Thiram (THI) and asomate (ASO) are frequently detected agrochemicals in food samples due to widespread use as fungicides. However, their detection suffers from matrix interference, or the necessity of derivatization before measurement. Integrating HPLC with a post-column carbon dots (CDs)–enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) system makes it possible to simultaneously separate and selectively detect ASO and THI in fruit samples free of derivatization and deep purification. The studies on mechanisms demonstrated that CD intermediates of anionic radical were responsible for the remarkable CL enhancement of ASO or THI. The CL intensity is directly proportional to the fungicide concentration, with the ranges of linearity for ASO and THI being 5–250 μg·L −1 ( R 2 = 0.9993 ) and 4–200 μg·L −1 ( R 2 = 0.9986 ), respectively, and the corresponding limits of detection (S/N = 3) being 1.61 and 1.33 μg·L −1 , respectively. The developed method enables the exploration of the novelly sulphur-targeted CL application based on carbon nanomaterials.

Ensuring food safety necessitates rapid identification of pesticide residues on fruits. Herein, we developed a shape-adaptable flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, combined with a deep learning algorithm, to quickly detect and quantitatively analyze thiram on fruit surfaces. This SERS substrate was fabricated by depositing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) onto a thin, corrugated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. This innovative design improves physical flexibility, ensuring conformal contact with curved surfaces while achieving high sensitivity, reproducibility, and mechanical robustness. The corrugated Ag NPs@PDMS thin film was able to directly detect thiram at concentrations as low as 10−7 M on tomato and blueberry peels, exhibiting consistent SERS activity with small interference from the fruit's shape. Furthermore, we developed a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) model, trained using a dataset of SERS signals from thiram, for quantitative analysis. The developed model achieved high prediction accuracy, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9905 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.1364. The integration of our flexible SERS substrate, which adapts well to irregular surfaces, with the 1D CNN algorithm for quantitative analysis, holds great potential for rapid thiram detection in fruits.

A simple and highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) method has been developed for the detection of thiram residues in fruit juices. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) @ gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) hydrogel beads as SERS substrates were prepared through ionic crosslinking. The obtained porous CMC @ Au NPs hydrogel bead substrates showed excellent sensitivity for the detection of thiram in apple, grape, and orange juices, with detection limits of 0.001, 0.002, and 0.002 mg/L, respectively. The impact of primary non-target components in juices on SERS detection of thiram was investigated, revealing that the presence of sugars and acids caused varying degrees of interference in SERS measurements. This innovative, practical, and affordable CMC @ Au NPs porous hydrogel bead for thiram detection might be readily expanded to analyze a broad spectrum of other compounds found in food goods at trace amounts.

Thiram, a fungicide used to protect fruits and vegetables from fungal diseases, poses severe health risks due to its residues, so rapid and reliable detection methods are required. Herein, we developed a dual signal sensor based on copper-doped room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) carbon dots (CDs) embedded in a boric acid matrix (Cu-CDs@BA) for detecting thiram in fruits and vegetables. The rigid B 2 O 3 matrix, formed through high-temperature oxidation of boric acid, suppresses non-radiative transitions and oxygen quenching in the carbon dots, stabilizing RTP and enabling simultaneous fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions. Copper ions within the Cu-CDs@BA acted as recognition sites by forming a Cu 2+ -thiram complex. The dual signal quenching mechanism involved photoinduced electron transfer (PET) and inner filter effect (IFE), which concurrently quenched fluorescence and phosphorescence. This dual signal output established an intrinsic self-calibration mechanism, significantly enhancing detection sensitivity by compensating for environmental changes. The sensor exhibits exceptional selectivity for thiram, rapid response (< 5 min), and simplified operation by eliminating the need for exogenous Cu 2+ supplementation. The spiked recovery experiments in real food matrices (banana, carrot) verified the practicality and reliability of the method. This work provided a novel strategy for multi-modal rapid detection of pesticide residues, addressing critical needs in food safety and environmental monitoring. Graphical

Interfacial self-assembly of ordered nanostructures at oil–water interfaces towards the fabrication of nanofilms has attracted the interest of plenty of scientists, since its discovery in 2004. Herein, further developments have been achieved, and we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical nanostructure, through an interfacial synthesis driven microemulsion process. Thus, the synthesis route has been simplified, with the rigorous experimental conditions of traditional compositing technology. Combined with a two-step seed-mediated growth method for preparing uniform Ag-NPs, a plasmonic 3D MoS2-NS@Ag-NP nanostructure was successfully developed as a Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) active substrate, with plenty of surface hot spots, leading to an enhancement factor (EF) of 1.2 × 108 derived from both electromagnetic mechanism (EM) and chemical mechanism (CM) effects. The 3D MoS2-NS@Ag-NP nanostructure can be applied to detect trace thiram in apple juice and local lake water, with a detection limit as low as 10 ppb (42 nM), which is much lower than the maximal residue limit (MRL) of 7 ppm in fruit prescribed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Furthermore, quantitative analysis was achieved in the range of 10 ppb–1 ppm with good homogeneity and selectivity.

Silver-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@AgNPs) were optimized with different gold (Au) core sizes and modified surface with mercaptooctane (MCO) to determine fungicide residues in pear fruit extracts. The developed MCO/Au@AgNPs with a gold core size of 28 nm and silver shell thickness of 6 nm exhibited high sensitivity and significant enhancement of Raman scattering in detecting tricyclazole (TCZ) and thiram fungicides in standard and pear fruit samples. The detection limits for TCZ and thiram in the pear fruit extracts were 0.005 and 0.003 ppm with coefficients of determination of (R 2 ) of 0.9984 and 0.9971, percent recovery ranging from 82.7 to 107.4% and 80.7 to 109.8%, and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.5 to 7.9% and 3.7 to 9.5%, respectively. Results showed that this easily prepared method could be employed as SERS active platforms for the rapid assessment of trace contaminants of agrochemicals in agriculture production.

BACKGROUND Understanding pesticide penetration behavior is important for effective application of pesticides. However, there is a lack of an effective method to monitor pesticide penetration behavior and its changing process. In the present study, a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) mapping method was used for real-time and in situ tracking of the penetration behaviors of thiram and thiram–organosilicon mixture on cabbage leaves. RESULTS The results suggest that thiram has very weak ability to penetrate into cabbage leaves. However, when the thiram–organosilicon mixture was placed on leaf surfaces, a clear thiram signal was detected inside the leaf after 2 h of exposure, a strong signal was observed after 12 h, and the penetration depth of thiram was approximately 200 μm after 48 h. CONCLUSION SERS mapping was demonstrated to be a reliable method for in situ monitoring of organosilicon-induced thiram penetration into cabbage leaf over time. The present study provides a new reference for rationally selecting adjuvants, effectively applying pesticides, and reducing pesticides residue in food. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

By using gold nanorods with silver coating as the sacrificial templates, we prepared spiky yolk-shell AuAg bimetallic nanorods with uniform interior gap via galvanic replacement reaction. The length and number of Au tips of the spiky yolk-shell AuAg nanorods can be tuned simultaneously by altering HAuCl 4 volume. The influence of HAuCl 4 volume and the sliver layer thickness on the SERS activity of spiky yolk-shell AuAg nanorods are studied. When the sliver layer is thin, the interior gap has not been shielded completely and the outer shell has obvious tips, thus the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity has the strongest enhancement with an enhancement factor (EF) of 4.9 × 10 5 . The spiky yolk-shell AuAg nanorods with the strongest SERS activity are used as SERS substrates to detect thiram. The results demonstrate that the SERS intensity increases linearly with the logarithmic concentration of thiram in the range of 10 −3 M to 10 −7 M. The detection limit is as low as 97 nM, which is lower than the maximum pesticide residue limit (29 µM) in fruits stipulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Therefore, the spiky yolk-shell AuAg bimetallic nanorods have important practical application value in pesticide detection.

Substrate materials with high sensitivity and storage stability are crucial for the practical analytical application of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) techniques. In this work, a SERS-active substrate (Si/Au@Ag/ZIF-67) was fabricated with a metal–organic framework (ZIF-67) on a plasmonic surface (Si/Au@Ag) via self-assembly. The as-prepared material combined the properties of the abundant hotspots of the Au@Ag nanoparticles and the excellent adsorption performance of ZIF-67 for organic molecules. The synergy leads to high sensitivity of the composite substrate with a low detection limit for 4-aminothiophenol (a typical Raman reporter molecule) down to 2.0 × 10−9 M and the analytical enhancement factor (AEF) of the SERS substrate is 3.4 × 106. Moreover, the substrates exhibited good repeatability, high reproducibility, and reliable stability due to the MOF coating. The SERS signal was stable after 60 days of storage at room temperature. Ultimately, the optimal Si/Au@Ag/ZIF-67 was applied as a SERS sensor to analyze thiram, and the results showed a linear concentration range from 10−7 to 10−5 M with good linearity (R2 = 0.9934). The recoveries of thiram in spiked apple juice were in the range of 95.7–102.3%, with relative standard deviations less than 4.3%. These results predict that the proposed SERS substrates may hold great potential for the detection of environmental and food pollution in practical applications.

Room temperature phosphorescent carbon dots ( NC CDs@SiO 2 ) were obtained by encapsulating hydrothermally synthesized CDs in a dense Si-O network structure after high-temperature calcination using silica as the matrix. This can avoid the quenching effect of dissolved oxygen in water and has a phosphorescence lifetime of up to 2.41 s. Using the phosphorescence property of NC CDs@SiO 2 , a phosphorescence quenching sensor was developed for the sensitive and selective detection of thiram with the assistance of Cu 2+ . Cu 2+ -thiram complexes led to a rapid phosphorescence quenching of NC CDs@SiO 2 within 30 s through the inner filter effect. The linear range of phosphorescence for thiram was 0.5–100 µM with a detection limit of 0.121 µM. The proposed method was able to detect thiram in real samples and was validated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) confirming the potential of this phosphorescence sensing method for thiram detection. This work opens up a new avenue for the detection of thiram residues in fruits and vegetables and also provides a new idea for the design of a rapid detection platform using other room temperature phosphorescent materials. In response to the prevalent issue of thiram as a common pesticide residue on the surface of fruits and vegetables, our research team employed an acidic hydrated metal salt low co-fusion solvent to dissolve cellulose lysis slurry. Subsequently, a regenerated cellulose membrane (RCM) was successfully prepared via sol-gel method. Uniformly sized Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were deposited on RCM utilizing the continuous ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The resulting Ag NPs/RCM flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates exhibited a minimum detection limit of 5 × 10 −9 M for Rhodamine 6G (R6G), demonstrating good uniformity (RSD = 4.86 %) and reproducibility (RSD = 3.07 %). Moreover, the substrate displayed a remarkable sensitivity of 10 −10 M toward thiram standard solution. Given its inherent flexibility, the substrate proves advantageous for the detection of three-dimensional environments such as fruit and vegetable surfaces, and its practicality has been confirmed in the detection of thiram residue on apples, tomatoes, pears, and other fruits and vegetables.

Thiram is a readily synthesized, cost-effective antimicrobial agent widely used to control diseases in fruits and vegetables. Given the potential health hazards associated with thiram residues and advancements in detection methods, it is crucial to develop a rapid and sensitive technique for detecting these residues on fruit surfaces. Here, we prepared the Ag@filter paper (Ag@FP) surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate in a controlled manner and innovatively developed a capillarity-assisted SERS (CA-SERS) detection method. Sampling can be completed in less than 1 min by either wiping or using the CA-SERS method. Utilizing a portable Raman device, the detection limit for thiram residues on apple surfaces can reach as low as 0.005 ng/cm 2 with the CA-SERS detection method. Furthermore, the substrate is cost-effective, can be prepared in just 7 min, and remains stable at room temperature for up to 40 days. Additionally, we developed a cost-effective, centimeter-scale auxiliary detection device to facilitate efficient on-site detection.
