5-Ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) has been identified as a potential biofuel and fuel additive, for which the production from glucose (the most abundant and inexpensive monosaccharide) in a one-step process would be highly desirable. Here, the synthesis of sulfonic acid-functionalized porous coordination polymers (PCPs) and their application as catalysts for EMF synthesis are reported. PCP(Cr)-BA (PCP material with Cr3+ ions and H2BDC-SO3H linkers) and PCP(Cr)-NA (PCP material with Cr3+ ions and H2NDC(SO3H)2 linkers) materials containing both Cr3+ sites and Brønsted-acidic –SO3H sites were prepared. The morphology, pore structure, acidity, chemical composition, and thermal stability of the two functionalized PCP(Cr) catalysts were analyzed by systematic characterization. The catalysts featured a porous morphology and dual Cr3+ and –SO3H sites, which enabled the cascade conversion of glucose to EMF. PCP(Cr)-BA exhibited higher performance than PCP(Cr)-NA with an EMF yield of 23.1% in the conversion of glucose at 140 °C after 22 h in an ethanol/water system. In addition, the as-prepared catalyst exhibited a high stability in the current catalytic system for EMF production from glucose with a constant catalytic activity in a four-run recycling test without an intermediate regeneration step.

A subtle flower-like MIL-125-NH 2 @BiOI was fabricated by a facile solvothermal method for simultaneously eliminating Cr(VI)/tetracycline mixed pollutants under visible light . The strong interaction between amino in MIL-125-NH 2 and Bi 3+ of BiOI promotes the formation of this unique inlaid structure and enables the favorable contact between MIL-125-NH 2 and BiOI, thus accelerating the transfer of charge carriers. Remarkably, MIL-125-NH 2 @BiOI displays a superior activity compared with that of two monomers for the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) and degradation of tetracycline . More significantly, the photocatalytic efficiency can be further boosted in the coexistence of Cr(VI) and tetracycline , which is 1.8 and 1.6 times that of single Cr(VI) and tetracycline, respectively. The synergistic effect between Cr(VI) reduction and tetracycline oxidative degradation can further facilitate the separation of photo-induced electrons and holes, resulting in the improved efficiencies in the Cr(VI)/tetracycline coexistent environment. This work sheds light on that MOF-based photocatalysts possess huge potential for practical environmental remediation.

In materials science, “green” synthesis has gotten a lot of interest as a reliable, long-lasting, and ecofriendly way to make a variety of materials/nanomaterials, including metal/metal oxide nanomaterials . To accommodate various biological materials, green synthesis of metallic nanoparticles has been used (e.g., bacteria, fungi, algae, and plant extracts). In this work, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 was used to biosynthesize palladium nanoparticles (bio Pd) under aerobic conditions for the Cr(VI) bio-reduction. The size and distribution of bio-Pd are controlled by adjusting the ratio of microbial biomass and palladium precursors. The high cell: Pd ratio has the smallest average particle size of 6.33 ± 1.69 nm. And it has the lowest electrocatalytic potential (−0.132 V) for the oxidation of formic acid , which is 0.158 V lower than commercial Pd/C (5%). Our results revealed that the small size and uniformly distributed extracellular bio-Pd could achieve completely catalytic reduction of 200 mg/L Cr(VI) solution within 10 min, while the commercial Pd/C (5%) need at least 45 min. The bio-Pd materials maintain a high reduction during five cycles. Microorganisms play an important role in the whole process, which can fully disperse palladium nanoparticles, completely reduce Cr(VI), and effectively adsorb Cr(III). This work expands our understanding and provides a reference for the design and development of efficient and green bio-Pd catalysts for environmental pollution control under simple and mild conditions.

Research on the rational design of photocatalysts for efficient hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) reduction from Cr(VI)-containing wastewater has attracted widespread attention. In this paper, a novel g-C3N4/C/Fe2O3 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by anchoring g-C3N4 nanosheets onto C/Fe2O3 that was prepared using collagen fiber as the biochar resource following the Fe tanning mechanism to reduce Cr(VI) under artificial solar irradiation. Under the same conditions, the as-prepared g-C3N4/C/Fe2O3 photocatalyst exhibited higher Cr(VI) reduction efficiency than g-C3N4, and the Cr(VI) reduction efficiency increased as Fe content in the g-C3N4/C/Fe2O3 photocatalyst increased. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was primarily ascribed to the formation of an indirect Z-scheme heterojunction between C/Fe2O3 and g-C3N4, which improved the separation efficiency of the photogenerated charge carrier. Furthermore, radical trapping indicated that photoinduced electrons (e–) were the main factor for Cr(VI) reduction. This work provides guidance for high value-added utilization of collagen fiber in constructing efficient light-driven photocatalysts and practical Cr(VI) removal from wastewater.

Z -Scheme Ag/TiO 2 /AgMIL-101(Cr) was prepared by co-doping Ag and TiO 2 with AgMIL-101(Cr) via solvothermal synthesis combined with sol-gel method. Ag and anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles were well dispersed on the surface of AgMIL-101(Cr) with octahedral structure. 5 wt% Ag and 50% TiO 2 co-doping on the AgMIL-101(Cr) (Ag 5 T 50 Ag 5 M) exhibited large specific surface area (346.5 m 2 ·g −1 ) and narrow band gap 2.16 eV. Only 10 min of UV light irradiation resulted in the conversion of nitrate and nitrogen selectivity up to 100% over Ag 5 T 50 Ag 5 M. After 5 cycles of nitrate removal, the conversion of nitrate remained 90% indicating that catalyst had stable reusability. Moreover, instead of formic acid , ofloxacin (OFX) was used as a hole scavenger to evaluate the ability of Ag 5 T 50 Ag 5 M for the nitrate reduction. The result showed that the concentration of OFX was important factor to affect the conversion of nitrate. Based on the above discussion about the characterization and photocatalytic nitrate reduction, combined with the photoluminescence and electrochemical measurement results, the enhanced conversion of nitrate and nitrogen selectivity was reasonably explained. Finally, the route of electron transfer during the three constituents constructed Z -Scheme system and the mechanism of nitrate reduction to nitrogen was presumed.

An ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) was synthesized by radical copolymerization for use in the removal of trace Fe(III) ions from Cr(III)-containing solutions. During the synthesis process, Fe(III) ions, acrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate were employed as the template ions, functional monomer and cross-linker, respectively. The optimal mole ratio of acrylic acid to Fe(III) ions, which significantly affected the adsorption performance, was determined. The maximum static adsorption capacity of the polymer for Fe(III) ions was 114.25 mg g −1 , with a selective factor ( k ) of 492.18 and a relative selective factor ( k′ ) of 50.87 for Fe(III)/Cr(III). The Fe(III) ions removal efficiency could reach 94.43%, leading to a final Fe(III) concentration of 0.053 mg L −1 in the treated solution. After the removal process, the mass ratio of Cr(III) ions to Fe(III) ions was higher than 26, 000:1 in the solution, with an initial mass ratio of Cr(III) to Fe(III) ions of 1500:1.

The adsorption behavior and mechanism of Cr(VI) on different acid-modified UiO-66s (Form-UiO-66 and Ac-UiO-66) were systematically investigated for the first time through a series of characterizations, and theoretical calculations of batch experiments. The characterization results demonstrate that acid-modified UiO-66 exhibited a larger specific surface area than did unmodified UiO-66. In addition, since the regulator (formic acid) of Form-UiO-66 was the stronger competition, the specific surface area of Form-UiO-66 (1138 m 2 g −1 ) was larger than that of Ac-UiO-66 (915 m 2 g −1 ). Under optimal experimental conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) was 243.9 mg g −1 on Form-UiO-66, and 151.52 mg g −1 on Ac-UiO-66, which was far higher than on the reported unmodified UiO-66 (36.4 mg g −1 ). The results of pH testing, zeta potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicate that Cr(VI) ions were fixed to adsorbent surfaces via electrostatic adsorption. Acid-modified UiO-66 increased the surface active site via the increase in its specific surface area to enhance adsorption capacity of Cr(VI). These results indicated that both the surface charge and specific surface area of the adsorbent primarily determined the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity. Acid modified UiO-66 exhibited enhanced adsorption capacity, stability, and regeneration, compared to traditional adsorbents, and these results provide new insights into adsorption by MOFs.

Defect–rich zinc sulfide (ZnS, ZS) was successfully synthesized by the slow release of S source from glutathione (GSH) to coordinate with Zn 2+ at high temperature. Based on this, a novel ZnS/g–C 3 N 4 (ZSCN) heterojunction with high catalytic activity was fabricated through facile in–situ hydrothermal method . The removal rates of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and Cr 6+ for ZSCN–0.05 with the highest catalytic activity under full–spectrum illumination were 13.0, 53.2, 2.0 and 11.6 times of g–C 3 N 4 (CN), and 3.6, 14.8, 1.2 and 3.9 times of ZS, respectively. While, under visible–light illumination, ZSCN–0.075 exhibited the best photodegradation performance for RhB, and the degradation rate was 5.2 and 19.3 times to CN and ZS, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of ZSCN heterojunction could be attributed to the synergistic effect between CN and ZS: ZS with defect-rich enhanced the absorption intensity of ZSCN in the ultraviolet, and CN broaden the spectral response range of ZSCN. Moreover photoluminescence spectrum confirmed that the formation of ZSCN heterojunction could effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and accelerate the electron transfer at its interface.

In this study, we reported that the amino-functionalized organosilica monoliths (amino-OSMs) without need post-synthesis functionalization were prepared in one-step emulsion-templated method. Herein, formation of organosilica skeleton and amino-functionalization of skeleton surface can be simultaneously realized by addition of ammonia. The SEM images showed that the amino-OSMs had a rich pore structures with high adjustability via the simple change in formulation of the emulsions. The successful graft of amino groups on the surface of the organosilica monolith was confirmed by EDS and XPS measurements. The amino-OSMs prepared in this work show the excellent Cr(VI)-removal capacity from the aqueous solution. It is demonstrated that Cr(VI) adsorption on amino-OSM-3 was best described by Langmuir models and pseudo-second-order kinetic. The adsorption efficiency of amino-OSM-3 for Cr(VI) was measured to be 92.8% at room temperature , still remained as high as 85.1% after five recycles as indicative of the good durability. Furthermore, the treated capacity of amino-OSM-3 is 4.25 kg·g −1 with initial concentration of 200 μg·L −1 through the column with a height of 0.5 cm. Correspondingly, Cr(VI) aqueous solution after treatment meet the requirement of the World Health Organization water discharge standard with Cr(VI) concentration as low as 50 μg·L −1 . This work paves the way for the scale-up production of amino-OSMs using emulsion-templated technique for potential application in heavy metal removal .

In this study, CMC–LDH beads were prepared and characterized using SEM, FTIR and TG analysis. The beads were applied for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The effects of adsorbent dosage, initial pH and initial concentration of Cr(VI) solution on Cr(VI) uptake were investigated in detail. Moreover, adsorption isotherms and adsorption kinetic models were employed to analyze the adsorption process, and a preliminary study of the reusability of the adsorbent was performed. The experimental results showed that the CMC–LDH beads could remove Cr(VI) from aqueous solution efficiently. When the initial concentration of the Cr(VI) solution was 100 mg L−1 and the adsorbent dosage was 12 g L−1, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) reached 96.2%. After the CMC–LDH beads were reused 10 times, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) still remained at 89.6%.

Graphical With a sense of selectivity : the metal-organic framework/reduced graphene oxide composite MIL-101(Cr)/rGO is prepared via a simple hydrothermal method. The electrochemical sensor based on the composite shows low detection limits and wide linearity ranges for the determination of metronidazole, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ , and shows excellent selectivity, reproducibility and stability. In this work, a Cr-based MOF (MIL-101(Cr))/reduced grapheme oxide(rGO) electrocatalyst was prepared through a one-pot hydrothermal method. The obtained composite was characterized via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and other standard techniques. Electrochemical methods were adopted to study the electrocatalytic ability of the composite. The results imply that, compared to the single components, it exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of metronidazole and stripping of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . Optimizing the ratio of MIL-101(Cr) and rGO, an electrochemical sensor was prepared using MIL-101(Cr)/rGO-20 and used for detection of metronidazole, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ , respectively. The linear range for metronidazole can be divided in two parts, i. e. from 0.5 to 200 μM and from 200 to 900 μM. The limit of detection is 0.24 μM (S/N=3, n=10). Likewise, it also exhibits a wide linear range from 0.05 to 6.0 μM for the detection of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ . The corresponding detection limits are found to be 5.2 nM and 3.0 nM (S/N=3, n=10), respectively. The proposed sensor also possesses superb selectivity, reproducibility, stability and can be applied to detect real samples with desired recovery rates. In addition, the possible reduction mechanism of metronidazole and adsorption mechanism of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ were further discussed simply in this work.

Microwave-induced catalytic system has been widely used in oxidation of organic pollutants, but no report focuses on heavy metal reduction. To expand the application field of microwave-induced catalytic system, MoS 2 decorated MnFe 2 O 4 was synthesized by hydrothermal method and employed for the reduction of Cr(VI) in microwave-induced catalytic system. The morphologies, chemical compositions, and optical properties of the synthesized catalysts were investigated using SEM, XRD, FT-IR and XPS. The MoS 2 -MnFe 2 O 4 samples exhibited significantly enhanced microwave-catalytic performance for Cr(VI) reduction compared to pristine MoS 2 and MnFe 2 O 4 , among which, the MoS 2 -MnFe 2 O 4 (10 wt%) sample was most suitable for Cr(VI) reduction in aqueous solution. 85.8% of Cr(VI) removal was obtained in 16 min in the present of MoS 2 -MnFe 2 O 4 . The effect of catalyst dosage, initial pH and microwave output on Cr(VI) reduction were investigated. Mechanism of Cr(VI) removal was investigated by radical quenching experiments. The enhanced microwave-catalytic activity of MoS 2 -MnFe 2 O 4 may be owing to the fact that MoS 2 can act as an electron acceptor to suppress the recombination of microwave-excited electron-holes. These results showed that microwave-induced catalytic reduction system is promising in Cr(VI) decontamination in aqueous solution.
