A High-Permeance Nanofiltration Membrane via Complementary Interface Engineering for Enhanced Selectivity between Mineral Salts and Emerging Pollutants

Lu Chenghai,Sun Yu,Zhou Zhuofeng,Zhang Mingqi,He Guangzhi,Hu Chengzhi

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high water permeance, superior emerging pollutant (EP) retention, and selective mineral salt passage are highly desirable for high-quality drinking water treatment, yet challenging due to the selectivity−permeance trade-off. Herein, a polyamide-based NF membrane was engineered via a complementary interface strategy involving (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (CD) doping and secondary sulfonamidation with sulfuryl chloride (SC). The resulting CD-PA-SC membrane exhibited excellent water permeance (26.9 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , 3.5- and 2.4-fold higher than NF 90 and NF 270), while maintaining high rejection for five typical EPs with diverse properties and selectively allowing the passage of dietary mineral ions. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis, transition state theory, MD simulation, and DFT calculations revealed that CD-PA-SC’s thinner and more hydrophilic active layer promotes water permeance; its more negative surface charge facilitates mineral ion passage; and the tailored pore size, together with the CD-enhanced intrapore diffusion resistance, ensures enhanced broad-spectrum EP rejection. Thus, CD-PA-SC combines high efficiency, a low carbon footprint, and healthy water production, with promising applications in secondary water supply and point-of-use purifiers. This complementary dual-step modification strategy offers new insights into designing NF membranes for multiobjective separations in advanced drinking water treatment.

Ultrathin polyamide nanofilm with an asymmetrical structure: A novel strategy to boost the permeance of reverse osmosis membranes

Bowen Gan,Saren Qi,Xiaoxiao Song,Zhe Yang,Chuyang Y. Tang,Xingzhong Cao,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

Ultrathin polyamide (PA) nanofilm based separation membranes have attracted drastically increasing attention recently. Typically, PA nanofilms with the thickness of around tens of nanometers are supported by a PSF substrate membrane which provides mechanical support. However, the low surface porosity of the PSF substrate membrane has required the transverse diffusion (parallel to the membrane plane) of water molecules in the nanofilm, which causes much longer mean diffusion paths compared to the thickness of the nanofilm. In this study, we address this problem by introducing a much looser polypiperazinamide (PPA) interlayer in between the PA nanofilm and the PSF support membrane, with the PPA nanofilm serving as a low resistance region for water molecules. A dual interfacial polymerization strategy was applied to create an asymmetrical ultrathin polyamide selective layer comprised of a high permeability loose PPA sublayer and a high selectivity dense PA top layer. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCMD) techniques and Doppler broadening energy spectroscopy (DBES) were applied to study the asymmetry structure of the ultrathin polyamide nanofilms. Compared with the home-made traditional ultrathin polyamide (uPA) membrane, the asymmetrical ultrathin polyamide (A-uPA) membrane has 2–2.5 folds higher permeability while maintaining higher salt rejection. Our study demonstrates that the asymmetrical structure can significantly enhance the flux for ultrathin polyamide membranes. Further, the impact of the structure of the top layer and the sublayer on the membrane separation performance was explored by tuning the recipe of the PA top layer and the PPA sublayer.

Constructing asymmetric mixed matrix membrane with high permeance and antifouling performance by magnetic control of COF-coated Fe3O4 particles

Yuemin Guang,Ruochen Yuan,Bingjie Zhang,Dingqi Li,Ju Yang,Najun Liu,Yongheng Yin

Background Nanofiltration membranes are widely used for treating dye wastewater, while two major challenges hinder their application: the trade-off between permeance and selectivity, and membrane fouling. Methods Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can help membranes overcome the trade-off effect, and the combination of positively and negatively charged groups exhibit excellent antifouling properties. In this study, COF-coated Fe 3 O 4 particles are synthesized and functionalized with sulfonic acid groups, through magnetically induced surface segregation, a membrane with asymmetric structure is formed. The effects of modified particles on the membrane's structure are systematically investigated. Most importantly, the water permeance, dye rejection, and antifouling properties of as-prepared mixed matrix membranes are thoroughly evaluated. Significant Findings The magnetic-assisted method enriches more COFs containing both positively and negatively charged groups on the membrane surface, as a result, the prepared membranes exhibit outstanding performance in water permeance, dye removal and antifouling ability. For example, the P/Z-COF-5 membrane shows enhanced permeance from 65.2 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 (polyethersulfone, PES) to 165.6 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 , exhibits high rejection of 99.8 % for Eriochrome black T and 96.7 % for Congo red. In addition, the flux recovery ratio of P/Z-COF-5 membrane is 98.2 %, much higher than that of pristine PES (72.9 %).

Trade-off between Endocrine-Disrupting Compound Removal and Water Permeance of the Polyamide Nanofiltration Membrane: Phenomenon and Molecular Insights

Jiansuxuan Chen,Tianlin Wang,Ruobin Dai,Zhichao Wu,Zhiwei Wang

The polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane has the potential to remove endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) from water and wastewater to prevent risks to both the aquatic ecosystem and human health. However, our understanding of the EDC removal–water permeance trade-off by the PA NF membrane is still limited, although the salt selectivity–water permeance trade-off has been well illustrated. This constrains the precise design of a high-performance membrane for removing EDCs. In this study, we manipulated the PA nanostructures of NF membranes by altering piperazine (PIP) monomer concentrations during the interfacial polymerization (IP) process. The upper bound coefficient for EDC selectivity–water permeance was demonstrated to be more than two magnitudes lower than that for salt selectivity–water permeance. Such variations were derived from the different membrane–solute interactions, in which the water/EDC selectivity was determined by the combined effects of steric exclusion and the hydrophobic interaction, while the electrostatic interaction and steric exclusion played crucial roles in water/salt selectivity. We further highlighted the role of the pore number and residual groups during the transport of EDC molecules across the PA membrane via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Fewer pores decreased the transport channels, and the existence of residual groups might cause steric hindrance and dynamic disturbance to EDC transport inside the membrane. This study elucidated the trade-off phenomenon and mechanisms between EDC selectivity and water permeance, providing a theoretical reference for the precise design of PA NF membranes for effective removal of EDCs in water reuse.

Asymmetric support-side deposition strategy for high-permeance tubular CePO4/SiC catalytic membranes enabling synergistic PM and NOx removal

Yiqing Zeng,Guangyu Zhou,Jiangxiao Qiao,Yunqi Shi,Jicheng Han,Xiangsen Xu,Junwei Wu,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

Catalytic membranes are promising multifunctional materials for integrated pollutant control. However, conventional impregnation-based catalyst loading strategies often allow catalytic particles to infiltrate the separation layer, resulting in severe pore blockage and reduced permeance. Herein, we develop a rapid and low-cost asymmetric support-side deposition approach to fabricate tubular CePO 4 /SiC–S catalytic membranes, which effectively prevents catalyst penetration into the separation layer, minimizes pore blockage, and thereby enhances the permeance. The results indicate that CePO 4 catalysts are mainly anchored within the pores of the SiC support, rather than in the separation-layer pores, thereby preserving efficient gas transport pathways and avoiding direct contact between particulate matter (PM) and catalytic sites. Compared with conventional vacuum impregnation, the proposed method achieves comparable ammonia selective catalytic reduction (NH 3 -SCR) activity while reducing permeance loss from 35.44% to only 20.09%. The membrane demonstrated exceptional stability during a 240 h continuous operation at 350 °C, maintaining a dust rejection rate of >99.99% and NO conversion >90%. Notably, dust cake formation was found to further enhance catalytic efficiency, particularly under low filtration velocities (0.5 m min −1 ). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations revealed that moderate cake deposition promotes uniform flow distribution and extends residence time, thereby improving catalyst utilization. This work provides a scalable fabrication strategy for high-permeance catalytic membranes, offering a practical pathway for synergistic control of multiple pollutants at high temperatures.

Co-solvent microenvironment engineering promotes three-dimensional topological evolution of polyamide nanofiltration membranes to improve the permeance-selectivity balance

Feihong Wang,Xutao Long,Fanduo Meng,Feiyue Ge,Xinwei Kang,Jianjun Zhu,Luyan Zhang,Liang Qiao,Yongshan Ma,Xuewu Zhu

Conventional polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are intrinsically limited by the permeance-selectivity trade-off. Herein, we developed a co-solvent microenvironment engineering strategy to regulate interfacial polymerization (IP). Introducing isopropanol (IPA) into the organic phase creates a PIP-IPA-TMC reaction microenvironment, which reduces the water/oil interfacial tension, modifies the local solvation environment, and regulates the trans -interfacial transport of piperazine (PIP). Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that hydrogen-bonding interactions between PIP and IPA retard PIP monomer diffusion. Consequently, IP shifts toward a more diffusion-regulated polycondensation regime, promoting the formation of a three-dimensional pore architecture with a highly interconnected free-volume network (accessible surface area up to 7156.40 m 2  cm −3 ) and enhanced surface negativity. Benefiting from this synergistic structural synergy, the optimized membrane achieved a water permeance of 16.3 L m −2  h −1 ·bar −1 , representing a 2.3-fold increase over the pristine PA membrane, while maintaining a high Na 2 SO 4 rejection of 98.95%. Tests using real surface water further demonstrated selective fractionation by enhancing dissolved organic matter removal while retaining a considerable fraction of essential mineral ions. This work provides a co-solvent-based interfacial regulation strategy for improving the permeance-selectivity balance of PA NF membranes for advanced water purification.

A defect-complementary strategy for breaking the trade-off between gas permeance and catalytic activity in SiC catalytic membranes

Xiangsen Xu,Songyu Liu,Yajing Wu,Yiqing Zeng,Feng Zhang,Zhaoxiang Zhong,Weihong Xing

Silicon carbide (SiC) catalytic membranes are promising for the simultaneous removal of NO and particulate matter from industrial flue gas, but catalyst-induced pore narrowing creates a trade-off between gas permeance and catalytic activity. Herein, we focus on pore-structure predesign and propose a defect-complementary strategy integrating particle-penetration suppression with catalyst-induced pore regulation. Large SiC particles were used to fabricate an enlarged-pore membrane without an intermediate layer, preventing particle penetration into the support and simplifying preparation. Subsequent controlled loading of VCeTi catalyst narrowed the enlarged pores to the desired size while introducing NH 3 -SCR functionality. This complementary pore-design strategy achieved high gas permeance and high catalytic activity by offsetting the initially enlarged pores with the catalyst-induced pore-narrowing effect, thereby breaking the permeance–activity trade-off. The optimized V/SiC-N50 catalytic membrane exhibited an average pore size of 9.9 μm and achieved 26% higher gas permeance than the conventionally prepared V/SiC-W40 membrane, together with over 90% NO removal efficiency at 250–430 °C and 99.99% PM 2.5 filtration efficiency. Moreover, the strategy was successfully extended to tubular catalytic membranes, demonstrating its scale-up potential. In summary, this work provides a novel strategy for fabricating high-performance SiC catalytic membranes and establishes a design paradigm extendable to other fields.

MXene-based composite forward osmosis (FO) membrane intercalated by halloysite nanotubes with superior water permeance and dye desalination performance

Hongdan Wu,Ming Li,Yehao Zhao,Zhihui Zhou,Shaoqiang Hua,Jian Zhang

MXene two-dimensional (2D) laminate membranes have attracted many researchers in the field of membrane separation due to its adjustable interlayer spacing. However, MXene 2D laminate membranes has been inability to achieve dye desalination due to simultaneous rejection of both dyes and salts in salt-containing dye. The looser MXene/C-HNTs composite forward osmosis (FO) membrane was successfully prepared via vacuum filtering, in which halloysite nanotubes modified with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (C-HNTs) and MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) nanosheets were self-assembled by electrostatic interactions. The insertion of C-HNTs effectively increased the interlayer spacing and enhanced the compression resistance of the composite membranes. With a mass ratio of 1:3 between Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and C-HNTs, the composite membrane's pure water flux was raised to 191.4 L/(m 2 ·h). The insertion of C-HNTs not only enabled the composite membrane to keep a superior dye rejection rate (CR rejection rate >99%), but also effectively reduced the rejection rate of monovalent salt (NaCl <5%) and divalent salt (<13% and <10% for Na 2 SO 4 and MgSO 4 , respectively).

In situ conversion of ZnO to ZIF-8 in polyimide for ultra-high permeance organic solvent nanofiltration mixed matrix membranes

Yidan Ding,Mengjiao Xia,Jian Yu,Erqiao Chen,Congcong Zhou,Liguo Shen,Yang Jiao,Yanchao Xu,Hongjun Lin

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporating ZIF-8 nanoparticles through non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) hold great potential in the organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) field, but their advancement and application have been significantly hindered by ZIF-8’s instability of ZIF-8 in aqueous conditions and major interfacial incompatibilities with polymers. This study presents an approach to overcome these obstacles by initially forming crosslinked ZnO/polyimide (PI) MMMs via NIPS and crosslinking processes, followed by in-situ conversion of ZnO to ZIF-8 within the membrane structure. This method prevents direct contact of ZIF-8 with water, optimizes the interface between ZIF-8 and the polymer, and modulates the pore structure of the membranes. The resulting crosslinked ZIF-8/PI membranes exhibit an ultra-high ethanol permeance of 42.7 L m⁻ 2  h⁻ 1  bar⁻ 1 and a 99.5 % rejection of Rose Bengal dye, surpassing the performance of all state-of-the-art OSN MMMs to our knowledge. Additionally, these membranes also demonstrate excellent separation performance in harsh solvents such as DMF and NMP. The findings of this study not only significantly advance the development of OSN membranes but also offer insights into the optimization of membrane fabrication techniques, setting a new benchmark for the design of high-performance OSN membranes.

Ultrahigh-permeance polyamide thin-film composite membranes enabled by interfacial polymerization on a macro-porous substrate toward organic solvent nanofiltration

Jin-Bo Li,Cheng-Ye Zhu,Bian-Bian Guo,Chang Liu,Jia-Hui Xin,Chao Zhang,Jian Wu,Lin Zhang,Hao-Cheng Yang,Zhi-Kang Xu

Organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes have become a powerful separation platform in a myriad of chemical and pharmaceutical fields owing to their superior merits in high separation efficiency and low energy consuming. Despite extensive progress in exploiting polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membranes for OSN, they are heavily limited by inferior solvent permeability, especially when using conventional low-porous polyimide as TFC substrate. Herein, we report a facile substrate engineering strategy to leverage macro-porous Nylon66 microfiltration membrane to replace the conventional low-porous polyimide substrates for fabricating TFC membranes by interfacial polymerization, enabling high and robust solvent permeability during OSN. Distinct from conventional polyimide, Nylon66 substrates take advantage of their high porosity, macro-porous size and excellent hydrophilicity to realize more monomers storage and uniform monomers distribution, allowing to create crumpled and defect-free polyamide layers. With this method, the polyamide TFC membranes show a 2.1-fold increase in ethanol permeance (up to 16.0 L h −1  m −2 bar −1 ) meanwhile possessing 98 % rejection of dye, surpassing the most reported TFC membranes. We also demonstrate that the TFC membranes exhibit excellent long-term stability in both polar and non-polar solvent, as well as hold huge promise in the precise separation of dye mixture, pharmaceutical ingredient, and catalyst.

MXene/poly(ethylene glycol) mixed matrix membranes with excellent permeance for highly efficient separation of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4

Wenjia Luo,Zhenhua Niu,Peng Mu,Jian Li

Membrane separation systems have received extensive attention in the field of gas separation due to its low cost, high-efficiency and eco-friendly advantages. However, it is till challenging to break through the trade-off effect for a highly efficient membrane separation process. Herein, a high-performance CO 2 -philic MXene/PEG mixed matrix membrane is prepared by a simple vacuum filtration process. Excellent CO 2 permeance and selectivity in separation of the CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 is shown for the as-prepared MXene/PEG (600) mixed matrix membrane because of CO 2 -philic property of the PEG and the nanochannels of the MXene . In permeation experiment, exceptional CO 2 permeance of 1626.99 GPU and ideal selectivity of 32.18 for CO 2 /N 2 and 27.84 for CO 2 /CH 4 , is exhibited, respectively, for 25 wt% MXene/PEG (600) mixed matrix membrane. This study provides a new strategy for design and fabrication of the CO 2 -philic MXene-based membrane with highly efficient separation of the CO 2 from natural gas and flue gas.

Amidoxime-functionalized polymer of intrinsic microporosity (AOPIM-1)-based thin film composite membranes with ultrahigh permeance for organic solvent nanofiltration

Yehao Jin,Qiangqiang Song,Na Xie,Weigang Zheng,Jing Wang,Junyong Zhu,Yatao Zhang

Advanced organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes with high permeance and stability are highly needed in petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. Recently, polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) have attracted significant attention for the development of advanced membranes, because of their high porosity and solution processability. In this study, a thin film composite membrane based on an amidoxime-functionalized PIM (AOPIM-1) was prepared by spin coating followed by solvent activation. The activation approach could dramatically improve the solvent permeance of the membrane without compromising its rejection performance. The changes in porosity of the AOPIM-1 layer before and after activation were confirmed by positron annihilation Doppler spectroscopy. The optimum membrane exhibited an impressively high ethanol permeance of 15.5 L m −2  h −1 bar −1 , nearly one orders of magnitude higher than that of Starmem240 (a commercial polyimide-based OSN membrane) with a comparable rejection of Rose Bengal (MW 1017 Da). In addition, the present membrane exhibited outstanding stability in polar solvents and a remarkably high rejection of active pharmaceutical ingredients (vitamin B12) from ethanol. This work could provide a new avenue for developing highly permeable OSN membranes and is expected to stimulate the use of PIM membranes in OSN applications.
