Osteochondral defects pose significant challenges in joint health, leading to pain, decreased mobility, and substantial healthcare costs due to surgical interventions. This study aimed to develop and evaluate Si-A/PUE@HA composite hydrogels as scaffolding materials for cartilage tissue engineering, addressing the limitations of current treatment options. Utilizing a multi-step synthesis method that incorporates both chemical and physical crosslinking techniques, we assessed the hydrogels’ cytocompatibility, chondrogenic differentiation potential, immunomodulatory properties, and in vivo cartilage regeneration capabilities. In vitro results demonstrated high cell viability and proliferation rates of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) cultured in Si-A/PUE@HA hydrogels, with significant expression of chondrogenic markers such as Acan, Sox9, and Col2a1. Notably, the hydrogels exhibited a favorable immunomodulatory effect, promoting an anti-inflammatory M2 macrophage phenotype, which is crucial for tissue regeneration. In vivo studies confirmed substantial new tissue formation and integration with surrounding cartilage, as evidenced by micro-CT analysis, alongside excellent biocompatibility with no significant adverse effects observed in major organs over a 12-week period. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis revealed a favorable immune microenvironment and enhanced chondrogenesis linked to hydrogel treatment. In conclusion, Si-A/PUE@HA hydrogels represent a promising biomaterial with potential applications in cartilage repair and regenerative medicine, warranting further investigation in larger clinical trials to validate their efficacy and safety for future therapeutic use. An innovative two-step approach of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) was developed to rapidly fabricate MoSi 2 and Mo(Al,Si) 2 ceramics for high-temperature anti-oxidation applications. The SHS process predominantly promoted the synthesis of high-purity and high-yield MoSi 2 and Mo(Si,Al) 2 phases in the alloyed powders. Subsequently, dense and crack-free MoSi 2 and Mo(Al,Si) 2 ceramics were produced using SPS. 1500 °C oxidation tests of the ceramics (100 h) revealed the formation of a protective SiO 2 oxide layer on the surface of MoSi 2 ceramics, while an Al-Si-O composite glassy oxide layer formed on Mo(Si,Al) 2 ceramics, which exhibited better thermal stability and lower oxygen permeability compared to the single SiO 2 oxide layer. However, an excessive Al content (>0.05 at.%) compromised the oxidation resistance due to the emergence of a Si-depleted Mo 5 (Si,Al) 3 layer with inferior oxidation resistance, which was caused by the high-temperature diffusion of Si. Therefore, via this novel two-step SHS-SPS technique compact and crack-free Mo(Si,Al) 2 ceramics can be rapidly synthesized at high temperatures. When trace amount of Al was added (0.05 at.%), Mo(Si 0.95 Al 0.05 ) 2 showed optimum high-temperature oxidation resistance.

The acidity and pore structure of zeolite catalysts play a crucial role in the selectivity and stability of C4 alkylation due to the synergistic effect of reaction activity and diffusion. Herein, the effect of three acidic beta zeolites with different Si/Al ratios on adsorption, diffusion, and catalytic performance was studied using experiments and molecular simulations. The beta zeolite with the lower Si/Al ratio leads to the faster relative diffusion of isobutane to 1-butene and the smaller adsorption amount of alkylate products. Furthermore, the diffusion of molecules in the zigzag channel along the z direction of beta zeolites is much slower than other two directions. The experimental results indicate that lower Si/Al ratio cause the higher content of strong BAS in the zeolite, resulting in the higher hydride activity and the longer catalytic lifetime. This work provides a theoretical basis for the development of high catalytic activity zeolite catalysts.

High-valent iron-oxo complexes show promise as green oxidants for water remediation, but suffer from critical limitations in stability and pH adaptability. Herein, we report a facile method to synthesize amorphous SiO 2 -stabilized high-valent iron-oxo complexes via Na + diffusion activation of iron/silicon-rich copper smelting slag. In the complex, the synergistic coexistence of two distinct silica‑oxygen tetrahedral configurations-basic Na 2 SiO 3 and acidic SiO 2 oxides establishes a self-regulating pH buffering system that stabilizes solution neutrality. This unique structural design ensures sustained oxidative activity of the complex, representing a significant advancement over conventional silica-supported catalysts due to its intrinsic acid-base regulatory capability. Thus, the deactivations of the oxidants including the proton-induced self-decomposition and the hydrolysis of iron by hydroxyl groups can be efficiently inhibited, thereby expanding the pH applicability (3–11). High-valent iron species can be continuously regenerated during peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-triggered reactions for the selective and efficient oxidation degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC, 98.01% in 15 min) via non-radical pathway. Through methyl phenyl sulfoxide-directed oxidation, electron spin resonance, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, the stabilizing mechanism of silicon was elucidated, confirming that the high valent iron-oxo act as the dominant active species. This work advances both hazardous waste valorization and high valent iron-oxo complex engineering, offering a robust solution for organic pollutant removal in complex aquatic environments.

Ethylbenzene is the major side product in benzene alkylation with methanol and it is difficult to be suppressed over hierarchical porous ZSM-5. Moreover, the separation of ethylbenzene from xylene still remains a great challenge. Our research indicated that ethylbenzene formation could be highly suppressed by changing the Si/Al ratio of the catalyst. Hierarchical porous ZSM-5 catalysts with different Si/Al ratios were prepared via reducing the amount of Al in the solvent evaporation assisted dry gel conversion method. In this method, tetra-n-propylammonium hydroxide was used as the direct agent to create micropores, and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane was added to create additional porosities by forming organic assemblies which occupied a certain space between zeolitic walls. The catalyst with a Si/Al ratio of 1800 could achieve high benzene conversion (59.5%) and high xylene selectivity (39.0%) as well as excellent suppression of ethylbenzene formation (<0.1%).

Phase pure and nano-sized hafnium diboride (HfB 2 ) fine powder was prepared via a novel sustainable silicothermic route at 1100°C from inexpensive raw materials HfO 2 , Na 2 B 4 O 7 and Si. By introducing sodium oxysalts as source of Na 2 O into the batch mixtures, the SiO 2 / Na 2 O modulus in the melt were reduced from 5:1 to 2:1, and the original water-insoluble byproduct SiO 2 was taken by the melt at test temperature and converted into water soluble sodium silicate (Na 2 Si 2 O 5 ) which was easily removed from the reacted mass via simple hot water washing. Consequently, the aqua sodium silicate could be readily recycled and used as a precursor for preparing many other valuable materials due to absence of foreign salts (eg halides, especially in the molten salt-assisted synthesis process) in the synthesis process, and the relevant environmental concerns could be alleviated. Using excessive amount of 20 wt% Si and 15 wt% Na 2 B 4 O 7 as compensation for the evaporation loss of silicon, in the form of SiO (g), and B 2 O 3 in the reduction process, a high reaction extent was achieved and HfO 2 and Na 2 B 4 O 7 were completely converted into HfB 2 at 1100°C.

Silicon (Si) is considered to be one of the alternative anode candidates for lithium-ion batteries due to the high theoretical capacity. Enhancing the columbic efficiency, cycle stability, alleviating the pulverization and decreasing the manufacturing cost are the major challenges that procrastinate the commercialization of Si anode . Inspirited by spiderweb structure, the Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) was encapsulated by the multifunctional binder citric acid (CA) which can effectively prevent the continuous formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. Similar to the spiders, the SiNPs@CA particles anchors on the graphene oxide (GO) sheets through chemical bond which inhibit the irreversible sliding of SiNPs and maintain a stable and tough structure of electrode during the charge/discharge process. Therefore, this SiNPs@CA@GO anode retains a capacity of 2566 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 1 A g −1 with a superb initial coulombic efficiency of 81%. In addition, the Li + diffusion coefficient of the composite was calculated to be 10 −8 -10 −10 cm 2 s −1 by EIS and GITT methods, which further demonstrates the excellent electrochemical performance of the composite. Thus, the low-temperature and easily scaled-up fabrication technique with robust non-toxic binder system enables this SiNPs@CA@GO anode suitable for commercial application.

Silicon is considered as an ideal anode material for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high specific capacity, low lithiation potential, and high natural abundance. However, its potential application is greatly restricted by poor electrical conductivity and large volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation processes. Herein, a novel solid-state reaction route is developed to synthesize a silicon/carbon nanotubes/carbon (Si/CNTs/C) composite by directly reacting magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) with lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). This method realizes synchronous formation of Si, CNTs, and amorphous carbon with a good interfacial configuration. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that MgO may be responsible for the in situ growth of CNTs during the chemical reaction process. The crystalline Si particles are encapsulated by CNTs and the amorphous carbon matrix, which not only accommodates the volume expansion of Si but also enhances the integral electronic conductivity. Consequently, the Si/CNTs/C composite exhibits a high reversible capacity (702 mA h g–1 at 0.2 A g–1), excellent rate performance (420 mA h g–1 at 5 A g–1), and long cycling life (over 1500 cycles) when used as an anode for LIBs. Notably, this research might provide a new strategy for large-scale synthesis and utilization of Si/C composites in high-performance LIBs.

As a promising anode material for next-generation high-energy density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), one of the main technical issues for silicon (Si) electrodes is the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). By a pre-lithiation process, preparation of lithium–silicon (Li–Si) alloy electrodes can efficiently improve the ICE, thus leading to excellent electrochemical performance. Herein, with solid wastes as precursors, we report a cost-efficient approach for the fabrication of Li3.25Si anode materials via simple magnesiothermic reduction and then mechanical alloy reaction methods, combining the advantages of low-cost and high ICE. The prepared Li3.25Si@acetylene black (Li3.25Si@A) electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance with a high reversible capacity of 1138.9 mA h g−1 over 90 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and its ICE is as high as 107.7%, which is superior to that of the commercial Li3.25Si@A electrode. With a simple and low-cost manufacturing process and high ICE, the fabrication process will be definitely meaningful in achieving low-cost and high-capacity anode materials with a prolonged cycle life.

Due to its highest theoretical capacity and low discharge potential, silicon (Si) has attracted increasing attention as one of the most promising anodes for lithium-ion batteries. However, the practical application of Si-based materials is still hindered by rapid capacity fading caused by the huge volume changes of Si during cycling. Herein, a flexible carbon nanotube (CNT)-constructed carbonaceous fibers network anchored with N-doped carbon-coated Si nanoparticles (C/Si/CNTs) has been fabricated. CNTs were sequentially bound together to form a fibrous structure and further crosslinked into a network by electrospinning method. The rational designed conductive network improves the electron transport, buffers the volume changes of inner Si nanoparticles and exhibits excellent mechanical flexibility. Utilized as flexible anodes for lithium-ion batteries, the C/Si/CNTs electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 696.8 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles at 100 mA g−1, and achieves 473.1 mA h g−1 at 500 mA g−1 (based on the total mass of the electrode). This approach provides a promising strategy to develop high performance silicon-based anode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries.

Various kinds of efforts have been devoted to ameliorate the serious volume-expansion effect and low electron conductivity of silicon-based materials in lithium ion batteries . Here, we report a facile high voltage sputtering process to prepare three-dimensional hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon coated Si microsphere to significantly improve the lithium storage performance. The structure and morphology of the as-obtained samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results indicate that the as-prepared composite is composed of silicon nanoparticles (∼100 nm) coated with conductive thin carbon layer (∼8.5 nm). The composite shows excellent lithium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 1565 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g −1 , as well as a long cycling performance at the high current density of 2 A g −1 . The facile preparation process and highly silicon-loading (∼78%) makes the prepared material be a great potential application in lithium-ion batteries.

TC4 (Ti–6Al–4V) nanoparticles (TC4NPs) and silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs) with a median size of 146 and 51 nm were prepared by sand milling from scrap produced by refining silicon and TC4. The SiNPs and TC4NPs are mixed, carbonized, and leached in different proportions to obtain Si@C/TiO2@C/Hollow-C anode materials. The special structure of the anode materials provided more space for the volume expansion of silicon. The anatase TiO2 in TC4NPs relieves the volume expansion and reduces the transfer impedance, and the lithiated TiO2 can promote the electrical conductivity of the Si@C/TiO2@C/Hollow-C anode during the charge/discharge process. Furthermore, the Si@C/TiO2@C/Hollow-C (SiNPs/TC4NPs = 2:1) electrode delivers excellent rate performance; after cycling at a series of higher current densities, 92% of the original level of the reversible capacity can be maintained. The Si@C/TiO2@C/Hollow-C (SiNPs/TC4NPs = 2:1) anode retains 558 mA h·g–1 after 400 cycles with a large current density of 1000 mA·g–1. The synthesis method of the Si@C/TiO2@C/Hollow-C anode is a low-cost, facile, and nontoxic process, endowing it with the potential for application as energy materials for mass production.
