The 5 wt% Ru/AC catalysts were prepared using the impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by N2 physical adsorption, XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM and ICP-AES. The catalytic activity and stability of the catalysts in decomposing hydroxylamine nitrate (HAN) and hydrazine nitrate (HN) in nitric acid were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the Ru/AC catalyst effectively decomposed HAN and HN with complete conversion under moderate reaction conditions (60–90 °C). When used for an extended duration of 1580 hours in radioactive nitric acid waste liquid, this catalyst displayed a remarkable processing capacity of 6.32 kilograms per gram of catalyst. Due to its environmentally friendly nature resulting from harmless gas product formation along with its simple device structure design, this protocol offers practicality and economic attractiveness.

Bioorthogonal reactions present a promising strategy for minimizing off-target toxicity in cancer chemotherapy, yet a dependable nanoplatform is urgently required. Here, we have fabricated an acid-responsive polymer micelle for the specific delivery and activation of the prodrug within tumor cells through Ru catalyst-mediated bioorthogonal reactions. The decomposition of micelles, triggered by the cleavage of the hydrazone bond in the acidic lysosomal environment, facilitated the concurrent release of Alloc-DOX and the Ru catalyst within the cells. Subsequently, the uncaging process of Alloc-DOX was demonstrated to be induced by the high levels of glutathione within tumor cells. Notably, the limited glutathione inside normal cells prevented the conversion of Alloc-DOX into active DOX, thereby minimizing the toxicity toward normal cells. In tumor-bearing mice, this nanoplatform exhibited enhanced efficacy in tumor suppression while minimizing off-target toxicity. Our study provides an innovative approach for in situ drug activation that combines safety and effectiveness in cancer chemotherapy.

The nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) represents a promising route for water treatment and NH3 generation. This process involves the deoxygenation of NO3− to form nitrite (NO2−), followed by its subsequent hydrogenation. However, discrepancies in the rates of these two steps result in a decrease in faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH3 yield rate. Herein, we demonstrated a tandem catalyst of (Cu7/Ag3)7-Ru3/C achieving a high NH3 yield rate of 3.45 mmol h−1 cm−2 (2.30 mol gcat−1 h−1) and a FE of 93.48% at −0.9 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode. The Cu/Ag heterostructure greatly enhanced the conversion of NO3− to NO2− over a wide potential window due to the synergistic effect, while Ru, selectively adsorbing NO2−, provided active hydrogen derived from water hydrolysis to facilitate NH3 synthesis. Furthermore, (Cu7/Ag3)7-Ru3/C exhibited stable performance in a membrane electrode assembly over 60 hours, achieving an average NH3 yield rate of 6.90 mmol h−1. The ammonium chloride solid product was successfully obtained using an air stripping methodology. In situ characterization revealed that the surface microenvironment of Ru influenced the adsorption configuration of *NO and on-top adsorbed NO was more favorable for ammonia synthesis compared to bridge-adsorbed NO. The overall reaction pathway involved stepwise deoxygenation to form *N and subsequent gradual hydrogenation.

A sensor for H2O2 and H2O2-related reactant was constructed with oligonucleotides and Ru(bipy)2dppx2+ (bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine, dppx = 7,8-dimethyl-dipyridophenazine), which was performed by converting the H2O2-induced DNA cleavage into the change of luminescence. The ‘DNA light switch’ Ru(bipy)2dppx2+ could emit strong luminescence in the presence of dsDNA. DNA cleavage occurred upon addition of H2O2 due to the Fenton reaction, which resulted in the decrease of the luminescence of Ru(bipy)2dppx2+. Therefore, the luminescence intensity depended on the concentration of H2O2 and H2O2-related reactants, and the detection limits for H2O2, uric acid and cholesterol were 0.20 μM, 0.46 μM and 1.25 μM, respectively. The recovery varied between 94.0% and 105.0% when the assay was applied to the determination of uric acid and cholesterol in biological samples, which demonstrated the good practicability of the assay.

The characteristic hypoxia of solid tumors seriously reduced the treatment efficacy of oxygen-dependent photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, an oxygen nanogenerator, comprising Ru-based nanomaterials, CS–DA@Ru nanoparticles (NPs), has been constructed to relieve tumor hypoxia along with photodynamic/photothermal therapy for efficient tumor eradication. CS–DA@Ru NPs possess targeting ability and act as catalase-mimic nanozymes to decompose endogenous hydrogen peroxide in the tumor to produce O2. The broad absorbance of CS–DA@Ru NPs in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) region enabled them to possess good photothermal properties and photoacoustic (PA) imaging ability. CS–DA@Ru NPs could generate enough hyperthermia and enormous amounts of 1O2 under NIR-II laser irradiation. Specifically, CS–DA@Ru NPs exhibit catalase-like activity as well as a significantly augmented antitumor efficacy through synergistic PTT/PDT guided by NIR-II PA imaging in both cells and in vivo experiments. This work will advance the development of noble metal nanozymes in enhancing the efficacy of O2-dependent antitumor modalities.

In this work, Ru(bpy) 3 2+ -loaded gold nanocage (AuNCs) (Ru–AuNCs) was prepared and found to display a distinct property of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) enhancement under mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) interaction. Based on this, we designed a screen-printed bipolar electrode-ECL (SPBPE-ECL) sensing platform by coupling with the thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine (T-Hg 2+ -T) binding pattern for one-step highly sensitive detection of Hg 2+ . This ECL sensor showed a wide linear detection range (0.75 – 850 μg L −1 ) and low detection limit (0.1290 μg L −1 ) toward Hg 2+ , with a one-step detection procedure and disposable feature, displaying potential applicability in the point-of-care-testing (POCT) of Hg 2+ in the environment. In addition, the Hg 2+ -mediated ECL signal enhancement mechanism of Ru–AuNCs was also investigated. It was confirmed that Hg 2+ interaction etched the cage structure of Ru–AuNCs, which sped up the release of more Ru(bpy) 3 2+ around the sensing electrode. Furthermore, Au–Hg alloy structure was formed on the surface of Ru–AuNCs, which also improved the ECL signal. This target-induced in-situ sensing material surface reconstruction strategy would provide a better design concept for the construction of ECL POCT sensor.

The difficulty of nitride modification is to develop simple and efficient strategies to induce defects and efficiently capture Ru atoms. With these in mind, this work innovatively constructed a Ru-Co 3 O 4 /CoN-L catalyst with abundant anion defects (oxygen vacancies (V O ) and nitrogen vacancies (V N )) using the nitridation-quenching-Ru doping strategy. Surprisingly, the porous structure provided more active sites, and the V N and V O were conducive to promoting the anchoring of Ru atoms. These significantly improved the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performances of the Ru-Co 3 O 4 /CoN/NF-L catalyst. The density functional theory results showed that the anion defects optimized the hydrogen adsorption capacity of the Ru active sites for the HER. Furthermore, Ru dopants and anion defects reduced the OER energy barrier of the Co-active sites, accelerating the HER and OER kinetics. This study proposes a new concept for defect construction and nitride-structure optimization.

Ruthenium, one of the platinum group elements, plays a crucial role in industrial development, and it is important to develop a material to separate and purify ruthenium with high efficiency to ensure its supply. Herein, a thermoresponsive Ru(III)-imprinted polymer (Ru(III)-TIIP) was prepared by combining thermoresponsive technology, Pickering emulsion technology, and imprinted technology. The Ru(III)-TIIP could regulate its structure by controlling the external temperature and maintained good adsorption and separation performance. The structure and performances of Ru(III)-TIIP were tested and evaluated by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, specific surface area, porosity analysis, zeta potential, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The results showed that the maximum adsorption capacity (Q) of Ru(III)-TIIP was 0.2203 mmol/g under 33 °C. The maximum desorption rate (D %) was 78.1%, which was reached at 25 °C. When Fe(III) was used as the interfering ion, the separation degree (R) of Ru(III)-TIIP was 3.2. Meanwhile, the study of the adsorption process of Ru(III)-TIIP to Ru(III) was more suitable to be expressed by pseudo-first-order kinetics and the Langmuir model. When Ru(III)-TIIP was applied to the platinum group catalyst leach solution, the content of platinum group elements ranged from 53.72 to 82.09% after one adsorption/desorption cycle. In addition, Ru(III)-TIIP had maintained 66.14 and 81.25% of the original capacity for Q and R after 11 adsorption/desorption cycles.

Simultaneous oxidation of soot and CH 4 emitted from natural gas-diesel dual fuel engine is a new challenge. Herein, a robust catalyst of binary Ru-Pd components supported on three-dimensional ordered macro-mesoporous cerium-zirconium oxide (RuPd/3DOMM-CZO) is elaborately constructed. Ordered macro-mesopore structure in novel hierarchical porous cerium-zirconium oxide can respectively enhance mass transfer of soot and gaseous reactants, and binary Ru-Pd active components can improve activation for NO and CH 4 . RuPd/3DOMM-CZO catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance and stability during simultaneous soot and CH 4 oxidation. Based on the results of characterizations and theoretical calculations, Ru site in binary Ru-Pd components is responsible for catalyzing NO oxidation to NO 2 , which is key step of NO x -assisted soot oxidation mechanism, while Pd site can activate the C-H bond of CH 4 for boosting oxidation to CO 2 ; the catalytic cooperation between Ru and Pd atoms can promote the rate-determining step to realize simultaneous oxidation of soot and CH 4 .

Lattice oxygen participation mechanism (LOM) can break the conventional adsorption scaling limitations to boost electrocatalysis performance and has been utilized to design promising single-phase oxides that generally show favorable bulk oxygen-ion diffusion capability. In pure-phase materials, bulk oxygen vacancies could act as oxygen-ion diffusion channels, implying rich bulk oxygen vacancies at the interfaces of hybrid-phase composites may further boost LOM. Here, by designing hybrid Co2.5Ru0.5Ox hollow nanotubes with rich two-phase interfaces, we report a phenomenon of interfacial LOM. Such hollow nanotubes (∼10 nm wall thickness), composed of spinel Co3O4-x-rutile RuO2-x interfaces, exhibiting a low overpotential of 430 mV and a long-term stability of 1000 h at 500 mA cm–2 for oxygen-evolving reaction (OER) in near-industrial alkaline solutions (6 M KOH). The constructed anion exchange membrane electrolyzer requires only 1.82 V to achieve a 1 A cm–2. Interfacial Co/Ru atomic interactions trigger Co–O–Ru motifs to undergo self-optimization during OER through oxidizing Co/Ru ions and narrowing bond length to create short synergetic active sites, while interfacial oxygen vacancies act as ion-diffusion pathways. Combined mechanism experiments and computations unravel the exceptional interfacial LOM processes. Additionally, the hollow nanotube structure promotes OH– adsorption, serving as a beneficial driving force for interfacial LOM.

Urea oxidation reaction (UOR) kinetics is severely limited by suboptimal intermediate adsorption, which can be significantly improved by modulating catalyst spin configurations. Herein, we report an effective strategy for reforming the Ru spin configuration in pyrochlore oxide Y 2 Ru 2 O 7 (YRO) to enhance UOR performance through gradient orbital coupling. By partially substituting Y with Sm, we precisely regulate the electronic structure of candidate Y 1.9 Sm 0.1 Ru 2 O 7 (YRO-Sm), transforming Ru spin configuration from the low spin to the high spin (HS) configuration. The HS configuration endows YRO-Sm with excellent UOR activity (1.43 V at j = 100 mA cm −2 ) and robust stability. Theoretical analysis reveals that Sm substitution leads to a significant Sm(4 f)–O(2p)–Ru(4d) orbital electron coupling effect. The highly degenerate 4 f orbitals of Sm enhance Ru–O covalency and Ru electron localization in YRO-Sm, facilitating *COO intermediate dissociation and thereby lowering the energy barrier for UOR. The practical potential of YRO-Sm was further demonstrated through its successful integration into both a hybrid water electrolyzer for energy-saving hydrogen production and a urea-assisted zinc–air battery. This work demonstrates a promising pathway for developing high-performance pyrochlore catalysts via spin state engineering for sustainable energy conversion applications.

The timely and specific detection is crucial for determining bacterial illnesses and tracing their source. Nanozyme-based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) provides a feasible pathway to improve the sensing performance, but controlling nanozymes’ catalytic capability and employing them for sensitively detecting bacteria are extremely challenging. Herein, a synergistic catalysis nanozyme (PBA@Ru NCs) is designed by doping ruthenium nanoclusters (Ru NCs) on Prussian blue analog nanocubes (PBA NCs) through a self-assembling procedure. According to the theoretical calculation, the Ru NCs will spontaneously dissociate H 2 O 2 to form adsorbed O and H 2 O, which creates a new non-radical pathway to oxidize 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and provides a special route different from PBA NCs to generate OH. This approach overcomes the inherent deficiencies of pure PBA NCs and Ru NCs to achieve good dispersibility, efficient peroxidase-like activity, and enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency. When PBA@Ru NCs are prepared as a detecting probe, the developed LFIA platform achieves a high-sensitive colorimetric assay for Escherichia coli O157:H7, where the naked-eye limit of detection after catalysis is 87 CFU mL −1 , displaying great potential for high-sensitivity bacteria detection. This work provides guidance for constructing nanozymes with efficient catalytic activities and develops their promising applications in the LFIA platform.
