Charge symmetry breaking stabilizes high-valence Ru sites for proton exchange membrane electrolysis

Zhu Sheng,Dong Chen,Shen Yu,Gong Shuai-Qi,Qu Ming-Rong,Zhang Xiao-Long,Liu Rui-Qi,Yan Wen-Sheng,Li He-Xing,Min Yu-Lin,Gao Min-Rui,Yu Shu-Hong

High-valence Ru n + ( n  > 4) sites possess high catalytic activity to negotiate the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis, but undergo thermodynamic instability. The synthesis of Ru-based catalysts with stable high-valence Ru sites remains challenging. Here, we present an interstitial nitrogen doping strategy to trigger a charge symmetry breaking for the stabilization of high-valence Ru sites in ruthenium dioxide. The resultant catalyst requires a low overpotential of 195 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and operates stably with negligible activity drop over 1000 hours. In-depth electrochemical characterizations combined with in-situ spectroscopic studies reveal that the presence of high-valence Ru sites accelerates the charge accumulation for the chemical bond making/breaking and water dissociation at the reaction interface, leading to enhanced kinetics. Additionally, the strong Ru-N electronic coupling and weak Ru-O covalency suppress the Ru oxidative dissolution and lattice oxygen oxidation, accounting for the long-term stability. A realistic water electrolysis cell assembled with this catalyst at the anode achieves 1000 mA cm -2 at 1.79 volts and can run steadily for at least 300 hours.

Calcium-mediated calreticulin-IRE1α interaction drives dynamic fluctuation of IRE1α activity under chronic endoplasmic reticulum stress

Jianwei Cao,Xudong Zhao,Yunxin Xu,Chen Yang,Yazhen Huo,Ting Li,Wenjia Gu,Lei Wang,Youjun Wang,Likun Wang

The unfolded protein response (UPR) triggered by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress can be both pro-survival or pro-apoptotic, depending on the duration and intensity of the stress. ER stress under (patho)physiological conditions can last for long time, yet the dynamic regulation of the UPR under prolong ER stress is largely unknown. Here, we characterized the UPR dynamics during pharmacologically induced long-term ER stress and revealed an “up-down-up” fluctuation pattern of the IRE1α signal in various types of cells. A fluctuation of the calreticulin-IRE1α interaction intensity orchestrates dynamic regulation of IRE1α activity, which negatively correlates with the intensity of the interaction between IRE1α and BIP, a known suppressor of IRE1α. The calreticulin-IRE1α interaction is negatively affected by Ca 2+ concentration, which showed “down-up-down” pattern in the ER lumen over time. Furthermore, a circadian rhythmic fluctuation of calreticulin-IRE1α interaction intensity is observed in mouse liver, accompanied by oscillation of IRE1α phosphorylation level at regular physiological conditions. Our study suggests a calcium-mediated, calreticulin-driven IRE1α activity fluctuation, representing an intermediate status that the cell adopts to cope with chronic ER stress that may exist under both pathophysiological and physiological conditions. Ca 2+ concentration-mediated, seesawed interactions between IRE1α and two chaperones, CALR and BIP, were discovered to drive IRE1α activity fluctuation that was observed under chronic endoplasmic reticulum stress and physiological circadian conditions.

Rational synthesis of a new Haldane chain compound by predicted pressure-induced phase modification

Tan Pengfei,Wu Muwei,Zhu Chuanhui,Chang Yuting,Zhao Mei-Huan,Xia Tao,Cai Guo-Hong,Ni Xiao-Sheng,Zhao Shuang,Yang Jinjin,Huang Chenhui,Han Tao,Deng Zheng,Wang Junfeng,Deng Sihao,He Lunhua,Lu Chengliang,Sun Junliang,Yao Dao-Xin,Li Man-Rong

The realization and discovery of novel topological quantum states is a fascinating intersection field of solid-state chemistry, materials science, and condensed matter physics. As a typical model of symmetry-protected topological states, the Haldane phase oxides are still rare to date. Here, we report the precise synthesis of a new predicted Haldane chain compound, the high-pressure (HP) BaNi 2 V 2 O 8 polymorph, by pressure-induced phase modification. The collective experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations emphasize the nonmagnetic ground state of the Haldane phase with a field-induced quantum magnetic transition at a critical field of 16.8 T at 1.6 K. Notably, Mg-doped BaNi 2 V 2 O 8 exhibits a spin-glass-like state, which is in sharp contrast to the antiferromagnetic ordering observed in the Mg-doped A Ni 2 V 2 O 8 ( A  = Pb and Sr). Further spin Hamiltonian calculations and experimental investigations on the prototypical family of A Ni 2 V 2 O 8 ( A  = Ba and Sr) and derivatives unveil that the variation of the inter- and intra-chain magnetic couplings induced by the symmetry change may be crucial in determining the ground state of the Haldane phase destabilized by the substitution ions. The discoveries of this new HP-BaNi 2 V 2 O 8 Haldane phase provide a local-structure-based new platform to intensify the understanding of quantum phase transition in the Haldane system.

Rhodamine B-Modified Carbon Dots with EDTA Masking Strategy for Selective Detection of Cu²⁺

Xiaoli Wu,Jiajia Du,Dandan Zhang,Jiayi Chen,Xi Yang,Xiaonan Liu

Iron(III) and copper(II) ions are ubiquitous in the environment, posing potential risks to the environment and human health, which urgently demands rapid detection methods. In this study, a ratiometric fluorescent probe was developed by integrating biomass-based carbon dots with rhodamine B (RhB) for the rapid and accurate detection of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺. Under normal conditions, the strong coordination ability of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ enables them to rapidly occupy the active sites on the surface of carbon dots (CDs), resulting in rapid fluorescence changes. RhB provides a stable reference signal and achieves self-calibrated dual-emission output, thereby reducing matrix and environmental interferences. To address the coexistence of Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺ in practical detection, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was introduced as a selective masking agent, which preferentially forms a stable complex with Fe³⁺. This reduces the signal interference of Fe³⁺ in low-concentration systems and realizes highly selective detection of Cu²⁺. In the detection of Cu²⁺ in actual water samples, the probe exhibits high sensitivity (4.91 µM) and favorable accuracy with recoveries ranging from 97.3% to 99.5%, demonstrating strong reliability in complex samples. This study not only provides a green and sensitive method for Cu²⁺ detection, but also presents an effective strategy for resolving specific detection issues in complex matrices using classical masking agents.

Microinterventional in-sensor computing system for real-time metabolic health assessment

Fan Peidi,Zhang Haitao,Su Xiaoyu,Yang Xuewei,Liu Ying,Pan Shuangfeng,Li Xunjia,Ying Yibin,Pan Yuxiang,Ping Jianfeng

Microneedle biosensors enable dynamic monitoring of interstitial fluid biomarkers, but remain constrained by sensing interface susceptibility to motion artifacts and the prohibitive energy consumption of wireless cloud-based processing. Here, we report a bio-inspired, self-anchoring microinterventional in-sensor computing system. By leveraging a starfish-inspired suction cup-microneedle self-anchoring mechanism, the system effectively counteracts microneedle extrusion, attenuating signal fluctuations by 38-fold and enhancing signal intensity by up to 5.49-fold compared to conventional planar devices. Crucially, the high-fidelity data acquisition reduces the computational burden, enabling the deployment of a lightweight algorithm (43 KB) on a coin-sized embedded circuit, achieving 98.68% diagnostic accuracy and a 120-h battery life via local closed-loop feedback. Validation in a porcine model confirmed the system’s capability to capture continuous biochemical dynamics. This co-design of a robust biomimetic interface and lightweight deep learning paves the way for next-generation wearables capable of performing high-fidelity, on-chip metabolic risk stratification in dynamic daily settings.

2, 2’-Diselanediyldiethylamine-modified hyaluronic acid/dialdehyde chitosan injectable hydrogel: design, fabrication and fresh-keeping application for postharvest grapes

Yang Xue,Jiang Shasha,Ren Tong,Zhuo Meng,Hou Yanwei,Su Yingyu,Hou Xueyan,Yan Huijuan

Fruit preservation and shelf life extension rely heavily on effective materials, but current methods often fail to combine key functions like antibacterial protection and freshness retention. This study aims to develop a multifunctional hydrogel to address the existing challenges in grape preservation. The hydrogel, termed as CS- se -HA gel , was fabricated via Schiff base reactions between dialdehyde chitosan (DACS) and 2,2’-diselanediyldiethanamine (DD)-conjugated hyaluronic acid (DDHA) polymers. Studies found that CS- se -HA gel possessed an outstanding swelling ratio, low cytotoxicity, good water retention, and excellent mechanical properties. Besides, it also showed potent antibacterial activity, which prevented the treated grapes from rotting and wrinkling. Significantly, CS- se -HA gel also decreased water loss from grapes and maintained their total soluble solid (TSS) and pH stability, prolonging the shelf life of harvested grapes at ambient temperature. Therefore, it could be speculated that CS- se -HA gel has potential applications for fruit preservation in the food industry.

Polyethyleneimine-modified alkali lignin semi-interpenetrating polymer network for oil/water separation

Zhang Kangwei,Lv Wenjun,Zhang Yuxuan,Chen Guangli,Gao Xiaofang,Huang Yanfen

Oily wastewater is produced throughout the petroleum extraction process, from drilling and oil production to collection and transportation. Such effluent comprises not only large amounts of free and emulsified oil, but also a variety of poisonous and hazardous compounds. When these compounds are released without appropriate treatment, contaminating drinking water sources via groundwater penetration, and causing irreparable damage to ecosystems and human health it is difficult to be reversed. With global petroleum demand rising and environmental standards tightening, the scientific and efficient treatment of such oily wastewater to achieve the dual objectives of ‘compliant discharge’ and ‘resource recovery’ has emerged as an urgent global challenge for both the petroleum industry and the environmental sectors worldwide. Separation of components in oily wastewater presents a pressing challenge, extending beyond mere oil-water separation to encompass the isolation of other harmful constituents. Developing an economical, environmentally sound, and highly efficient membrane remains a significant technical hurdle. This study presents a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel with oil-water separation functionality, fabricated from the renewable green resource alkanolamine (AL). Lignin was first modified using polyethyleneimine (PEI), followed by incorporation of semi-IPN polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) linear molecules, after adding SiO 2 nanoparticles, the resulting semi-IPN hydrogel exhibited remarkable superhydrophilicity (OCA = 156°) and strong chemical stability. This superhydrophilic behaviour was attributed to low surface energy and the roughness imparted by the SiO 2 nanoparticles. With a stable average efficiency of 99%, it overcomes the difficulty of attaining stable separation across various oil phases while retaining continuously high separation efficiency. Salt-resistant swelling behavior and methylene blue adsorption performance of chitosan-modified poly(acrylic acid-acrylamide-sodium styrene sulfonate) superabsorbent resin

Jv Xiaoxuan,Liu Xiangchi,Liu Ailing,Liu Baijun,Zhang Mingyao

In response to the escalating global water pollution problem, a three-dimensional crosslinked poly(acrylic acid-acrylamide-sodium styrene sulfonate)/chitosan (P(AA-AM-SSS)/CTS) composite superabsorbent resin was successfully synthesized via inverse suspension polymerization. A series of systematic experiments were performed to elucidate the effects of initiator dosage, crosslinker content, and monomer composition on the network structure, swelling behavior, and adsorption performance. Through controlled optimization of the polymerization conditions, a structurally stable three-dimensional polymer network was established. Under optimized conditions, the composite resin exhibited a high swelling capacity of 1233.7 g/g in deionized water and 137.3 g/g in saline solution, demonstrating effective enhancement of both water absorbency and salt tolerance. Meanwhile, the material maintained favorable water retention at 60 °C, achieving a water retention rate of approximately 85%, and displays outstanding reswelling capability. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a residual mass of 42.9% at 600 °C, indicating enhanced thermal stability. In addition, adsorption experiments toward the cationic dye methylene blue were systematically conducted under varying adsorbent dosage, contact time, temperature, and initial dye concentration. The optimized composite achieved a maximum adsorption capacity of 874.6 mg/g under the studied conditions. Therefore, the incorporation of SSS and CTS into the superabsorbent resin network contributes to the improvement of water absorbency, salt tolerance, water retention, and dye adsorption performance, indicating the potential applicability of the composite in wastewater treatment. Ag-modified S-scheme Bi2O3/g-C3N4 heterojunction for visible-light photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin

Zuo Guangling,Ye Hongyong,Du Jia,Ding Xin

A ternary Ag/Bi 2 O 3 /g-C 3 N 4 (Ag/BO/CN) photocatalyst was fabricated through a combined solvothermal and photochemical reduction approach for the degradation of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP). Upon illumination with simulated sunlight, the optimized Ag/BO/CN composite efficiently degraded CIP, resulting in near-complete (98.14%) removal within 100 min. This remarkable property is attributed to a synergetic interaction between the Ag surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and the S-scheme heterojunction (between BO and CN). In-situ XPS analysis and work function ( Φ ) calculations confirmed the S-scheme charge migration pathway. In this scheme, an internal electric field (IEF) prompts the reunification of less-reactive charge carriers, thereby selectively retaining the highly reductive electrons (e − ) in the conduction band (CB) of CN and the strongly oxidative holes (h + ) in the valence band (VB) of BO. Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy identified superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) as the primary reactive intermediates. Moreover, the catalyst shows considerable promise for practical deployment, as evidenced by its excellent stability over four consecutive cycles and sustained degradation performance across various real water systems. In-situ polymerization-mediated glycan density measurement on extracellular vesicle surface for acute myeloid leukemia diagnosis

Wu Xingjie,Long Weifeng,Zhang Litao,Luo Cong,Hu Xiaoxia,Tao Ling,Xiong Jie,Shen Xiangchun,Zhao Haitao

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as promising circulating biomarkers for diverse pathologies, yet clinical adoption remains limited due to inter-patient variability in blood EV concentrations, which introduces inconsistent biomarker signals and reduces diagnostic reliability. To address this, we developed an in-situ dopamine polymerization method for precise glycan density quantification on EVs expressing a specific membrane protein. EV membrane proteins were labeled using streptavidin-horseradish peroxidase-conjugated aptamers, while surface lipids and glycans were simultaneously tagged with fluorescent cholesterol and lectin, respectively. Controlled dopamine polymerization spatially restricted fluorescence quenching to EV membranes, enabling glycan density calculation via attenuation profiles of cholesterol- and lectin-bound fluorophores. The method was miniaturized into a microfluidic platform for rapid (< 1 h), wash-free point-of-care analysis. In 47 clinical specimens (16 patients with acute myeloid leukemia, 15 patients with benign hematological diseases, and 16 healthy donors), glycan density normalization reduced inter-patient variability compared to absolute measurements. Multi-lectin analysis of CD133 + EV glycan density achieved superior diagnostic accuracy (AUC = 0.904) in distinguishing acute myeloid leukemia from benign hematological diseases, outperforming direct glycan quantification. By integrating surface biophysical normalization, this platform enhances EV biomarker consistency, providing a rapid, blood-based diagnostic tool with clinical translatability for acute myeloid leukemia. Efficient Loading of Rabeprazole Sodium via Porous Anion Exchange Resin for Enteric Delivery

Liu Hongfei,Cai Luyuan,Dou Yutian,Feng Yingshu,Firempong Caleb Kesse,Zhang Guoqing,He Haibing

Rabeprazole sodium (RAB), a widely used proton pump inhibitor for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), faces limitations in administration to pediatric and dysphagic patients due to the swallowing difficulties posed by conventional oral solid formulations. To overcome these issues, this study developed a pediatric-friendly oral RAB formulation based on a novel anion exchange resin (AER). The synthesized AER exhibited a regular spherical morphology, high porosity, and uniform particle size distribution. RAB was efficiently loaded via ion exchange to form RAB-loaded AER complexes (RAB@AER), achieving a 1.63-fold higher drug loading capacity than that of conventional resins. RAB@AER were subsequently coated with Eudragit L100 using an emulsion-solvent evaporation method, yielding microcapsules consisting of RAB-loaded AER coated by L100 (RAB@AER@L100). In vitro release studies confirmed the enteric protection of the microcapsules, with negligible drug release in acidic medium (pH 1.2) and sustained release under neutral conditions (pH 6.8). The RAB@AER@L100 enteric suspension was developed by blending the microcapsules with suitable excipients, requiring reconstitution with water before oral administration. Pharmacokinetic evaluation in rats revealed that the reconstituted suspension accelerated drug absorption (T max  = 2 h vs. 3 h for commercial capsules) and achieved a higher peak concentration (C max  = 3.19 vs. 2.82 μg/mL), with a comparable area under the plasma concentration–time curve (AUC 0-12 h ). This RAB formulation provides an alternative strategy to enhance swallowing safety and dosing convenience in vulnerable patient. Fast-kinetic multivalent ion storage enabled by multiscale structural modulation in two-dimensional magnetic materials

Yang Jinlin,Wu Daoxiong,Ge Yanzeng,Li Jing,Zhang Hui,Tianyu Qiu,Tian Xinlong

Rechargeable multivalent ion batteries represent a promising avenue for high-energy-density storage; however, their practical application is plagued by sluggish multivalent ion diffusion kinetics in the host materials. Here we propose a multiscale structural modulation strategy based on two-dimensional magnetic materials to enhance the multivalent ion storage kinetics. Using two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ti 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 2 nanosheets as a model system, we show that Fe-induced spin-polarized interactions reduce the surface migration barrier of the multivalent ions, improving the microscopic transport kinetics; meanwhile, the ferromagnetism enables magnetic-field-induced assembly of vertically aligned, low-tortuosity nanosheet electrodes that shorten the mesoscopic diffusion pathways. This strategy accelerates multivalent-ion migration, enabling nonaqueous Mg- and Al-ion batteries to achieve specific powers of ~18.2 and 15.7 kW kg −1 based on electrodes, nearly two orders of magnitude higher than those of state-of-the-art multivalent batteries. This strategy can be extended to various two-dimensional magnetic materials, thereby providing a potentially universal methodology in designing fast-kinetic multivalent-ion batteries.
