Lignin accounted for the second largest amount in biomass, and was regarded as an important carbon source and important renewable source for value-added chemicals. Herein, a series of lignin-derived carbon-based heterogeneous catalyst was synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method , using Co-MOFs as template. Lignin was introduced as a carbon material into MOF catalysts. Through some characterizations, it has been proven that lignin has been successfully introduced into MOF materials and significantly improved the catalyst performance. Then, lignin-MOF derived catalysts (Co/C-EL-X) were successfully introduced into the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols . The addition of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EL) in catalysts, calcination temperature and some other factors were investigated in detail, considering the catalytic performance during the HDO of vanillin and other typical lignin-derived phenols. Co/C-EL-0.5(500) exhibited the best catalytic performance for the conversion of different kinds of lignin-derived phenols to either 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) or cyclohexanol . Under the optimal conditions of 240 °C, 0 MPa N 2 , and 2 h, the conversion rate of vanillin reached 100 %, and the yield of 4-methyl-2-methoxyphenol (MMP) was up to 92 %. Furthermore, vanillin could also be converted into 4-methylcyclohexanol (MCYL) by changing the initial nitrogen pressure. Also, Co/C-EL-0.5 (500) exhibited high activity for the conversion of other lignin-derived phenols into cyclohexanol (COL). This work provided a novel strategy for the catalytic valorization of lignin sources.

Alkaline lignin and sodium lignosulfonate were chemically modified by using maleic acid for potential application on the production of ultra-flexible gelatin films. The comparison results in morphology and chemical structures of the two types of lignin before and after modification revealed that carboxyl and C C groups were successfully grafted onto the lignin, resulting in the changes in physical-chemical properties. Compared to modified sodium lignosulfonate, modified alkaline lignin (MAL) was much more appropriate in the preparation of gelatin (GEL)/lignin films by endowing the films with transparency and excellent UV light shielding ability. Elongation at break of GEL/MAL films were more than two times that of the pure gelatin film, which greatly addressed the brittleness issues of the pure gelatin films during use, indicating that the modified alkaline lignin could be used as renewable additive with replacement of glycerol. The results in this study also gave evidence that the sources and structure of lignin affect its compatibility with gelatin solution. The higher weight loss rate and lower pyrolysis degradation temperature indicated that the gelatin/lignin films were much more easily thermal degradable at the end of service life. This research provided a potential and efficient approach on the production of renewable and biological films from gelatin and lignin.

Nonproductive adsorption of cellulase onto the residual lignin in substrate seriously hinders the enzymatic hydrolysis. To understand how lignin structure affects lignin-cellulase interaction, the carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) functionalized atomic force microscope tip was used to measure CBM-lignin interaction by single-molecule dynamic force spectroscopy in this work. The results showed that sulfonated lignin (SL) has the greatest adhesion force to CBM (4.74 nN), while those of masson pine milled wood lignin (MWL), poplar MWL and herbaceous MWLs were 2.85, 1.03 and 0.27–0.61 nN, respectively. It provides direct quantitative evidence for the significance of lignin structure on lignin-cellulase interaction. The CBM-MWLs interaction decreased sharply to 0.054–0.083 nN while SL was added, indicating the primary mechanism of SL promoting lignocellulose hydrolysis was significantly reducing the nonproductive adsorption of substrate lignin on cellulase. Finally, the “competitive adsorption” mechanism was proposed to interpret why SL effectively promotes the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignin-containing substrates.

Selective hydrogenolysis of the Caryl–O bonds in lignin is a key strategy for the generation of fuels and chemical feedstocks from biomass. Currently, hydrogenolysis has been mainly conducted using hydrogen, which is flammable and not sustainable or economical. Herein, an external hydrogen-free process for aryl ethers hydrogenolysis in lignin models and dioxasolv lignin over nickel nanoparticles supported on Al2O3, is reported. Kinetic studies reveal that the transfer hydrogenolysis activity of the three model compounds decreased in the following order: benzyl phenyl ether (α-O-4), 2-phenylethyl phenyl ether (β-O-4) and diphenyl ether (4-O-5), which linearly corresponds to their binding energies and the activation energies. The main reaction route for the three model compounds was the cleavage of the ether bonds to produce aromatic alkanes and phenol, and the latter was further reduced to cyclohexanol. Dioxasolv lignin depolymerization results exhibit a significant Caryl–O decrease over the Ni nanoparticles supported on Al2O3 with iso-propanol as the hydrogen source through 2D-HSQC-NMR analysis, which confirmed the transfer hydrogenolysis conclusion in the model study. This work provides an economical and environmentally-friendly method for the selective cleavage of lignin and lignin model compounds into value-added chemicals.

Expanding the range of monomers prepared by lignin depolymerization is of great importance to achieving sustainable and high-value biorefineries. However, there is a trade-off between the fast conversion technology and the slow conversion pathway from lignin to high-value chemicals. Herein, we use microwave-assisted depolymerization technology with low energy consumption and fast reaction speed, and use different nitrogen sources to achieve target liquid products. Different pretreatment strategies modify the dielectric properties of lignin, boosting liquid product conversion efficiency and enhancing biochar application value. Microwave-assisted depolymerization of ammonium paratungstate-lignin mixtures yields substantial amounts of phenols and nitrogenous compounds. Multi-physic field coupled finite element simulations and kinetic analyses revealed that the dielectric disparity between ammonium paratungstate and lignin particles under microwave irradiation triggers a potent interfacial polarization effect. This effect substantially elevates the depolymerization temperature. Additionally, the incorporation of ammonium paratungstate notably decreases the reaction activation energy from 30.15 kJ mol −1 to 25.16 kJ mol −1 , thereby enhancing the depolymerization efficiency. This approach enables the one-step conversion of lignin to nitrogen-containing monomers (pyridine, quinoline, aniline) through reactions between lignin side chains/phenolic monomers and amines, offering a viable route for lignin valorization and guiding future production of high-value lignin-derived monomers.

Low lignin solubility in aqueous solution is one of the major bottlenecks for lignin biodegradation and bioconversion. Alkaline solution contributes to improving lignin solubility, whereas most microbes can not survive in alkaline conditions. Herein, lignin dissolution behaviors in different pH solutions were systematically investigated, which indicated that solution pH above 10.5 contributed to high solubility of alkali lignin. To match with alkaline lignin aqueous system, several alkali-tolerant ligninolytic bacteria were isolated, most of which are distinct to previously reported ones. Then, the ligninolytic capabilities of these isolates were assessed in different pH conditions by determining their assimilation on alkali lignin, lignin-derived monomers and dimers, their decolorization capabilities, and their lignin peroxidase activities. Thereafter, the underlying ligninolytic and alkali-tolerant mechanisms of Sutcliffiella sp. NC1, an alkalophilic bacterium, was analyzed on the basis of its genome information. The results not only provide valuable information for lignin biodegradation and lignin valorization, but also expand knowledge on alkali-tolerant bacteria.

Lignin-containing cellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) offer intrinsic UV shielding, improved hydrophobicity, and thermal stability, yet their dark appearance limits applications requiring high whiteness and faithful color rendering. Here, we report a strategy that breaks the long-standing linkage between lignin richness and dark coloration by combining lignin pre-enrichment with chromophore-selective oxidative whitening. Specifically, dilute H2SO4 pretreatment enriches lignin by removing acid-labile carbohydrates, and subsequent alkaline H2O2 bleaching eliminates chromophores with controlled lignin loss. Mechanical fibrillation then yields whitened LCNFs (wLCNFs) with high whiteness of 70–82 while retaining 20.20–25.20 wt % lignin; notably, the highest lignin wLCNF contains more lignin than the native feedstock (25.20 vs 23.40%). Within a moderate processing window, wLCNF films show ∼120 MPa tensile strength, reduced water vapor transmission, and strong UV blocking. As a proof-of-concept, adding 5 wt % wLCNF to a commercial sunscreen raises SPF from 15.8 to 37.6 without visible tinting.

Green synthesis of high-purity Ti 4 O 7 with ultrahigh surface area using lignin. • Lignin inhibits sintering and endows Ti 4 O 7 with hierarchical porous structure. • Ti 4 O 7 @Co(OH) 2 shows excellent lignin electrocatalytic oxidation performance. • Lignin flow fuel cell reaches 5.19 mW/cm 2 peak power density. • This work promotes lignin valorization and green electrode preparation. Ti 4 O 7 is a highly promising electrode material for lignin electrocatalytic conversion and fuel cells owing to its high electrical conductivity, excellent electrochemical stability, and acid–alkali resistance. However, Ti 4 O 7 synthesized by conventional carbothermal reduction suffers from severe sintering, low specific surface area, and insufficient active sites, which hardly meet the requirements for high-efficiency electrocatalysis. This work employs lignin as both a carbon source and a pore-forming precursor. The in-situ pore generation and steric hindrance effect during lignin pyrolysis and carbonization suppress particle agglomeration in high-temperature reduction, enabling the preparation of Ti 4 O 7 with high purity and large specific surface area. Transition metal hydroxides were loaded via electrochemical deposition to construct transition metal hydroxide-modified Ti 4 O 7 -based composite electrodes, which significantly optimize surface active sites and electrocatalytic reaction kinetics. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared Ti 4 O 7 exhibits a purity of 96% and a specific surface area as high as 226.7 m 2 /g, far exceeding the product reduced by traditional carbon black. Among all Ti 4 O 7 -based composite electrodes, the Co(OH) 2 -modified sample displays the optimal lignin electrocatalytic oxidation performance, with an oxidation onset potential of 0.12 V (vs Hg/HgO) and a Tafel slope as low as 173.57 mV/dec. The assembled lignin flow fuel cell delivers a peak power density of 5.19 mW/cm 2 and a limiting current density of 25.2 mA/cm 2 , showing no obvious performance degradation after 8 h of continuous operation. This work provides experimental evidence for the green and controllable preparation of high-specific-surface-area Ti 4 O 7 , high-value utilization of lignin, and development of high-performance biomass fuel cells. Efficient hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds in lignin offers a promising pathway for producing high-value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing an easily synthesized, highly active catalyst for this process remains a challenge. In this paper, a series of Ni-M(Pd, Pt, Ru)/C catalysts were prepared and synergized with NaOH to produce aromatic compounds from β-O-4 model compound (MC). Among the catalyst systems, Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH completely converted β-O-4 MC at mild conditions (150 °C, 2 MPa H 2 , 3 h) to produce monomers with a yield of 95.6 wt% and excellent selectivity of the bond-breaking products as high as 85.5 %. Recycling tests showed that the Ni-0.25 % Pd/C catalyst remained stable after five cycles, with high activity and without the need for a further reduction before runs. Further, the catalytic system has proven to exhibit high activity for the cleavage of other types of lignin MC, such as 4-O-5, α-O-4, β-O-4 and ether bond (diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, Guaiacolylglycerol-β-guaiacol ether, benzyl ether) and also effective for lignin from enzymatic cleavage (LEC). Hydrogenolysis of LEC achieved a monomer yield of 34.5 wt%; the molecular weight (555 g/mol) of the hydrogenolysis oligomer was significantly reduced compared to LEC (2872 g/mol). The highly active and stable Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH catalytic system provides a promising pathway for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin and lignin model compounds to produce high-value biofuels and chemicals.

Kraft lignin (KL), a major by-product of the pulp and paper industry, has garnered significant research attention due to its abundant availability and distinctive chemical structure, making it a promising candidate for applications such as biofuels, carbon materials, and polymer composites. Despite these advantages, its utilization in fine chemical industries, including nanomaterials, is constrained by its inherent dark color and broad molecular weight distribution. Addressing these limitations has become a central focus in ongoing research efforts aimed at enhancing the functionality and commercial viability of KL. In this study, we fractionated KL from a paper-making enterprise using pH fractionation, and obtained four kinds of lignin with different molecular weights. Following that, lignin microspheres (LMPs) were formed by self-assembly from four sizes of KL. Analyzing the KL and LMP properties, the low molecular weight lignin, such as KL-2, exhibited good antioxidant properties (84.27 %, 5 mg/mL), high brightness (ISO% = 7.6), high L ⁎ value (L ⁎ = 86.2) and low polydispersity index (PDI = 1.19). The LMP showed a narrow size distribution (1.0–1.4 μm). When the LMP content is 5 %, the 5 % LMP/PVA film maintains high transparency and exhibits excellent UV protection, achieving a UV shielding rate of up to 94.6 %. Therefore, this study offered an effective way for the comprehensive utilization of pulping waste KL.

The cost of enzymolysis is a major bottleneck for the industrialisation of lignocellulosic enzymatic hydrolysis technology, and recycling cellulase can reduce this cost. Herein, a sulfobetaine prepolymer (CPS) with terminal chlorine was grafted onto enzymatic hydrolysis residual lignin (EHL) from corncob to construct thermosensitive lignin-based “molecular glues” (lignin-based sulfobetaine polymers, L-CPS) that were used to recover and recycle cellulase. L-CPS 2 (1.0 g/L) was added to the corncob residue (CCR) enzymolysis system (50 °C, pH 4.5). After hydrolysis, L-CPS 2 co-precipitated with cellulase through hydrophobic binding when cooling to 25 °C. This co-precipitation decreased the amount of cellulase by 40 %. In summary, a thermally responsive lignin-based molecular glue was constructed for green recycling of cellulase, providing a new approach to decreasing the cost of lignocellulosic enzymolysis and high value utilisation of industrial lignin.

The formation of low molecular weight lignin nanoparticles (LMW-LNPs) remains challenging due to their severe self-aggregation effect as well as thermal instability, hindering their scalability and functional applications. This study develops a novel γ-valerolactone (GVL)/deep eutectic solvent (DES) biphasic system incorporating polyol-based hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) to systematically modulate the hydrogen bond acidity of DES, enabling selective depolymerization of industrial lignin in acid lithium bromide hydrate (ALBTH) while effectively suppressing lignin condensation. The optimized system achieved a low lignin molecular weight of 1213 g/mol with minimal condensation, yielding monodisperse low-molecular-weight lignin nanoparticles (LMW-LNPs) with an average diameter of 92.3 nm. Mechanistic investigations using the veratrylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether (VG) model compound revealed that lignin aryl ether bonds are cleaved via hydrogen transfer from the DES-HBD component, which disrupts the condensation pathway through competitive hydrogen bonding. The LMW-LNPs which maintain structural integrity while achieving depolymerization during the preparation of lignin-based materials exhibit efficient photothermal conversion and dye adsorption properties. They offer a transformative approach for the sustainable production of functional lignin nanomaterials with customized properties, addressing key challenges in the value-added utilization of lignin and promoting advanced applications of lignin-based materials.
