(Fe, Ni)S2@MoS2/NiS2 hollow heterostructure nanocubes for high-performance alkaline water electrolysis

Liangyu Tong,Yunpeng Liu,Chenyu Song,Yuqing Zhang,Sanjay S. Latthe,Shanhu Liu,Ruimin Xing

Hollow hybrid heterostructures are regarded to be promising materials as bifunctional electrocatalysts for highly efficient water electrolysis due to their intriguing morphological features and remarkable electrochemical properties . Herein, with FeNi-PBA as both a precursor and morphological template, we demonstrate the rational construct of cost-effective (Fe,Ni)S 2 @MoS 2 /NiS 2 hollow hybrid heterostructures as bifunctional electrocatalysts for alkaline overall water splitting. Microstructural analysis shows that the hybrid is a kind of hierarchical heterostructure composed of MoS 2 /NiS 2 nanosheets/nanoparticles in situ grown on hollow (Fe,Ni)S 2 nanocubes with abundant heterointerfaces, which effectively maximizes the electrochemical active sites to the accessible electrolyte ions , leading to the promoted charge transfer. As expected, the hybrid shows remarkable alkaline electrocatalytic performance, such as hydrogen evolution overpotential of 176 mV and oxygen evolution overpotential of 342 mV at 50 mA cm −2 , as well a cell voltage of 1.65 V at 20 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the stability and durability are greatly enhanced under harsh electrochemical conditions. This study opens a new venue for developing earth-abundant bifunctional electrocatalysts with hollow hybrid heterostructures for alkaline water electrolysis in the future.

Effect of MoS2 on phenol decomposition in water after high-voltage pulse discharge treatment

Haixia Wu,Ruoyu Liu,Yongjun Sun,Yiyun Wen,Quanfa Zhao,Shaohua Lin,Yong Wang

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) was added to the system after being treated with high-voltage pulse discharge plasma to improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants and reduce energy consumption. The discharge plasma-treated solution contains hydrogen peroxide and metal iron ions, and MoS 2 addition can cause co-catalytic Fenton reaction . The effects of discharge time, initial pH, phenol concentration, MoS 2 dosage, discharge voltage, and gas type on phenol removal and aqueous H 2 O 2 concentration were mainly investigated. Results showed that the addition of MoS 2 after plasma treatment can reduce the plasma treatment time by 70% and maintain or even increase the degradation efficiency of phenol from 40% (after 20 min of discharge plasma) to 92% (after turning off the discharge and dosing with MoS 2 for 30 min). Acidic conditions (pH = 3–4) and oxygen were beneficial to phenol removal. MoS 2 addition greatly improved the catalytic oxidation of discharge plasma. This study provides a promising direction for water treatment based on plasma technology .

Dielectric properties and energy storage performance of PVDF-based composites with MoS2@MXene nanofiller

Hou-Qing Wang,Jing-Wen Wang,Xin-Zhu Wang,Xin-Hua Gao,Guo-Chao Zhuang,Jian-Bao Yang,Hua Ren

Hybrid nanofillers designed for polymer dielectric nanocomposites are expected to obtain excellent dielectric energy storage performance by virtue of different morphologies and electrical properties. In this work, the 2D/2D heterostructures of 2D MoS 2 grown on the surface of 2D transition metal carbide Ti 3 C 2 MXene (MoS 2 @MXene) have been successfully obtained through hydrothermal reaction. MoS 2 @MXene was incorporated into poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to form the PVDF based dielectric composites (MoS 2 @MXene/PVDF) through solution casting method. The composite with 3.47 wt% MoS 2 @MXene is very flexible with an elastic modulus of 385 MPa, which is not much different with pure PVDF (357 MPa). The maximum electric displacement at room temperature and an electric field of 400 MV/m is 10.96 μC/cm 2 , moreover the discharged energy density reaches 17.22 J/cm 3 , which is nearly 4.5 times that of pure PVDF (3.83 J/cm 3 at the maximum electric field of 250 MV/m). The dielectric constant of 3.47 wt% MoS 2 @MXene/PVDF at room temperature and 10 3 Hz is 24.3, and the loss is only 0.02. Even though the filler content is increased to 12.51 wt%, the loss is only 0.06, and the dielectric constant of the composite film can reach 145.2. Compared with the blend of PVDF and MXene, the dielectric constant of MXene@MoS 2 /PVDF shows more excellent frequency stability and lower dielectric loss.

Interfacial polarization in ultra-small Co3S4−MoS2 heterostructure for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Jiabing Luo,Yan Zhou,Yongxiao Tuo,Yufeng Gu,Xingzhao Wang,Qianyu Guo,Chen Chen,Dong Wang,Shutao Wang,Jun Zhang

Constructing suitable heterostructured electrocatalysts and understanding their interfacial effects have been considered as an effective strategy to improve the intrinsic activity of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, ultra-small Co 3 S 4 -MoS 2 heterostructure was synthesized using a precursor solubility controlling method. It is found that the electrocatalytic HER performance of the heterostructured catalysts exhibited a low overpotential of 260 mV at 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and possessed remarkable stability over 100 h continuous electrolysis at high current density (100 mA cm −2 ). Besides, Co 3 S 4 -MoS 2 electrocatalyst is applied as the cathode material for a homemade membrane electrode device for water electrolysis to produce hydrogen. It shows that the electrocatalyst has a comparable catalytic activity to that of 20% Pt/C catalyst at 70 °C. The outstanding performance of the ultra-small Co 3 S 4 -MoS 2 heterostructure is attributed to the efficient mass transport benefitting from its unique ultra-small hollow structure and the rapid electron transfer at the interface between Co 3 S 4 and MoS 2 . XPS characterizations and DFT calculations confirm that the interfacial polarization and the corresponding electron transfer from Co 3 S 4 to MoS 2 at the interface optimizes the charge state of the catalyst and tunes the binding strength to the intermediates during each elementary step of the HER process. To be exact, the electron transfer promotes the adsorption of OH* on the charge-depleted Co 3 S 4 sites and the adsorption of H* on the charge-enriched MoS 2 sites, respectively, thereby reducing the free energy barrier of the water dissociation step (rate-limiting step) and improving the reaction kinetics. The solubility controlling strategy may provide a novel idea for rational design and synthesis of superior stability transition metal sulfides HER electrocatalysts.

Sustainable production of clean water: 1 T-MoS2/PDA composite enhanced the photothermal conversion

Hankui Sang,Congming Tang,Kai Ma,Xinli Li

The scarcity of fresh water resources necessitates us to develop an efficient technique for sustainable production of clean water from seawater and wastewater. Here, we constructed the 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA (polyaniline) as a photothermal material for purification of seawater and wastewater to produce clean water through interfacial evaporation by virtue of sunlight. 1 T-MoS 2 has a higher evaporation capacity of water than 2 H-MoS 2 , which was selected to prepare 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite for photothermal conversion. As expected, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite offers a higher evaporation rate of water than both 1 T-MoS 2 and PDA , which owes to an excellent light absorbance, low light reflectance and good wettability . Under irradiation of 1 sun, the evaporation rate of water over the 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite in pure water reached 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , and the photothermal conversion efficiency reached 92%. Encouragingly, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite can be well used to treat real seawater and various wastewater such as organic dye solution and heavy metal ion solution, in which the evaporation rate of water is close to pure water, and the quality of water is better than the standard of drinking water established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Besides, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite still maintain an excellent evaporation performance after treatment of acidic solution and alkaline solution, indicating an excellent durability. This work provides a feasible solution for producing clean water by solar-driven interfacial evaporation from seawater and wastewater.

Interface engineering of CoS/MoS2 heterostructure for the electrocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3

Yixian Liu,Ruqiang Wu,Yunliang Liu,Peiji Deng,Yaxi Li,Yuanyuan Cheng,Yongchao Du,Zenan Li,Xiong Yan,Naiyun Liu,Zhenhui Kang,Haitao Li

As an environmentally friendly and sustainable method for ammonia synthesis, nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) by electrocatalysis possesses several advantages, including viability under mild conditions, abundant reaction raw materials and low energy consumption, and thus it is supposed to be a promising alternative to the traditional Haber–Bosch process. However, the stable NN bonds in the nitrogen (N2) and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) put harsh requirements on catalysts. In this study, the CoS/MoS2 heterojunction catalyst where CoS nanoparticles are anchored on the MoS2 nanosheets is reported as a high-efficiency NRR catalyst. The catalysts have high NH3 yield (23.23 μg h−1 mgcat.−1), reasonable faradaic efficiency (FE, 12.63%) and long-term electrochemical stability under −0.45 V vs. RHE in 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution, whose performance is better than MoS2 and CoS. The TPV results show rapid interfacial electron transfer and good conductivity of the material, and the DFT calculation reveals that the CoS attached to the (100) plane effectively enhances N2 adsorption and catalysis performance.

Facile exfoliation of MoS2 powders into nanosheets with excellent fluorescence quenching performance of perovskite

Zhengshan Tian,Heng Guo,Wei Liu,Kesheng Cao,Suzhen Bai,Qinlong Peng

MoS 2 nanosheets of pure semi-conducting hexagonal phase (2H-phase) have lots of potential applications due to their unique and novel property, and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer is very easy to happen between zero-dimensional (0D) perovskite quantum dots and two-dimensional (2D) MoS 2 nanosheets. Herein, we demonstrate that a facile and green method to fabricate MoS 2 nanosheets by sonication-assisted exfoliation of MoS 2 powders in pure water after a hydrothermal reaction . The experimental results confirm that MoS 2 ultrathin sheets obtained from powders are monolayer and few-layer 2H-phase nanosheets with size of 100–300 nm. Interestingly, the as-prepared MoS 2 nanosheets have excellent performance to quench the fluorescence of CsPbBr 3 quantum dots. It can provide a new way for us to explore energy resonance transfer between 0D quantum dots and 2D layered materials.

Pt Edge-Doped MoS2: Activating the Active Sites for Maximized Hydrogen Evolution Reaction Performance

Liyuan Pei,Haohui Qiao,Bin Chen,Xiaodong Zhu,Ruth Anaya Davis,Keyu Zhu,Lei Xia,Pei Dong,Mingxin Ye,Jianfeng Shen

The demand of clean energy calls for efficient and low-cost hydrogen evolution reaction electrocatalysts. Fabricating hybrid catalysts from noble/non-noble catalysts is a practical route to reducing the consumption of noble metals and enhancing catalytic efficiency. Here, 2H-MoS 2 is etched and edge-doped with Pt nanoparticles using focused ion beam and photoreduction techniques. Precise comparison of as-prepared samples demonstrates that the enhancement of catalytic performance can be controlled through tuning the catalyst defect length. On this basis, remarkably high performance is obtained by designing a specific defect array that is superior to commercial Pt/C with less Pt loading and higher mass activity. It has been proved by experimentation and COMSOL Multiphysics simulations that the promotion of catalytic activity not only benefits from the synergistic effect of Pt and edge active sites, but also contributes to the increased potential at the edges of the designed defect. This study sheds light on the mechanism of understanding nanoscale edge-doped hybrid catalysts and provides a feasible strategy for the full utilization of noble metals.

The performance and kinetics of flower-like MoS2 for Hg2+ removal from acidic wastewater

Yongpeng Ma,Wentao Gu,Chaobin Shi,Xiaojing Zhang,Lifeng Han,Nan Liu,Tang Luo,Hongzhong Zhang

In this study, flower-like MoS 2 was synthesized under non-equilibrium conditions for effectively absorbing Hg 2+ from acidic wastewater. The prepared flower-like MoS 2 was characterized using XRD, FESEM, BET, and EDS analyses. The effects of initial concentration of Hg 2+ , pH, temperature, and common anions on the adsorption performance of flower-like MoS 2 were investigated. The results showed that the removal of Hg 2+ from a solution with the initial concentration of 200 mg/L Hg 2+ was close to 100 % within 60 min. The maximum adsorption capacity was 1790 mg/g at 25 °C. The regression coefficient for the adsorption of Hg 2+ conformed to the pseudo second-order kinetics, and the adsorption isotherm was more consistent with Langmuir model, indicating that the removal of Hg 2+ using flower-like MoS 2 was through monolayer adsorption. The reaction activation energy for the adsorption of Hg 2+ by flower-like MoS 2 was 26.89 kJ/mol, which again verified that the synthesized material was a fast and efficient adsorption material. Based upon the results, it is inferred that the flower-like MoS 2 has a high ability for removing Hg 2+ from wastewater and therefore, exhibits broad application prospects.

Flower-like MoS2/cotton fiber-derived TiO2 composites with strong electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Tang Qin,Chen Hui,Shen Jun

The flower-like MoS 2 /cotton fiber-derived TiO 2 (MoS 2 /CF–TiO 2 ) composites were successfully prepared through the bio-template method and hydrothermal reaction. The influence of TiO 2 morphology and content on the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance of the composites was explored. The enhancement effect and mechanism of the heterostructure formed by MoS 2 and CF–TiO 2 on the EMW absorption performance were analyzed. The results showed that when CF–TiO 2 was added with a titanium-molybdenum atomic ratio of 2:1, the MoS 2 /CF–TiO 2 composites reached the minimum reflection loss (RL) of − 42.4 dB at 6.4 GHz when the thickness was 4.0 mm. The strong EMW absorption performance of MoS 2 /CF–TiO 2 composites could be attributed to the improvement of impedance matching. The good interface contact between the tubular CF–TiO 2 and flower-like MoS 2 not only increased the specific surface area of the material, but also greatly improved the conductivity of the material, enhancing the conduction loss and various polarization losses.

MoS2-based nanocomposites with high photothermal conversion efficiency for combinational photothermal/photodynamic tumor therapy

Jing Liu,Endian Cui,Qun Zhang,Denghui Xie

Photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) plays a crucial role in tumor photothermal therapy (PTT). In this work, we developed a MoS 2 -based antitumor agent with enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency by size/morphology tailoring and IR820 loading for combinational photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) of breast cancer. Among three MoS 2 -based nanomaterials, namely MoS 2 nanospheres (NSs), MoS 2 nanoflowers (NFs) and MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs), MoS 2 NSs possessed the highest PCE at 37.48%. In order to further improve the PCE, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-assisted photosensitizer IR820 decoration was carried out to prepare the MoS 2 @PEI@IR820 (MPI) nanocomposite. The introduced IR820 not only improves PCE of the MoS 2 nanomaterials to 47.08% by increasing the light absorption for enhancing PTT, but produces cytotoxic ROS for PDT, resulting in a combinational PTT/PDT with the multifunctional MPI. In addition, in vivo fluorescence (FL) bioimaging and infrared thermographic imaging have been achieved by the designed MPI nanoplatform, which has proven to be good biocompatibility, low toxicity and high PCE. This study provides a novel way for the design and construction of prominent theragnostic nanoagents for combinational PTT/PDT.

Electrochemical chloramphenicol sensors-based on trace MoS2 modified carbon nanomaterials: Insight into carbon supports

Shang Gao,Yaqing Zhang,Zhimin Yang,Teng Fei,Sen Liu,Tong Zhang

Carbon nanomaterials are considered as potentially promising sensing materials for fabrication of high-performance electrochemical chloramphenicol (CAP) sensors. However, it is highly required to investigate the structure effect of carbon supports on electrochemical sensing performances. Herein, three typical carbon nanomaterials were selected as carbon supports to deposition of trace MoS 2 , including reduced graphene oxide (rGO), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon black (CB), which were subsequently used to construct electrochemical CAP sensors. The combined characterizations of Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicate that these MoS 2 modified carbon nanomaterials show the morphology and microstructures similar with carbon supports as used. Electrochemical tests indicate that the sensing performances of these CAP sensors are dependent on the structure of carbon supports. Among all these MoS 2 modified carbon nanomaterials, MoS 2 modified rGO hybrids display large electrochemically active surface area and low interfacial resistance between electrolyte and electrode, resulting in the highest sensitivity of 3.581 μA μM −1 cm −2 . As a result, rGO is regarded as good candidate for fabrication of high-performance CAP sensors, compared to MWCNTs and CB. The present work not only clarifies structure effect of carbon supports on electrochemical sensing performances, but also provides help for the construction of high-performance electrochemical sensors and biosensors based on carbon nanomaterials.
