Preparation of PVA/GO/h-BN Janus Film with High Thermal Conductivity and Excellent Flexibility via a Density Deposition Self-assembly Method

Luo Fang-Hua,Dong Zhi-Tao,Chen Guo-Hua,Ma Chen,Wang Huai-Yuan

Janus films with asymmetric physical/chemical properties have attracted considerable attention due to their promising applications in personal thermal management, electronic skins, sensors, actuators, etc. However, traditional methods for fabricating Janus films conventionally need the assistance of an interface or auxiliary equipment, which are usually complex and time-consuming. Herein, flexible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/graphene oxide (GO)/h-BN (recorded as PVA/GO/h-BN) Janus films with thermally, optically, and electrically anisotropic properties are fabricated by a simple density deposition self-assembly method, which just utilizes the density difference between GO and h-BN during water evaporation. Experimental results show that the two sides of the acquired Janus films have obvious asymmetric characteristics. In the original state of the PVA/GO/h-BN Janus films, the thermal conductivity of the GO side (10.06 W·m −1 ·K −1 ) is generally lower than that of the h-BN side (10.48 W·m −1 ·K −1 ). But after GO is reduced, the thermal conductivity of the rGO side reaches 12.17 W·m −1 ·K −1 , surpassing that of the h-BN side. In addition, the relative reflectance of the h-BN side of Janus film is also significantly higher than that of the rGO side, and the surface resistance difference between the two sides is about 4 orders of magnitude. The prepared PVA/GO/h-BN Janus films show great application potential in human thermal management, light conversion switches, and electronic skins. This study provides a simple and versatile strategy for fabricating Janus films with multifunctional (such as thermal, optical, and electrical) anisotropies.

Poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) grafted on PVA hydrogel via a novel surface modification method under near-infrared light for enhancement of antifouling properties

Jinsheng Zhou,Yanming Lin,Ling Wang,Li Zhou,Bin Yu,Xianghui Zou,Zhongkuan Luo,Huiyuan Hu

A novel near-infrared (NIR) light induced photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition - fragmentation chain-transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization was developed and carboxybetaine methacrylate (CBMA) polymer brush was constructed on the PVA hydrogel via this one-spot method to enhance the antifouling properties. PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel displayed higher hydrophilicity , while the thermal properties decreased due to the lower decomposition properties of pCBMA and the partly destruction of crystal structure inside the PVA hydrogel. The antifouling properties of PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel was improved significantly because the surface hydration and steric repulsion effect of pCBMA polymer brush. Importantly, PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel PVA-g-pCBMA hydrogel could be considered as no cytotoxic effect or reduction of proliferation to primary human eyelid fibroblast cells following the guidelines stated by ISO 10993-5:2009 (direct contact test). Considering the excellent penetration ability of NIR, AlPc catalyzed PET-RAFT polymerization provided a new modification approach for various biological or medical materials on industrial scale.

Coaxial electrospun PVA/PCL nanofibers with dual release of tea polyphenols and ε-poly (L-lysine) as antioxidant and antibacterial wound dressing materials

Xingzi Lan,Yurong Liu,Yaqi Wang,Feng Tian,Xiaomin Miao,Han Wang,Yadong Tang

Preparing wound dressing with dual-delivery of antioxidant and antibacterial agents is highly desirable in clinical wound treatment. Herein, a series of coaxial nanofiber membranes loaded with antioxidant tea polyphenols (TP) in the core and antibacterial ε-poly (L-lysine) (ε-PL) in the shell layer were successfully fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. The physicochemical characterizations by transmission electron microscopy , inverted fluorescence microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the formation of core-shell structure. The results of in vitro drug release indicated that ε-PL exhibited a fast release profile while TP released in a sustained manner, which is favorable to the achievement of quick bacteria inhibition in the initial phase as well as long-term antioxidant activity during wound healing. The antioxidant activity of coaxial nanofibers was found to be increased with the increment of TP content and incubation time . The antibacterial assays against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated that the incorporation of ε-PL in the coaxial nanofibers led to strong antibacterial activity . Additionally, all the coaxial nanofibers possessed good cytocompatibility. Therefore, the prepared coaxial nanofibers simultaneously incorporated with ε-PL and TP are promising as potential wound dressing materials.

Synergistic enhancement of ammonium perchlorate in LP/PVA-based electrically controlled solid propellants: In-depth insights into thermal decomposition kinetics and combustion behavior

Hongtong Hu,Jia Liu,Zhenguang Wang,Yan Zhang,Yongjie Ding,Jifei Ye

Lithium perchlorate/polyvinyl alcohol (LP/PVA)-based electrically controlled solid propellants (ECSPs) exhibit significant potential for novel controllable propulsion; however, their complex thermal decomposition behavior restricts practical application. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces ammonium perchlorate (AP) as a synergistic oxidative modifier. Herein, the thermal decomposition characteristics and non-isothermal kinetics of LP/AP/PVA-based ECSPs were systematically investigated. Simultaneous thermal analysis reveals that the addition of AP transforms the slow, multi-step decomposition of the LP/PVA-based ECSP into a single, vigorous stage. This leads to a more concentrated energy release and concurrently decreases the main decomposition peak temperature from 326.17 °C to 259.5 °C. Kinetic analysis via the model-free isoconversional Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method demonstrated that the average activation energy (Ea) was significantly reduced from 169.24 kJ/mol for the pristine LP/PVA-based ECSP to 111.08 kJ/mol for its optimized LP/AP/PVA counterpart. The variation trend of Ea reveals a fundamental shift in the rate-limiting step: from a diffusion-controlled process hindered by a physical barrier of char layer and molten salt, to a chemical reaction-controlled process accelerated by AP. Based on these findings, a novel “acid-catalyzed and radical-synergistic initiation” mechanism is proposed: HClO 4 generated from AP decomposition induces the dehydration of the PVA backbone at the early stage, while ·OH radicals provide a low-energy-barrier reaction pathway. Consequently, the combustion performance was enhanced, evidenced by a 142.1% increase in burning rate, a 21.9% reduction in ignition delay, and a 13.1% decrease in the required electrical energy for ignition. This work not only presents an effective strategy for tuning ECSP performance but also provides fundamental kinetic insights into the synergistic enhancement effect, offering experimental support for the design of novel ECSP formulations.

Nan Lu,Xi Zhang,Ruiqi Na,Wendi Ma,Chongyang Zhang,Yuchao Luo,Yongfeng Mu,Shuling Zhang,Guibin Wang

The synthesis of a nanocomposite gel polymer electrolytes (NGPEs) using Li + -functionalized SPEEK (SPEEK(Li)) nanofiber membrane as a matrix, cross-linked PVA as a gelled agent and LiClO 4 as an electrolytic salt for electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) were reported in this work. Compared with conventional PVA based gel electrolyte, the “SO 3 − Li + ” functional groups and the pores structure of the SPEEK(Li) nanofiber membrane improves the ionic conductivity as well as mechanical stability , which made the prepared NGPEs exhibited a high ionic conductivity of 8.9 × 10 −3  S cm −1 at ambient temperature and a large voltage stability window range from 0 to 2.0 V. The fabricated symmetric EDLCs showed a specific capacitance of 146.96 F g −1 at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , with a maximum energy density of 18.26 W h kg −1 . Meanwhile, the EDLCs showed outstanding cyclical stability of 98% specific capacitance retention after 3000 cycles GCD testing, all of these results indicated that the NGPEs should be appropriate to EDLCs and next-generation energy storage systems .

A biodegradable nanocellulose based piezoelectric energy conversion device strengthened by designing PVA-cellulose dual-network structure for green in-situ synthesis of ZnO

Zhifeng Zhao,Qingtao Zhu,Qiuyun Chen,Junjie Ma,Lijun Zhou,Siru Su,Jiabin Chen,Zhigao Liu,Quanping Yuan

The study systematically explored the effects of the combination of CNF and PVA on PVA-CMZ composite films. • PVA-CNF dual-network structure possesses high specific surface and abundant active sites. • The abundant binding of ZnO is promoted by the active sites on the above structure. • The interface interaction formed by the oxygen-containing groups of CNF and PVA makes the overall bonding tighter, where tensile strength of composite films reaches 72.50 ± 7.39 MPa. • V OC and I SC of PENG reaches 10.11 V and 698 nA under pressure of 100 kPa respectively. High-performance and environmentally friendly piezoelectric films based on biomass have received extensive attention recently. Among them, wooden cellulose nanofiber (CNF) has become a research hotspot for its low cost, high flexibility and good biocompatibility. In this work, the interwoven PVA-CNF dual-network structure with abundant active sites for its high specific surface was constructed by adding CNF and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with abundant oxygen-containing groups, in which MXene was also added as filler, as well as that ZnO was synthesized in the MXene and dual-network substrate via an efficient two-step hydrothermal process to obtain PVA-CNF/MXene@ZnO (PVA-CMZ) composite film. The abundant active sites on the surface of the dual-network structure promote the in-situ synthesis and binding of a large amount of ZnO, further enhancing the overall piezoelectric performance. Moreover, a strong interface interaction is formed by the abundant oxygen-containing groups of CNF and PVA in the assembly process, by which the tight bonding interface among the fillers is practically conducive to the charge and stress transfer, thereby enhancing the overall piezoelectric and mechanical performance. Therefore, the longitudinal piezoelectric constant and tensile strength of the composite film can reach as high as 16.05 ± 0.63 pC·N −1 and 72.50 ± 7.39 MPa respectively, along with the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current of 10.11 V and 698 nA under a pressure of 100 kPa. Furthermore, it can charge commercial capacitors of specification efficiently, which can still generate stable output under the periodic cyclic force of 5000 s.

Crosslinker-free PVA/CS-ag@PDA hydrogel with controlled silver ion release and NIR-enhanced antibacterial activity for MRSA-infected diabetic wound repair

Xiali Guan,Xinbo Wei,Qian Wang,Bing Chen,Yu Wang,Xiaonan Yang

A crosslinker-free PVA/CS hydrogel with polydopamine-engineered Ag nanoparticles was developed. • The hydrogel shows strong tissue adhesion, mechanical robustness, and self-healing for long-term wound application. • PDA enables sustained Ag⁺ release and stable NIR-responsive photothermal heating. • Ag@PDA0.5 balances antibacterial efficacy, photothermal activity, and cytocompatibility. • NIR-mediated photothermal treatment reduces inflammation and promotes vascularization in MRSA-infected diabetic wounds. Chronic diabetic wounds complicated by multidrug-resistant bacterial infections remain a persistent clinical challenge, requiring advanced wound dressings that integrate effective antibacterial protection with tissue regeneration. Herein, we developed a biocompatible and crosslinker-free hydrogel system composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS), integrated with polydopamine-coated silver nanoparticles (Ag@PDA). The PDA coating, together with the hydrogel matrix, regulated Ag + release, thereby maintaining antibacterial activity while reducing silver-associated cytotoxicity. The resulting PVA/CS-Ag@PDA hydrogel exhibited favorable mechanical properties, tissue adhesion, cytocompatibility, antioxidant activity, and broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacy. In vitro and in vivo experiments collectively demonstrated the pro-regenerative and immunomodulatory effects of the hydrogel. In vitro, the hydrogel promoted endothelial cell migration and regulated macrophage inflammatory responses, as evidenced by reduced pro-inflammatory markers and enhanced repair-associated gene expression. In an MRSA-infected diabetic rat wound model, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA treatment suppressed bacterial growth, attenuated inflammatory infiltration, downregulated pro-inflammatory genes including Il6 and Tnf, and upregulated repair-associated genes including Il10 and Mrc1. Moreover, Ag@PDA endowed the hydrogel with concentration-dependent near-infrared (NIR)-triggered photothermal behavior. Among the tested formulations, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA0.5 generated a moderate and stable photothermal response and was selected for NIR-assisted antibacterial treatment. Under NIR irradiation, PVA/CS-Ag@PDA0.5 further enhanced bacterial eradication against MRSA and E. coli . NIR-assisted treatment also reduced CD45 + inflammatory cell infiltration and CD68 + macrophage accumulation, enhanced CD206-associated reparative signaling, and improved epidermal remodeling, collagen deposition. This work presents a rational strategy for engineering silver-based hydrogel dressings with controlled Ag + release, NIR-enhanced antibacterial activity, and improved regenerative efficacy for infected diabetic wound repair. Study on Preparation of Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Aerogel with Graphene−Intercalated Attapulgite(GO−ATP@CS−PVA) and Adsorption Properties of Crystal Violet Dye

Weikai Sun,Hongxiang Ou,Ziwei Chen

Adsorption is one of the effective methods of treating dye wastewater. However, the selection of suitable adsorbent materials is the key to treating dye wastewater. In this paper, GO−ATP was prepared by an intercalation method by inserting graphene oxide (GO) into the interlayer of alabaster attapulgite (ATP), and GO−ATP@CS−PVA aerogel was prepared by co−blending−crosslinking with chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) for the adsorption and removal of crystalline violet dye from the solution. The physicochemical properties of the materials are characterized by various methods. The results showed that the layer spacing of the GO−ATP increased from 1.063 nm to 1.185 nm for the ATP, and the specific surface area was 187.65 m2·g−1, which was 45.7% greater than that of the ATP. The FTIR results further confirmed the success of the GO−ATP intercalation modification. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results show that the aerogel has good thermal stability properties. The results of static adsorption experiments show that at 302 K and pH 9.0, the adsorption capacity of the GO−ATP@CS−PVA aerogel is 136.06 mg·g−1. The mass of the aerogel after adsorption−solution equilibrium is 11.4 times that of the initial mass, with excellent adsorption capacity. The quasi−secondary kinetic, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models can better describe the adsorption process of the aerogel. The biobased composite aerogel GO−ATP@CS−PVA has good swelling properties, a large specific surface area, easy collection and a low preparation cost. The good network structure gives it unique resilience. The incorporation of clay as a nano−filler can also improve the mechanical properties of the composite aerogel.

Molecular origin of the plasticizing effect difference of glycerol with other polyols on plasticizing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as elucidated by solid-state NMR

Jiayu Xie,Xuran Jin,Hong Cheng,Wei Chen,Wancheng Yu,Linlin Wang

Glycerol has been proved to be an effective plasticizer for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), which can significantly increase PVA’s processability and ductility, whose molecular origin remains unclear. In current study, the physical structure and chain dynamics of polyol plasticized PVA were studied in detail, including ethylene glycol , glycerol, erythritol , xylitol , and sorbitol under the same addition level. The glycerol plasticized PVA exhibits the most significant reduction in Young’s modulus, enhanced superior toughness, and the lowest melting temperature (195 °C) as compared with other polyols. The molecular mechanism was elucidated through comprehensive analysis, with a particular focus on solid state NMR (SS NMR) results. The physical structure was first elucidated by the Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (WAXS). The crystallinity of the glycerol plasticized PVA was the lowest 29 % by WAXS and the thickness of the amorphous layer was the largest 7.76 nm by SAXS among different plasticized PVA films. This suggests the significant influence of glycerol on structure change of PVA. The molecular dynamics information was further accessed by Low Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (LF NMR), where two key features are obtained: i) Different dynamics dimensionality. The 1 H spin diffusion NMR was used to check the dimensionality from the aspect of chain dynamics. Compared with other plasticizers, LF NMR result shows that glycerol plasticized PVA has a two-dimensional (2D) structure; ii) Chain dynamics heterogeneity in the interphase . With respect to the chain dynamics heterogeneity in the interphase, the glycerol plasticized PVA shows the most heterogeneous dynamics, with the lowest ratio of the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF) of 0.507 in the interphase. Current study provides a versatile analytical strategy to quantify the plasticizing effect.

Self-catalyzed engineering of chelating sites onto a GO/PVA photothermal membrane: A strategy for synergistic solar desalination and thorough heavy metal removal

Yonghang Yu,Xiaocheng Bao,Cui Du,Kaiwei Chen,Dedong Ji,Chen Zhou,Shengyang Yang

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has emerged as a highly promising route, leveraging abundant solar energy for efficient desalination. However, many existing solar evaporators still face challenges such as salt accumulation and, crucially, fail to reduce heavy metal concentrations to the ultra-low levels required by drinking water standards. To address this gap, we have developed a room-temperature fabricated graphene oxide/siloxane-PVA hydrogel (GO/SPH) evaporator wherein solar-driven evaporation works in synergy with integrated chelating amino groups to achieve the thorough removal of heavy metal ions concurrent with desalination. The optimized 3.0 wt% GO/SPH composite demonstrates a remarkable evaporation rate of 2.21 kg m −2  h −1 under 1 sun irradiation, a two-fold improvement over the pristine SPH. This exceptional dual-function performance is underpinned by its synergistic architecture. For solar evaporation, GO within the matrix acts as a highly efficient photothermal agent, achieving 91.4% conversion efficiency. Concurrently, for heavy metal remediation, amino ligands derived from the APTMS crosslinker enable the selective sequestration of Cu 2+ , Cr 3+ , Cd 2+ , and Pb 2+ ions through specific coordination chemistry. Crucially, the entire evaporator is stabilized by a hydrolytically stable Si O Si network, which ensures robust multi-cycle performance by retaining over 95% of its initial efficiency and preserving its decontamination integrity over extended operation.

Building of soft-hard compound brush in porous PVA/NH2@TAtZnO plural gel and the high-efficiency anti-interference removal on Pb(II)

Lingli Liu,Sheng Xu,Zhenxi Wang,Xiaoguang Chen,Meng Cao,Shangxi Zhang,Yang Liu,Jinlong Cui

In order to promote the heavy metal ions removal of porous gel adsorbent and protect the adsorbent from other pollutants in wastewater, the tetrapod ZnO whiskers (tZnO) modified by amino-chain brush was introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to prepare the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites with brush structure for toxic Pb(II) removal. The adsorption property, adsorption process and adsorption mechanism were studied by adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, SEM-EDS analysis and XPS analysis. And the anti-interference ability and anti-interference mechanism were researched by SEM-EDS analysis and XPS analysis. It was found that the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites displayed a soft-hard compound pore-brush structure and showed a good selective adsorption on Pb(II). The research of isotherms and kinetics indicated that the adsorption process was fitted well to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively, and the research of thermodynamics revealed the endothermic nature. The adsorption mechanism was inferred as the combination of predominant chemisorption and subsidiary physisorption. Comparing with the neat PVA matrix, the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites displayed a good anti-interference property on Pb(II) adsorption and showed an alleviative clogging pore-canal structure in the wastewater with SiO 2 NPs or PAC flocculants . The anti-interference intensity ΔQ and anti-interference factor χ were proposed to reflect the anti-interference ability of this adsorbent which was promoted with the increasing amino brush length or density. By the analysis of SEM-EDS and XPS, the anti-interference mechanism was explored as the steric-hinerance effect of tZnO hard brush to suspended SiO 2 NPs pollutant and the coordination effect of functional amino soft brush to soluble PAC pollutant. Besides, the prepared PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO adsorbent possessed a good reusability under multiple adsorption-desorption processes and also presented a well applicability in real water matrix. The research indicated the huge potential of prepared PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO adsorbent in heavy metal ions removal.
