The regulation and stabilization of the oxidation state to promote the conversion of CO 2 to C 2 fuel still faces many challenges. Based on the principle of charge balance, we creatively propose a co-doping strategy to adjust the surface oxidation state distribution of metallic catalysts . A TiO-based photocatalyst co-doped with Zn and N was synthesized by ammonia assisted one-step calcination method, named ZN-TC. XPS characterization shows that Zn and N adjust the valence states of adjacent Ti elements respectively, so that the surface of TiO maintains a relatively stable Ti 3+ /Ti 2+ ratio. Under visible light irradiation, the material can catalyze CO 2 into CO (324.11 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) and C 2 H 6 (10.27 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ) in the liquid phase . The selectivity of C 2 H 6 reached 14.45%. When irradiated with near-infrared light, ZN-TC shows 100% CO selectivity because the photon energy is not enough to support the catalytic hydrogenation of CO 2 . Theoretical calculations and experiments proved that Zn and N elements mainly act on the B -1 band to regulate the Ti valence state. In-situ DRIFTS and in-situ Raman tests confirmed the function of oxidation state adjustment to promote the C-C coupling on the catalyst surface to produce ethoxy groups , which ultimately led to the production of C 2 H 6 .

A novel Ni2+ and Ti3+ co-doped porous black anatase TiO2 is successfully synthesized by a facile sol–gel technique combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach, followed by mild calcinations (350 °C) in argon atmosphere. The obtained photocatalysts are characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, N2 adsorption, and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the Ni2+ and Ti3+ elements are co-doped into the lattice of anatase TiO2. The prepared Ni2+/Ti3+ co-doped black anatase TiO2 possesses a mesoporous structure, consisting of disordered Ti3+ and oxygen vacancy layers. Based on UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra and valence band analysis, the doped Ni2+ and Ti3+ species can significantly narrow the band gap of anatase TiO2 due to the formation of mid-gap states, which allows utilization of visible-light and prevents fast recombination of photogenerated charges effectively. Furthermore, the prepared co-doped photocatalysts exhibit unprecedented higher photocatalytic activity than that of the pure TiO2 and the Ni2+ doped TiO2. The degradation ratio of methyl orange and rhodamine B is up to 95.38 and 95.86%, respectively, within 150 min irradiation of visible-light by the obtained Ni2+/Ti3+ co-doped porous black anatase TiO2. The high visible-light photocatalytic degradation performance may be ascribed to the efficient doping of Ni2+ and Ti3+ in favor of the absorption of visible-light and the separation of photogenerated charges, and the porous structure facilitating the diffusion of reactants and products.

Photocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3-) to ammonia (NH3) represents a sustainable route for wastewater treatment and chemical production. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) like MIL-125 are promising catalysts, yet their performance often decays during reaction. This study reveals that the aggregation state of Ti3+ sites in MIL-125 is a critical factor governing its photocatalytic efficiency. We demonstrate that the as-synthesized MIL-125, featuring isolated Ti3+ sites, achieves a high NH3 production rate of 738.32 μmol g-1 h-1 under full-spectrum light without sacrificial agents. Comprehensive characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that these isolated Ti3+ sites elevate the material’s conduction band and enhance NO3- adsorption, thereby lowering the energy barrier for the rate-determining step. However, prolonged photoreaction leads to linker deficiency, resulting in agglomeration of Ti3+ sites. This structural evolution causes a negative shift in the conduction band potential, impedes charge separation, and increases the reaction barrier, leading to a noticeable loss in activity over cycles. This work underscores the pivotal role of maintaining isolated metal sites for designing stable and efficient MOF-based photocatalysts for nitrogen cycling.

As a promising high-voltage cathode material candidate for next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), spinel-type LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) has attracted significant attention due to its high operating voltage (~4.7 V). However, its intrinsic structural instability and severe surfacial side reactions lead to poor cycling stability and rate capability. This study presents an innovative low-temperature calcination strategy to synthesize Ti/F co-doped LNMO (LNMO-TiF3-x) cathode materials, utilizing TiF3 as a dual-functional dopant. Both experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the introduced Ti3+/Ti4+ redox couple activates additional Mn-based capacity within the 4.2 V region, while contributing a minor yet measurable reversible capacity. Simultaneously, Ti/F co-doping strengthens the lattice through covalent bonding, effectively suppressing transition metal dissolution and synergistically enhancing cycling stability. Furthermore, Ti4+ doping expands the (111) lattice spacing, which facilitates Li+ diffusion kinetics and significantly enhances rate capabilities. The optimized LNMO-TiF3-4 exhibits outstanding performance, delivering 131.9 mAh g-1 at 10 C and maintaining 72.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 5 C. This work not only demonstrates the high electrochemical performance of LNMO-TiF3-x but also offers new insights into bulk-interface synergistic engineering for advanced high-voltage cathode materials.

Black Ti 3+ self-doping TiO 2 nanotubes (BTNT) have attracted widespread attention due to their abilities to enhance visible light response and photo-generated electron-hole separation without introducing impurity particles. However, due to the poor stability of Ti 3+ , the doping of a large amount of Ti 3+ is a huge challenge. In this work, we have taken a different approach, and the black Ti 3+ self-doping TNT-Ag-WO 3 (BAW) photocatalyst was prepared. The BAW Z-scheme photocatalytic (PC) system was successfully constructed. Compared with TNT's PC system (degrade 40.56%), BAW Z-scheme PC system can degrade 97.67% with 20 mg/L MB wastewater after 120 min. By introducing a large number of Ti 3+ and O vacancies, the inherent active group is mainly converted from the holes and.OH on the WO 3 valence band and.O 2 − on the TiO 2 conduction band , which improved the stability of O vacancies. Before and after the reaction, the reduction of Ti 3+ in BTNT is about 30 times that of Ti 3+ in BAW. This work provides a reference and basis for constructing Z-scheme heterojunction on BTNT, and also provides new ideas for improving the stability of Ti 3+ and O vacancies in self-doped TiO 2 .

Persistent luminescence (PersL) materials have unique long-term separable excitation-emission properties. In this study, intrinsic near-infrared (NIR) PersL of Ti 3+ is found at 760 nm in undoped Na 0·5 Y 0·5 TiO 3 (NYT) after being illuminated to room light or red LED illumination. The low symmetric monoclinic perovskite structure of NYT leads to energy level splitting of Ti 3+ into 2 E 1/2 and 1 E 2/2 , which generates a new PersL excitation peak at ∼650 nm. Direct electron transfer from excited Ti 3+ to oxygen vacancy is verified during the PersL charging process by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy which avoids cross-band transition. Further, double band visible/NIR PersL is realized by introducing Pr 3+ into NYT (Na 0·5 Y 0·5 TiO 3 :Pr, NYT-Pr) at 614 and 760 nm, respectively. By observing the anti-Stokes PersL of Pr in NYT-Pr at 614 nm that is rechargeable at 660 nm, a phonon-assisted charging mechanism is proposed, in which Ti 3+ absorbs excitation and phonon energy to realize electron transfer to oxygen vacancy ( V O ). Based on single band PersL NYT and double band PersL NYT-Pr, triple modal optical information encryption was realized by applying their visible fluorescence/visible PersL/invisible NIR PersL properties, showing different levels of optical information. NYT-Pr integrates traditional visible PersL by naked eyes and invisible NIR PersL imaged by CCD camera together, and will find promising applications in modern optics and bio-optics.

Electrochemical anodic oxidation (AO) is a promising technology for wastewater treatment due to its strong oxidation property and environmental compatibility. However, it suffers from high energy consumption for pollutants removal due to the side-reactions of hydrogen evolution reaction on cathode and oxygen evolution reaction on anode. Combining electro-Fenton (EF) with AO not only generated •OH for pollutants degradation but also increased current efficiency. This work investigated a synergic electrocatalysis process between EF and AO with Ti 3+ self-doped TiO 2 nanotube arrays (Ti 3+ /TNTAs) electrode as both cathode and anode for wastewater treatment. The pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constant of phenol degradation by EF+AO (0.107 min −1 ) was 9.7 or 6.3 times as much as that of only EF (0.011 min −1 ) or AO (0.017 min −1 ) process, respectively. Enhanced pollutants removal of EF+AO could be attributed to the coexistence of •OH oxidation and direct oxidation on Ti 3+ /TNTAs surface. The COD of secondary effluent of coking wastewater decreased from 159.3 mg L −1 to 47.0 mg L −1 by EF+AO within 120 min with low specific energy consumption (9.5 kWh kg −1 COD −1 ). This work provided a new insight into design of the energy-efficient synergic electrocatalysis process for refractory pollutants degradation.

This paper discusses the photocatalytic properties of Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /Ti 3+ -TiO 2 composites. The nanostructured composites were synthesized by gas-phase hydrolysis, precipitation, and photoreduction methods. The photocatalytic performance of the photocatalysts was evaluated by degrading RhB and TC under visible light. The degradation efficiency of AT4 for RhB and TC reached 99.9 % and 78.2 % under visible light irradiation for 20 min and 2.5 min, respectively. The superior performance of AT4 is facilitated by the combined influence of the heterojunction and the SPR . The free radical capture test proved that h + and •O 2 − were the major reactive groups, and in conjunction with UV–vis DRS curves and Mott-Schottky curves, a probable reaction mechanism was proposed.

TiO 2 nanocrystals containing oxygen defects were successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method with reductive sintering in a 5% H 2 + 95% Ar mixed atmosphere. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the prepared samples were all anatase TiO 2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showed that the reductive sintering converted Ti 4+ to Ti 3+ . The Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ molar ratio of the TiO 2 nanocrystals increased with increasing sintering time. The results of the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis showed that the reduced and sintered TiO 2 nanocrystals produced strong signals at g = 2.0010 and 1.9478, corresponding to the presence of oxygen defects and Ti 3+ , respectively. Furthermore, stronger signals were generated with increasing sintering time, indicating a progressively higher concentration of oxygen defects. The TiO 2 nanocrystalswere used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. One sample, H-TiO 2 -5, containing a moderate concentration of oxygen defects, presented a higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient ( D = 5.1 × 10 -13 cm 2 s −1 ) compared to the other TiO 2 samples. This sample had a Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ molar ratio of 0.179 and excellent cycling stability after 100 cycles. The discharge capacity was 124 mAh.g −1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 1C, which means that it has good cyclic stability.

Efficient piezo-photoelectrochemical (Piezo-PEC) water splitting is critical for sustainable hydrogen production, yet its performance is largely constrained by sluggish charge separation and inefficient mechanical-to-electrical energy conversion. Here, we introduce a defect polarization-metal anchoring strategy by selectively anchoring Ni at Ba-vacancy-rich regions of BaTiO 3 to achieve efficient Piezo-PEC water splitting. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Ba vacancies reconstruct the local coordination environment of Ti sites, promoting Ti 3+ formation and TiO 6 octahedral distortion to enhance lattice polarization and the piezoelectric built-in electric field. Ni anchoring further enhances Ti 3d-Ni 3d-O 2p orbital hybridization and Ti─O covalency, forming Ni 2+ /Ti 3+ dual active sites. The enhanced covalency establishes delocalized electron transport pathways to suppress bulk carrier recombination, while the dual active sites accelerate the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) via Ti─O─Ni bridges. The reinforced piezoelectric field synergistically couples with the photogenerated field to promote efficient charge separation. Benefiting from these cooperative effects, the Ni/BTO-Ba V photoanode delivers a photocurrent density of 2.21 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V RHE under ultrasonic-light coupling, with a piezoelectric coefficient (d 33 ) of 65.13 pm V −1 . This work establishes a universal guideline for synergistic modulation of defect polarization and metal sites, guiding the rational design of high-performance photoelectrodes.

Graphical Pass the Mo : A 3 D sandwich of mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT was fabricated using a facile mechanochemistry method combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach. The material exhibited excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for pollutant degradation and hydrogen evolution owing to the sandwich-like heterojunction structure and Ti 3+ doping. A novel 3 D mesoporous black TiO 2 (MBT)/MoS 2 /MBT sandwich-like nanosheet was successfully fabricated using a facile mechanochemical process combined with an in situ solid-state chemical reduction approach, followed by mild calcination (350 °C) under an argon atmosphere. The MBT/MoS 2 /MBT exhibits a 3 D sandwich-like nanosheet structure and heterojunctions are formed at the interfaces between MoS 2 and black TiO 2 . The significantly narrowed band gap of MBT/MoS 2 /MBT is attributed to the introduction of MoS 2 and the formed Ti 3+ species in the frameworks. The visible-light photocatalytic degradation rate of methyl orange and the hydrogen production rate are as high as 89.86 % and 0.56 mmol h −1 g −1 , respectively. The introduction of MoS 2 and Ti 3+ in the frameworks favors the visible-light absorption and the separation of photogenerated charges, and the 3 D sandwich-like heterojunction structure facilitates the transfer of photogenerated charges.

To solve the aggregation problem of TiO 2 nanomaterials and improve the catalytic efficiency, F-doped TiO 2 /exfoliated bentonite (TF/EB) composite was prepared by dispersing F-doped TiO 2 (TF) nanoparticles on an exfoliated bentonite (EB) using a facile sol–gel method. The exfoliated bentonite was prepared by liquid-exfoliation method from the natural bentonite (B). The prepared samples were applied for toluene degradation in gas phase under UV and visible light irradiation. The as-prepared TF/EB composite exhibited higher toluene degradation efficiency than that of pure TiO 2 , F-doped TiO 2 and TF/B composite. Results indicated that the calcination temperature and the initial F/Ti atom ratio of reaction precursors greatly affected the photocatalytic activity towards toluene degradation. The best photocatalytic performance was obtained by the sample calcinated at 400 °C with an initial F/Ti atom ratio of 5%. The improved photocatalytic performance is ascribed to a series of benefits introduced by F-doping and exfoliation process. The presence of F - ions increases the percentage of exposed reactive {0 0 1} facets on TiO 2 . Moreover, F - ions incorporated into the TiO 2 lattice generate oxygen vacancies and Ti 3+ defects, which influence the transfer and migration of the photoinduced charge carriers and induce a visible-light photocatalytic activity . Furthermore, the electrostatic interaction of negatively charged exfoliated bentonite surface leads to a more efficient separation of charge carriers.
