Shape memory and molecularly imprinted porous polyvinyl alcohol composite membrane to detect glyphosate in water

Wen Xin,Yajun Ren,Xiaofeng Song,Honghui Teng,Na Tian,Xiyue Wang,Junfu Wang

To develop portable materials for rapid pollutant detection, a high-porosity, good shape-memory, and molecularly imprinted composite membranes were prepared by combination of synthetic polymer (P-P-PAA), molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The addition of P-P-PAA enhanced the porosity of the porous P-P-PAA/PVA membrane from 84.96 % to 98.41 %, which arrived at the highest, and the mechanical properties were improved to 1.65 MPa and 154.9 %. The membrane achieved shape recovery within 20 s via the external water stimuli. Compared to the imprinted PVA, the imprinted composite membrane enhanced detectability and speed for Glyphosate (GLY) which reached 50 mg/g within 30 min. Overall, this work successfully developed a shape-memory porous imprinting membrane, which not only offers a new strategy for enhancing detection efficiency but also promotes the advancement of smart membrane materials for on-site water quality monitoring.

Synergistic Adsorption of Glyphosate and Calcium on Ferrihydrite: Molecular Insights into Herbicide Fate in Soils

Mengqi Zhang,Wei Zhao,Xuewen Li,Hongju Ma,Xionghan Feng,Peng Cai,Wenfeng Tan,Xiaoming Wang

Glyphosate and calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) commonly coexist in calcareous soils and aquatic environments, where their interfacial interactions with Fe (oxyhydr)oxide critically influence the environmental fate of glyphosate. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying their co-adsorption on mineral surfaces remain poorly understood. Here, we combined batch adsorption experiments, zeta potential analysis, in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, P K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and surface complexation modeling to investigate the co-adsorption behavior of glyphosate and Ca 2+ on ferrihydrite and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms. The results demonstrated a synergistic co-adsorption of glyphosate and Ca 2+ on ferrihydrite across a wide range of glyphosate concentrations (0.0-2.0 mM) and pH values (4.0-10.0), which was driven by both electrostatic interactions and the formation of ternary surface complexes. Compared with the Ca 2+ -free system at pH 5.0 in the presence of 2.0 mM glyphosate, the addition of 1.0 mM Ca 2+ increased glyphosate adsorption by approximately 20%. At pH 5.0, the Ca 2+ -induced enhancement in glyphosate adsorption followed a glyphosate/Ca 2+ stoichiometric ratio of approximately 1.5. Spectroscopic, electrochemical, and modeling analyses further revealed that, at pH 5.0, glyphosate was predominantly adsorbed on ferrihydrite via bidentate and monodentate phosphonate-mediated Fe-O-P inner-sphere complexes, whereas Ca 2+ simultaneously coordinated with the phosphonate and carboxyl groups of one glyphosate molecule, thereby forming glyphosate-bridged ternary complexes. These findings provide direct molecular-level evidence for the interfacial configuration and cooperative adsorption of glyphosate and Ca 2+ on ferrihydrite, offering mechanistic insights into glyphosate retention, mobility, and environmental behavior in Fe- and Ca-rich soils.

A fluorescence ionic probe utilizing Cu2+ assisted competition for detecting glyphosate abused in green tea

Siying Che,Yiwan Zhuge,Xinxiang Shao,Xiutan Peng,Haiyan Fu,Yuanbin She

Food fraud caused by the violation of glyphosate use in tea is frequently exposed, posing a potential health risk to consumers and undermining trust in food safety. In the work, an ionic fluorescent probe “[P 66614 ] [4HQCA]-Cu 2+ ( PHQCA-Cu 2+ )” was constructed using Cu 2+ and ionic liquids coordination through a competitive coordination strategy to detect glyphosate. This probe exhibited a prominent “turn-on” fluorescence response in glyphosate detection. PHQCA-Cu 2+   was destroyed by glyphosate with its strong coordination capability, and a new complex re-formed simultaneously between glyphosate and the Cu 2+ in it, where Cu 2+ served as an “invisible indicator” influencing fluorescence changes. Remarkably, PHQCA-Cu 2+   formed rapidly within 5 s, demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and selectivity, and satisfactory detection performance on paper strips impregnated with   PHQCA-Cu 2+ .   Importantly,   PHQCA-Cu 2+   showed excellent recoveries in various green tea, which offered a viable method for identifying contaminated products from the supply chain quickly to enhance overall food safety surveillance.

Complete and rapid degradation of glyphosate with Fe3Ce1Ox catalyst for peroxymonosulfate activation at room temperature

Lingxiao Xue,Lijing Hao,Hui Ding,Rui Liu,Dan Zhao,Jianfeng Fu,Mengling Zhang

Glyphosate , a common broad-spectrum herbicide, is a serious environmental pollutant that causes a significant threat to humans. Hence, there is a pressing task to remove glyphosate from the environment. Here, we report an excellent Fe 3 Ce 1 O x catalyst synthesized via the one-step co-precipitation method for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade glyphosate at 25 °C. As a result, glyphosate is completely degraded with a high degradation rate of 400 mg L −1 ·h −1 , and the TOC and TN removals are 85.6% and 80.8%, respectively. As proven by systematic characterizations, the Fe–Ce synergistic effect plays a significant role in promoting PMS activation . The main reactive oxygen species for glyphosate oxidation are surface-bound SO 4 − · and ·OH, produced by activating PMS by electron transfer between Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ and Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ of Fe 3 Ce 1 O x . In light of the products determined, the possible degradation process of glyphosate is also speculated: C–N and C–P bonds of glyphosate molecules are attacked to form aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and orthophosphate (PO 4 3− ) by surface-bound SO 4 − · and ·OH that continuously mineralize and dephosphorylate AMPA to generate small molecules and inorganic ions, such as H 2 O and PO 4 3− . The results of this work suggest that Fe 3 Ce 1 O x /PMS could provide a potential candidate for efficiently removing organic compounds containing nitrogen or phosphorus from wastewater.

Colorimetric Sensing of Glyphosate in Environmental Water Based on Peroxidase Mimetic Activity of MoS2 Nanosheets

Chen Qingai,Chen Huan,Li Zhihong,Pang Jie,Lin Tianran,Guo Liangqia,Fu FengFu

Glyphosate was found for the first time to inhibit the catalytic activity of MoS2 nanosheets, which could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine by H2O2 to produce a colorimetric reaction. In the presence of glyphosate, the absorbance and blue color of the system was decreased. Therefore, a simple and sensitive colorimetric sensing method for glyphosate based on the peroxidase mimetic activity of MoS2 nanosheets was developed. A linear relationship between the absorbance change and concentration of glyphosate was observed over the range of 0.4—2.0 μg/mL (R 2 = 0.993) with a detection limit (3Ω/S) of 0.087 μg/mL. The colorimetric sensing method was simple, rapid, specific and sensitive, and the detection limit of 0.087 μg/mL is lower than the maximum contaminant level of glyphosate in drinking water set by the Environment Protection Agency of USA and World Health Organization. This method was applied to detect glyphosate in environmental water samples with satisfactory results.

An enzyme-assisted electrochemiluminescent biosensor developed on order mesoporous carbons substrate for ultrasensitive glyphosate sensing

Qingrong Zhang,Guifang Xu,Lingshan Gong,Hong Dai,Shupei Zhang,Yilin Li,Yanyu Lin

In this paper, a strategy of developing a late-model and sensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for glyphosate detection based on enzyme-assisted in situ generation of ZnS quantum dots (QDs) on ordered mesoporous carbons (OMC) substrate was proposed. OMC, as a typically ordered mesoporous carbon material, not only provides a protective microenvironment for enzyme to retain its structure and activity but also has a synergistic effect with chitosan for the absorption of Zn 2+ ions by virtue of its high surface area and high pore volume and thus employed as the matrix of proposed biosensor. Then horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was introduced to expedite the generation of ZnS QDs via accelerating the reduction of Na 2 S 2 O 3 with H 2 O 2 to yield H 2 S that reacted with Zn 2+ ions. Glyphosate, as a kind of organic pesticide with amine, carboxyl and phosphonate group which would coordinate strongly to metal ions , possessed the potential to inhibited the activity of HRP, because HRP contain iron (III) protoporphyrin IX (ferriprotoporphyrin IX) as the prosthetic group which would react with the amine, carboxyl and phosphonate group of glyphosate. Accordingly, the proposed ECL QDs biosensor was employed to determine the Gly and shown a wide linear range from 0.1   nM to 10   mM with excellent sensitivity, reproducibility and selectivity . Further, the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) and the Michaelis–Menten constant were studied, and all the results indicated that the proposed strategy is practicable and provide a new opportunity to develop novel ECL sensing platforms in various applications.

The construction of a CND/Cu2+ fluorescence sensing system for the ultrasensitive detection of glyphosate

Xianfeng Wang,Mina Sakinati,Yixia Yang,Yi Ma,Mei Yang,Huibo Luo,Changjun Hou,Danqun Huo

In this work, a coumarin derivative (CND) was synthesized by a one-step condensation reaction and exhibited selective fluorescence quenching by Cu2+. Glyphosate with amine and carboxylate groups provided strong chelation for Cu2+ from the CND/Cu2+ system, leading to fluorescence recovery. In this strategy, a CND/Cu2+ fluorescence sensing system was constructed to achieve the quantitative analysis of glyphosate. Under the optimized experimental conditions, a good linear relationship between CND and Cu2+ of glyphosate concentration in the range from 0.02 μg mL−1 to 1.50 μg mL−1 was obtained and the correlation coefficient was 0.99. The detection limit was calculated to be 18.30 ng mL−1 (S/N = 3) and presented relative advantages compared with other methods. The interference study exhibited excellent selectivity towards glyphosate. In addition, satisfactory recoveries ranging from 91.31% to 105.28% were achieved for the real samples. These results indicate that the CND/Cu2+ fluorescence sensing system has practical application prospects.

Fluorine-doped BiVO4 photocatalyst: Preferential cleavage of C−N bond for green degradation of glyphosate

Yunlong Chen,Yingping Huang,Hailin Tian,Liqun Ye,Ruiping Li,Chuncheng Chen,Zhongxu Dai,Di Huang

With increasing concerns on the environment and human health, the degradation of glyphosate through the formation of less toxic intermediates is of great importance. Among the developed methods for the degradation of glyphosate, photodegradation is a clean and efficient strategy. In this work, we report a new photocatalyst by doping F ion on BiVO 4 that can efficiently degrade glyphosate and reduce the toxic emissions of aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) through the selective (P)−C−N cleavage in comparison of BiVO 4 catalyst. The results demonstrate that the best suppression of AMPA formation was achieved by the catalyst of 0.3F@BiVO 4 at pH = 9 (AMPA formation below 10%). In situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transforms infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicates that the adsorption sites of glyphosate on BiVO 4 and 0.3F@BiVO 4 are altered due to the difference in electrostatic interactions. Such an absorption alteration leads to the preferential cleavage of the C−N bond on the N−C−P skeleton, thereby inhibiting the formation of toxic AMPA. These results improve our understanding of the photodegradation process of glyphosate catalyzed by BiVO 4 -based catalysts and pave a safe way for abiotic degradation of glyphosate.

A Novel and Sensitive Fluorescent Probe for Glyphosate Detection Based on Cu2+ Modulated Polydihydroxyphenylalanine Nanoparticles

Xiqiong Mu,Jian Xu,Fankui Zeng

A novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+-modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of glyphosate pesticides. Compared to conventional instrumental analysis techniques, fluorometric methods have obtained good results in the field of agricultural residue detection. However, most of the fluorescent chemosensors reported still have some limitations, such as long response times, the high limit of detection, and complex synthetic procedures. In this paper, a novel and sensitive fluorescent probe based on Cu2+modulated polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles (PDOAs) has been developed for the detection of glyphosate pesticides. The fluorescence of PDOAs can be effectively quenched by Cu2+through the dynamic quenching process, which was confirmed by the time-resolved fluorescence lifetime analysis. In the presence of glyphosate, the fluorescence of the PDOAs-Cu2+system can be effectively recovered due to the higher affinity of glyphosate for Cu2+, and thus released the individual PDOAs. Due to the admirable properties such as high selectivity to glyphosate pesticide, “turn on” fluorescence response, and ultralow detection limit of 1.8 nM, the proposed method has been successfully applied for the determination of glyphosate in environmental water samples. Keywords:pesticide residues;fluorescent probe;polydihydroxyphenylalanine nanoparticles;Cu2+ion;static quenching;glyphosate

Synthesis and application of purine-based fluorescence probe for continuous recognition of Cu2+ and glyphosate

Xu Chen,Yanxia Mao,Anguan Wang,Linchuan Lu,Qi Shao,Chunhui Jiang,Hongfei Lu

In this study, a novel fluorescent sensor, N,N -dimethyl-4-((2-(8-m-ethyl-9-(naphthalen-1-yl)-9H-purin-6-yl)hydrazineylidene)methyl)aniline( PHA ), which was constructed via Schiff base reaction of purine derivatives and dimethylaminobenzaldehyde. This probe showed significant selective fluorescence quenching of Cu 2+ , and accompanying with an increase in Cu 2+ concentration and a change in solution color from colorless to yellow. The outstanding features of PHA include low detection limit (0.429 μM), strong anti-interference ability and fast response time. We further investigated the chelation mechanism of PHA and Cu 2+ by Job's plot experiment, density generalization theory (DFT), and the probe PHA can form a 1:2 complex with Cu 2+ ions, leading to a fluorescence quenching process, thus realizing the rapid detection of Cu 2+ . In addition, this new fluorescent sensor [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] can be used to detect pesticide residues in solution. When the [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] system was mixed with glyphosate solution, that a fluorescence recovering was observed. This may be because glyphosate chelates more strongly with Cu 2+ ions, making the copper ions dissociated from the [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] system. The detection limit of the fluorescent sensor [ PHA-Cu 2+ ] for glyphosate was 18.77 nM. Finally, the sensor system has been successfully applied in fluorescence imaging of glyphosate in living cells.

Bimetallic PdCu anchored to 3D flower-like carbon material for portable and efficient detection of glyphosate

Yuhong Li,Yujun Cheng,Yutian Huang,Pengcheng Zhao,Junjie Fei,Yixi Xie

Glyphosate (Gly), as a widely used broad-spectrum herbicide, may lead to soil and water pollution due to its persistence in the environment. Herein, the co-reduction method was employed to anchor bimetallic PdCu onto the Ni and nitrogen-doped 3D Flower-like Carbon Materials (Ni@NC), creating a composite material (PdCu/Ni@NC) with high specific surface area and good catalytic performance. This composite was used to modify screen-printed electrodes (SPE) to develop a portable and efficient Gly detection platform. In the presence of Cl⁻, the copper active sites convert to CuCl, achieving signal amplification. Upon the addition of Gly, a competitive reaction between Cu and Gly converts CuCl into a Cu-Gly complex, resulting in a sharp decrease in the electrochemical signal. This signal drop is used to detect Gly. The bimetallic PdCu nanoparticles (NPs) endowed the sensing platform with better stability and electrochemical performance due to their synergistic effect, and their stability was simply verified by Density functional theory (DFT). The sensor demonstrates a linear detection range spanning from 1 × 10⁻¹ ³ to 1 × 10⁻⁵ M, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.72 × 10⁻¹ ⁴ M. The sensor demonstrated a recovery rate of 95.9 % to 104.5 % in actual samples such as water and soil, indicating its potential for practical application.

Selective photo-Fenton degradation of glyphosate using Schiff base metal complexes: Insights into metal-mediated pathways

Danyi Chen,Rongrong Zhao,Honglin Liu,Hailin Tian,Yiqun Tian,Di Huang,David Johnson,Yingping Huang

Developing efficient strategies for glyphosate (PMG) degradation while minimizing the formation of the toxic intermediate, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), is crucial for environmental remediation. In this study, two Schiff base metal complexes, Fe-SPA and Cu-SPA (SPA: salicylaldehyde o-phenylenediamine), were prepared and evaluated for their catalytic activity in activating H 2 O 2 under visible light irradiation (Vis, λ ≥ 420 nm) to degrade PMG. The Fe-SPA/H 2 O 2 (Vis) system achieved 99.9% degradation of 200 μmol/L PMG within 2 h, while the Cu-SPA/H 2 O 2 (Vis) system achieved complete degradation within 5 h. Interestingly, the Fe-SPA/H 2 O 2 (Vis) system selectively catalyzed PMG degradation via an environmentally friendly pathway, producing glycine as the final product. While in the Cu-SPA/H 2 O 2 (Vis) system, in addition to glycine, initially produced toxic AMPA, which was subsequently mineralized into non-toxic inorganic products. These differences in degradation pathways could be attributed to the preferential adsorption behavior of PMG and H 2 O 2 on the M-SPA complexes. Specifically, Fe-SPA selectively adsorbed the phosphate group of PMG, facilitating the C−P bond cleavage. Conversely, Cu-SPA preferentially adsorbed H 2 O 2 , resulting in a nonselective PMG degradation. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and photogenerated holes (h⁺) were identified as the dominant reactive species in both systems. Fe-SPA exhibited excellent stability and maintained high catalytic performance across a wide pH range (3–10) and after five cycles of use. These findings highlighted the pivotal role of the central metal in determining pollutant degradation pathways. This study offers a promising strategy for efficient and environmentally safe PMG remediation.
