Mechanochemical interconversion between discrete complexes and coordination networks – formal hydration/dehydration by LAG

Pipi Wang,Guanjun Li,Yiping Chen,Shangwen Chen,Stuart L. James,Wenbing Yuan

Using a small planetary ball mill, liquid-assisted grinding (LAG) of metal salts or oxides (ZnO, CdO, CdCO3, Cu(OAc)2·H2O, Co(OAc)2·4H2O, Mn(OAc)2·4H2O, Ni(OAc)2·4H2O, FeSO4·7H2O) with two equivalents of isonicotinic acid (HINA) and small amounts of water (up to 5.6 molar equivalents) gave discrete aquo complexes trans-[M(INA)2(OH2)4] (M = Zn, Cd, Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn) efficiently within 30 min. For M = Zn, Cd and Cu these complexes readily undergo reversible formal dehydration to the extended network structures [M(INA)2] (M = Zn, Cu) or [Cd(INA)2(OH2)]·DMF by further LAG with non-aqueous liquids such as methanol or DMF. Overall, the mechanochemical dehydrations are more effective than heating or immersion in bulk solvents. The work demonstrates a two-step mechanochemical synthesis of coordination networks via discrete aquo complexes which may be preferable to single step reactions or grinding-annealing procedures in some cases. For example, the two step method was the only way to prepare [Cd(INA)2(OH2)]·DMF mechanochemically and the porous network Cu(INA)2 could not be obtained from the aquo complex by heating.

Effect of hydration on microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of CaSmAlO4-based ceramics

Feng Hengheng,Jing Haofeng,Yu Tao,Yu Hongtao

Ca 1.15 Sm 0.85 Al 0.85 Ti 0.15 O 4 ceramics with different ball milling temperatures were prepared by the solid-phase method. The X-ray diffraction results showed that the high ball milling temperature (45 ± 5 °C) led to the hydration of the material phase, resulting in the formation of a large amount of (CaO) 3 Al 2 O 3 (H 2 O) 6 phase. The results of the scanning electronic microscope and the energy dispersive spectroscopy confirmed that the hydrated powders resulted in heterogeneous microstructure characteristics with a wide grain size distribution of ceramics sintered, which degraded dielectric characteristics, especially reducing the quality factor (around 30,000). However, controlling the ball mill temperature in the range of 20 ± 5 °C, there was no hydration occurring in the slurry. Thus, the sintered ceramics at optimum temperature exhibited excellent microwave dielectric properties, a dielectric constant of around 19.6, a high-quality factor of 70,000 GHz, and a near zero temperature coefficient (< ± 4 ppm/°C) of resonant frequency in a wide temperature range from − 40 to 125 °C.

Integrated identification and detection of hydration state and its evolution using terahertz technology

Rong Zhao,Qiang Niu,Ghulam Murtaza,Guling Zhang,Yuping Yang

The accurate detection of dehydration processes in hydrated drugs can reveal various intermolecular vibration modes mediated by hydrogen bonds between water molecules and other components, which underpin the further development of pharmaceutical science, food safety and biophysics. Herein, terahertz (THz) technology is utilized to investigate the dehydration state of d (+)-Raffinose pentahydrate (Rf·5H 2 O), in conjunction with imaging-based point by point scanning data acquisition and barcodes methods, to establish an innovative platform integrated identification, trace detection, and application capabilities. Our study demonstrates that the dehydration process of Rf·5H 2 O can be dynamically monitored through the evolution of its THz absorption peaks, offering more precise results compared to XRD and Raman spectroscopies. Moreover, the absorbance spectra data collected at each individual pixel is utilized to build visualized THz images, achieving an ultralow minimum content required for detection of 0.032 μg/(50 μm) 2 . Additionally, we introduce a THz spectra-barcode conversion system that not only ensures efficient electronic recordkeeping but also enhances user readability, thereby facilitating the practical applications of THz technology.

Hydroxyl-Hydration-Promoted Antifouling Performances of Amphiphilic Nanoparticle-Doped Poly(caprolactone-polydimethylsiloxane) Coatings

Penghong Pang,Xiuhua Sun,Changlu Gao

In this study, amphiphilic copolymers with biocompatible and electrically neutral poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) as a hydrophilic block and poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) as a hydrophobic block were synthesized, which were then incorporated into the coating matrix poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PCL–PDMS) for the fabrication of marine coatings. With the hydrolysis of PCL in water, the self-assembled amphiphilic copolymer may be exposed on coating surfaces with the PHEMA block extending to water. Experimental results proved that the hydration effects of hydroxyl groups in the PHEMA block enhanced the surface hydrophilicity and accelerated the weight loss rate. More importantly, the antibacterial rate of the coating against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus can reach 98.41 and 97.67%, respectively, in comparison with those of 55.36 and 51.97%, respectively, for the PCL–PDMS matrix. Additionally, the marine field tests elucidated that the amphiphilic polymers with longer PHEMA chains exhibit stronger antifouling capability in the marine environment. And the marine field tests evidenced that the developed PLMA-b-PHEMA incorporated coatings can withstand biofouling for up to 5 months.

A hydration-regulated reusable hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent for sustainable PLA coloration

Tianyang Li,Keting Li,Chengjian Yao,Tao Zhao

Developing sustainable coloration routes for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) fabrics requires the simultaneous achievement of efficient dye transfer, reduced thermal demand, and recyclable processing media. Herein, a water-tuned reusable hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent (HNaDES) medium was constructed from thymol and menthol for carrier-free coloration of PLA fabrics with Disperse Blue 60 (B60). The HNaDES/water system functioned as a tunable dye-carrying medium rather than a conventional dyeing auxiliary, in which water regulated dye solvation, dye release, solvent–fiber interaction, and dye–PLA affinity. By optimizing the water content, HNaDES-40W achieved a K/S value of 10.17 with 87.7% color retention after reduction clearing at 110 °C. More importantly, efficient coloration was realized at 90 °C, giving a K/S value of 8.53, higher than that of conventional aqueous dyeing even at 110 °C. Density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that moderate water addition loosened the HNaDES hydrogen-bonding network, moderated excessive solvent–fiber interaction, and established a favorable balance between B60 mobility and dye–PLA affinity. The dyed fabrics retained stable morphology, chemical structure, thermal behavior, crystalline features, and practical usability. Moreover, the HNaDES-rich phase was recovered through water-induced phase separation and maintained 95.4% of the first-cycle K/S value after five reuse cycles. This work demonstrates a reusable HNaDES medium for sustainable PLA coloration and provides a solvent-regulation strategy for more resource-efficient textile wet processing.

New insights into early hydration mechanisms of vaterite-metakaolin-cement ternary blended systems

Wanhao Yu,Yang Li,Le Guo,Fengjuan Wang,Jinyang Jiang,Zhiyong Liu

While vaterite is acknowledged to enhance the early-age strength of metakaolin-calcium carbonate-cement systems, understanding of its role in hydration remains limited. This study divides the hydration kinetics of ternary blends with vaterite substituting limestone powder into two stages, including an initial acceleration (up to 7 days) and a subsequent deceleration period. The filler effect of vaterite accelerates the reaction of clinker and metakaolin during the first 1–3 days. The earlier carboaluminate precipitation is attributed to the shortened time to reach maximum ettringite content, resulting from the accelerated depletion of gypsum. However, the enhanced pore refinement reduces the acceleration of vaterite on the rate of hydration growth after 7 days, compared to limestone powder. The R 3 test demonstrates that the vaterite reactivity is reduced by the coverage of hydration products on its surface. New insights are obtained on the correlation between reactivity and morphology evolution of vaterite in low-carbon blends.

Regulating Lignin Condensation and Extraction in Acidic Deep Eutectic Solvents through Controlled Hydration

Leiming Wang,Wenjiao Ge,Chen Chaoli,Kang Li,Han Zhou,Ximin Li,Caili Li,Xiaohui Wang

Acidic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) facilitate lignocellulosic fractionation, yet their high viscosity and acidity often limit mass transfer and promote lignin condensation and byproduct formation, particularly for compositionally complex feedstocks. In this work, water was introduced into a p-toluenesulfonic acid/choline chloride (PTSA/ChCl) DES system to regulate lignin extraction and product properties during the fractionation of protein-rich brewer’s spent grains (BSG). At a water content of 20%, efficient lignin separation was achieved under mild conditions (80 °C, 45 min), with a lignin removal rate of 81.2% and a cellulose retention rate of 87.4%. Structural analyses show that the extracted lignin exhibits favorable structural integrity, with reduced condensation and limited solvent incorporation. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that water restructures hydrogen-bonding interactions and suppresses dehydration-driven lignin condensation without compromising solubility. These results identify water as a key regulator in acidic DES systems, enabling efficient and selective lignin fractionation from compositionally complex biomass.

Bio-inspired hydration lubrication enabled by crosslinked polyacrylamide particles in epoxy composite coatings

Xiaoyu Zong,Jing Chen,Zengxue Hu,Xiping Gao,Dahu Yao,Chang Lu,Xinchang Pang

Developing epoxy coatings capable of stable lubrication in aqueous environments remains challenging due to the low viscosity and poor retention of water at sliding interfaces. In this study, a bio-inspired epoxy/polyacrylamide (EP/PAM) composite coating was constructed to achieve hydration-regulated lubrication and water-triggered functional response. Crosslinked polyacrylamide particles were embedded into the epoxy matrix as dispersed water-storage units, enabling constrained swelling and surface reconstruction upon water exposure, thereby regulating the interfacial hydration state and real contact behavior. By tailoring particle content and crosslink density, the lubrication performance could be rationally controlled. The optimized EP/PAM1–25 coating exhibited a minimum coefficient of friction of 0.10 and a specific wear rate of 0.91 *10⁻ 4 mm 3 ·N⁻ 1 ·m −1 , corresponding to reductions of approximately 60% and 80%, respectively, compared with pure epoxy. The tribological performance showed a non-monotonic dependence on crosslink density, reflecting the balance between swelling capacity and interfacial lubrication stability. The coating maintained low friction under varying loads and sliding speeds. Device-level demonstrations further confirmed pressure-driven drainage and leakage-triggered alarm activation enabled by water-induced friction transition. This work provides a controllable strategy for designing adaptive hydration-lubricated coatings and broadens their potential in water-responsive systems.

Competitive roles of sulphate and reactive carbonate in the hydration of tricalcium aluminate

Xiao Zhang,Rui Sun,Shuai Nie,Peiliang Shen,Long Jiang,Zihan Ma,Dongmin Wang,Chi-sun Poon

The regulation of tricalcium aluminate (C 3 A) hydration by calcium sulphate is essential for controlling the setting of Portland cement, yet the role of calcium carbonate in the early hydration of C 3 A remains insufficiently characterized due to its low solubility. In this study, the hydration of C 3 A was investigated in gypsum – C 3 A, amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) – C 3 A and gypsum – ACC – C 3 A systems using ACC as a highly reactive carbonate source. Hydration kinetics, solution chemistry and phase assemblages were monitored by isothermal calorimetry, ion concentration measurements, XRD, TGA/DTG, FTIR, and 27 Al MAS NMR. Gypsum imposed a prolonged induction period by suppressing C 3 A dissolution, even in the presence of ACC. In contrast, ACC promoted rapid formation of carbonate AFm phases in the absence of sulphate, although it rapidly crystallized into CaCO 3 polymorphs. In the ternary system, ACC remained largely unreacted and predominantly amorphous during the gypsum-controlled induction period and reacted rapidly only after sulphate and ettringite depletion. Distinct phase assemblages and pore structures developed in the three systems, reflecting the different roles of sulphate and carbonate in regulating early C 3 A hydration. These results provide a direct basis for distinguishing sulphate and carbonate effects on early C 3 A hydration.

Hydration-mediated zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte with hierarchical network for aqueous zinc ion batteries

Min Gong,You Wu,Enhui Zhang,Hanling Guo,Qiuji Chen,Liang Zhang,Xiang Lin,Fengxian Gao,Zhen Wu,Dongrui Wang

Designing hydrogel electrolytes for aqueous zinc-ion batteries necessitates a delicate balance between retaining water for ion conduction and restricting its activity to prevent interfacial side reactions. Herein, we present a hydration-mediated hydrogel electrolyte with a supramolecular hierarchical network integrating poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and a sulfonate-terminated zwitterionic polymer. Formed through freezing and thawing combined with dynamic Zn 2+ coordination, this hierarchical framework achieves robust mechanical stability with the aid of strong intermolecular binding. At the molecular level, the zwitterionic moieties substantially reduce the content of free water and reconstruct the aqueous environment into a dynamic, bound-water layer via strong hydration. Benefiting from this engineered polymer-water interaction that facilitates Zn 2+ desolvation and transport, alongside the spatial and electrostatic restriction of anion migration, the hydrogel achieves an exceptional ionic conductivity of 16.65 mS cm −1 and a high Zn 2+ transference number of 0.75. Consequently, a Zn||Cu cell achieves an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.2% over 600 cycles, while a Zn||Zn x V 2 O 5 full cell retains 78.4% capacity after 1000 cycles at 2.7 A g −1 . This work establishes a supramolecular design principle of constructing hydration-mediated ion channels within a hierarchical network, providing an effective strategy to reconcile fast, selective ion transport with high electrochemical and mechanical stability in hydrogel electrolytes for aqueous Zn 2+ batteries. Hydration-induced stiffness enabling robust thermal cycling of high temperature fuel cells cathode

Yang Hongxin,Zhang Yuan,Liu Zhipeng,Hu Chunfang,Li Junbiao,Liao Hailong,Shao Minhua,Ni Meng,Chen Bin,Shao Zongping,Xie Heping

Thermo-mechanics of cathode is closely related to the durability of high-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), with two main mechanical failures during thermal cycling: interface delamination and bulk cracking of cathode. Bulk cracking, caused by insufficient fracture strength/stiffness is a big concern but often overlooked. Here, we introduce chemical hydration to offset the thermal expansion, enhancing the cathodic mechanical stiffness and fracture strength, thus promoting the thermo-mechanical durability of cathode in proton ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). Such chemical-induced expansion offset is achieved by strengthening intergranular bonding inside the bulk cathode after the hydration, preventing granule detachment during thermal shrinkage. As a demonstration, the stiffness-enhanced air electrode (BaCo 0.7 Ce 0.15 Y 0.15 O 3 , noted as s-BCC-Y) exhibits 86% enhancement of fracture strength, thus thermal cycling stability with almost no degradation after 35 harsh thermal cycles between 600 and 300 °C, surpassing pristine BaCo 0.7 Ce 0.3 O 3 and many cobalt-free PCFC cathodes. Benefitted from the improved stiffness of cathode, full cell with the s-BCC-Y electrode demonstrates enhanced power output. This work highlights the importance of bulk cathode thermo-mechanics in developing robust SOFCs for high temperature energy applications.

Sequential coupling of hydration and carbonation in alite: reaction dynamics and phase evolution

Yuyang Zhao,Xu Fang,Shunfan Guo,Xiangming Zhou,Binmeng Chen

Wet carbonation emerges as a pivotal technology for CO 2 sequestration and performance enhancement, wherein hydration and carbonation occur simultaneously and interactively. However, the mutual influence between these processes remains insufficiently understood. In our work, to maximize wet carbonation efficiency, CO 2 flow rate is set at 150 mL/min, which demonstrates the lowest residual alite (12.38 wt%) and high TG weight loss (34.57 wt%). Under identical CO 2 injection conditions, various durations for pre-hydration and wet carbonation duration are set to study the reaction dynamics of pre-hydrated alite under wet carbonation. During the pre-hydration stage, calcium hydroxide (CH) formed initially is preferentially carbonated, while C-S-H coatings on alite particles mitigates CO 2 penetration, slowing down alite carbonation and extending the pH plateau. As a result, pre-hydration stabilizes the system pH and delays alite dissolution, among which the unhydrated sample (Pre-H0) yields the highest reaction degree between 10 and 40 min of carbonation. In the wet carbonation stage, amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) forms consistently which is stable at high pH and with dissolved silicate oligomer and converses to vaterite and calcite as carbonation time extends due to the decreased pH and polymerized silicates. In the post-hydration stage, residual alite continuously hydrates to stabilize ions concentration and pH of liquid phase. Solid-phase transformations include C-S-H formation via alite hydration and secondary hydration of CH with silica gel, alongside phase transitions among ACC, vaterite, and calcite.
