Transition metal phosphosulfides MPS3 (M=Ni/Fe) for electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction

Ruifeng Xu,Ke Wang,Jiaxin Liu,Zhongkang Cao,Wenbo Wang,Xu Zhang,Bingjun Yang,Juan Yang,Xianfeng Fan,Tongtong Yu,Pengjun Ma

The replacement of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) coupled with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis systems is regarded as a highly promising strategy for reducing hydrogen production energy consumption, enhancing hydrogen efficiency, and even effectively treating urea wastewater. However, the design and fabrication of UOR catalysts in the UOR coupled HER catalytic water electrolysis system remains one of the significant challenges. Herein, we employed a facile, operable, and practical solid-state reaction method to synthesize two representative types of transition metal phosphosulfide (MPS 3 ) catalysts, and the intrinsic and structural characteristics of these catalysts were systematically characterized. Subsequently, the MPS 3 catalyst was deposited onto a nickel foam substrate (NF) to obtain the MPS/NF catalytic electrode. The UOR and OER performance of the MPS 3 /NF catalytic electrode was evaluated to elucidate the competitive mechanisms of UOR and OER within the MPS 3 catalyst. Results indicated that the UOR driving potentials required for NiPS 3 /NF and FePS 3 /NF electrodes were individually reduced by 101 mV and 33 mV compared to the corresponding OER driving potentials under the condition of 100 mA/cm 2 , and NiPS 3 /NF and FePS 3 /NF electrodes could even achieve large UOR current density of 300 mA/cm 2 at potentials as low as 1.630 V (vs. RHE) and 1.647 V (vs. RHE), respectively. In-situ Raman spectroscopy combined with XPS analysis revealed distinct catalytic pathways for NiPS 3 and FePS 3 . During catalysis, NiPS 3 undergoes surface reconstruction to form γ-NiOOH, which exhibited superior selectivity toward urea oxidation, whereas FePS 3 predominantly generated β-FeOOH, whose activity was compromised by competing oxygen evolution, thereby conferring weaker UOR selectivity compared with NiPS 3 . For the UOR-coupled HER whole-cell urea electrolysis assessment, the NiPS 3 /NF and FePS 3 /NF whole-cell attained urea degradation efficiencies of 89.04 % and 69.61 %, respectively. This work provided a novel strategy and practical approach for the development of novel, efficient, and cost-effective MPS 3 catalysts for UOR coupled with HER in the treatment of urea wastewater for synergistic hydrogen production.

Dual-band microwave-absorbing Fe/RGO composites fabricated via in-situ reduction

Yan Yuefeng,Cheng Ziyan,Ma Guansheng,Chen Tao,Gao Boshi,Liu Yuhao,Huang Xiaoxiao

Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) has been proved to be a promising electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) material candidate owing to its superior electrical and dielectric properties, along with rich potential for structural design. However, the complicated synthesis process and the contradiction between impedance matching and attenuation capacity have hindered the further development and application of graphene-based absorbing materials. Herein, a Fe nanoparticle/RGO composites was synthesized through a facile in-situ chemical reduction process. The configuration of Fe nanoparticles regulates the permittivity and permeability of RGO and balances the impedance matching. The dipole polarization caused by the residual oxygen-containing functional groups in RGO, coupled with the interfacial polarization loss caused by the Fe/RGO interface, enhance the dielectric loss capacity, contributing to microwave loss in the high-frequency range. The natural resonance and exchange resonance caused by the nano Fe particles enhance the microwave loss capacity in the low-frequency range. Benefitting from the synergistic enhancement from dielectric loss and magnetic loss, Fe/RGO composites exhibit the characteristic of daul-band absorption. Notably, the sample FG-0.25 achieved an effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) of 5.33 GHz and a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −48.9 dB. The absorption peaks in the low-frequency band can encompass a significant portion of the C-band. This research provides unique insights for the advancement of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient RGO based EMWA materials.

The effect of Fe substitution on the magnetic behaviors of HoCrO3 nanofibers

Quanli Hu,Hanqiong Luo,Chao Song,Yin Wang,Jinghai Liu

HoCrO 3 displays fascinating magnetic characteristics. Owing to the co-presence of Ho 3+ and Cr 3+ ions, complex magnetic interactions are exhibited. A facile electrospinning as well as annealing way was utilized to make Fe-substituted HoCrO 3 nanofibers, which were HoCr 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , HoCr 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 3 , and HoCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 . The perovskite orthorhombic structures of HoCrO 3 , HoCr 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , HoCr 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 3 , and HoCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 were revealed by Rietveld refined XRD patterns. With the Fe substitution, the magnetic behaviors of HoCr 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , HoCr 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 3 , and HoCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 NFs changed from canted antiferromagnetic at low temperature to paramagnetic at high temperature because of the combination of three kinds of magnetic contributions, namely Cr 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Fe 3+ . Fe substitution also enhanced the Cr 3+ ordering temperature from 139 to 161 K. This study should stimulate the development of holmium chromite nanomaterials for data storage devices and sensors.

Bifunctional catalyst Fe-Co/AC for synergistic catalyzing microwave-assisted lignin hydrogenolysis

Hongming Liu,Junhao Cui,Zhiyang Zhao,Yongqi Ren,Bailong Chen,Longzhi Li

The traditional utilization of lignin mainly relies on direct combustion, which leads to low energy efficiency and environmental pollution, becoming a key bottleneck restricting the efficient utilization of all components of lignocellulose. This paper introduced a new strategy of microwave-assisted lignin hydrogenolysis over bifunctional catalyst Fe-Co/AC to achieve high-value conversion of lignin. This article firstly investigated the hydrogenolysis characteristics and product distribution patterns in the presence of Fe-Co/AC through catalyst characterization and adsorption calculation, as well as hydrogenolysis experiments. The results showed that the formation of Fe-Co alloy in the catalyst resulted in highly catalytic activity and selectivity for the hydrogenolysis process. Next, the intrinsic effects of solvent hydrogen donors and microwaves on lignin hydrogenolysis were discussed, through comparative experiments of hydrogenolysis in absence of catalyst and microwave-assisted pyrolysis. Lastly, attention was paid to calculate the adsorption characteristics and bond length changes of different substrates under metal components in order to reveal the mechanism of Fe-Co for synergistic catalyzing lignin hydrogenolysis, and to propose a potential pathway for lignin directed conversion into phenol. The findings provide a new approach for efficient bond breaking and intermediates hydrogenation of solid wastes such as lignin and plastics to obtain high value-added products.

Fe–N–C Support-Enhanced Pt Catalyst for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction

Xinquan Wu,Zhen Sun,Hao Li,Xiaolei Guo,Zhen-Feng Huang,Ruijie Gao,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Lun Pan,Ji-Jun Zou

Platinum-based catalysts are highly effective for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but their prohibitive cost and insufficient activity impede large-scale commercialization. Herein, we report a Pt@Fe-NC electrocatalyst synthesized by depositing uniform platinum nanoparticles onto an iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–NC) support via an ethylene glycol reduction method. The Fe–NC support, prepared from an iron (II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex precursor to ensure high iron utilization, modulates the electronic structure of the Pt nanoparticles, thereby enhancing both catalytic activity and stability. The optimized Pt@Fe-NC catalyst (13.54 wt% Pt) exhibits exceptional ORR performance in acidic media, with a half-wave potential of 0.852 V and notable stability. When integrated into a zinc-air battery, the catalyst delivered a high specific capacity of 652.66 mAh g Zn −1 . Furthermore, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) employing this catalyst achieved a high open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.964 V and a peak power density of 1.722 W cm −2 , outperforming most previously reported Pt-based catalysts. This study highlights a synergistic strategy between Pt nanoparticles and metal-nitrogen-carbon (M–N–C) supports to boost ORR performance, presenting a viable path toward advanced, cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion devices like PEMFCs and zinc-air batteries. Graphical A method of preparing Fe–NC loaded Pt nanoparticle catalysts is presented. The method is used to prepare Fe–NC substrate by loading iron complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline on carbon black and then Pt nanoparticles obtained by ethylene glycol reduction method are loaded on the Fe–NC substrate. The results show that the enhanced activity of the Pt@Fe-NC catalyst is due to the modification of the electronic structure of Fe on Pt in the Fe-NC support.

Substituent Effect on the Fe(IV) Corrole Catalyzed Baeyer–Villiger Oxidation Reaction

An Li-Da,Li Feng,Qiu Yi-Feng,Liang Guo-Chao,Zhang Hao,Liu Hai Yang

Comprehending how substituent effect influences catalytic performance is essential for advancing efficient catalysts and unraveling reaction mechanisms. Examining the substituent effects of metal corrole catalyzed Baeyer–Villiger (B–V) oxidation reaction remains limited. In this work, four iron tri-aryl corrole complexes with distinct electronic structures, iron(IV) 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl) corrole [Fe IV (TPFC)Cl] ( 1 a), iron(IV) 5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-10-phenyl corrole [Fe IV (BPFPC)Cl] ( 2 a), iron(IV) 5,15-bis(phenyl)-10-pentafluorophenyl corrole [Fe IV (BPPFC)Cl] ( 3 a) and iron(IV) 5,10,15-tris(phenyl) corrole [Fe IV (TPC)Cl] ( 4 a) have been prepared. The impact of electron-withdrawing meso-substituents on their catalytic performance in B-V oxidation reaction was then investigated. The results reveal that an increased number of pentafluorophenyl substituents, which enhance the electron-withdrawing effect, correlates with superior catalytic activity. The catalytic activity follows an order 1 a >  2 a >  3 a >  4 a. The plausible mechanism to explain the observed catalytic behavior was also discussed. Graphical

A Multifunctional Fe-Based Metal–Organic Framework With Ferroptosis for Synergistic Therapy

Lu Hong,Qiaoyu Chen,Lei Rao,Zhen Wang,Bing Wang,Qing He,Wenxin Lin

Generally, single cancer treatment is insufficient to achieve ideal therapeutic effect. Multimodal therapy has the potential to overcome efficacy challenges and reveals great promise in enhancing therapeutic effect. Herein, a combination treatment system (DOX@Fe-PBC) based on chemotherapy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and ferroptosis was constructed by loading anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) into Fe-based metal–organic framework (Fe-PBC). In simulated tumor microenvironment, the system released anticancer drug DOX to be a DNA intercalator and topoisomerase II inhibitor to realize chemotherapy (CT) and iron ions were delivered to induce Fenton reaction, which boost the generation of •OH, resulting in the enhancement of the effect of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meantime, the system could consume glutathione (GSH) to reduce the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4); then, lipid peroxides (LPO) were accumulated to realize ferroptosis. DOX@Fe-PBC provided an effective strategy of chemotherapy, CDT, and ferroptosis to realize ideal cancer treatment.

Fe-TiO2-x/TiO2 S-scheme homojunction for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction

Ya-Nan Jing,Xing-Liang Yin,Lei-Lei Li,Yan-Lan Wang,Jia Xue,Ze-Feng Xu,Da-Qiang Liu,Chuan-Wu Chen,Xiao-Jie Liu,Er-Kang Liu

CO 2 -to-high value-added chemicals via a photocatalytic route is of interest but strangled by the low efficiency. Herein, a novel Fe-TiO 2-x /TiO 2 S-scheme homojunction was designed and constructed by using a facile surface modification approach whereby oxygen vacancy (OV) and Fe introducing on the TiO 2 nanorod surface. The as-synthesized Fe-TiO 2-x /TiO 2 S-scheme homojunction exhibits positive properties on promoting photocatalytic CO 2 reduction: i) the nanorod structure provides numerous active sites and a radical charge transfer path; ii) the doped Fe and OV not only synergistically enhance light utilization but also promote CO 2 adsorption; iii) the Fe-TiO 2-x /TiO 2 S-scheme homojunction benefits photoexcited charge separation and retains stronger redox capacity. Thanks to those good characters, the Fe-TiO 2-x /TiO 2 homojunction exhibits superior CO 2 reduction performances with optimized CO/CH 4 generation rates of 122/22 μmol g -1 h −1 which exceed those of pure TiO 2 by more than 9.4/7.3 folds and most currently reported catalytic systems. This manuscript develops a facile and universal approach to synthesize well-defined homojunction and may inspire the construction of other more high-efficiency photocatalysts toward CO 2 reduction and beyond.

Oxygen Bridge Governs OER via Deep Self-Reconstruction in Fe–Co Oxyhydroxides

Mingyu Liu,Bowen Pei,Hongyu Ba,Wei Ni,Huaheng Zhao,Shuang Chen,Jiamin Zhao,Jinsheng Zhao

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting involves complex multi-electron–proton transfer processes and represents the rate-determining step limiting overall electrolysis efficiency. Developing non-noble-metal catalysts with high activity and stability is therefore essential. Herein, a heterogeneous synthesis strategy was employed to in situ construct an iron-rich layered sulfate precursor (Fe0.42Co0.58-SO4/NF) on nickel foam, which underwent deep self-reconstruction in alkaline electrolyte to form nanoflower-like Fe0.42Co0.58OOH/NF. The optimized catalyst maintained its iron-rich composition and hierarchical structure, delivering outstanding OER performance with an overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, a Tafel slope of 31.9 mV·dec−1, and stability exceeding 12 h at 600 mA·cm−2. Synchrotron analyses revealed dynamic transitions between mono-μ-O and di-μ-O Fe–M (M = Fe, Co) oxygen bridges during reconstruction, which enhanced both structural robustness and active-site density. The Fe-rich environment promoted the formation of Fe3+–O–Fe3+units that synergized with Co4+species to activate the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), thereby accelerating OER kinetics. This work elucidates the key role of oxygen-bridge geometry in optimizing catalytic activity and durability, providing valuable insights into the rational design of Fe–Co-based non-noble-metal catalysts with high iron content for efficient water oxidation.

Fe (III)@TA@IGF-2 microspheres loaded hydrogel for liver injury treatment

Jie Chen,Xicheng Wang,Hua Ye,Zhenyan Yu,Longbao Feng,Jing Zhou,Yajin Che

As one of the most commonly used materials in liver tissue engineering, hydrogel has received much attention in recent years. In this work, we prepared a gelatin methacrylate (GelMA)/oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA)/galactosylated chitosan (Gal-CS)/Fe (III)@ [email protected] 200 (TA200) hydrogel loaded with insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF-2) for regeneration of damaged hepatocytes. Fe (III)@TA microspheres served as carrier to achieve sustained release of IGF-2 to promote hepatocytes regeneration. Galactose ligands could bind to the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) on the surface of hepatocytes. Galactosylated chitosan could significantly increase the specific function of hepatocytes. The hydrogel we prepared had a storage modulus of 1100 Pa and was suitable for migration of hepatocytes. The release ratio of IGF-2 could reach up to 90% within 14 days. For carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) induced human hepatic stellate cell line LX2 damage, GelMA/OHA/Gal-CS/TA200 hydrogel could significantly improve the survival of LX2 cells. The expression of HNF-4α and transferrin was detected in LX2 cells treated with hydrogel, indicating that the specific function of the liver was also restored. In summary, the GelMA/OHA/Gal-CS/TA200 hydrogels could be used as new tissue engineering scaffolds for the construction of artificial livers.

Iodide-enhanced Co/Fe-MOFs nanozyme for sensitively colorimetric detection of H2S

Xiao-Lan Zhao,Jia-Li Liu,Fa-Ting Xie,Tong Yang,Rong Hu,Yun-Hui Yang

In this paper, a simple, rapid, and low-cost colorimetric method was designed based on Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide composite for the quantitative detection of H 2 S. It is know that iodide can improve the catalytic activity of bimetallic porous material Co/Fe-MOFs via adsorption into the framework of MOFs. Herein, we demonstrate a novel strategy to enhance the peroxidase-like activity of MOFs. Compared to horseradish peroxidase (HRP), the kinetic measurement results show that Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide exhibits excellent affinity to substrates, promoting electron transfer. Due to the synergetic effect of Co/Fe-MOFs and iodide, and rapid electron transfer process, Co/Fe-MOFs-iodide demonstrates improved peroxidase-like activity. As a proof-of-concept application, a novel, highly sensitive H 2 S colorimetric method is established with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.33 nM. In the absence of iodide, LOD is approx. 200-fold higher than that of the amplified colorimetric assay. The proposed method can also accurately detect traces of H 2 S in serum samples.

Norepinephrine–Fe(III)–ATP Ternary Complex and Its Relevance to Parkinson’s Disease

Lu Kou,Yuemei Duan,Pengcheng Wang,Yaru Fu,Nerek Darabedian,Yonghui He,Dianlu Jiang,Dinglong Chen,Juan Xiang,Guokun Liu,Feimeng Zhou

The aberrant autoxidation of norepinephrine (NE) in the presence of oxygen, which is accelerated by Fe(III), has been linked to the pathogenesis of the Parkinson’s disease (PD). Adenosine triphosphate (ATP), as a neurotransmitter whose release can be stimulated by tissue damage and oxidative stress, is co-stored and often co-released with NE in presynaptic terminals. We have shown previously that ATP inhibits the iron-catalyzed dopamine oxidation, thereby decreasing the production of certain neurotoxins such as 6-hydroxydopamine. Whether ATP plays a similar role in Fe(III)-catalyzed NE oxidation and how it maintains the NE stability have not been investigated. Here, we studied the coordination in a ternary complex among NE, Fe(III), and ATP, and found that Fe(III) is coordinated as a octahedral center by NE and ATP. Voltammetry and mass spectrometry were employed to examine this ternary complex’s modulation of the NE autoxidation. NE–Fe(III)–ATP plays a protective role to modulate the autoxidation and Fe(III)-catalyzed oxidation of NE. The ternary complex can be detected in the substantia nigra (SN), locus coeruleus (LC), and striatum regions of C57BL/6 wild-type mice. In contrast, the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mouse brains displayed a significant decrease of the ternary complex in the SN region and an increase in the LC and striatum areas. We posit that the ternary complex is produced by noradrenergic neurons as a protective regulator against neuronal damage and oxidative stress, contributing to the lower vulnerability of LC neurons with respect to that of SN neurons.
