Pore-Discriminative Pervaporation of Xylene Isomers Through In Situ Synthesized MIL-100(In) Membranes

Jinsuo Yu,Chenyang Jiang,Yanjun Wang,Zemin Li,Yawei Gu,Rujing Hou,Yichang Pan

Efficient xylene isomers’ separation remains a challenge due to their similar kinetic diameter and boiling points, particularly for the separation of the immediate size of meta-xylene (MX). A metal–organic framework (MOF) membrane offers the opportunity to realize the isomers’ separation due to the highly tunable pore size and pore environment. Herein, an In-based hierarchic MOF (MIL-100) with a size of 0.77 nm was screened, aiming at the realization for isomer separation through pore size matching. Meanwhile, the polar microenvironment in the MOF channel built through trimesic acid ligands contributes to the higher affinity to the MX relative to the PX. With the equimolar feed mixture of MX/PX, the optimal membrane demonstrated a total flux of 7.6 kg·m−2·h−1and an MX/PX separation factor of 2.54 at room temperature through pervaporation. Such performance highly indicates the possibility for efficient liquid xylene separation in future.

Cation Effect on the Dynamics of Intermediates in Electroreduction of Carbon Dioxide in Acids

Chenglong Wang,Shengzhou Xu,Hexing Yang,Wangjiang Gao,Chunjing Ran,Dan Ren

In the electrochemical reduction of CO2, the employment of an acidic electrolyte with an alkali metal cation could reduce carbon loss. However, how the alkali metal cation activates CO2 and promotes the following proton-coupled electron transfer steps remains ambiguous. Here, from a rigorous analysis of CO2 reduction and CO reduction, we reveal that the kinetics of the CO2 electro-activation step and the following C–C coupling step both correlate positively with the concentration of K+, except that the promotion effect of K+ on the CO2-to-*CO step reaches a plateau when the concentration of K+ is ≥0.7 M under a high overpotential. The activity toward multicarbon products is determined by the dual cationic effect of K+ on the two steps, as evidenced in in situ Raman spectroscopy. The spectroscopic investigation shows that the adsorption of *CO shifts from atop configuration to bridge configuration as a net result of the dual cation effect, and the amount of adsorbed *OH increases with the rise of K+ concentration.

Per2 deficiency in microglia alleviates motor dysfunction by inhibiting ferroptosis in spinal cord injury

Bie Pengfei,Su Dongpo,Gao Yang,Wu Liang,Niu Zhanfeng,Zhao Yanbin,He He,Jiang Zhanfeng,Zeng Zhong,Zhang Yaolin,Fan Heng,Xia Hechun

Microglia play significant roles in spinal cord injury (SCI) progression. Previous studies have suggested that ferroptosis plays a crucial role in exacerbating neuronal death following SCI; however, the role of microglial ferroptosis in SCI and the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we elucidate that lipid droplets accumulate in microglia to facilitate microglial ferroptosis after SCI. Notably, microglial ferroptosis peaks at 3 days post-injury, after which it decreases. Microglial Period 2 (Per2) expression is elevated after SCI in vivo; this change is highly synchronized with the changes in microglial ferroptosis. Microglia-specific Per2 knockout promoted neurological function recovery by suppressing microglial ferroptosis. In vitro, Per2 overexpression and deficiency amplified and mitigated microglial ferroptosis, respectively. RNA-seq indicated that Gpx4 was downregulated by Per2. Coimmunoprecipitation demonstrated that Per2 directly interacted with PPARα. Overall, our results indicate that Per2 determines the susceptibility of microglial ferroptosis via the PPARα-Gpx4 axis after SCI.

Role of citric acid in enhancing aromatic hydrogenation performance in Ni-HPW/SiO2 catalysts

Xiaofei Li,Lili Geng,Haifeng Shi,Songshou Ye,Ley Boon Sim,Jinbao Zheng,Nuowei Zhang,Binghui Chen

In this study, we utilized a sol-gel method to prepare Ni-HPW/SiO 2 catalysts with varying citric acid (CA):Ni molar ratios ranging from 0 to 5.0. The catalysts demonstrated different levels of activity in the hydrogenation of ethylbenzene , which correlated to their respective CA:Ni ratios. Introducing citric acid in the preparation process of nickel-based catalysts yielded mesopore formation and reduced NiO particle size, producing a more uniform NiO dispersion on SiO 2 , which was confirmed by BET, XRD, and TEM analyses. The results of H 2 -TPR, H 2 -TPD, NH 3 -TPD, and Py-IR analyses suggested that the addition of citric acid augmented the interaction between phosphotungstic acid (HPW), Ni species, and SiO 2 . Citric acid improved Ni species and HPW dispersion, fostering increased HPW-Ni species formation. This, in turn, generated additional electron-deficient Ni ions , stemming from semi-reduced HPW-Ni species, which acted as Lewis acid sites, enhancing Ni + species effectiveness in activating aromatic rings. The better-dispersed, non-HPW-bound NiO, which, upon complete reduction to Ni, led to a substantial rise in H 2 bond cleavage, thereby facilitating more hydrogen spillover. Overall, the infusion of citric acid into fabricating Ni-HPW/SiO 2 catalysts sparked a significant surge in their aromatic hydrogenation ability.

Role of iron homeostasis in the mutagenicity of disinfection by-products in mammalian cells

Yemian Zhou,Yun Liu,Tong Wang,Han Li,Jing He,An Xu

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) generated from water treatment have serious adverse effects on human health and natural ecosystems. However, research on the mutagenicity of DBPs with different chemical structures is still limited. In the present study, we compared the mutagenicity of 8 typical DBPs in human-hamster hybrid (A L ) cells and clarified the mechanisms involved. Our data displayed that the rank order for mutagenicity was as follows: iodoacetamide (IAcAm) > iodoacetonitrile (IAN) > iodoacetic acid (IAA) > bromoacetamide (BAcAm) ≈ bromoacetonitrile (BAN) > bromoacetic acid (BAA), which was confirmed by DNA double strand breaks and oxidative DNA damage. In contrast, bromoform (TBM) and iodoform (TIM) had minimal mutagenicity. The mutation spectrum analysis further revealed that IAN, IAcAm, and IAA could induce multilocus deletions in mammalian cells. Interestingly, nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs) and IAA were found to cause varying degrees of iron overload and lipid peroxidation, which was mediated by the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Moreover, the presence of deferoxamine (DFO), an iron ion inhibitor, effectively reduced γ-H2AX and 8-OHdG induced by N-DBPs and IAA. These results indicated that the variations in genotoxicity among DBPs with different structures were associated with their ability to disrupt iron homeostasis. This study provided new insights into the mechanisms underlying the structure-dependent toxicity of DBPs and established a foundation for a more comprehensive understanding and intervention of the health risks associated with DBPs.

Building of rich (111) grain boundary in copper for syngas in electrochemical CO2 reduction

Xia Bai,Jingmin Ge,Huanhuan Yang,Huiwen Tian,Xueqi Liu,Shiying Li,Zhikun Peng,Yaxi Li,Jiahao Wang,Hongpo Liu,Qun Xu

Building of grain boundary (GB) in Cu-based catalysts has been demonstrated to be an efficient strategy to control the product selectivity of electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR). However, the fabrication and modulation of GBs in Cu are still challenging. In this study, a series of bare Cu catalysts with controllable density of Cu(111) GBs were investigated systematically for eCO 2 RR. These catalysts exhibit superior eCO 2 RR performance for syngas production with a high FE of ∼80 % and tunable H 2 /CO ratio of 0.46–2.78. Three-dimensional wormlike Cu with abundant (111) GBs displays a stable H 2 /CO ratio of ∼0.5 over a wide potential range from −0.9 to −1.2 V ( vs. RHE). In situ Raman and ATR-SEIRAS spectroscopy combined with DFT calculations reveal that Cu(111) GBs enhance the adsorption of CO 2 , lower the energy barriers of CO 2 to *COOH and *CO, further highlighting the potential to control syngas production with desirable proportion over Cu-based catalysts.

Synergistic effects in ordered Co oxides for boosting catalytic activity in advanced oxidation processes

Ming Zhu,Daqin Guan,Zhiwei Hu,Hong-Ji Lin,Chien-Te Chen,Hwo-Shuenn Sheu,Shaobin Wang,Jing Zhou,Wei Zhou,Zongping Shao

Synergistic effects are often used in catalyst design for many environmental/energy applications, however, the mechanism and a molecular-level structure to exert maximal synergy effects in catalyzing advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in wastewater remediation are still unknown. Here, by designing a model perovskite family R BaCo 2 O 6- δ ( R = lanthanides) with Co 4+ in octahedral coordination (Co4+ oct) and Co 3+ in pyramidal coordination (Co3+ pyr), we ambitiously confirm the unique synergy of unsaturated (Co3+ pyr) and metallic (Co4+ oct) Co sites for efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Combined X-ray adsorption spectra and theoretical calculations strongly demonstrate that Co3+ pyr and Co4+ oct synergistically contribute to PMS adsorption and O O bond cleavage, and facilitate Co 3+ /Co 4+ redox cycle for radical generation. With appropriate ratio and ordered distribution of Co3+ pyr/Co4+ oct, the Gd 0.5 La 0.5 BaCo 2 O 5.75 exhibits remarkable catalytic activity for pollutant degradation, outperforming all previously reported Co 4+ -related oxides. This work may inspire rational design of efficient metal oxide catalysts.

Oxygen Vacancies Generated Out-of-Plane and In-Plane Ferroelectricity in Layered Bi2WO6 Nanoflake

Lin Wang,Xiaohang Pan,Yong Zhang,Yunlei Zhong,Xu Zhang,Zhen Zhang,Alei Li,Pin Zhao,Qing Guo,Yunfei Li,Hui Zhang,Leilei Xu,Yujia Wang,Mengjiao Han,Xiuliang Ma,Lixing Kang

Ferroelectricity in ultrathin 2D materials has garnered significant attention owing to its potential applications in nonvolatile memory, nanoelectronics, and optoelectronics. However, the exploration of ferroelectricity in materials possessing inherent centrosymmetric or mirror symmetry, particularly in the 2D domain, remains limited. In this study, the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique is utilized to synthesize ultrathin Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) nanoflakes, revealing robustly intercorrelated out-of-plane (OOP) and in-plane (IP) ferroelectric polarization. The measured ferroelectric phase transition temperature of ultrathin BWO nanoflake is ≈800 K. The emergence of OOP ferroelectricity in BWO nanoflake is ascribed to the displacement of oxygen vacancies between neighboring asymmetric sites, leading to the disruption of local structural mirror symmetry and the alignment of dipole moments. Moreover, the IP and OOP ferroelectric responses are modulated by distinct maximum bias voltages. This investigation offers novel insights into the advancement of 2D ferroelectrics with elevated Curie temperatures.

Decoding bitter peptides in soy sauce: From identification to mechanism in bitter taste formation

Yongzhao Bi,Xingming Sun,Yan Huang,Baoguo Sun,Li Liang,Yuyu Zhang

The molecular basis of bitterness in soy sauce was investigated through an integrated approach combining peptidomics, sensory evaluation, cell biology, and molecular docking. Ethanol-extracted bitter peptides (BPs) were identified via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Seventeen BP candidates were shortlisted based on toxicity, allergenicity, bitterness predictions and hydrophobicity calculation. Sensory evaluation showed that 13 peptides exhibited bitterness, with 8 significantly enhancing bitterness of 6 key free amino acids in soy sauce. Using a HEK-293T cell-based cAMP assay, FYL and VLY were identified as hTAS2R4 ligands (EC₅₀ = 62.11 and 199.51 μM, respectively). Molecular docking revealed that both peptides bind primarily via hydrophobic interactions to residues such as VAL85, PHE88, and PHE62. These findings provide a theoretical basis for bitterness mechanism and flavor improvement of soy sauce.

Luteolin ameliorates skin lipid hypersecretion, inflammation and oxidative stress in vivo and in vitro

Jie Li,Bingyong Mao,Botao Wang,Xin Tang,Qiuxiang Zhang,Tianmeng Zhang,Jianxin Zhao,Hao Zhang,Shumao Cui

Luteolin (LUT) is a natural dietary ingredient with a wide range of biological functions and has been used in skin improvement. Skin lipid oversecreting is an exceedingly common disorder of the pilosebaceous glands and popular in adolescents. This study evaluated the effect of LUT on ameliorating oleic acid (OA) induced skin lipid accumulation in C57BL/6 mice and SZ95 cells. The level of major lipids and some key lipid metabolism markers were assessed, including triglyceride (TG), non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), cholesterol, sterol regulatory-binding protein 1 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors. In vivo data showed decreasing significantly cholesterol levels and in vitro data demonstrated the remarkable influence in the reduction of TG and NEFA levels. Besides, LUT affected the diversity and structure of gut bacteria, an increase in the relative abundance of Akkermansia, Bacteroides and Alistipes , which were associated with the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory process. Additionally, our study presented that LUT significantly reduced the level of malondialdehyde (MDA, a lipid peroxidation marker), inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory factor (TNF-α, IL-6) as well as up-regulated the mRNA expression level of SIRT1, indicating LUT alleviating inflammation and enhancing antioxidation may be associate with the activation of SIRT1 pathway.

Tailoring linker defects in MOF-808 to improve CO2 separation in mixed matrix membranes

Po-Chun Wu,Ho Jun Lee,Yi-Fan Lin,Kuo-Lun Tung,Jong Suk Lee,Dun-Yen Kang

Carbon capture is widely recognized as a pivotal technology for alleviating the accelerating impacts of global warming. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) that embed metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a compelling route to high-performance separations, and MOF-808 stands out among them because of its outstanding chemical stability and environmentally friendly synthesis. In this study, the defect density of MOF-808 was tuned by varying the formic acid modulator: Higher modulator loading produced MOF-808 with higher linker defect density. After synthesis, MOF-808 was washed with either water or ethanol and then incorporated into PEBAX matrix through a drying-free process that ensured uniform dispersion. Washing with ethanol altered the pore coordination environment of MOF-808, partially replacing formate with ethoxide. Introducing an appropriate amount of formic acid created additional open metal sites and increased both CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity; however, excessive formic acid produced too many defects, causing severe pore blockage and consequently lowering the CO 2 permeability. The drying-free method, by preventing MOF aggregation and ensuring homogeneous dispersion, led to a 38 % increase in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity compared with the conventional drying method. The ethoxide substitution induced by ethanol washing occupied part of the pore volume, leading to a reduction in CO 2 permeability. The optimized MOF-808/PEBAX MMM achieved a CO 2 permeability of 150 Barrer and a CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 76.4, both markedly higher than those of the pristine polymer. These results highlight a sustainable, scalable strategy for producing high-efficiency membranes for post-combustion CO 2 capture.

Proanthocyanidins in seed coat tegmen and endospermic cap inhibit seed germination in Sapium sebiferum

Faheem Afzal Shah,Jun Ni,Jing Chen,Qiaojian Wang,Wenbo Liu,Xue Chen,Caiguo Tang,Songling Fu,Lifang Wu

Sapium sebiferum , an ornamental and bio-energetic plant, is propagated by seed. Its seed coat contains germination inhibitors and takes a long time to stratify for germination. In this study, we discovered that the S. sebiferum seed coat (especially the tegmen) and endospermic cap (ESC) contained high levels of proanthocyanidins (PAs). Seed coat and ESC removal induced seed germination, whereas exogenous application with seed coat extract (SCE) or PAs significantly inhibited this process, suggesting that PAs in the seed coat played a major role in regulating seed germination in S. sebiferum . We further investigated how SCE affected the expression of the seed-germination-related genes. The results showed that treatment with SCE upregulated the transcription level of the dormancy-related gene, gibberellins (GAs) suppressing genes, abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis and signalling genes. SCE decreased the transcript levels of ABA catabolic genes, GAs biosynthesis genes, reactive oxygen species genes and nitrates-signalling genes. Exogenous application of nordihydroguaiaretic acid, gibberellic acid, hydrogen peroxide and potassium nitrate recovered seed germination in seed-coat-extract supplemented medium. In this study, we highlighted the role of PAs, and their interactions with the other germination regulators, in the regulation of seed dormancy in S. sebiferum .
