The Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers are significantly considered for Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCC) development due to their excellent tensile strength and elastic modulus. However, due to the hydrophobic nature of the fibers, strong fiber-matrix interfacial bonding is still challenging. Mussel-inspired polydopamine coating has gained attention for its ability to preserve the fiber’s tensile strength while also serving as a platform for bi-layer applications. Polymerization through auto-oxidation of dopamine monomer proceeds very slowly, taking 12 to 24 h minimum for an efficient film formation. This study suggests an expeditious and feasible strategy to convert hydrophobic UHMWPE fibers into hydrophilic ones using catalytic polydopamine deposition mechanism. The reaction time was reduced by 75–88% while still achieving the desired surface properties. Following, a nanoclay coating procedure was developed for modified fibers. Water contact angle, SEM-EDX, XPS, and FTIR analysis were conducted, revealing enhanced wettability, varied surface morphology, and the presence of new functional groups in the modified fibers, respectively. The FRCC using coated fibers showed improved mechanical performance under tensile loads in terms of first-cracking strength, ultimate tensile strength, and strain capacity compared to uncoated fibers FRCC. Thus, quick strategies were explored for PDA and nanoclay coated surfaces considering strong fiber-matrix bridging in FRCC.

Ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is the most widely used friction material for artificial joints. Polyethylene debris generated during its use is the main reason behind the aseptic loosening of artificial joints. Improving the wear resistance of UHMWPE and reducing debris generation have been the focus of research in this field. Inspired by the structure of natural cartilage and based on our previous research, we developed a new type of porous UHMWPE-based artificial joint material doped with copper-containing carbon dots (Cu-CDs). In a protein-containing lubricating medium, this material exhibited auto-antifriction properties by absorbing/releasing the lubricating medium and forming a protein film on the tribo-interface. These effects can significantly enhance the wear resistance of UHMWPE. The results showed that spherical Cu-CDs with an average size of 5–6 nm were successfully prepared. The tensile strength of the porous UHMWPE doped with Cu-CDs (Cu-CDs@UHMWPE) (approximately 9.93 MPa) was close to that of natural joint cartilage. Cu-CDs@UHMWPE promoted the adsorption of proteins by the friction interface and formed a protein film that reduced wear. Under the same friction conditions, the wear index of Cu-CDs@UHMWPE was approximately three times lower than that of pure UHMWPE. This study showed that UHMWPE can be imbued with the ability to form protein films to enhance wear resistance, and these findings provide experimental and theoretical evidence for the development of novel biomimetic artificial joint materials.

A type of MXene nanosheets with “organic–inorganic” structure was constructed through chemical reactions of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether on MXene surface to improve the interfacial and mechanical properties of ultrahigh-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber-reinforced epoxy composite. The soft “organic” portion was conducive to good dispersion of epoxy-modified MXene nanosheets (M−MXene) in epoxy resin, whereas the “inorganic” part guaranteed the excellent mechanical performance of M−MXene. Then, M−MXene nanosheets were added into the epoxy matrix or deposited onto the surface of modified UHMWPE fibers to investigate the effect of M−MXene on composites’ properties. Results indicated the introduction of M−MXene could increase friction force and mechanical interlocking, produce excellent wettability with epoxy matrix, and form chemical bonds with the curing agent. Then, reduced stress concentration and complicated crack path were formed due to the unique “organic–inorganic” structure. Compared with UHMWPE/Epoxy, UHMWPE-PAS@M−MXene/Epoxy and UHMWPE-PAS/Epoxy@M−MXene illustrated significant improvements of 39% and 56%, respectively, in tensile strength and 311% and 324%, respectively, in interfacial shear strength (IFSS). Improved mechanical and interfacial properties of UHMWPE-PAS/Epoxy@M−MXene were attributed to the uniform distribution of M−MXene in the epoxy matrix, which generated a longer crack path from fiber to matrix and more crack deflections compared with those of UHMWPE-PAS@M−MXene/Epoxy.

Shielding materials are important guarantees for the reliable operation of nuclear equipment and essential prerequisites for the safe application of nuclear energy. As an essential and most widely used shielding material, improving the high-temperature mechanical properties of PE-based shielding material is of significant importance for the lightweight and integrated design of nuclear shielding material systems. Here, a simple crosslinking method was proposed to control the crosslinking degree and crystallinity to prepare UHMWPE-based shielding materials with excellent high-temperature mechanical properties and irradiation endurance properties. The enhancement mechanisms of mechanical properties, irradiation endurance properties and shielding properties were revealed. Meanwhile, the γ-rays and neutrons shielding properties were studied using Geant4. When the crosslinking degree was 20.62 × 10 −3 g/mol and the crystallinity was 12.13%, UHMPE-based shielding material with optimal overall performance was obtained. Compared with the un-crosslinked control sample, the tensile strength and elongation at break at room temperature, 70 and 90°C were 22.3 MPa (48.90% increased) and 8.43% (154.68% increased), 8.65 MPa (105.46% increased) and 6.35% (154.00% increased), 7.48 MPa (128.75% increased) and 6.2% (89.60% increased), respectively. The vicat softening temperature and maximum thermal deformation temperature were enhance 4.20 and 6.56°C when the crosslinking degree was 27.51 × 10 −3 g/mol and the crystallinity is 10.83%. Our work provided a feasible method to increase the upper temperature limit and broaden the application range of PE-based nuclear shielding materials.

In this work, a new high-performance hybrid material was designed targeting excellent static and dynamic mechanical properties. To achieve this goal, the hybrid constituents, namely the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers and silicon carbide nanoparticles, were respectively, surface modified to graft the proper chemical species in order to maximize the interactions between the reinforcing phases and the epoxy matrix. The adopted grafting procedures were characterized by vibrational and morphological analyses. The generation a fully connected network resulted in consequent ameliorations in the mechanical and thermomechanical properties. Meanwhile, the effect of various amounts of the treated silicon carbide nanoparticles was also investigated. The finding indicated a gradual improvement in the overall mechanical properties up to 5 wt% for which the tensile strength reached its maximum value of about 477 MPa. The same hybrid materials displayed the remarkable storage modulus of 7.7 GPa at 25°C and a glass transition temperature of about 66°C. The synergistic stress transfer between the constituents was further evidenced by a proper investigation of the sample's fractured surfaces. Overall, the study revealed the great advantage of a fully connected network in developing lightweight and high-performance materials for exigent applications.

Support modification is a simple but effective method to promote olefin polymerization catalysts, which is often correlated with enhanced acidity. Here, following this rule, the bimetallic catalyst CrOx/VOx/silica for UHMWPE/HDPE in-reactor blends was modified by alumina, sulfate, and alumina/sulfate. All modified catalysts were promoted notably, with ethylene polymerization activities about twice that of the unmodified one. Similarly, NH3-TPD and FTIR-pyridine confirmed their enhanced acidity. Theoretical studies emphasized the importance of Lewis acidic Al³⁺ site, which induced geometric and electronic rearrangement of the active site, thus reducing steric hindrance and improving LUMO reactivity. Sulfation further strengthened Al³⁺ acidity, exacerbating rearrangement and lowering the insertion barrier. Contrary to expectations, the alumina/sulfate-modified catalyst—with much stronger Brønsted and Lewis acidity—was only moderately promoted. XPS, DRS UV-vis, elemental analysis, and DFT results indicate that, while modification improves metal center electron deficiency and facilitates ethylene insertion, stronger acidity also weakens the anchoring of Cr(VI) and V(V) active precursors and promotes inactive Cr(III) and V(III) species. This effect was more pronounced for the superacidic alumina/sulfate modifier, partially counteracting its promotional effect.

In order to solve the problem of aseptic loosening of artificial joints resulting from the wear particles of artificial joint components in total joint replacement (TJR), we synthesized a new kind of metalo-organic particle (Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS) using spark plasma sintering (SPS) as a filler to enhance the comprehensive performance of UHMWPE. Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS was interfused evenly with UHMWPE particles and cured in a hot press instrument to prepare Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS/UHMWPE composites. FTIR and SEM were carried out to characterize Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS particles. EDS was carried out to characterize Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS/UHMWPE. The micro-structure, hardness, impact strength, tribology and bio-activities of Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS/UHMWPE composite materials were also investigated. The results confirmed the effectiveness of this method. The hardness, impact strength, and tribology of the composites were enhanced by adding homodispersed Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS particles into UHMWPE. In the meantime, Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS/UHMWPE composites could significantly promote the growth of osteoblasts due to the bio-activity of Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS. Furthermore, the addition of Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS particle-fillers into UHMWPE could promote the secretion of OPG from osteoblasts and inhibit the secretion of RANKL from osteoblasts, and thus increase the OPG/RANKL ratio. All the results above showed that Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS/UHMWPE composites with appropriate Sr/Zn-doped CPP/GNS content possessed superior physicochemical performances and bio-properties, and could be considered as promising materials to treat aseptic loosening in total joint replacement.

In this study, HDPE/UHMWPE microporous films were prepared by blending UHMWPE and HDPE with DOP as the diluent via thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) method. Morphological studies showed that the phase separation mode of the mixed systems was hardly changed in the presence of UHMWPE. Both average pore size and porosity of the blend films increased firstly and then decreased with increasing UHMWPE content. When UHMWPE content reached 1.5 wt%, both porosity and average pore size of the film reached their maximum values (with a porosity of 84.8% and an average pore size of 0.79 μm). The addition of UHMWPE was found to not only enhance the thermal stability of the HDPE/UHMWPE blend films, but also greatly reduce their thermal shrinkage rate as well as the closed cell temperature, which made the diaphragms containing UHMWPE have good prospect for the application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).
