Converting biomass waste into high-performance adsorbents is crucial for environmental remediation. In this study, a novel nitrogen-doped porous biochar (FRLB-K-N) with an ultra-high specific surface area (3463.87 m 2 /g) was synthesized from furfural residue lignin. FRLB-K-N exhibited an extremely high adsorption capacity (q e ) of 2242 ± 7.8 mg/g for tetracycline (TC). The results indicate that the abundant ordered graphite structure of the lignin-based adsorbent enhances its adsorption capacity for organic pollutants through conjugated aromatic interactions. Following lignin purification, the q e increases by 51 ± 8.9 %. The synergistic effect of melamine and KOH on the etching of the carbon skeleton not only enhances the adsorption capacity, but also optimizes the pore structure of the porous carbon, thereby improving the kinetic performance. The coexisting metal ions inhibit the adsorption of TC on FRLB-K-N by competitively adsorbing and occupying the active sites. The FRLB-K-N exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity for TC across a broad pH range (pH=2–10), attributed to its ultra-high specific surface area, abundant surface oxygen groups (including C O, -OH etc.) and ordered aromatic structure. The adsorption mechanism belongs to monolayer chemisorption, mainly maintained by electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and pore filling to maintain its high adsorption performance in real aqueous environments. Notably, FRLB-K-N exhibits excellent stability and recyclability. Its adsorption capacity remains nearly unchanged after five recycles via simple desorption, indicating its great potential as a robust and recyclable adsorbent for antibiotic removal in practical applications.

This study investigates the catalytic hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural to value-added products, especially tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol and furfuryl alcohol. A series of Ni-Fe-Al composite catalysts were synthesized through co-precipitation and subsequent hydrogen reduction. Among these, the Ni 5 Fe 1 Al 2 catalyst demonstrated extraordinary catalytic performance, achieving complete furfural conversion and 92.9 % tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol selectivity under mild conditions (50 °C, 0.5 MPa H 2 ). Comprehensive characterization using XRD, TEM, and XPS revealed that the optimized Ni 5 Fe 1 Al 2 –400 catalyst possessed high dispersion and abundant oxygen vacancies. The addition of pyridine in the feed had a great impact on the hydrogenation rate of furfuryl alcohol but much less on that of furfural. With pyridine in the feed, the main product shifted from tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol to furfuryl alcohol, while maintaining complete furfural conversion and achieving 97.5 % furfuryl alcohol selectivity at 50 °C. The Ni 5 Fe 1 Al 2 –400 deactivated in the 50-h run and can be regenerated by simple in-situ reduction, demonstrating excellent regenerability. These findings provide valuable insights into the design of efficient catalysts for selective biomass conversion.

Herein, an efficient biphasic pretreatment process was developed to improve the production of furfural (FF) and glucose from Eucalyptus . The influence of formic acid and NaCl on FF production from xylose in water and various biphasic systems was investigated. Results showed that the addition of formic acid and NaCl significantly promoted the FF yield, and the biphasic system of MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone)/water exhibited the best performance for FF production. Then the Eucalyptus was pretreated in the MIBK/water system, and a maximum FF yield of 82.0% was achieved at 180 °C for 60 min. Surface of the pretreated Eucalyptus became relatively rough and loose, and its crystallinity index increased obviously due to the removal of hemicelluloses and lignin. The pretreated Eucalyptus samples showed much higher enzymatic hydrolysis rates (26.2–70.7%) than the raw Eucalyptus (14.5%).

Bimetallic synergy can competently optimize the electronic structure of the active metals and coordinate the interaction between metal components, which is a good strategy to effectively enhance the catalytic performance and stability of monometallic catalysts. Herein, we report a CuNi bimetallic catalyst supported on the mesoporous zirconia prepared via electrospinning technology, which can achieve high catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) performance with excellent cycle stability. The effect of bimetallic synergistic effect on CTH capacity was systematically investigated by precisely regulating Cu/Ni molar ratio. The optimized Cu2Ni1-ZrO2 catalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving 88.9% furfural conversion with 93.6% furfuryl alcohol selectivity in isopropanol under 170℃ for 12 h, accompanied by a notable TOF value of 4.90 h-1. The electron transfer between Cu and Ni promotes the generation of more Cu0/Cu+ active sites, which effectively enhances the CTH activity of the catalyst. Additionally, the Cu2Ni1-ZrO2 catalyst showed stable performance over 6 cycles with negligible activity decay. Finally, the hydrogen transfer path of furfural on the catalyst surface was studied via H isotope labeling mass experiments.

Graphical The solid acid catalysts were triumphantly prepared using the residues of poplar sawdust's enzymatic hydrolysis, which displayed the most acidic sites and high catalytic activity, and achieved the highest furfural yield and furfural selectivity during xylose conversion. The utilization of biomass as a carbon source for the synthesis of renewable solid acid catalysts (SA) has emerged as a prominent research direction in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Based on the challenges associated with reusing residues from lignocellulosic biorefining, the biomass-based SA (BCSA) were prepared using poplar sawdust (PS), hydrothermally pretreated PS (PPS), and the residue of PPS's enzymatic hydrolysis (ER). The characterization revealed that all three types of BCSA were loaded with catalytic groups, and the BCSA synthesized using ER rich in lignin components exhibited a highly efficient catalytic structure. Furthermore, the catalysis of a 20 g/L xylose solution with BCSA-ER as SA also achieved the highest furfural yield (89.3%) and furfural selectivity (90.3%). The findings of this study suggested that lignin holds significant potential as a carbon carrier for SA, thereby offering a viable solution for utilizing by-products from lignocellulosic biorefining.

The green synthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), famous as a bio-based polymer monomer from the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), offers a promising route to reduce the usage of petroleum-based polymer polyethylene terephthalate. Although the electrocatalytic preparation of FDCA rids high temperature and pressure limits, most electrocatalysts used in the HMF oxidation reaction (HMFOR) are usually fabricated in harsh conditions. Therefore, we propose a method to improve the performance of electrocatalysts in the HMFOR reaction by introducing metal salts using natural seawater as the main feedstock. The final Co-sw/NF realized a 97.4% FDCA yield and 97.3% Faraday efficiency (FE). In-situ Raman techniques identified the catalytically active species of the catalysts employed in the HMFOR process. The effect of metal salts on catalyst energy levels is discussed in detail using the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and Tauc plot method. The adsorption performance of HMF on the catalyst was determined by calculating the d-band centers and applying open circuit potential (OCP) tests. Furthermore, we elucidate the specific mechanism in terms of electron transport pathways.

In this study, the structure–activity relationships were investigated in converting biomass-derived furfural into cyclopentanone (CPO) or tetrahydrofuran alcohol (THFA) using a rinsing method to modulate the NiCoAl catalyst. Characterization of two catalysts, NiCoAl (without rinsing) and NiCoAl-R (with rinsing), reveals differences in morphology, composition, and acidity. Rinsing induced a transition from agglomerate to layered structure in NiCoAl-R, which exhibited higher acid strength and improved Lewis to Brønsted acid ratio. NiCoAl-R contained a high percentage of metal oxides, while NiCoAl had a high percentage of metallic species on its surface. These distinctions resulted in varied performance in FFA hydrogenolysis, with NiCoAl-R favoring CPO formation and NiCoAl facilitating THFA production. In situ DRIFTS experiments reveals differing furfural sorption states, and DFT calculations highlighted the higher activity of metal oxides in ring-opening reactions. This investigation elucidates the intricate relationship between catalyst properties and performance, offering insights for tailored catalyst design in biomass conversion.

A direct synthesis strategy was employed to prepare functionalized COFs enriched with acidic sites, using various precursor monomers. The functionalized COFs were applied in the catalytic conversion of biomass-derived xylan to furfural in the liquid phase. The study further assessed the recyclability and reusability of these COFs, explored the relationship between their structural features and catalytic performance, and investigated the reaction mechanism underlying the COF-catalyzed conversion of xylan to furfural. The results revealed the successful solvothermal synthesis of four COFs (COF-LZU1, TP-PA, TB-DAB, and TP-DAB). Among them, TP-DAB exhibited the highest acidity, reaching 2.092 mmol/g, due to its rich content of -OH and -COOH. Additionally, TP-DAB demonstrated a well-developed porous structure and excellent thermal stability, essential characteristics for a highly efficient solid acid catalyst. When employed as a catalyst in a mixed solvent system of H 2 O/THF at 160 °C for 180 min, TP-DAB achieved complete xylan conversion with furfural yield of 63.49 %. Moreover, TP-DAB maintained good stability and reusability, being effective for at least five cycles. This study presents a novel and highly effective green catalyst for the sustainable conversion of biomass-derived sugars into furfural, providing new avenues for the efficient conversion of biomass into fine chemicals.

The development of simple, efficient and economical catalysts for the hydrogenation of biomass to produce high value-added chemicals is of great significance in solving the energy crisis. In this work, a series of non-precious metal catalysts (Cu–Al2O3–ZnO) with different defect sites were prepared by etching Devarda's alloy. Under optimized mild reaction conditions, the furfural conversion and furfuryl alcohol selectivity are both greater than 99.0%, and the catalyst has good reusability. Characterisation and experiments were used to investigate the activate species for hydrogenation reaction. It can be proved that the low-valent Cu species in the Cu–Al2O3–ZnO catalysts play an important role as adsorption and dissociation sites for H2. Different etching degrees and sample reduction temperatures of the alloy can be used to adjust the content of acidic sites such as Al2O3 and CuO, which have appropriate adsorption properties for furfural. ZnO promotes the dispersion of the Cu species and enhances the accessibility of the active sites. The etching method achieves the interaction between species to further enhance the stability and activity of the catalyst. The catalytic performance of the catalyst is very competitive and this study provides a new method for the efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol.

Mainstream phase change material (PCM) for the thermal management of battery modules has been suffering from the leakage issue due to the weak capillary condensation from its micron-scaled polymer framework. Therefore, in this work, we design a high-stable and leakage-proof composite PCM (CPCM) by in-situ constructing a nano-scaled resorcinol-furfural polymer framework (RF-PF) in PCM via a one-pot strategy. Compared to classical micron-scaled framework of epoxy resin, the nano-scaled RF-PF stacks into a three-dimensionally mesoporous structure, and thus provides a much more intensive adsorbability towards PCM to prevent leakage. The mass retention rate of the RF-PF-based CPCM (RF-CPCM) during the leakage tests is up to 99.84 wt%. Combining with the suitable thermo-physical properties including a phase change enthalpy of 107.18 J g −1 , phase change temperature region of 40– ∼ 55 °C and thermal conductivity of 1.58 W m −1 K −1 , the RF-CPCM demonstrates effective and stable thermal management performances towards the pouch and cylindrical battery modules. For example, the temperature of the pouch battery module can be controlled below 41.15, 44.16 and 46.82 °C during 0.5-C, 1-C and 2-C discharges, respectively. During the accelerated aging test, the leakage trace appearing on the traditional CPCM module, is effectively overcome in the RF-CPCM module.

Cyclopentanone (CPO) and cyclopentanol (CPL), derived from renewable biomass resource hemicellulose, are considered sustainable chemicals that can substitute fossil-based products, which could be obtained through the hydrogenation-rearrangement reaction of furfural (FFA). However, the inevitable condensation reactions of FFA and furfuryl alcohol (FA) in aqueous solutions generate humins and result in carbon loss, limiting the industrial application of this process. Herein, a series of Cu-based catalysts were synthesized using the reverse co-precipitation method with various metal promoters and applied in the FFA hydrogenation-rearrangement reaction. The highest yield of 97.1% CPO/CPL achieved in a typical reaction condition at 200 °C, 4 MPa, in 20 wt% isopropanol-water mixed solvent over CuZnZr catalyst and the recyclability test confirmed that the catalyst had excellent stability. Experimental studies and characterizations showed that the enhanced performance could be attributed to the adequate Lewis acid sites, regulated through the synergistic interaction between Cu, Zn, and Zr compounds. The simultaneous introduction of Zn and Zr promotes the Cu reduction, and results in more dispersed Cu0 and Cu+, providing an ample and reliable active site. This study outlines a viable method for the catalyst designing and valorizing biomass into high-value-added products.

2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid is an important biomonomer for the synthesis of polyesters, and studies on the synthesis of FDCA mainly focus on the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furoic acid routes. The synthetic route starting from furfural has a broader and more economical raw material source than the furoic acid route. In this study, the furfural route was used to develop an energy-efficient and one-pot method for synthesizing FDCA from furfural and CO2 as raw materials. Under solvent-free conditions, the Co–N–C catalyst and CsOH·H2O were used as catalyst and base, respectively. Pure furfural was converted to cesium furoate (with a yield of 93%) by mechanical ball-milling. Then, without the need for separation and purification, CsOH·H2O was in situ-transformed into Cs2CO3 at 260 °C under a flowing CO2 atmosphere, thereby facilitating the carboxylation of furoate to cesium 2,5-furandicarboxylate. The dynamic experiments and Matlab data fitting revealed that it followed the iterative steps of rapid disproportionation (k1 = 7.53) and slow furfuryl alcohol oxidation (k2 = 0.13). Single Co sites improved atomic utilization without using any solvent, yielding a fast formation rate of furoic acid (21.6 molFA molmetal–1 h–1). The renewable biomass furfural and greenhouse gas CO2 were comprehensively utilized to form a biobased polyester monomer FDCA via a green and simple strategy.
