Nowadays, electromagnetic (EM) radiation poses severe environmental pollution and harm to civilian and military life. To this end, it is urgent to synthesize high-efficiency microwave absorbers in terms of composition and structural design. Herein, we reported a unique hybrid nanostructure with Co particles embedded in hollow carbon polyhedron by a series of synthetic steps including carbonization and pyrolysis . Further, the nanoporous carbon (NPC) derived from wheat flour is coated onto the surface of Co@C polyhedrons, forming a special hierarchical structure (Co@C@NPC), which demonstrates outstanding microwave absorption properties due to the hierarchical porous structure, enhanced interfacial polarization, conduction loss, multi-reflection and matched impedance. Typically, with a 10 wt% filler content, the maximum R L of Co@C@NPC reaches −57.2 dB at 9.6 GHz and the corresponding effective bandwidth is 5.7 GHz (from 7.5 to 13.2 GHz) with an absorber thickness of 3 mm. Besides, the filler loading of 10 wt% is much lower than other reported bio-derived absorbers. In short, the hybrid zeolitic imidazolate frameworks offer a novel idea for constructing hollow carbon skeletons and introducing biomass carbon as a green, low cost and renewable material that enhances the dielectric loss and the synergistic effect between permittivity and permeability.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) bearing rich accessible Lewis acidic/basic active sites and hierarchical pores are favorable to catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides with high yields of the target product under mild conditions. In this context, a facile etching and regrowth method is developed here to convert unstable leaf-like zinc-based ZIF-L to one kind of bimetallic ZIF (namely, ZnFe-ZIF) with a rough surface, a porous and accessible three-dimensional structure, and abundant Lewis acidic sites. Owing to the high Fe-doping content functioning as rich Lewis acidic sites and the high CO2 adsorbing capability together with the structural advantages to favor the mass diffusion, the yield of target cyclic carbonate can be up to >99% for the cycloaddition of CO2 and epichlorohydrin by ZnFe-ZIF at 6 h under mild conditions (0.1 MPa and 80 °C) with the selectivity of 100%. More importantly, unlike ZIF-L, which is unstable in the reaction system, the synthesized ZnFe-ZIF displays a satisfactory chemical stability without a loss in catalytic activities after five recycling runs as well as good substrate tolerance, making ZnFe-ZIF a potential high-performance catalyst for CO2 conversion.

Biomimetic zinc single-atom nanozymes mimicking natural lactonase were designed. • The nanozyme integrates lactonase, peroxidase, and oxidase-like activities. • Zn-Nx coordination and pore structure govern the multi-enzyme performance. • ZIF-8-Zn-SAC was immobilized onto silicone catheters via an in-situ hydrogel. • The surface exhibits synergistic quorum-quenching and antibiofilm performance. Bacterial biofilms on indwelling medical devices pose a critical challenge due to their intrinsic resistance to antibiotics and host immune defenses. Herein, a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived zinc single-atom nanozyme (ZIF-8-Zn-SAC) was developed as a multifunctional catalytic material for antibacterial and antibiofilm applications. The atomically dispersed Zn-N x active sites in the N-doped carbon framework provide a biomimetic coordination environment resembling the catalytic center of natural lactonase. ZIF-8-Zn-SAC exhibited integrated lactonase-, peroxidase (POD)-, and oxidase (OXD)-like activities. Its lactonase-like activity enabled efficient degradation of N-acyl homoserine lactone signal molecules, thereby disrupting quorum sensing and suppressing Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation. Meanwhile, its POD- and OXD-like activities catalyzed the generation of reactive oxygen species from H 2 O 2 and dissolved O 2 , leading to oxidative bacterial damage. Structure-activity relationship analysis indicated that Zn-N x coordination, nitrogen species, and pore accessibility were associated with the multi-enzymatic catalytic performance. As a proof-of-concept surface engineering demonstration, ZIF-8-Zn-SAC was immobilized onto silicone catheter surfaces through an in-situ hydrogel coating strategy. The resulting nanozyme-functionalized surfaces showed effective inhibition of P. aeruginosa biofilm formation, favorable preliminary in vitro biocompatibility, and retained mechanical stability. This work provides a structure-activity-guided strategy for designing multifunctional nanozymes and highlights their potential for antibiofilm surface engineering on polymeric medical interfaces. Schematic illustration of the design and antibiofilm mechanism of ZIF-8-Zn-SAC nanozymes. ZIFs-derived Zn-N x active sites embedded in an N-doped carbon framework provide biomimetic lactonase-like activity for AHLs degradation and quorum-sensing disruption. Simultaneously, the nanozyme exhibits POD- and OXD-like activities, catalyzing ROS generation from H 2 O 2 and dissolved O 2 to induce oxidative bacterial damage. As a proof-of-concept surface engineering strategy, ZIF-8-Zn-SAC was immobilized onto silicone catheter surfaces via an in-situ hydrogel coating, enabling effective inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation on device-relevant polymeric interfaces. Highly permeable particulate matter (PM), which can carry pathogens and toxin substances, poses a significant public health risk. However, conventional gradient filtration systems still face challenges in capturing sub-micron particles, inactivating microorganisms, and mitigating premature failure of high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Therefore, this work develops a scalable, one-step, online production method to prepare multifunctional primary filter media (ZIFs@ES) by the in-situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) on fibrous substrates. We employ a through-air process, in which hot air induces the melting and reforming of the bicomponent polyolefin (PE/PP) fibers. This process simultaneously triggers the in-situ growth of ZIF crystals on fiber surfaces, establishing a one-step fabrication method that integrates fiber consolidation with functional coating. By integrating ZIFs@ES with a HEPA filter, we design a multifunctional gradient filtration system (ZIFilters), which exhibits a specific surface area of over 200 m 2 g −1 , compared with 2.18 m 2 g −1 for the ES fibrous substrate. It achieves a PM 0.3 filtration efficiency as high as 99.9% and a bactericidal efficacy of over 99.9%, while maintaining good breathability and mechanical strength. Notably, this process enables continuous production at 300 m h −1 with tunable ZIF phases to meet diverse needs. This strategy offers a practical solution for integrating PM capture and microbial inactivation, extending the application of ZIFilters to air purification and personal protection.

Bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting in acidic media is critical for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis of water. We report a synthesis of porous carbon-coated noble metal-based catalysts. We adopt simple annealing strategy involving Ir-doped zeolite imidazole skeleton to obtain IrCo alloys encapsulated by the porous carbon layers and carbon nanotubes , which is a new method for synthesizing IrCo alloy. The amount of Ir loaded in IrCo NPs catalyst is extremely low (only 6.7 wt%) and IrCo NPs exhibit excellent catalytic activity for both HER and OER in acidic environment, to achieve 10 mA cm −2 current density during HER and OER, overpotential of only 23.9 and 270 mV is required for our novel IrCo NPs catalyst. More significantly, IrCo NPs reach 10 mA cm −2 during overall water splitting at a cell voltage of only 1.55 V in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and demonstrated good durability. Thus, it has excellent prospects to be implemented into PEM for water electrolysis.

Construction of high-sensitive analytical platform to monitor organic pollutants in the environment is of significance. Nitrophenol is toxic organic pollutant, causing serious damage to biosphere. Herein, a simple self-assembled method was proposed to design a novel heterostructure (MXene/ ZIF) composed of Nb 2 CT X and Zn-Co-ZIFs derived bimetallic Zn, Co embedded N-doped carbon (Zn-Co-NC) nanocage. The Nb 2 CT X / Zn-Co-NC composite modified electrodes were applied for the electrochemical detection of 4-nitrophenols (4-NP). SEM images revealed that the insertion of Zn-Co-NC can effectively avoid Nb 2 CTx from restacking. EDS and XPS demonstrated the successful synthesis of bimetallic Zn, Co embedded N-doped carbon nanocage. Excellent conductivity and large specific surface area of Nb 2 CTx as well as superior catalytic activity of Zn-Co-NC nanocage enhance the electrochemical performance of Nb 2 CTx/ Zn-Co-NC sensor. Under optimal conditions, the achieved wide linear range was 1 μM to 500 μM. The low detection limit of 0.070 μM with high sensitivity of 4.65 μA μM −1 cm -2 was obtained. Furthermore, the Nb 2 CTx/ Zn-Co-NC sensor holds outstanding selectivity and stability. Therefore, the innovative structure and excellent properties of MXene/ ZIF make them alternative materials for various electrochemical sensors for the detection of other toxic organic pollutants.

In this study, MOF-on-MOF hybrids were successfully synthesized by interfacial growth method using CoZn-ZIF as guest MOF and MIL-101(Fe) as host MOF, and then employed as heterogeneous catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the degradation of dyes. The hybrids exhibited different morphologies depending on the Co/Zn ratios (10/0, 10/2, 10/10, and 2/10), all of which displayed exceptional catalytic performance. Notably, the hybrid with a Co/Zn ratio of 10/2 showed the highest degradation rate of MB, reaching 100 % removal within 3 min with a k obs value of 452.75 Lg −1 min −1 based on the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Through EPR characterization and scavenging experiments, it was determined that the degradation of dyes occurred through a combination of radical (SO 4 •-, •OH)and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) pathways, with 1 O 2 and SO 4 •- playing prominent roles. Various factors such as Co/Zn ratio, catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, initial pH, temperature, and MB solution concentration were systematically investigated to understand their influence on the catalytic performance. Furthermore, the influence of inorganic ions, humic acid (HA), and the reusability and stability of the catalyst was evaluated, demonstrating its potential for practical applications. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the design and application of MOF-based catalysts for environmental remediation processes.

This study proposes a composite consisting of zinc-heteroaromatic chemical framework material and hollow carbon-based material, designed to host hemoglobin. A heme protein-based electrode is developed using the complex with protein entrapment. The competitive coordination of heme protein with carbon-based carrier results in a novel intermediate with distinctive spectrometric and electrochemical features. The interaction between redox protein supporter and heme protein would give birth to the predominant influences the configuration of the cofactor within the protein. The article elucidates the role of the intermediate species in heme protein-induced electrocatalysis. Two simultaneous redox processes occur on the heme protein-based electrode. The intermediate species exhibits the favorable heterogeneous electron transfer dynamics (the normalized rate constant: 4.2 s −1 ). The analysis in the enzyme-involved electro-catalysis suggests that the substrate diffusion dominates the sensing efficiency of the electrochemical sensor.

Arsenic (As) contamination is a global problem that requires innovative remediation, this study successfully synthesized a novel MnFe 2 O 4 -Zn/Co ZIFs@MIL-53(Fe) (MFZM) using a solvent method to remove As(V) from contaminated water. The MFZM exhibited a rhomboidal dodecahedron structure with a high specific surface area of 158.93 m 2 /g, which contributed to its exceptional adsorption performance under both acidic and neutral pH conditions. Notably, the adsorption capacity for As(V) reached approximately 599.90 mg/g at an equilibrium concentration of 500 mg/L, surpassing the performance of several previously reported adsorbents. The kinetic modelling results indicated that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order mechanism, suggesting chemisorption as the dominant process. However, the isotherm studies demonstrate favorable single-layer adsorption, with the Langmuir model providing the best fit for the experimental data. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis revealed that the Fe/Mn/Co on the MFZM surface can hydrolyze and generate Fe/Mn/Co-OH groups under pH conditions ranging from 3 to 7, facilitating the formation of stable coordination complexes with As(V). Furthermore, the MFZM provided abundant positively charged adsorption sites that effectively attracted HAsO 4 2− via electrostatic interactions, leading to efficient As(V) removal. These findings underscore the potential of the MFZM as a promising adsorbent for the effective remediation of As-contaminated wastewater, supporting sustainable environmental management.

Exploiting the theoretical capacity of transition-metal selenide (TMSe) electrodes with improving stability is a challenge in hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs). An in-situ strategy of multidirectional recombination of reasonable/stable hierarchical structure and multiphase synergy is proposed to boost TMSe electrodes to a higher level. Herein, trimetallic layered double hydroxides (CoNiMn-LDH) are in-situ reconstructed with hollow CNFs (carbon–nitrogen frameworks), which can expose numerous active sites and facilitates rapid charge transport. After systematic selenization (time gradient), the valence-rich multiphase (Co, Ni, Mn)-Se@CNFs is regulated and the hierarchical structure is further optimized with reduction of layer spacing for rapid charge transfer and OH – adsorption. The multiphase coordinated electrode demonstrates a high capacity (334.7 mAh g −1 , 1 A g −1 , 6 M KOH) and superior rate capability (277.8 mAh g −1 , 10 A g −1 , 83.0%). Besides, the assembled HSC demonstrates a quite high energy density ((Co, Ni, Mn)-Se@CNFs//Activated carbon, 91.6 Wh kg −1 at 800 W kg −1 ). The ultra-high cycle retention rate (without attenuation, 16,000 cycles) illustrates the excellent stability, which is superior to the HSCs we know that use TMSes. The in-situ strategy with systematic research on structure/phase regulation provides effective ideas for the preparation and application of high-capacity electrodes and high-efficiency HSCs.

The global prevalence of diabetes makes it a significant work to develop flagship sensors in glucose monitoring technology. Particularly, exploring highly active nanocomposites as biomimetic catalysts for the enzymatic reaction of glucose is extremely attractive in non-enzymatic glucose sensing. Herein, nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nano-polyhedron implanted with Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NHCN–Co 3 O 4 ) was introduced as nanozyme for the catalytic oxidation of glucose. NHCN–Co 3 O 4 was synthesized by a two-step redox carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks. Morphology and structure characterizations revealed that NHCN–Co 3 O 4 was a rhombic nano-dodecahedron with hollow N-doped carbon frameworks. In the frameworks, well-defined Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were embedded. With highly porous N-doped graphitization structure and embedded Co 3 O 4 , NHCN–Co 3 O 4 displayed a distinguished biomimetic catalysis towards the direct oxidation of glucose at a low onset potential of 0.30 V. The biomimetic catalysis of glucose oxidation at NHCN–Co 3 O 4 was so efficient that a steady-state current signal could be established within 3 s. By using NHCN–Co 3 O 4 as nanozyme, a brilliant non-enzymatic glucose sensor was developed with a very low detection limit of 0.2 μM and broad detection range from 1.0 μM to 32.0 mM. Besides, NHCN–Co 3 O 4 sensor also displayed an effective anti-interference capability towards the simulated interfering species including small biomolecules, amino acids , and chloride ion . Furthermore, notable repeatability, reproducibility and long-term stability were also presented. Finally, the successful blood sugar detection in human serum strongly manifests the possible real application of NHCN–Co 3 O 4 sensor.

Cost-effective transition metal-carbon-based hybrids have been widely dedicated to water splitting. Herein, a new three dimensional N-enriched holey carbon layers encapsulated bimetallic phosphides (CoNiP@CN) was synthesized by in situ growth, pyrolysis and phosphorization of CoNi mixed zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs)@ZIF-8 films on Ni foam. CoNiP@CN/NF exhibited smaller overpotentials, lower charge transfer resistance and considerable stability for electrocatalysis. The better performance was attributed to the high conductivity of bimetallic phosphides and N-doped porous carbon, the maximum utilization of active sites on 3D conductive substrate and the protection of bimetallic phosphides by N-doped carbon layers. As an integrated high-performance non-noble electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, the CoNiP@CN/NF requires only 1.59 V@30 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution, which is comparable to many other non-noble metal catalysts. This work highlights the construction highly efficient transition metal-carbon-based electrocatalyst derived from well-defined ZIF precursor, promoting the development of low-cost non-noble metal hybrids in energy chemistry.
