Currently limited research reported the design of microfiltration (MF) membranes specially for handling complex food processing streams such as rough beer. This study aimed to address this knowledge gap by tailoring for the first time a new class of polyvinylidene fluoride/poly(vinyl butyral) (PVDF/PVB) blend MF membrane with highly controllable pore structure and improved anti-fouling properties, and demonstrate its potential in real rough beer filtration. Combining an unconventional nonsolvent thermally induced phase separation (NTIPS) method and a unique quinary dope solution ( i.e. , PVDF/PVB/PVP/DMAc/MgCl 2 ) with lower critical solution temperature (LCST) feature, the roles of PVB content and coagulation temperature were investigated in terms of pore structure characteristics and hydrophilicity. Although both the control PVDF membrane M0 without PVB and M6 with optimal 6.0 % PVB achieved similar turbidity removal (98–100 %), M6 exhibited enhanced permeance ranging from 27 % to 12 % with increasing simulated feed complexity from containing dextran only, yeast only to yeast/dextran mixture. The contribution of fouling of these key beer components was analyzed, indicating that the co-existence of yeast and dextran significantly aggravated fouling. Combining with membrane autopsy, in real rough beer filtration M6 showed permeance of 26.7 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 at 1 bar that was ∼70 % higher than M0. Although with ∼50 % less irreversible fouling than M0, water cleaning implemented on M6 only recovered 62.5 % of flux. The simultaneous investigations on alkaline cleaning and operating pressure found that: a reasonably low pressure seemed favorable, e.g., 63.6 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 at 0.2 bar, achieving up to flux recovery of ∼91 % with only ∼10 % contributed by irreversible fouling. Overall this study offers a facile yet practical strategy to tailor membranes for beer filtration, serving as an inspiration for designing future membrane processes for treating complex food processing and industry waste streams.

Robust omniphobic membranes have attracted great attention in improving the continuous service performance of the membrane distillation (MD) in treating high salinity wastewater. However, the fabrication of omniphobic membranes commonly undergoes complex procedures of modification including the construction of rough structures and post-modification using low-surface-energy substances. Herein, monolithic omniphobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were conveniently constructed by the combination of porous membranes possess particle stacking structure generated by a one-step vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) procedure with subsequent surface perfluorination modification. The water contact angle , soybean oil contact angle, and low-surface-tension ethanol contact angle of the perfluorinated modified membrane increased from 139.6°, 45°, and ∼0° of the original membrane to 153°, 141°, and 110°, respectively. In addition, the LEP of the perfluorinated membrane is as high as 0.32 MPa, which is higher than the 0.22 MPa of the original membrane. More importantly, the monolithic omniphobic membrane can maintain a stable water flux without deteriorating salt rejection rate during the entire MD testing due to its high specific surface area, high porosity, three-dimensional micro/nano hierarchical structure, and adjustable pore size. This study offers useful insights for constructing monolithic omniphobic membranes for efficient and robust MD processes without additional nanoparticle loading procedure.

PVDF/TiO 2 @CQDs hybrid photocatalytic thin films were prepared by ink-jet printing. The printing ink was prepared with the TiO 2 , TiO 2 (s)@CQDs (surface composite), and TiO 2 (i)@CQDs (situ doping) nanoparticles as precursors, respectively. Compared to TiO 2 (s)@CQDs, TiO 2 (i)@CQDs has a smaller particle size (about 10.01 nm) and a narrower particle size distribution (6∼14 nm), which can improve the photocatalytic effect while avoiding nozzle clogging. The PVDF/TiO 2 (i)@CQDs hybrid film exhibited a high degradation efficiency ( η ) of 93.71 % for Rhodamine B (RhB) within 150 min under visible light with a catalyst load of only 0.49 wt%. The reaction rate constant ( ks ) of the PVDF/TiO 2 (i)@CQDs film was about 4.3 times higher than that of the PVDF/TiO 2 (s)@CQDs film. The small particle size of this S-scheme TiO 2 (i)@CQDs heterostructure nanoparticle and the more effective contact interface formed between TiO 2 and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) further facilitated electron transfer and enhanced photoactivity. The firmly immobilized catalysts on the Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) film substrate through Ti-F coordination bonds ensured the reusability and stability of the photocatalytic film (the η of RhB still reached 88.05 % after 10 consecutive cycles). This work provides a new strategy for the application of ink-jet printing technology in photocatalysis.

Recently, flexible pressure sensors rooting in piezoresistive mechanism have gained immense popularity due to their excellent application potential in the fields of software robotics, electronic skins and human health monitoring, etc. However, the trade-off between sensitivity and pressure range still remains challenging for the wide application of piezoresistive sensors . Herein, a novel flexible pressure sensor constructing from electrospun ionic liquids/Multi-walled carbon nanotubes/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (ILs/MWCNTs/PVDF) ternary composite that permits high-sensitivity detection over broad pressure range is implemented. Benefitting from the filamentous porous network coupled with urchin-shaped beads, the newly developed active ternary composite showed excellent compressibility and high sensitivity to pressure, endowing the resultant piezoresistive sensor with broad-pressure detection ranging from 1.0 Pa to 307 kPa with a maximum sensitivity of 0.075 kPa −1 . Simultaneously, the proposed sensor present fast response/recovery time of 120/80 ms and high operation stability over 14000 cyclic pressings. Also, the feasibility of sensor in effectively monitoring various physiological signals, recognizing keyboards and expressing spatial pressure distribution is demonstrated, implying their great potential as viable high-performance pressure sensor.

Piezoelectric materials can actively provide a bioelectric microenvironment by converting mechanical stimulations into electrical signals. Combining the excellent flexibility of piezoelectric polymers and the outstanding piezoelectric properties of piezoelectric ceramics, piezoelectric composites are attractive in tissue repair due to their high response to micromechanical stimulations. However, issues such as agglomeration, dielectric differences, and poor interfacial contact with polymers have limited the role of ceramics in improving the overall properties of the composites. In this work, functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs) are applied to disperse zinc oxide (ZnO) in the PVDF–TrFE matrix to prepare electrospun composite fiber films. Through the assistance of hydrogen bonding, F-MWCNTs act as bridges connecting ZnO nanoparticles with PVDF–TrFE, which improves the content and crystallinity of the β phase. Furthermore, this strategy enhances the local electric field and reduces dielectric differences, resulting in improved polarization and piezoelectric properties. Results show that the composite fiber film with 0.35 wt % F-MWCNTs could obtain an open-circuit voltage of up to 8.2 V, a β phase content of 83.36%, and a crystallinity of 57.63%. Meanwhile, due to the synergistic effect of F-MWCNTs and ZnO, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus are increased from 3.5 and 11.0 to 6.6 and 19.49 MPa, respectively. Additionally, cellular experiments show that composite fiber films have good bioactivity and promote cell proliferation and adhesion, especially with 0.35 wt % F-MWCNTs. In conclusion, the composite fiber film possesses good piezoelectric and mechanical properties and enhances the cellular activity, making it a good tissue engineering scaffold.

Here, polyaniline/polyvinylidene fluoride (PANI/PVDF) nanofiber composite membrane was fabricated using electrostatic spinning technology to remove hexavalent chromium Cr(VI). The employment of PANI not only extremely enhanced the hydrophilic property of the nanofiber membrane, but also facilitated the transfer of Cr 2 O 7 2− from water to the membrane. The PANI/PVDF membrane had an extremely excellent performance in getting rid of Cr(VI) and a quite large flux (250 L/m 2 h). The maximum adsorption quantity of the membrane could reach 334.5 mg/g in which adsorption played 52.12% part and reduction played 47.87% part. The removal rate could reach nearly 100% immediately in the permeate solution under filtration while it needed 240 min to reach 100% only by static adsorption. Therefore, the interception of the membrane and the adsorption reduction of PANI had synergistic effect on removal of Cr(VI). Furthermore, the removal rate of Cr(VI) could still reach 95.97% after reused 8 times. The membrane showed a very good reusability and application prospect. Graphical Abstract

The high-performance hydrophobic membranes are crucial for the practical application of membrane distillation (MD). The fluorination treatment or inorganic particle incorporation has been widely applied for improving the hydrophobicity of membrane surface. However, the economic and facile method for the fabrication of hydrophobic membranes is still urgently needed. In this study, the fluorinated graphene oxide (FGO) nanosheets were synthesized and used as hydrophobic additives for the polyvinylidenefluoride (PVDF) electrospun nanofiber membrane. The membrane hydrophobicity was greatly improved after the addition of FGO nanosheets due to their inherent strong hydrophobicity and the induced formation of finer nanofibers. In comparison to the control membrane (pristine PVDF membrane), the water flux of the proposed composite membrane with superior salt rejection efficiency of 99.9% was increased by 41.5% (22.2 L/m 2 .h) when treating 3.5 wt% NaCl solution at the temperature difference of 40 °C. The excellent stability of the prepared membrane was verified by a 120-h continuous AGMD operation. The findings from this study demonstrates the FGO nanosheets could be considered as promising materials for the fabrication of high-performance AGMD membranes to promote the application of large-scale AGMD in the desalination and water treatment.

In recent years, the electrodialysis (ED) technology has gained substantial attention for its role in recovering sulfuric acid from industrial wastewater. However, the typical anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been known to exhibit notable proton leakage during ED, which can severely hinder the efficiency of acid concentration. To overcome this issue, we utilized a substrate made of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP). This choice capitalizes on the presence of fluorine-containing groups for enhanced acid stability and tertiary amine groups to minimize water content, resulting in a significant improvement in proton-blocking capabilities of the AEMs. It is worth noting that, through a combination of partial cross-linking and quaternization, these AEMs not only maintain their acid concentration performance but also substantially reduce energy consumption. Additionally, we conducted a thorough analysis of the delicate balance between current efficiency and energy consumption in acid recovery systems. In contrast to conventional AEMs and commercially available proton-blocking membranes such as ACM, we highlight the exceptional acid concentration capability ( C H + = 1.28 M) and the low energy consumption (3.3 kWh/kg) of AEM-1.2. This research breakthrough marks a significant advancement in the development of acid-blocking AEMs and strongly advocates for more efficient sulfuric acid recovery from industrial wastewater.

Photocatalytic composite membranes (BPMs) are preferred materials for wastewater treatment due to their high photocatalytic activity and ease of recovery. However, conventional blending modification methods for preparing BPMs often lead to drawbacks such as uneven distribution of photocatalysts, low loading efficiency, facile detachment of photocatalysts, poor reusability, and a limited specific surface area of the membranes. These issues significantly diminish their photocatalytic activity and restrict their practical applications. To address these challenges, this thesis introduces a novel preparation method for PVP-modified PVDF/BiOBr photocatalytic membranes, using a combination of electrospinning and solvothermal techniques. This approach enhances the stability of BiOBr microspheres on the PVDF nanofiber membranes, effectively tackling the issue of loading powder photocatalysts. These membranes, composed of PVDF nanofibers and uniformly sized BiOBr microspheres, exhibit a significant specific surface area of 15.69 m 2 /g. The modified PVDF/BiOBr photocatalytic membranes demonstrate remarkable degradation efficiencies: 100 % degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in 25 min, 93.8 % degradation of tetracycline (TC) in 30 min, and 74.6 % degradation of hexavalent chromium ions (Cr 6+ ) in 60 min. Moreover, after five cyclic experiments, the photocatalytic degradation rate of sample M 3 remains above 99 % with a minimal loss rate of only 0.5 %. The method developed for preparing PVDF/BiOBr photocatalytic membranes represents a universally applicable and straightforward strategy for fabricating advanced membrane materials. This preparation technique not only provides innovative design ideas and fabrication methods for new photocatalytic materials but also extends to other functional materials. The PVDF/BiOBr photocatalytic membrane materials hold great promise in offering technical and theoretical support for photocatalytic wastewater treatment.

For all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), polymer-blended solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) have drawn wide interest owing to their significance in improving the interfacial solid-solid contacts and inhibiting the growth of lithium dendrites . In this work, SCEs based on PVDF-HFP/PMMA matrix containing MOFs (NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)) and LiTFSI were designed and synthesized employing an easy solution casting method. The synthesized samples were examined by XRD , SEM, EDS , and electrochemical tests. It was found that MPP-2 SCE not only has excellent ionic conductivity at 60 °C of 5.54 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , but also exhibits superior interfacial compatibility in Li||Li symmetric batteries , which can constantly cycle for about 800 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 with no short-circuiting. The assembled Li|MPP-2|LiFePO 4 cell exhibited a first discharge specific capacity of up to 157.1 mAh g −1 at 60 °C and 0.2 C. This work may help to further advance the progress of ASSLBs in the future.

As an important part of the fields such as renewable energy and electric vehicles, electrochemical energy storage technology faces significant challenges in improving energy density , extending battery life and improving safety. We successfully prepared a composite battery separator of polyvinylidene fluoride-chlorotrifluorinylene (PVDF-CTFE) and fluorinated polyimide (F-PI) -based materials, mixed it with different contents of boehmite nanoparticles , and then modified it by different doses of electron beam irradiation to improve the performance, especially to overcome the problem of maintaining capacity decline in high-speed charging environment. The results showed that the prepared battery separators exhibited outstanding thermal stability, electrochemical properties and ionic conductivity with 12 % boehmite nanoparticles . After 1000 high-speed charge and discharge cycles in current density of 10C, the battery based on the modified separator still maintained a capacity retention rate of 84.4 %, with the initial discharge specific capacity of 111.9 mAhg −1 . This means that irradiated separators not only maintain a high energy density in a high-speed charging environment, but also overcome the problem of maintaining capacity decline. Electron beam irradiation further improved the comprehensive performance of the separator. After 1000 and 1500 cycles at the current density of 10C and 15C, the specific discharge capacity of the battery can still retain more than 90 % and 80 % of the initial specific discharge capacity, which provides a longer life in practical applications.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric nanofibers gain significant attention for flexible electronic devices, yet their low piezoelectric conversion efficiency remains a critical barrier to broader application. In this study, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are combined with fullerene (C60) to form a distinctive “grape-like” nanostructure (MC), which is then embedded into the PVDF matrix via electrospinning to produce PVDF/MC composite nanofibers. The incorporation of MC increases the β-phase content of the PVDF nanofibers by 11.07%, enhancing their piezoelectric properties, and also acts as localized conductive domains and stress concentration centers, synergistically boosting the output performance of the piezoelectric devices. Consequently, piezoelectric devices based on PVDF/MC-3 wt % composite nanofibers exhibit voltage and current outputs 559.1% and 1382.8% higher than those of pure PVDF, respectively. This innovative strategy of leveraging “grape-like” nanostructures to enhance PVDF’s piezoelectric performance represents a promising pathway toward achieving efficient energy conversion in piezoelectric materials.
