The massive discharged of kenaf degumming wastewater posed severe environmental challenges due to its high solid waste content (more than 90% parenchyma cells (PCs) and a small number of fiber cells), yet current treatment strategies primarily focus on reducing chemical oxygen demand (COD) while neglecting the valorization of these solids. To address this gap, this study proposed a sustainable approach to repurpose PCs (abundant yet underutilized sheet structure lignocellulosic solid waste) into high-strength lignocellulose film. A hierarchical physical screening method was developed to isolate PCs from wastewater, followed by high pressure solid-liquid separation and filtration equipment to fabricate lignocellulose film. The natural sheet morphology of PCs (50–500 μm length and 25–250 μm width) facilitated dense brick-layer stacking, enabling exceptional dry strength (27.4 MPa) and modulus (4.84 GPa). Notably, the PCs film retained 30.28% dry strength (7.51 MPa) under wet conditions, outperforming conventional paper (14.32% retention). Further modification via nano-silica (NS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) enhanced interfacial interactions through hydrogen bonding and Si-O-C/Si-O-Si covalent grafting, achieving a tensile strength of 49.44 MPa (increase by 40%) and modulus of 6.72 GPa (increase by 39%). Thermal stability analysis revealed a maximum decomposition temperature of 354.41 °C, attributable to the synergistic effects of NS inorganic reinforcement and GPTMS crosslinking. Comparative evaluations against 8 commercial papers demonstrated excellent mechanical properties. This work pioneered the conversion of solid waste from kenaf degumming waste into functional cellulose films, offering a dual solution for pollution mitigation and sustainable material innovation in packaging.

Although previous studies have shown that microorganisms can decompose crop straw to enhance soil fertility and crop yield, the effects of different treatment methods on the decomposition of returned straw, as well as the mechanisms underlying these effects, require clarification. A corn straw returning experiment was conducted using potassium persulfate (PS) and inoculation of quorum sensing-producing bacteria (RH) to explore the effects of different treatment methods on the decomposition of straw and the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that RH promoted the decomposition of straw more than PS based on the weight loss rate (68.4 % RH > 58.7 % PS > 43.8 % CK) and the lignocellulose content (51.2 % CK > 42.4 % PS > 34.6 % RH). RH enhanced communication and cooperation within bacterial communities and increased the expression of lignocellulose-degrading genes ( manA , egl and cbhA ) through fatty acid biosynthesis and two-component systems, which promoted enzyme production and accelerated the decomposition of returned straw. These findings enhance our understanding of how lignocellulose decomposition is precisely regulated in soil, aid the management and utilization of agricultural solid waste, and have implications for the sustainability of agroecosystems.

Abstract High (14.9%), medium (2.4%) and low (0.1%) lignin-containing cellulosic fibers were processed through a micro-grinding method to mechanically produce lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs). Effects of residual lignin on the mechanical defibrillation process were investigated in terms of the nanofibrils yields, the diameters of resultant LCNFs and the micro-grinding energy consumption. The results showed that the residual lignin delayed the initial defibrillation of cellulosic fibers due to its physical barrier. However, the residual lignin eventually facilitated the defibrillation and improved the maximum nanofibrils yields by 17.9–30.8%, and greatly reduced the diameters of the resultant LCNFs from 32.9 ± 7.7 to 9.2 ± 3.3 nm. The effects of lignin on counteracting the recombination reactions between the highly reactive cellulose radicals and hindering the aggregation of defibrillated fibrils through reducing the inter-fibrillar hydrogen bonding presumably resulted in the better eventual defibrillation of cellulosic fibrils. With the intensification of global energy crises and environmental issues, the development of sustainable, high-energy–density aviation fuels has become a prominent research focus. This study constructs polycyclic high-energy–density aviation fuels using β-pinene and lignocellulose-derived furfural/benzaldehyde as feedstocks through oxidation, aldol condensation, and hydrodeoxygenation reactions. Initially, β-pinene was efficiently oxidized by potassium permanganate to nopinone (achieving 99.2 % conversion with 91.5 % selectivity). Subsequently, nopinone underwent aldol condensation with aromatic aldehydes under solid base catalysts to obtain unsaturated ketone intermediates with high selectivity. Experimental results demonstrated that MgO exhibited optimal catalytic performance (96 % conversion for benzaldehyde condensation, 95 % for furfural condensation), with catalytic activity correlating to catalyst basicity and reaction temperature. The condensation products were successfully converted into polycyclic alkanes through hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) using Pd/C and Hβ catalysts synergistically. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the regulatory mechanism of aldehyde LUMO energy level differences on reactivity, clarified the energy variations during hydrodeoxygenation, and proposed plausible reaction pathways. The final products exhibited densities of 0.891 and 0.916 g·cm −3 (20°C) with corresponding heating values of 45.18 and 46.81 MJ·kg −1 , respectively, along with a freezing point as low as −64.1°C, demonstrating performance metrics closely approaching those of commercial JP-10 fuel.

Lignin condensation during biomass pretreatment generates recalcitrant structures that limit both enzymatic saccharification and lignin valorization. Addressing this challenge requires green strategies that simultaneously suppress condensation and enhance lignin reactivity. Herein, we report a γ-valerolactone (GVL) pretreatment incorporating in-situ lignin modification with terephthalaldehyde (TALD) to achieve dual control of lignin structure and functionality. The TALD-assisted process achieved a delignification ratio of 92.9 % and increased the enzymatic hydrolysis yield from 21.6 % to 79.8 % relative to GVL alone. Spectroscopic analyses (2D HSQC, 1 H, and 31 P NMR) revealed incorporation of aldehyde moieties (3.5 mmol/g lignin) and suppression of condensation linkages leading to the occurrence of a depolymerization. The modified lignin was further utilized to fabricate polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite films, where acetalization between TALD lignin and PVA imparted a 40.0 MPa increase in tensile strength over neat PVA. This work presents a sustainable, dual-function pretreatment that integrates biomass fractionation with lignin functionalization, advancing closed-loop lignocellulose utilization in green biorefineries.

Lignocellulose (LC), a distinctive biomass fibrous material, exhibits unique potential in catalysis due to its inherent structural properties and rich functional group. In this study, an efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst (LT-Fe 0 ) was successfully fabricated by immobilizing zero-valent iron (Fe 0 ) onto plant tannin-functionalized lignocellulose (LT). The as-prepared LT-Fe 0 exhibited remarkable catalytic activity toward ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation in aqueous solutions, achieving a removal efficiency of 93.21% under optimum conditions ([C 0 ] = 50 mg L −1 , [LT-Fe 0 ] = 0.5 g L −1 , T = 25 °C and pH = 3.0). The catalyst demonstrated effective anti-interference capability against some typical co-existing factors. Moreover, LT-Fe 0 retained 90.12% of its initial removal efficiency after six regeneration cycles. This excellent performance was attributed to the protective role of the LT matrix, which effectively reduced the agglomeration and oxidation of Fe 0 active sites. Radical quenching experiments confirmed that hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the predominant reactive oxygen species responsible for CIP degradation. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis, possible degradation pathways of CIP over LT-Fe 0 were proposed. Furthermore, toxicological assessment revealed that the degradation process substantially reduced the toxicity of CIP and its intermediates. This work provides a novel route for lignocellulose valorization and offers a practical solution for mitigating CIP contamination in specific aquatic environments.

Due to the complex and recalcitrant structure of the cell wall, the current process of lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) preparation directly from lignocellulosic biomass presents environmental pollution, large consumption of energy and chemicals, and low economic efficiency. In the previous research, we successfully prepared LCNF from wheat straw. However, the mechanism of different acids with small quantities in the pretreatment of lignocellulose during the preparation of LCNF is unrevealed. Herein, we select six organic and inorganic acids to pretreat wheat straw combined with glycerol swelling and mechanical action to directly prepare LCNF from wheat straw. The chemical, physical, mechanical, and thermal performances of LCNF are systematically investigated. Furthermore, the acidity of different reaction systems (glycerol and glycerol mixture containing varied acids) is evaluated to reveal the potential relationship between the performance of LCNF and varied acids with small quantities. The obtained H 2 SO 4 -LCNF film possesses good mechanical performances (the specific tensile stress of 78.4 KN m/kg and specific Young's modulus of 6.0 MN m/kg). Overall, we hope this work could offer theoretical guidance for the large-scale production of LCNF directly from lignocellulosic biomass by varied acid pretreatments.

Background Trichoderma reesei is currently the main strain for the commercial production of cellulase. Cellulose induced protein 1 (Cip1) is one of the most abundant proteins in extracellular proteins of T. reesei. Reported literatures about Cip1 mainly focused on the regulation of Cip1 and its possible enzyme activities, but the effect of Cip1 on the enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose and possible mechanism have not still been reported. Results In this study, Cip1 from T. reesei was cloned, expressed and purified, and its effects on enzymatic hydrolysis of several different pretreated lignocellulose were investigated. It was found that Cip1 could promote the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated lignocellulose, and the promoting effect was significantly better than that of bovine serum albumin (BSA). And especially for the lignocellulosic substrate with high lignin content such as liquid hot water pretreated corn stover and corncob residue, the promoting effect of Cip1 was even better than that of the commercial cellulase when adding equal amount protein. It was also showed that the metal ions Zn2+ and Cu2+ influenced the promoting effect on enzymatic hydrolysis. The Cip1 protein had no lyase activity, but it could destroy the crystal structure of cellulose and reduce the non-productive adsorption of cellulase on lignin, which partly interpreted the promoting effect of Cip1 on enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulose. Conclusion The Cip1 from T. reesei could significantly promote the enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated lignocellulose, and the promotion of Cip1 was even higher than that of commercial cellulase in the enzymatic hydrolysis of the substrates with high lignin content. This study will help us to better optimize cellulase to improve its ability to degrade lignocellulose, thereby reducing the cost of enzymes required for enzymatic hydrolysis.

Previous studies showed that adding zero valent iron (ZVI) can increase the methane production and degradation rate of organic waste by improving the performance of anaerobic digester. However, our study firstly found that ZVI (37 μm, 10 g/L) inhibited the anaerobic digestion (AD) of cow manure and lignocellulose. ZVI significantly increased the methanogenic rate of cow manure in the first 6 days, but decreased the accumulative methane yield and volatile fatty acids yield by 10.3 and 12%, respectively. The effect of ZVI on AD of liquid biomass separated from cow manure was positive, but the effect on solid biomass was negative. These results indicated that ZVI enhanced the AD of easily biodegradable organics but inhibited the biodegradation of refractory organics (lignocellulose). By analyzing the varying effects of ZVI in diverse anaerobic systems, it was found that the effects were influenced by the characteristics of substrate and inoculum-substrate ratio. This study suggested that only proper ZVI addition can improve the AD process depending on the feeding materials.

Cellulose acetate (CA) ultrafiltration membranes are attracting more attention in wastewater purification due to its biodegradability and eco-friendly. The application of CA membranes, however, is limited by high susceptibility to bacterial corrosion and lack of mechanical tolerance that results in loss of life. To solve the above problems, we first fabricated the CA-based composite membranes incorporated with bamboo-based lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNFs) by a strategy of phase inversion. LCNFs was prepared by using a combined method of one-step chemical pretreatment and acid hydrolysis coupled with high-pressure homogenization. The as-prepared CA/LCNFs composite membranes with 4 wt% lignin in the LCNFs exhibited high tensile strength of 7.08 MPa and strain-at-break of 12.21%, and high filtration permeability of 188.23 L·m −2 ·h −1 as ultrafiltration membranes for wastewater treatment, which could obviously inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli .

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignocellulose-derived oxygenates to diesel or jet fuel range C8–C18 alkanes usually requires harsh reaction conditions. A fairly mild (160 °C, 4 MPa H2) one-pot catalytic HDO system based on Ru/HAP combined with the HZSM-5 catalyst was developed, and a series of diesel or jet fuel range alkanes (C8–C18), including straight, branched, and cyclic alkanes, were obtained from nine complicated lignocellulose-derived oxygenates with a desired yield. Ru/HAP was characterized by a series of analyses, indicating that the electron donor effect of HAP led to the generation of highly dispersed electron-rich Ru, which demonstrated stronger hydrogen activation and hydrogenolysis ability.

Herein, thermo-sensitive lignocellulose hydrogels with varying lignin contents were fabricated with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) by a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (SIPN) strategy using a LiCl/DMSO solvent system. Soda lignin mixed with the lignocellulose/LiCl/DMSO solution was also used to prepare the composite hydrogels, and the influence of the existential state of lignin on the hydrogel properties was analyzed objectively. The SIPN hydrogels exhibited more favorable mechanical properties due to the physical entanglement of poly-NIPAAm and lignocellulose. The presence of externally added lignin in the composite hydrogels is beneficial for mechanical improvement. Both the mechanical properties and the morphologies of the SIPN hydrogels can be tuned by varying the existential state and content of lignin. Furthermore, the prepared SIPN hydrogels showed rapid conversion from being hydrophilic at 20 °C to being hydrophobic at 45 °C. All SIPN hydrogels exhibited obvious oil absorbency in an oil/water mixture at 45 °C. Moreover, the different lignin existential states in the hydrogels resulted in different lower critical solution temperatures (LCST). This study provides a feasible route to produce reinforced thermo-sensitive hydrogels and develops a method for tailoring the morphology and the absorption properties of hydrogels by controlling the existential state and content of lignin.
