Effects of the Etching Process on Infrared Emissivity Properties of Ti3C2Tx MXene: Implications for Infrared Stealth

Jingxuan Cui,Jiao Wu,Le Mi,Aihu Feng,Yang Yu,Yun Yu

Ti3C2Tx MXene is expected to achieve infrared stealth by regulating its thermal radiation properties. In this study, Ti3C2Tx MXene films were prepared by using the acid etching method, and the effects of etchants (HCl/LiF, HF, and NH4HF2) on the film structure as well as the infrared radiation properties were systematically studied. The intercalation process used to exfoliate single/few-layer nanosheets was found to accelerate the oxidation and increase the resistance of MXene. The mechanism behind these effects on emissivity was explained in detail. Based on these findings, the most suitable preparation process for low-emissivity MXene was selected. The resulting Ti3C2Tx film (HL-f), which used HCl/LiF as an etchant for Ti3AlC2, has a high conductivity of 3119 S/cm that reflects numerous infrared waves reaching its surface while exhibiting a low emissivity of only 0.13. The colloidal solution (HL-s) made with HCl/LiF as an etchant was sprayed directly onto a PI substrate as a coating with infrared stealth capabilities, thermal stability, and Joule heating properties, reducing the emissivity from 0.87 to 0.14. This work provides guidance for improving MXene preparation methods and their applications in related fields while demonstrating the great potential of HCl/LiF-etched Ti3C2Tx MXene as a low-emissivity infrared stealth material.

Statically Multiple Colors and Dynamically Infrared Emissivity Modulation Compatible Electrochromic Devices via Simple Fabry–Perot Photonic Structures

Wenhai Sun,Xiang Zhang,Hulin Zhang,Zichen Ren,Mingjun Chen,Yingjun Xiao,Zitong Li,Jianbo Deng,Dukang Yan,Leipeng Zhang,Yao Li

The development of electrochromic devices (ECDs) that can dynamically modulate infrared (IR) emissivity while maintaining a wide color gamut distribution for visible (VIS)-IR compatible spectral manipulation has been a long-standing challenge. Current ECDs are limited by simultaneous changes in IR emissivity and VIS colors when subjected to external potential, restricting their potential applications. This work presents, for the first time, VIS–IR compatible ECDs capable of displaying VIS multicolor and dynamically modulating IR emissivity via a Ge/HfO 2 Fabry–Perot cavity structure. The all-solid-state VIS-IR compatible ECD with the structure of ITO/NiO/Ta 2 O 5 /Li/WO 3 /ITO/Ge/HfO 2 achieves not only emissivity modulation of 0.20 at potentials of −2.5 V and +2.5 V in the wavelength range of 2.5–25 µm, but also, due to the presence of Fabry–Perot cavity, the novelty compatible device structure achieves static multicolor modulation, thus decoupling VIS and IR emissivity modulation. Additionally, a flexible VIS-IR compatible ECD based on polyaniline is also constructed. This novel approach offers a promising possibility for multispectral compatible manipulation, VIS multicolor, and IR signal processing applications.

Chemical-pressure-enhanced Jahn-Teller distortion in (Cu, Cr, Mn)3O4 spinel for high-temperature broadband emissivity

Yan Zheng,Linjing Qiao,Zhongyang Wang,Hao Gong,Boyu Liu,Jiajun Wang,Liping Tong,Zhiyuan Zhao,Xiao Zhou,Tongxiang Fan

Chemical pressure engineering of Jahn-Teller distortion enables broadband high emissivity. • A quantitative Jahn-Teller distortion index ( Q OJT ) is established to correlate structure with emissivity. • Ca 2+ doping (Cu, Cr, Mn) 3 O 4 spinel achieves an emissivity of 0.947 across the 0.4–25 μm range. • Exceptional thermal stability is demonstrated with less than 1.4% degradation at 1673 K. • An 11% enhancement in heating rate is achieved in practical radiative heating tests. Infrared radiation materials with broadband emissivity and high thermal stability are highly desirable for energy saving and thermal management applications. However, achieving high emissivity across the visible to mid-infrared range (0.4–25.0 μm) remains challenging due to the discontinuous absorption mechanisms in ceramics. Herein, a strategy based on promoting Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion is proposed to enhance the broadband emissivity of (Cu, Cr, Mn) 3 O 4 spinel. Substituting Cu 2+ with alkaline-earth ions (Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ ) introduces tunable chemical pressure, which modifies the local electric field and valence state distribution, thereby regulating the JT structural evolution. An octahedral JT structural descriptor ( Q OJT ) is developed to quantitatively compare JT structural evolution among different compositions. The Q OJT values show a positive correlation with broadband emissivity. The optimized JT structural evolution simultaneously enhances electronic transition, carrier and lattice vibration absorption, enabling synergistic regulation of broadband emissivity across the entire 0.4–25.0 μm spectral range. Among the investigated compositions, Ca 2+ -doped (Cu, Cr, Mn) 3 O 4 exhibits a broadband emissivity of 0.947 and maintains excellent stability under a simulated hypersonic environment at 1673 K. In radiative heating test, it achieves a heating rate approximately 11% higher than that of Al 2 O 3 . These findings demonstrate that chemical pressure provides an effective strategy for regulating JT structural evolution and designing broadband thermal radiation ceramics for high temperature applications. Download: Download high-res image (225KB) Download: Download full-size image Chemical-pressure-tuned Jahn-Teller distortion in (Cu, Cr, Mn) 3 O 4 spinel enables broadband high emissivity (0.947, 0.4–25.0 μm) and exceptional thermal stability up to 1673 K. A quantitative octahedral Jahn-Teller distortion index ( Q OJT ) correlates directly with emissivity performance. The optimized material achieves a 11% acceleration in heating rate, demonstrating its potential for high-temperature radiative transfer and thermal management applications.

In-situ amination and polymerization of SiO2 microspheres grants high infrared emissivity for daytime radiative cooling film

Xingcheng Zhu,Xiangqian Fan,Xianming Zhai,Biao Zhang,Ning Li,Lei Liu,Chaorui Xue,Qing Chang,Shengliang Hu

Radiative cooling technology offers a green idea for addressing energy crisis. SiO 2 is widely employed in preparation of radiative cooling films due to its excellent spectral selectivity within the atmospheric window. Based on the functional group matching principle, connecting C-N bonds onto the Si-O-Si framework is beneficial for enhancing the mid-infrared thermal radiation capability. However, achieving robust covalent integration of these functional groups into the Si-O-Si skeleton of silica and establishing chemically cross-linked composite films with polymeric matrices remains a significant challenge. In this study, amino-modified SiO 2 microspheres(NSMs)were synthesized by in-situ amination and incorporated into a polyurethane (PU) prepolymer, followed by in-situ polymerization to prepare the composite film. On the one hand, amino groups grafted in-situ on the NSMs can react covalently with isocyanate groups in PU prepolymer to establish a chemically cross-linked network. On the other hand, urea groups generated during in-situ polymerization facilitate covalent connection of C-N bonds into the Si-O-Si skeleton. Besides, the in-situ reaction promotes homogeneous dispersion of the NSMs within the PU matrix and enhances the mechanical properties of the composite film. As a result, the as-prepared NSMs-PU film demonstrated an average infrared emittance of ∼ 94.8%, yielding an average ambient cooling temperature drop of ∼ 4.20 ℃ under low-intensity natural sunlight irradiation (< 600 W m −2 ). Additionally, the film exhibits excellent mechanical toughness of 16.03 MJ m −3 and its intrinsic hydrophobicity endows self-cleaning functionality. This work offers an in-situ amination and polymerization strategy to contribute to the practical application of daytime radiative cooling.

Adaptive 4D printing of infrared stealth materials based on temperature-responsive emissivity tunability and thermal insulation coupling

Dinghan Wang,Tao Zhang,Siqi Zhang,Yingtao Li,Dan Yu,Wei Wang

Adaptive infrared stealth technology, as an important means of target feature control, has a core contradiction in the synergistic realization of environmental adaptability and structural functionality. 4D printing provides a new paradigm for the realization of structural time-varying response to material intrinsic properties by exploiting the stimulus-responsive properties of shape memory polymers (SMPs). Inspired by the flower petal's blooming structure, a 4D adaptive infrared stealth material PP-N 3 -VO 2 was developed by DLP light-curing printing technology and coating process. PP-N 3 -VO 2 has temperature-responsive 4D dynamic properties (from 3 mm to 8 mm in height). The microscopic porous structure inside the material and the air layer generated by the contraction of the petal morphology contribute to the temperature control (equilibrium temperatures at the surface of the heat source are only 46.1 °C at 100 °C). The surface VO 2 coating reduces the emissivity of the material after reaching the phase transition temperature (from 0.942 to 0.623). It is worth noting that NIPAAM and tungsten-doped 1.5 wt% VO 2 phase transition temperature is close to the response temperature of the contraction morphology. This dual-responsive effect not only produces an air layer to enhance the effect of thermal insulation, but also makes the surface of the infrared emissivity reduction (within 1 min), thus achieving the efficient infrared stealth. Therefore, this intelligent 4D stealth material with responsive temperature adaptation performance is expected to become a potential candidate for emerging intelligent materials in the field of infrared stealth, meeting the needs of high-temperature equipment.

Effect of ZnO on absorptivity and emissivity of corundum-spinel composite ceramics for solar thermal power generation

Jianfeng Wu,Jiaqi Yu,Xiaohong Xu,Yaqiang Shen,Deng Zhang,Lingyun Hu

In solar thermal power generation (STPG) systems, materials with high absorptivity and low emissivity are essential for efficient solar radiation capture and minimal thermal energy loss. This study explores the impact of ZnO on the optical properties of corundum-spinel composite ceramics. A material with high absorptance (92.60%) and low emittance (80.72%) was developed, showing excellent thermal shock resistance. The ZnAl 2 O 4 formed from ZnO and Al 2 O 3 enhances light absorption through electron transitions. Additionally, ZnAl 2 O 4 suppresses grain growth, reducing grain size and increasing phase boundaries, promoting light scattering and extending photon transport paths. These structural changes, along with defect sites, further boost absorptivity. ZnAl 2 O 4 also reduces mid-infrared emissivity, lowering overall infrared radiation. The material's combination of high absorptivity, low emissivity, and thermal stability makes it a strong candidate for STPG applications.

Advanced Multiphysics Camouflage Based on Low-Emissivity Meta-surface Coupled with Wave-Absorbing and Thermal-Insulating Aerogel

Wenqing Hai,Siyi Bi,Lili Yang,Jiatong Wu,Wenlong Huang,Mengting Cui,Xin Zhang,Jing Meng,Chunhui Chen,Huiqi Shao,Guangwei Shao,Jinhua Jiang,Nanliang Chen

The irreconcilable camouflage mechanisms of radar and infrared spectroscopy present substantial challenges to integrating multi-physics field cloaking technology. Although aerogels possess both microwave dissipation and thermal insulation, higher infrared emissivity restrict further amelioration in compatible stealth field. Herein, we propose a bilayer configuration comprised of aramid nanofiber (ANF) aerogel and infrared shielding meta-surface (ISM). The top ISM with low-pass filtering capabilities is engineered to regulate emissivity while remaining transparent to microwaves. While the bottom quaternary ANF aerogels with radar dissipation and thermal insulation are synthesized by multi-scale design strategy and heterogeneous surface engineering. Through theoretical and experimental optimization, the assembled compatible stealth composite achieves a near-perfect absorption in X-band, while the synergy of low emissivity and thermal insulation facilitates concealment in infrared windows. Specifically, the minimum reflection loss (RL) reaches −32.44 dB, effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) expands to 3.69 GHz (8.71–12.40 GHz), and the integration of effective reflection loss value ( ΔH ) increases to 9.92 dB GHz mm −1 . Additionally, low thermal conductivity (0.0288 W (m K) −1 ) and average infrared emissivity (0.23 in 3–5 µm and 0.25 in 8–14 µm) can reduce infrared radiation energy by 68.1%. This research provides a new thought for the design of multispectral camouflage and demonstrates enormous potential in stealth technologies.

Passive radiative cooling ZrO2/graphene composite coating with high emissivity and enhanced thermal conductivity for heat dissipation

Lujia Han,Fengxia Yang,Qing Meng,Xiao Yang,Jiangtao Li

The heat flow density of electronic power devices is increasing, raising concerns about their safe operation, which necessitates high-performance radiative cooling coatings to improve thermal management. This paper presents the preparation of ZrO 2 /graphene composite powders with an encapsulated structure via the combustion reaction of Mg with CO 2 and ZrO 2 using as a diluent. A passive radiative cooling coating with an emissivity of 0.97 was developed using ZrO 2 /graphenet composite powders and silicon fluoride (SiF) resin. At 50 wt% filler content, the thermal conductivity of the coating reached 4.6 W m −1  K −1 , an increase of 27.8% compared to the coating prepared with mechanically mixed ‘ZrO 2 +graphene’ powders. This improvement could be attributed to the ZrO 2 /graphene powders with encapsulated structure forming a phonon transport network in the coating. Heat dissipation tests of coated Al heat sinks demonstrated that the cooling efficiency increased from 8.2% to 15.0% as the thermal conductivity of the coating increased from 3.6 W m −1  K −1 –4.6 W m −1  K −1 . This result indicates that simultaneously achieving high thermal conductivity and high emissivity of the coating could significantly enhance the heat dissipation of the heat sink.

Multi-mechanism synergy study of Ce doped ZnO ceramics towards low infrared emissivity property at high temperatures

Hengjia Zhang,Tengchao Guo,Litao Lin,Bin Quan,Xiaohui Zhu,Xiaogu Huang

High temperature material with low infrared emissivity in 3–5 μm waveband plays a crucial role in the infrared stealth capability of hot-end aircraft components. In this study, 3 mol% Ce doped ZnO ceramic powders were annealed at various temperatures to reduce their infrared emissivity. The effects of the annealing temperature on the lattice structure, microscopic morphology, and elemental valence variation in the ZnO ceramic powders were systematically investigated. Additionally, a conductivity–dielectric–lattice vibration synergy theory was proposed to provide insights about the changes in the infrared emissivity of the ZnO ceramic powders. The infrared emissivity of the sample powder gradually decreased to its lowest value (0.092 at 500 °C) as the annealing temperature increased to 1100 °C, exhibiting a U-shaped curve from room temperature to 800 °C. Furthermore, the obtained powder was used as a filler to prepare a low infrared emissivity coating, which exhibited an infrared emissivity of 0.213 in 3–5 μm waveband at 500 °C. An infrared thermographic analysis of the coating indicated that it significantly suppressed infrared radiation at 500 °C, demonstrating an excellent high temperature infrared stealth performance.

Mechanism of copper doping in cerium(IV) oxidepowder and its effect on 3–5 μm infrared emissivity

Yunjia Hu,Tengchao Guo,Kangsen Peng,Shujuan Tan,Cheng Xu,Jie Deng

In this study, Ce 1−x Cu x O 2−x (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) samples were prepared by hydrothermal method . The structure, microstructure, and elemental composition of the powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, whereas the electrical conductivity , ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy , and infrared emissivity at 3–5 μm were measured as well. Moreover, the effects of Cu 2+ doping concentration on the microstructure, morphology, bandgap, conductivity, and infrared emissivity of Cu-doped CeO 2 powders were systematically studied. The effects of Cu 2+ doping on infrared reflection and absorption in a 3–5 μm band and their mechanisms were explained based on electromagnetic theory, lattice vibration absorption, and free carrier absorption . Our result indicated that the emissivity of 1% Cu-doped powder reached the lowest emissivity of 0.200 at 800 °C. When the doping concentration was above 1%, the curve of infrared emissivity versus temperature exhibited a “U” shape, with the minimum point shifting towards the low-temperature region with the increase of Cu doping amount. This phenomenon was attributed to the different enhancement amplitude of reflectivity and absorbance of CeO 2 powder by Cu 2+ at different temperatures.

Controllable synthesis of ZnO with different morphologies and their morphology-dependent infrared emissivity in high temperature conditions

Tengchao Guo,Guoyue Xu,Shujuan Tan,Zhihong Yang,Honghan Bu,Gang Fang,Haili Hou,Jing Li,Lingyu Pan

Nowadays, the high temperature low infrared emissivity problem has been of increasing significance and attracting more attention owing to the widespread applications for high temperature conditions. One key solution for this problem is to study the mechanism of high temperature low infrared emissivity and then design the materials with low infrared emissivity at elevated temperature. This paper gives an introduction to the infrared emissivity of ZnO powders in 3∼5 μm waveband at elevated temperature with various well-defined morphologies, e.g. needle-, pencil-, flower-, and flat-like. Among these morphologies, flat-like ZnO powders exhibit the lowest infrared emissivity because they have the largest real part of the dielectric function. Additionally, the variation of electrons average scattering time and lattice vibration at various temperature determine the variation tendency of infrared emissivity with temperature.

Preparation of optically active substituted polyacetylene@CdSe quantum dots composites and their application for low infrared emissivity

Bu Xiaohai,Zhou Yuming,Zhang Tao,He Man

Optically active substituted polyacetylene@CdSe quantum dots (SPA@CdSe QDs) nanocomposites were fabricated by grafting helical SPA polymers onto the surface of semiconductor QDs through ester linkage. Optically active SPA polymer derived from chiral amino acids was copolymerized by a rhodium zwitterion catalyst and was evidently proved to adopt a predominately single-handed helical conformation. The SPA@QDs nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicated that the organic SPA matrix exhibited an enhancement in thermal stability after the hybridization with CdSe QDs, while the blended QDs maintained their original crystalline structure during grafting. The infrared emissivity properties of the SPA@QDs nanocomposites at 8–14 μm were further investigated. The data demonstrated that the SPA@QDs-15 composite film possessed an infrared emissivity value of 0.501, which was much lower than pristine SPA and QDs. This might be attributed to the incorporation of optically active helical SPA and semiconductor QDs in a hybrid phase, which had great effect in enhancing their interfacial interactions.
