Efficient hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds and lignin pyrolysis oil by core-shell Ru@SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst

Yongyuan Deng,Yichao Ye,Tao Yin,Zhipeng Tian,Chao Wang,Ying Chen,Zhi Yang,Junling Tu,Riyang Shu

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a common refinery process to convert oxygen-containing lignin pyrolysis oil into high-quality hydrocarbon liquid fuels. In this work, we prepared a core-shell Ru@SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst and employed it in the HDO of phenolic compounds and lignin pyrolysis oil. The unique core-shell structure of the catalyst reduces the size of Ru metal particles, which significantly improves the hydrogenation catalytic activity. The high surface area, large pore size, and large pore volume of the SiO 2 shell provide a favorable environment for the substrate transfer during the reactions, meanwhile the doped Al 2 O 3 introduces a substantial number of acid sites for the catalysis of deoxygenation. The synergistic effect between the metal sites and acid sites greatly promotes the HDO reaction efficiency. Under mild conditions of 220 °C and 1 MPa H 2 , Ru@SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved a guaiacol conversion of 99.9% and a cyclohexane selectivity of 99.9%. This catalyst also demonstrates an outstanding stability, with catalytic activity little loss after 6 recycles. Furthermore, an efficient HDO performance was obtained in the upgrade of other phenolic compounds and lignin pyrolysis oil. At the temperature of 240 °C, the content of hydrocarbons in lignin pyrolysis oil increased from 15.4% to 92.7%. These results indicate that Ru@SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 holds significant potential for the efficient HDO refinery, providing a promising avenue for the future biofuel development.

Zhihong Xie,Yufang Li,Hang Bai,Wei Wang,Honglie Shen,Long Wang,Andi Chen,Jingzhe Zhang,Jinjie Zheng

Enhancing the electrical properties of Sb 2 Se 3 thin films through elemental doping is a crucial strategy to improve its potential applications in photodetectors. In this study, thin films of Co-doped Sb 2 Se 3 were fabricated through electrochemical deposition. When the doping concentration reached x=0.05, Sb 2 Se 3 thin films were effectively fabricated exhibiting [ hk 1] orientation and a large average grain size. Consequently, the electrical characteristics of the films were improved. Following the incorporation of an Al 2 O 3 barrier layer and CdCl 2 treatment of CdS layer, the photodetector utilizing a thin film of Sb 2 Se 3 with x=0.05 demonstrates a significant response within the visible to near-infrared spectrum under 0 bias conditions. The optimal results were achieved at a wavelength of 635 nm, where the dark current (I dark ) was measured at 5.9 × 10 −7 mA, responsivity (R) at 92 mA/W, detectivity (D*) at 2.11 × 10 12 Jones, and the fitting ideal factor (θ) was determined to be 0.959. The selectivity within the visible wavelength range, coupled with the excellent values of D* and θ, position the device as having significant potential for various applications.

Shaoxiang Xu,Meihua Zhu,Pengming Huang,Shengao Zheng,Yujie Qiao,Yuan Liang,Xiangshu Chen,Hidetoshi Kita

Nano-size titanium silicalites is difficult to be separate from the reaction solution, lamellar and homogeneous Ti-MWW zeolites are successfully formed a dense zeolite layers on α-Al 2 O 3 pellets by secondary hydrothermal synthesis in this study. Seeded crystals concentration and titanium source have significantly influences on the morphology, thickness and titanium active sites of Ti-MWW zeolites. Doping NH 4 F in the precursor synthesis solution could conducive to prepare macroscopically and anatase-free Ti-MWW zeolites layer on the outside of α-Al 2 O 3 pellets, and the thickness of the Ti-MWW zeolites layer is ca. 1 mm. Besides, catalytic performance of the supported Ti-MWW zeolites are significantly improved by NH 4 F. A fixed-bed reactor with the supported Ti-MWW zeolites are applied to catalyze phenol hydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide efficiently, and reaction time and temperature, amount of the supported Ti-MWW zeolites have obvious effects on the phenol conversion and dihydroxybenzene selectivity. When the actual mass of Ti-MWW zeolites to volume of reaction solution is only 10 g/L, the relative phenol conversion and dihydroxybenzene selectivity are 46.45% and 92.72% at 65 °C after 3 h, respectively.

Study on improving NH3 oxidation reaction performance of Pt/Al2O3 supported catalysts through optimization of porous structures

Zhenhua Ji,Shijing Xie,Hao Chen,Peng Zhang,Ding Luo,Yixuan Chai,Zhuo Wang

Aiming at the key issues of current vehicle Ammonia Slip Catalyst (ASC) catalysts, such as poor low-temperature activity, high noble metal content, and narrow operating window, this study aims to construct multi-scale pore structures in Al 2 O 3 supports of supported catalysts to regulate selective catalytic oxidation of NH 3 (NH 3 -SCO) across broad temperature ranges and space velocities by improving convective diffusion, conduction, migration, and adsorption processes within catalyst voids. Characterization results show that a series of catalyst supports with different pore structures was successfully prepared using different templates. Pt was loaded using an optimized supported catalyst preparation method. Meanwhile, the coating amount of the prepared catalyst on cordierite monolith substrates was significantly reduced, and NH 3 -SCO performance tests were conducted. The results indicate that single mesoporous structures have limited regulation on the intrinsic activity of catalysts, while macroporous structures enhance the influence of desorption and void diffusion of gas-phase reactants and products on catalytic reactions. In the presence of macroporous structures, the promotional effect of mesopores on NH 3 -SCO reactions is enhanced. Among all catalysts, hierarchical porous catalysts with larger pore diameters and better interconnected pore structures exhibit NH₃ conversion rates exceeding 99 % across the full temperature range of 200℃ - 500℃, with NH 3 concentrations below the regulatory limit of 10 ppm throughout the operating window. Macroporous structures and their pore diameters play a dominant role in regulating NH 3 -SCO reactions, particularly with stronger regulation at low temperatures. Increasing space velocity enhances the diffusion rate of NH 3 gas molecules while amplifying the influence of pore structure regulation on catalysts. Notably, compared with traditional Pt/Al 2 O 3 , pore structure regulation does not significantly increase the generation of N 2 O while effectively enhancing the catalytic activity of the ASC catalyst.

Low-temperature demethoxylation pathways and solvent-driven hydrodeoxygenation for guaiacol upgrading catalyzed by anaerobically synthesized Ru/Al2O3

Peng Gao,Min Zheng,Mengni Zhou,Yiwei Ma,Guirong Bao,Chengyan Wang

The valorization and toxicity reduction of phenolic substances are critical challenges for achieving green and sustainable development in the petroleum, coal, and biomass industries. This study investigated the phenolic model compound guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation over Ru/Al 2 O 3 catalysts, demonstrating that synthesis within an anaerobic glovebox significantly enhances catalytic activity compared to ambient synthesis. Four solvents (ethanol, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, and n-dodecane) were evaluated for their impact on guaiacol conversion and product distribution. Experimental results demonstrated that non-polar n-dodecane achieved 100 % guaiacol conversion and 92.8 % cyclohexane selectivity, attributed to weak catalyst-solvent interactions verified by first-principles calculations. Reaction optimization enabled > 90 % yields of 2-methoxycyclohexanol, cyclohexanol, and cyclohexane. Crucially, a novel low-temperature demethoxylation pathway via the intermediate 2-methoxy-1-cyclohexen-1-ol was identified through quantum chemistry calculations, offering a strategy to enhance cyclohexanol production. Kinetic analysis revealed apparent activation energies of 55 kJ/mol (demethoxylation) and 72 kJ/mol (dehydroxylation). The catalyst maintained stable performance over five cycles. These findings underscore the critical importance of catalyst synthesis, solvent environment, and reaction control in achieving efficient and selective guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation, offering strategies for green valorization and toxicity reduction of phenols.

Enhancement of CO2 reduction to C2+ products via local microenvironment modulation on Al2O3/Cu in neutral media

Yaqing Hu,Mingxia Zhou,Kunyu Xu,Zihao Yang,Zhaoxia Dong

The electroreduction of carbon dioxide to multi-carbon products (C 2+ ) represents an effective pathway for achieving carbon cycling and high-density renewable energy storage. However, its practical implementation is challenged by excessively high C–C coupling reaction energy barriers and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Modifications to the local microenvironment play a decisive role in the three-phase interface reaction of CO 2 electrocatalytic reduction. Therefore, this study employed an Al 2 O 3 -modified copper catalyst (Al 2 O 3 /Cu) to modulate the local reaction microenvironment, thereby promoting C 2+ formation. Notably, the optimized Al 2 O 3 /Cu catalyst achieved a remarkable C 2+ Faraday efficiency (FE) of 71.3% at −1.33 V vs. RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode; all potentials herein are referenced to RHE) in a neutral electrolyte using a flow cell, significantly outperforming unmodified Cu catalysts. This catalyst also demonstrated excellent catalytic stability, exceeding 56 h. Theoretical calculations and in situ spectroscopic characterization confirmed that introduced Al 2 O 3 species kinetically facilitate water dissociation and proton consumption, which is crucial for maintaining a transient localized high-pH environment under operating conditions. This alkaline microenvironment not only suppresses the HER but also stabilizes the critical Cu 2+ /Cu + active sites against over-reduction, while simultaneously lowering the energy barrier of C–C coupling reactions. This work underscores the critical role of dynamically modulating the localized chemical environment in neutral electrolytes for CO 2 reduction reactions (CO 2 RR), offering novel insights for designing such microenvironments.

Heat Transport during Colloidal Mixture of Water with Al2O3-SiO2 Nanoparticles within Porous Medium: Semi-Analytical Solutions

Hashim,Muhammad Hafeez,Nidhal Ben Khedher,Sayed Mohamed Tag-EIDin,Mowffaq Oreijah

In recent years, energy consumption has become an essential aspect in the manufacturing industry, and low heat transfer is one of the obstacles that affect the quality of the final product. This situation can be managed by suspending nanoparticles into ordinary heat transferring fluid (the base fluid). This newly prepared colloidal suspension has better heat transport capabilities. Keeping such usage of nanofluids in mind, this research was performed to better understand the heat transport characteristics during flow analysis saturated in porous media subject to Al2O3-SiO2/water hybrid nanofluids. This flow problem was generated by a stretching/shrinking surface. The surface of the sheet was under the influence of mass suction and second-order partial slip. The boundary layer flow was formulated in a system of partial differential equations by utilizing basic conservation laws in conjunction with the Tiwari and Das nanofluid model. Then, the appropriate form of the similarity transformation was adapted to transform the model into a system of ordinary differential equations. The built-in function, i.e., the bvp4c function in the MATLAB software, solved the reduced form of the boundary layer model. The novelty of this study lay in the predicting of two different exact and numerical solutions for both the flow and temperature fields. The computed results showed that the medium porosity as well as the nanoparticle volume fraction widened the existence range of the dual solutions. In addition, the investigational output exposed the fact that the temperature fields were significantly enhanced by the higher nanoparticle volume fraction. Moreover, the outcomes of this study showed a superb correlation with existing works. The present results can be utilized in various branches of science and engineering such as the polymer industry and in the treatment of different diseases. Keywords:hybrid nanofluid;stretching/shrinking sheet;dual solutions;semi-analytical solution;porous medium

Probing the Catalytic Roles of Surface Hydroxyls on Ir/Al2O3 in Dissociation and Dry Reforming of Methane

Jialong Dai,Zhiwei Zhao,Fuhou Tian,Xianzhou Wang,Xiaogang Yu,Bo Liu,Dan Yang,Xupeng Zong,Yu Tang,Fei Wei,Yanhui Yang,Yihu Dai

The synergistic catalysis between the active metal site and the oxide support is crucial for catalytic dry reforming of methane (DRM); however, the specific roles of hydroxyl groups at the metal–oxide interface have been particularly elusive. To probe this, Ir/Al2O3 model catalysts (Ir/Al2O3-400R and Ir/Al2O3-650R reduced at 400 and 650 °C, respectively) were constructed with isolated Ir sites but distinct hydroxyl properties. Both catalysts exhibited high activity and coke-resistant stability in long-term DRM reactions at 650 °C. By a combination of structure characterizations, kinetic analyses, and in situ isotopic spectral techniques, their catalytic performances are correlated with the hydroxyl structures. The surface hydroxyls are directly involved in CH4 and CO2 dissociation pathways, and specifically, the triply bridged hydroxyl (μ3-OH), a strong proton donor, cooperates with the Ir metal site to achieve decoupled CH4 dissociation. Beyond this synergistic effect, a complete cycle of hydroxyl conversion and regeneration is integral to the DRM mechanism. These findings offer a mechanistic perspective on the catalytic roles of hydroxyls in CH4 dissociation and dry reforming.

High-entropy R2O3-Y2O3-TiO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 glasses with ultrahigh hardness, Young's modulus, and indentation fracture toughness.

Yongchang Guo,Jianqiang Li,Ying Zhang,Shaowei Feng,Hong Sun

Glasses with high hardness, high Young's modulus, and high fracture toughness become crucial materials which are urgently needed in the protective covers for various electronic displays. Here, a paradigm is presented that the conceptual design of high-entropy materials is adaptable to high performance oxide glasses. We designed the multi-component glass compositions of 18.77R 2 O 3 -4.83Y 2 O 3 -28.22TiO 2 -8.75ZrO 2 -39.43Al 2 O 3 (R = La, Sm, Gd) and elaborated successfully the glassy samples through a containerless solidification process. The as-prepared samples demonstrated the outstanding mechanical and optical properties. The measured hardness, Young's modulus, and indentation fracture toughness of the high-entropy (R = Gd) glass are 12.58 GPa, 177.9 GPa, and 1.52 MPa·m 0.5 , respectively, in which the hardness and Young's modulus exhibit the highest value among the reported oxide glasses. Structural analysis revealed that the excellent mechanical properties are attributed to the large dissociation energies and the high field strength of Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , and ZrO 2 and the complex interaction between atoms caused by high entropy.

Iron based monolithic catalysts supported on Al2O3, SiO2, and TiO2: A comparison for NO reduction with propane

Hao Zhou,MengYao Ge,Shiguo Wu,Bichao Ye,Yaxin Su

The selective catalytic reduction of NO with propane has been investigated with iron based monolithic catalysts supported on alumina, silica, and titania. The catalysts were characterized by N 2 -physisorption, XRD, SEM, XPS, H 2 -TPR, Py-FTIR and in situ DRIFTS technologies. The different supports had a significant influence on specific surface area, surface morphology, lattice oxygen, redox properties and the acid sites, which resulted in differences in the catalytic activity of NO reduction. The C 3 H 8 -SCR performance decreased in the order as Fe/Al 2 O 3 /CM > Fe/SiO 2 /CM > Fe/TiO 2 /CM. Fe/Al 2 O 3 /CM showed the highest activity with a nitrogen oxide conversion of 100% in the presence of oxygen at 500 °C,which is mainly attributed to the good redox properties and the abundant Lewis acid sites. Based on in situ DRIFT studies, the increase of Lewis acid sites will enhance the formation of NO 2 /NO 3 − species and acetate/formate species, then promote the catalytic activity.

Thermodynamic insights into dry reforming of methane over Ni-alloy/Al2O3 hollow fibers via gas adsorption calorimetry

Kun Wang,Huihui Yan,Liping Zhao,Ming Wen,Jing Liu,Peng Zhang,Lian Gao

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) offers a promising route for syngas production while mitigating two greenhouse gases (CH 4 and CO 2 ). However, the surface thermodynamics of reactant adsorption remain elusive due to the lack of quantitative tools. Herein, we synthesize self-supporting hollow Al 2 O 3 nanofibers decorated with Ni, NiCo, and NiCu alloys via blow spinning, eliminating the need for pelletization. Among these, NiCo/Al 2 O 3 exhibits superior activity (85% CH 4 conversion at 800 °C) and coking resistance (0.84 wt% carbon after 50 h). For the first time, we quantify the adsorption enthalpies of CH 4 , CO 2 , and H 2 on these catalysts using gas adsorption calorimetry. Notably, CH 4 —a stable tetrahedral molecule—chemisorbs exothermically on Ni sites at 298 K, with enthalpies of −55.2 (NiCo), −78.2 (NiCu), and −87.5 kJ mol −1 (Ni). A strong structure-enthalpy-activity correlation emerges: overly exothermic adsorption hinders catalytic turnover by stabilizing surface intermediates. This thermodynamic framework provides a lens to rationally design DRM catalysts.

CO2-assisted in situ hydrogen extraction for high conversion dehydrogenation of alcohol over Cu–ZnO–Al2O3 catalyst

Jie Li,Ying Liao,Ming Guo,Yue Pan,Yaqian Li,Xuechao Yang,Yulin Wang,Meiyu Zhang,Mengnan Ma,Xiaobo Chen,Yibin Liu,Hao Yan,Chaohe Yang

Direct dehydrogenation of alcohols to aldehydes is a pivotal transformation in fine chemical synthesis. However, conventional thermal processes often suffer from low efficiency and high energy consumption. Herein, we propose an emerging and sustainable strategy that employs CO 2 -assisted in situ hydrogen extraction to drive the dehydrogenation of alcohols under mild conditions. Specifically, CO 2 as a soft oxidant adsorbs and activates on the Cu–ZnO–Al 2 O 3 composite oxide catalyst surface, generating reactive species (COO*) that selectively abstract hydrogen from the α -C of the alcohol. Combined Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic analysis and density functional theory calculations reveal a higher formation rate of the aldehyde product and the lower activation barrier for the key C–H bond activation process under the CO 2 atmosphere. As a result, the CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation markedly enhances reaction efficiency, achieving a 60.21% conversion of 2-ethylhexanal under a low temperature (240°C), which is nearly twice that observed under the pure N 2 atmosphere. This CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation strategy in this work exhibits a cooperative catalytic pathway that not only enables efficient aldehyde production but also utilizes CO 2 as a chemical resource.
