Fe-N and pyridinic-N generally are considered the active sites of Fe-N-C catalyst. In this featured work, small uniform Fe/N-rich polymer spheres are selected to prepare the Fe-N-C catalyst and study how the sintering atmosphere (NH 3 , Ar, and H 2 ) to engineer their products. The findings reveal that the sintering atmosphere greatly affected not only the composition , aggregate state, and morphology of Fe, but also the graphitization degree and pore structure of carbon. In addition, XPS results suggest that Fe-N-C-NH 3 possesses the highest Fe-N and pyridinic-N content. Combining its abundant pores, high graphitization, and large specific surface area, the catalyst obtained in NH 3 atmosphere delivers best ORR catalytic performance (E 0 = 0.97 V, E 1/2 = 0.85 V vs RHE), which is even comparable to commercial Pt/C (E 0 = 0.97 V, E 1/2 = 0.83V vs RHE). Moreover, the catalyst exhibits greater stability and methanol resistance than those of Pt/C.

Lightweight and high-performance microwave absorption materials with wide effective bandwidth are highly required due to the increasingly severe electromagnetic radiation. It is now still imperative to elaborately tune the constituents and microstructures of absorbers for improving microwave absorption capability over wide frequency ranges. Herein, sulfonated polystyrene@Fe(OH) 3 @polydopamine (SPS@Fe(OH) 3 @PDA) microspheres are firstly synthesized with ferric sulphate and dopamine as precursors of Fe(OH) 3 and amorphous carbon , and then thermally annealed at 600 °C to generate lightweight Fe@C hollow microspheres. The thermal annealing effectively decomposes SPS templates to gases, and carbonizes the PDA shell to amorphous carbon, which also reduces the ferric irons to magnetic Fe nanoparticles via the carbothermal reduction reaction. Interestingly, the microwave absorption performances of the Fe@C hollow microspheres are obviously improved by increasing the cavity sizes. The Fe@C hollow microspheres with the largest cavity of 780 nm exhibit the broadest effective absorption bandwidth of 7.5 GHz and the superior maximum reflection loss of −37.7 dB. These outstanding performances are attributed not only to the favourable synergistic effect of dielectric and magnetic losses, but also to the optimized hollow structure enhancing the attenuation capability and improving impedance matching. This work provides an efficient approach for designing and fabricating high-performance and broad-band microwave absorbers with tunable peak frequency.

Recently, in situ detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generated from live cells have caused tremendous attention, because it is of great significance in the control of multiple biological processes. Herein, Fe–N–C single-atom nanozymes (Fe–N–C SAzymes) with intrinsic peroxidase-like activity were successfully prepared via high-temperature calcination using FeCl2, glucose, and dicyandiamide as precursors. The Fe–N–C SAzymes with FeNx as active sites were similar to natural metalloproteases, which can specifically enhance the peroxidase-like activity rather than oxidase-like activity. Accordingly, owing to the excellent catalytic efficiency of the Fe–N–C SAzymes, colorimetric biosensing of H2O2 in vitro was performed via a typical 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine induced an allochroic reaction, demonstrating the satisfactory specificity and sensitivity. With regard to the practical application, in situ detection of H2O2 generated from the Hela cells by the Fe–N–C SAzymes was also performed, which can expand the applications of the newborn SAzymes.

Open-cell Fe-Al intermetallic foams were successfully prepared by a simple and energy-saving thermal explosion (TE) process. The effects of the Fe/Al molar ratio (Fe-(40–50) at. pct Al) and thermal treatment temperature on the TE temperature profile, phase composition, pore characteristics, and oxidation resistance of the prepared foams were investigated. The results showed that the Al content significantly influenced the ignition ( T ig ) and combustion ( T c ) temperatures of the TE process; in particular, as the Al content decreased, T ig increased gradually from 623 °C to 636 °C and T c decreased from 1059 °C to 981 °C. FeAl was identified as the dominant phase in the thermally treated foams. The Fe-Al intermetallic foams displayed an open porosity of 60 vol pct, with pores connected with each other to form an open pore structure. The formation of the pores was attributed to the expansion of interparticle pores in the pressed body during the TE reaction. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of the Fe-50Al foam showed that the Al 2p and O 1s binding energies were 74.5 eV and at 531.4 eV, respectively. The formation of a surface alumina layer in the early stages of the oxidation process resulted in the parabolic oxidation rate law, and the Fe-50Al foams exhibited an excellent resistance to oxidation at 650 °C in air. These results suggest that the synthesized Fe-Al foams represent promising materials for applications involving an oxidizing environment and high temperatures.

Industrial waste, urban sewage and aquaculture have led to severely increased grades of environment pollutants such as dyes, pesticides and fertilizer. The use of technologies for purifying contaminated waters can be difficult and toxic due to the anti-photolysis, anti-oxidation and anti-bio-oxidation characteristics of organic pollutants, and there is therefore a significant need for new approaches. Here, we report methods of Fenton oxidation and EDTA-Fe(III) Fenton-like oxidation which can be used to degrade malachite green (MG: a dye and antibiotic-like substance) from contaminated water. Compared with the degradation rate (59.34%) of the Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 Fenton process, the EDTA-Fe(III) Fenton-like oxidation got a better degradation rate (92.7%) at neutral pH conditions . By conducting a series of parallel controlled experiments (changing parameters such as the reactant concentration , temperature, and pH), we report the relationships between the degradation effect and different parameters, and we fitted their pseudo first order kinetic curves. Furthermore, we repeated to adjustment of the concentrations of MG in solutions to test the cycle performance and catalytic activities of EDTA-Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 system and it showed good repeatability in the first five rounds and all of them keep the degradation efficiencies greater than 80%. By conducting comparative spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments, we showed indirectly that the OH contributes to the degradation of MG. Additionally, the results of the EPR experiments showed that EDTA contributes to the generation of OH in the EDTA-Fe(III)/H 2 O 2 Fenton-like system. By conducting total organic carbon (TOC) analysis experiments, we found that EDTA was also oxidized to some extent during the degradation of MG. In all, the findings of this work widen the range of the optimal pH values up to neutral condition for degradation of MG by use of EDTA-Fe(III) Fenton-like system. And this system could be used as one approach for the degradation of organic pollutants at neutral conditions and provide some initial information regarding EDTA-Fe(III) Fenton-like oxidations. It's significant for the expansion of the homogenous Fenton-like family and its application in the field of water treatment .

Fe-Doped NiO multi-shelled microspheres have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal reaction. Various characterization techniques were introduced to investigate the structure and morphology of the as-prepared Fe-doped NiO multi-shelled microspheres. SEM and TEM observations showed that NiO microspheres are about 500 nm in diameter and with three shells. The Fe-doped NiO multi-shelled microspheres were investigated systematically as gas sensing materials for chemiresistive semiconductor-based gas sensors. The results showed that the 1.92 at% Fe-doped NiO (1.92Fe-NiO) multi-shelled microspheres exhibited enhanced gas sensing performance compared to the pure NiO multi-shelled microspheres. The gas response of 1.92Fe-NiO multi-shelled microspheres to 100 ppm butanol was 45.1 at 140 °C, which revealed a remarkable improvement over the pure NiO multi-shelled microspheres (6.80). The increased response of 1.92Fe-NiO multi-shelled microspheres may be attributed to the incorporation of Fe ions into NiO nanocrystals, which adjusted the carrier concentration and caused an increase in the oxygen species on the adsorbed surface. Therefore, the Fe-doped NiO multi-shelled microspheres should be a promising material for high performance butanol gas sensors.

Modern technological pressure for property-directing structural design of Fe/oxide core–shell nanoparticles (NPs) requires the basic understanding of the formation mechanisms and the ability to effectively tune the structures. In this work, in-depth transmission electron microscopy characterization reveals the formation of an Fe/Fe3O4 core–shell structure when iron NPs were oxidized at room temperature. More importantly, we present the first atomically resolved dynamical images showing the redox reactions in Fe/oxide NPs at high temperature (400–600 °C). The real-time videos show the unambiguous evidence of the reduction and incorporation of oxygen species along the specific interfaces, leading to the reduction of Fe3O4 to FeO and oxidation of Fe to Fe3O4, which are further investigated based on the theoretical calculations. Meanwhile, it is found that the passive Fe3O4 shell may provide the oxygen ions for the further oxidation of the Fe core at high temperature. These findings contribute to a comprehensive scenario for the structural evolution in metal/oxide nanostructures for improved device design and modeling.

Insoluble Prussian blue (IPB), Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3, is synthesized at room temperature and found to achieve a relatively high storage capacity of 146 mA h g−1 (at a 20 mA g−1 rate) as the cathode material for Na-ion batteries with high potential plateaus. XRD, SEM and TEM are employed to characterize the morphology and microstructure of the as-synthesized IPB. First-principles calculation is introduced to study the electrochemical mechanism. Generally, the environmental friendliness and low cost of the material make it possible to be used for large-scale electric storage applications.

Effective degradation of benzene was achieved in sodium percarbonate (SPC)/Fe(II)-Glu system. The presence of glutamate (Glu) could enhance the regeneration of Fe(III) to Fe(II), which ensures the benzene degradation efficiency at wider pH range and eliminate the influence of HCO 3
− in low concentration. Meanwhile, the significant scavenging effects of high HCO 3
− concentration could also be overcome by increasing the Glu/SPC/Fe(II)/benzene molar ratio. Free radical probe compound tests, free radical scavenger tests, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis were conducted to explore the reaction mechanism for benzene degradation, in which hydroxyl radical (HO•) and superoxide anion radical (O 2
•− ) were confirmed as the predominant species responsible for benzene degradation. In addition, the results obtained in actual groundwater test strongly indicated that SPC/Fe(II)-Glu system is applicable for the remediation of benzene-contaminated groundwater in practice.

In this study, a novel bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar (BC@Fe/Ni) was established to degrade nitrate pollution in water. The nanocomposite was prepared from steel pickling waste liquor and sugarcane bagasse, which are made at low cost. The particle sizes of the nanocomposite ranged from about 10 nm to 20 nm and its specific surface area (59.83 m 2 /g) was about 71% bigger than that of nanoscale zero valent iron prepared from steel pickling waste liquor (S-NZVI), which proved that biochar had an excellent dispersal effect on bimetallic iron/nickel particles. Without controlling the pH, high nitrate removal rates over 93% could be realized in nitrate concentrations below 50 mg/L. The results of batch experiments demonstrated that the kinetics curves fitted the pseudo-first-order reaction well. And it was also found that higher dosages of the nanocomposite, lower initial nitrate concentrations, and acid medium facilitated nitrate degradation. In addition, the observed pseudo-first order rate coefficient in nitrate (20 mg/L) degradation rate by 4 g/L of the bimetallic iron/nickel supported on biochar was 30% faster than that by 2 g/L the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles , due to the existence of biochar. And it was 75% faster than that by 2 g/L the nanoscale zero valent iron due to the existence of both biochar and the nanoscale zero valent nickel catalyst. Furthermore, iron and nickel ion pollution occurred in the denitrification system with bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles but not in that with the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar, due to the biochar’s adsorption. After denitrification by the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar, most of nitrate turned into ammonia (17.04 mg/L) and there only was a small amount of nitrite (0.024 mg/L) with high nitrate removal rate (99.5%). And most of ammonia can be absorbed by cation exchange resin with finial ammonia concentration of 0.58 mg/L. At last, the concentrations of nitrate (0.24 mg/L), nitrite (0.021 mg/L), and total nitrogen (0.84 mg/L) were lowest in the nanocomposite system. Overall, the bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles supported on biochar exhibited clear advantages over bimetallic iron/nickel nanoparticles and nanoscale zero valent iron with respect to degrading nitrate efficiently, preventing iron and nickel pollution and removing ammonia pollution in combination with cation exchange resin .

In this study, a novel composite containing an iron based metal-organic framework (MOF) and BiOBr was successfully synthesized by a simple method, and was fully characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier transform infrared spectra, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, the photocatalytic activities of BiOBr/MIL-88B(Fe) composites and the pure materials were evaluated by measuring the degradation of Rhodamine B under visible light. The results show that the composite exhibits better photocatalytic activities than pure materials, which can be ascribed to the high adsorption capacity of MIL-88B(Fe) and the enhanced separation of photogenerated charge carriers from assembly of MIL-88B(Fe) on BiOBr. And the effects of various operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, medium pH, the mass ratio of BiOBr, and MIL-88B(Fe) and the dye initial concentration on the degradation of RhB have been studied.

We report a versatile approach for the colorimetric assay of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity based on the distinctive metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) absorption properties of Fe(II)-phenanthroline reporter. In the presence of ALP, the applied substrate ascorbic acid 2-phosphate is enzymatically hydrolyzed to produce ascorbic acid, which then reduces Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ . The complexation of Fe 2+ with the bathophenanthroline disulfonate (BPS) ligand generates a blood-red Fe(BPS) 3 4− reporter, which is characterized by an intense MLCT absorption band at 535 nm in the visible range. Under optimal conditions, the spectral output exhibits a good quantitative relationship with ALP activity over the range of 0–220 mU mL −1 with a detection limit of 0.94 mU mL −1 . Moreover, the activity of ALP can also be conveniently judged through naked-eye observations. Results indicate that it is highly selective and can be applied to the screening of ALP inhibitors. In addition, it has been successfully employed to detect the endogenous ALP level of undiluted human serum samples, with a detection limit of 1.05 mU mL −1 being achieved. This approach avoids any elaborately designed substrates and holds considerable simplicity and flexibility for reporter design. This study broadens the horizon of the applications of phenanthroline-based transition metal complexes. Furthermore, an efficient and practical method like this has the potential to be widely used in clinical applications and in the point-of-care testing.
