameters on the exfoliation effect of expanded graphite were investigated. The interlayer exfoliation and graphenization of graphite were realized during the ball milling process. XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, AFM, conductivity test, and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness were used to characterize the structure and performance of the composite. The results show that the graphene thickness in nanocomposites is about 4–7 layers. When the mass fraction of EG is 6%, the conductivity of the composite reaches 0.41 S/m, and the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (EMSE) reaches 15.8 dB. Ball milling together with EG–TPU–PVDF as a grinding agent can effectively realize graphenization of graphite. When the mass fraction of TPU with 44% of hard segment ratio is 10%, graphene thickness in graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites is about 3–5 layers. When the mass fraction of EG is 6%, the electrical conductivity is 1.01 S/m, and the EMSE is 21.4 dB, which shows that the graphene/TPU–PVDF nanocomposites is a typical absorbing type of electromagnetic shielding material.
