B 4 C–TiB 2 composites with an excellent combination of mechanical properties were consolidated at 1900 ℃ via a combined route of pre‑calcination and hot‑pressing. The effect of TiO 2 content (10 30 wt%) on boron carbide and sintering behavior was investigated. Increasing TiB 2 content accelerated densification, while the concomitant formation of non‑stoichiometric B x C with lattice distortion further enhanced the sintering activity. The pre‑calcination effectively reduced the formation of by‑products and suppressed particle agglomeration prior to sintering. The composite with 26 wt% TiB 2 achieved the best combination of properties: flexural strength of 774 ± 42 MPa, Vickers hardness of 35.1 ± 1.8 GPa, and fracture toughness of 3.17 ± 0.11 MPa·m 1/2 (SEVNB), representing a 58.5% improvement over monolithic B 4 C. Quantitative AFM analysis revealed increasing fracture roughness with TiB 2 content, corroborating enhanced crack‑propagation resistance.

TiB 2 –B 4 C composites were in situ synthesized and consolidated by high pressure synthesis method from a mixture of TiC and B powders at the pressure and temperature of 5.0 GPa and 1500℃-1900℃. The phase composition, microstructure, density, hardness, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistivity of TiB 2 –B 4 C composites were analyzed. As the increase in the synthesis temperature, the products were TiB 2 and B 4 C phases and that crystallinity improved. TiB 2 –B 4 C composites were dense without obvious pores. TiB 2 –B 4 C composites synthesized at 1800℃ obtained the optimized performance, including the relative density of 98.2%, the Vickers hardness of 31.7 ± 1.2 GPa with the load of 9.8 N, the thermal conductivity of 30.3 ± 0.7 W/(m K), and the electrical resistivity of 3.3 × 10 −3 Ω cm, respectively. The grain size of the TiB 2 –B 4 C composites changed with the increase in synthesis temperature, leading to the changes in hardness, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistivity.

TiN–TiB 2 –hBN ceramic composites were prepared using nitride boronisation with TiN–B as the raw material. The bulk samples exhibited layered structures through secondary reactions at higher temperatures. In the outer layer of the bulk sample, hBN was consumed, and the content of the hard phase (TiB 2 ) increased because of the secondary reaction, which increased the hardness of the outer layer to 20.54 GPa, i.e., 68.64% higher than that of the inner layer (12.18 GPa). In addition, the mechanical properties of TiN–TiB 2 –hBN ceramic composites with a layered structure were not adversely affected by the higher sintering temperature: the bulk sample maintained a high bending strength of 477 MPa, and the fracture toughness was improved to 4.02 MPa m 1/2 by twins and stacking dislocations.

This study aims to achieve synergistic strength-ductility enhancement of semi-solid squeeze cast 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites through in-situ particle strengthening and T6 heat treatment. The microstructure and mechanical properties of 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites with different heat treatments were investigated. TiB 2 particles are semi-coherent with α-Al and primary Si, respectively. The nanoscale precipitate phases were determined by their crystal orientation relationships. The results showed that they are θ and θʹ phases. Meanwhile, the research results pertaining to the mechanical properties imply that the strength and ductility are enhanced by the TiB 2 particles and Al 2 Cu precipitates. The optimum heat treatment process (solution treatment for 9 h at 520 °C and aging for 8 h at 170 °C) of strengthened 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites is revealed in this study, when the ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the composites are 263.3 MPa and 0.51%, respectively. The mechanisms governing the enhanced strength and ductility of 6TiB 2 /Al–17Si–4Cu composites were discussed.

TiB 2 coatings can significantly enhance the high-temperature oxidation resistance of molybdenum, which would broaden the application range of molybdenum and alloys thereof. However, traditional methods for preparing TiB 2 coatings have disadvantages such as high equipment costs, complicated processes, and highly toxic gas emissions. This paper proposes an environmentally friendly method, which requires inexpensive equipment and simple processing, for preparing TiB 2 coating on molybdenum via electrophoretic deposition within Na 3 AlF 6 -based molten salts. The produced TiB 2 layer had an approximate thickness of 60 µm and exhibited high density, outstanding hardness (38.2 GPa) and robust adhesion strength (51 N). Additionally, high-temperature oxidation experiments revealed that, at 900°C, the TiB 2 coating provided effective protection to the molybdenum substrate against oxidation for 3 h. This result indicates that the TiB 2 coating prepared on molybdenum using molten salt electrophoretic deposition possesses good high-temperature oxidation resistance.

Silicon/carbon (Si/C) anodes suffer from sluggish electron/ion transport, severe volume expansion, and interfacial instability under fast-charging conditions. Herein, we report a synergistic design integrating two-dimensional titanium diboride nanosheets (TiB 2 NS) and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into Si/C matrices (Si/C-TiB 2 NS). The Si/C-TiB 2 NS can significantly improve Li + transport kinetics with a diffusion coefficient of ∼10 −10 cm 2 s −1 and exhibit suppressed volume expansion (46% lower than the pristine Si/C), enhanced capacitive contribution (up to 91%), and reduced charge-transfer resistance. It can be found that the TiB 2 NS form continuous in-plane conductive networks, rigid stress-buffering skeletons, and promote LiF-rich solid electrolyte interphase formation, while SWCNTs construct 3D conductive bridges to alleviate local stress. Consequently, this anode delivers an initial capacity of 1430 mAh g −1 , retaining 605 and 570 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 3 and 5 A g −1 , respectively. This work provides a versatile strategy to simultaneously regulate electron/ion kinetics, mechanical stability, and interfacial chemistry for high-performance fast-charging Si-based anodes.

A synergistic enhancement in bending strength, hardness, and fracture toughness while maintaining low density in B 4 C ceramics remains a challenge. Herein, we propose to design a simple three-layer symmetrical sandwich-type laminated structure of B 4 C-TiB 2 by imitating the nacre's structure, which effectively minimizes interfacial defects and achieves stronger interfacial bonding via reactive sintering using B 4 C, TiC, and B as starting materials. The simple symmetric design generates residual compressive stress in both outer layers and tensile stress in the middle layer. It has been found that the residual compressive stress can counteract external loads and lead to a remarkable improvement in hardness and bending strength. Furthermore, a rising R-curve behavior is observed in the fracture toughness testing of laminated B 4 C-TiB 2 ceramics, indicating superior resistance to crack propagation. Compared to monolithic ceramics, the as-synthesized laminated B 4 C-TiB 2 ceramic exhibits amazing comprehensive properties with a high hardness of 37.1 ± 0.4 GPa, bending strength of 834.3 ± 62.8 MPa, and fracture toughness of 5.0 MPa·m 1/2 . This work provides precise guidance for the design of impact-resistant ceramics by offering an in-depth understanding of how residual compressive stress affects mechanical properties.

Developing wettable titanium diboride (TiB2) cathodes enables energy-conservation aluminum electrolysis technology with significant carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduction for the sustainability of aluminum industry. However, synthesizing suitable TiB2 cathodes remains challenging. Herein, we propose a promising strategy for in situ synthesis of TiB2-coated cathodes via the oriented assembly of TiB2 nanocrystals (NCs) in high-temperature molten salts. Colloidal TiB2 NCs with an average size of 4.1 nm were synthesized in a molten cryolite-based bath at 1243 K. Under an electric field, they migrated to the cathode surface through oriented attachment crystallization, assembling directly into TiB2 coatings with a thickness of up to hundreds of micrometers. These coatings exhibited fully dense structures with exceptionally low oxygen content (≤90 ppm). The in situ assembled TiB2-coated cathodes demonstrated an extremely low wear rate of 0.09 mm yr–1 during aluminum electrolysis. This technique potentially enables significant reductions in electricity consumption and corresponding CO2-equivalent emissions. Implementation of these TiB2 cathodes for retrofitting existing electrolytic cells, or combining them with inert anodes for carbon-free aluminum electrolysis, represents a viable pathway. Our work resolves the fundamental conflict between aluminum’s essential role in the energy transition and the aluminum electrolysis industry’s high energy consumption and emissions. It demonstrates the groundbreaking application of oriented assembly technology within high-temperature molten salt systems, addressing critical materials preparation challenges in traditional metallurgical processes.

Anode material is critical for zinc electrowinning, and the selection and preparation of electrode materials are a focal point in hydrometallurgical research. In the present work, an Al/TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 /PbO 2 composite anode was fabricated through a combination of plasma spraying and electrodeposition. The morphology and structure of the TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 middle layer and PbO 2 active layer were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Linear sweep voltammetry, Tafel polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to analyze the catalytic activity and corrosion resistance of the composite anode. COMSOL Multiphysics software was used to simulate the electric field distribution of each element in the electrowinning cell. The results demonstrated that a dense and uniform layered structure, along with robust interfacial bonding, was essential for minimizing the interface resistivity and enhancing the corrosion resistance of the Al/TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 matrix. The coating optimized at a current of 630 A exhibited superior conductivity and corrosion resistance, with excellent conductivity and current uniformity reducing the internal transmission resistance. In addition, it was observed that a low current density was not favorable for grain nucleation and deposition, whereas a high current density led to structural looseness and high inner stress. The electrochemical behavior of the Al/TiB 2 -Ti 4 O 7 /PbO 2 composite anode was better than that of the Pb-Ag anode, offering lower cell voltage, higher current efficiency, and lower power consumption under identical zinc electrowinning conditions. The electric field analysis indicated that the composite anode provided a more uniform distribution of electric flux line and current density, more negative cathodic overpotential, and a higher zinc deposition rate than the Pb-Ag anode. This study employs a low-temperature oxidation self-polymerization method to prepare polyaniline-coated titanium diboride (TiB 2 @PANI) composite materials and co-deposited them with the Ni-W-P system to fabricate a Ni-W-P/TiB 2 @PANI composite coating. This coating's microstructural features, mechanical characteristics, and anti-corrosive properties are systematically investigated. Experimental results demonstrate that the addition of TiB 2 @PANI reduced the average coefficient of friction (COF av ) of the composite coating from 0.560 to 0.232, while the impedance (R t ) represented an approximate 20-fold increase over the pristine Ni-W-P matrix. The SEM and XRD results indicate that TiB 2 @PANI effectively inhibits coating corrosion failure and enhances the improved early-stage corrosion resistance of the coating during a 72 h immersion test in a 0.1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 solution at 40°C.

g-C 3 N 4 based heterojunction photocatalysts attract much attention as degradation materials for organic pollutants due to their wide light absorption range and rich photoinduced carriers. Strategies to effectively improve photoelectron separation and transmission have become a research hotspot. Herein, a novel heterojunction TiB 2 -TiO 2 @g-C 3 N 4 photocatalyst with core–shell structure was constructed by in-situ growth of g-C 3 N 4 on the TiB 2 -TiO 2 cores using one-step calcination method. The composite processes a higher photodegradation performance of Rhodamine B (RhB) and 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) compared to the pure g-C 3 N 4 . The results show that the surface of TiB 2 -TiO 2 cores contains numerous ‘TiB 2 bridges’, as photoinduced carriers transport channels, which effectively accelerate photoinduced e - and h + migration. In addition, the g-C 3 N 4 coated on TiB 2 -TiO 2 cores forms a Z-scheme heterojunction, which hinders the recombination of photogenerated charges resulting in a longer electron lifetime. Furthermore, the TiB 2 also could act as acceptors of electrons for the formation of •O 2– . The main active substances for degradation of RhB are •OH, •O 2– and h + . This strategy is applicable to design highly capable heterojunction photocatalysts by constructing fast electronic transmission channels.

TiB 2 reinforced Ti(C,N)-based cermet was produced by the reaction spark plasma sintering of Co, Ni, Ti, C, BN, Mo 2 C, WC, and TaC mixtures. To understand the mechanism of reaction sintering, systematic investigation on the microstructure evolution and displacement variation rule was carried out. In addition, the influence of C/BN molar ratio on the microstructures and performances of cermet was investigated. Except an initially increased pressure, three densification patterns were found. The first method was the Co Ti, Ti Ni, and Ti-BN diffusion reactions, resulting in a shrinkage of 22.06%. The second pattern was the viscous flow and dissolution-reprecipitation, which corresponded to the synthesis of Ti(C,N) and TiB 2 . In this process, the shrinkage ratio was increased by 35.62%. The final densification mainly originated from the viscous flow of metallic binder. It contributed to the transformation of macrovoids into microvoids, and an increased displacement of 30.10%. With the increasing of C/BN ratio, more C atoms diffused into Ti(C,N). Furthermore, core/rim structure-Ti(C,N) and coreless (W,Mo,Ta,Ti)(C,N) were fabricated. However, the microvoids in cermets enhanced. As a result, the hardness and fracture toughness first increased and then decreased. Results from this work are helpful to understand the reaction spark plasma sintering technique, and can enrich the preparation method of cermet.
