A number of NO-releasing quinoline derivatives have been designed and synthesized by introducing NO donor to quinoline carboxylic acid fragment. The anti-proliferation of all target compounds was evaluated against human cancer cell lines (HCT-116, MCF-7, and A549), MCF-7/ADR and normal cell (MCF-10A). Most compounds showed cytotoxic activity on cancer cells and drug-resistant cells with IC 50 values in the range of 0.62–5.51 μM. Importantly, these compounds showed low toxicity to normal cells (4.21–34.08 μM). Further mechanism studies showed that the most potent compound 9 could release high concentration of NO and inhibit the activity of topoisomerase I. In addition, 9 regulated apoptosis-related proteins, generated ROS and blocked MCF-7 cells in G2/M phase to induce cell apoptosis. Furthermore, the P-gp-mediated transport was also influenced by 9 . And 9 could significantly inhibit the growth of tumor in vivo without observable organ-related toxicities. Overall, as a novel NO-releasing quinoline derivative, 9 was worthy for further in-depth study.

A cost-effective and eco-friendly catalyst is desirable for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) into reactive oxygen species (ROS) to abate organic pollutants in water. It is the first-ever research to synthesize a highly efficient PMS-activator by incorporating cobalt on as-synthesized Mg- and Al-loaded diatomite (DM) by impregnation (IM) and precipitation-deposition (PD) methods. The catalysts showed a mixture of the plate and pinnate-like morphologies. Atrazine (ATZ) degradation by diatomite-based catalysts followed the order of Co6Mg10/DM-IM > Co6Mg10/DM-PD > Co6Al10/DM-IM > Co6Al10/DM-PD. ATZ removal by sole PMS and adsorption was negligible. The Co6Mg10/DM-IM morphology, structure, and catalytic activity were well-maintained after reuse, with minor Co (0.05 mg L −1 ) and Mg (3.05 mg L −1 ) leaching. The ROS ( OH, SO 4 − , O 2 − and 1 O 2 ) were generated due to redox couples [Co 2+ /Co 3+ , and O 2− /O 2 ] and decomposition of PMS. Improved catalytic efficiency was ascribed to the Co/Mg and Co/Al synergism, spatially interconnected architecture with lower charge-transfer resistance, open porous structure, diffusion-friendly channels, abundant OH groups, and ROS generation. This research provides an insight into how tuning the surface chemistry of DM in terms of acidity and basicity can enhance the catalytic activity of other transition metals (such Fe, Mn, Cu, and their composites) for AOPs.

Background Nitro-m-xylene (NMX) is an important intermediate in the production of fine chemicals. Ionic liquids (ILs) are emerging solvents and catalysts. Investigating the exothermic characteristics and catalytic mechanism of IL-catalyzed synthesis of NMX is of great significance for the development of safe, efficient, and green nitration processes. Method The thermal stability and acid strength of the six imidazolium hydrogen sulfate ILs containing different cations were characterized by TGA and UV–vis. The effect of ILs on the exothermic behavior of MX nitration was characterized by reaction calorimeter. Quantum chemical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) were combined to reveal the catalytic mechanism. Significant findings ILs all exhibited high thermal stability, [MIMBs]HSO 4 showed relatively higher acid strength and catalytic activity, with MX conversion and NMX yields of 99.3% and 98.1% under catalytic conditions, respectively. The introduction of different ILs reduced the heat accumulation during nitration. The anions and sulfonic acid groups of the ILs could serve as catalytic sites with NO 2 + , promoting their reaction with MX. AIMD calculations revealed the reaction pathway and free energy barriers by which the ILs promoted protonation of HNO 3 and facilitated the NO 2 + attack on MX.

The key component that guarantees a stable cycle for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) membrane, which possesses remarkable mechanical properties. A good SEI film can reduce the migration energy of Li + and support the even deposition of Li + onto the lithium anode. In this paper, polyethylene oxide (PEO)-Lithium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl) azanide (LiTFSI) was used as the surface modification layer of the poly ( m -phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) separator. The PEO-LiTFSI functional layer was applied onto the surface of PMIA separator through hydrogen bond interaction. The introduction of the PEO-LiTFSI functional layer promotes the interaction between the PMIA separator and the electrolyte, improves the porosity of separator, subsequently boosts the liquid absorption rate and electrolyte retention rate, and minimizes the migration resistance of Li + . PMIA/LiTFSI composite separator has a lower interface impedance (174.7 Ω). More importantly, the presence of LiTFSI leads to the development of a LiF-rich SEI film on the surface of lithium anode, which promotes the movement of Li + near the lithium anode and improves the structural stability of the SEI membrance, showing a longer service life of LIBs. Through long cycle test, it was found that the LFP||Li battery that employed the PMIA/LiTFSI composite separator still had a capacity retention rate of 95.4 % along with a specific discharge capacity of 133 mAh g −1 after undergoing 100 cycles.

In this work, composite materials (Cu-Cu 2 O/MO 2 , M = Mo and W) and their thermally treated form were prepared and characterized by using a variety of spectroscopic techniques (XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS and UPS) and cyclic voltammetry. Their catalytic performance on aerobic oxidation of various alcohols under mild conditions was investigated with N-methylimidazole (NMI) and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) as the co-catalysts. Of the materials, the thermally treated MoO 2 -based material exhibited the best performance and durability. Compared to Cu-Cu 2 O, the involvement of MO 2 significantly enhances the catalytic activity on the oxidation. Our results suggest that the presence of MO 2 not only raises the energy level of VBM of Cu 2 O which is beneficial to O 2 activation and generates internal electric field pointing to the catalytic center (Cu 2 O) which would accelerate the electron transfer from the substrate to the catalyst through forming heterojunction with both Cu and MO 2 , but also disperses the catalytic center. Further, the Lewis acidity of MO 2 with appropriate strength can bring the substrate closer to the catalytic center via adsorption. But appropriate acidity is essential as easy on–off adsorption is desired in the catalysis. Thermal treatment generates oxidation state VI species of stronger acidity which offsets the effect of the raised VBM energy level.

Construction of multi-interface contact step-scheme photocatalyst is a promising pathway to achieve high-electron transfer efficiency for photodegradation Estrone and Congo red (CR). In this work, g-C 3 N 4 was selected as the main component, CeO 2 nanosheets with unique Ce 4+ →Ce 3+ conversion property and M-rGO were loaded on the surface of g-C 3 N 4 to construct magnetic photocatalyst, whose structure imparted reusability by magnetic retrieval and at the same time M-rGO acted as an efficient host for g-C 3 N 4 /CeO 2 composite photocatalyst. The photocatalytic performances were investigated with Estrone and CR, and the results showed that the composite photocatalyst g-C 3 N 4 /CeO 2 /M-rGO could degrade 71% of Estrone and 92% of CR. Free radical scavenger test showed that superoxide and hydroxyl radical species played a major role in the degradation. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the magnetic photocatalyst g-C 3 N 4 /CeO 2 /M-rGO possessed strong antibacterial properties against Proteus mirabilis. A three-factor-three-level Box-Behnken design (BBD) was selected to optimize three greatly influential parameters: light irradiation time (min), the mass of photocatalyst (mg) and pollution concentration (ppm) by responding surface methodology. It was expected that the g-C 3 N 4 /CeO 2 /M-rGO can be used as a magnetic photocatalyst to achieve its valorization, which has very broad development prospects in the field of environmental remediation or catalysis.

Multinary copper-based chalcogenide nanocrystals (NCs) as light-driven photocatalysts have attracted extensive research interest due to their great potential for generating sustainable energy without causing environmental concerns. However, systematic studies on the growth mechanism and related photocatalytic activities involving different valent metal ions (either M2+ or N3+) as foreign cations and monoclinic Cu1.94S NCs as the ‘parent lattice’ have rarely been carried out. In this work, we report an effective seed-mediated method for the synthesis of heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS NCs (M = Zn, Cd and Mn) and alloyed CuNS2 NCs (N = In and Ga). A typical cation exchange process took place prior to the growth of heterostructured NCs, while further inter-cation diffusion occurred only for the alloyed NCs. When compared with Cu1.94S NCs, all the heterostructured Cu1.94S–MS NCs and CuGaS2 NCs showed enhanced photocatalytic activities toward hydrogen production by water splitting, owing to their tailored optical band gaps and energy level alignments. Although optically favored, CuInS2 ANCs were not comparable to others due to their low conduction band minimum for the reduction of H2O to H2.

By applying the high-entropy strategy, one can develop stable mixed oxide by populating a single sublattice with many distinct cations. Two kinds of rare-earth high-entropy hexaaluminates (La 1/5 Nd 1/5 Sm 1/5 Eu 1/5 Gd 1/5 )MAl 11 O 19 (M = Mg and Zn) were successfully synthesized, and their mechanical and thermal properties were analyzed. We highlight that the Zn-containing sample displays a significant increase in fracture toughness (2.48 MPa m 1/2 ) and a decrease in thermal conductivity (1500 °C, 1.2 W m −1 K −1 ) as compared to the Mg-containing sample. The diffusion of fine grains in platelet-like grains observed only in the Zn-containing sample is considered to be responsible for its outstanding mechanical properties. This work demonstrates the excellent thermal-mechanical properties of the Zn-containing sample and indicates the promising use of high-entropy hexaaluminate in the aerospace field acting as thermal barrier coating materials.

It is highly desirable to enhance the charge separation and introduce catalytic functions for efficient water splitting into hydrogen on g-C 3 N 4 . Herein, heterojunctions of PCN-222(M)/g-C 3 N 4 -AA were successfully synthesized through the in-situ hydrothermal method, where metallic ions (M) were strategically incorporated into porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF) ligands. This heterojunction design strategy is considered to establish directional charge transfer channels for photogenerated electron-hole (e − -h + ) pairs and thereby enhance its separation efficiency. Remarkably, the 1 % PCN-222(Pd)/g-C 3 N 4 -AA composite demonstrated superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance, achieving a rate of 2338.17 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 . This rate was 3.23 times higher than that of pure g-C 3 N 4 and 2.79 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 -AA. The composite morphology was characterized by a series of physicochemical properties. Bandgap analysis via Tauc plot revealed that metal ion doping in the porphyrin center effectively modulates the HOMO-LUMO levels at the composite interface. First-principles calculations coupled with hydrogen adsorption free energy analysis elucidated how interfacial engineering between PCN-222(M) and g-C 3 N 4 -AA governs heterostructure formation and charge transfer pathways. This work systematically deciphers the synergistic effects of bimetallic MOF integration and provides insights into the underlying photocatalytic reaction mechanism.

A new mixed borate and carbonate Sr 5 (CO 3 ) 2 (BO 3 ) 2 , which is isostructural with Ba 4 M(BO 3 ) 2 (CO 3 ) 2 (M = Ba, Sr), has been synthesized by hydrothermal method . It crystallizes in Pnma (No. 61) space group with the lattice parameters a = 7.387(4), b = 16.556(9) and c = 8.971(5) Å ( Z = 4). This structure features a three-dimensional (3D) network including SrO 8 polyhedra, isolated BO 3 and CO 3 triangles. UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum for Sr 5 (CO 3 ) 2 (BO 3 ) 2 indicates that it has a deep ultra-violet cut-off edge of 190 nm. In addition, crystal structural comparison among mixed borates and carbonates shows that the interaction between boron-oxide groups and CO 3 groups leads to different arrangements of anionic groups, which can be classified into three types according to the connection of boron-oxide groups. An analysis of theoretical calculations based on density functional theory was also performed to understand the relationships between the structures and properties.

Developing cost-effective adsorbents capable of treating multipollutant wastewater under fluctuating pH conditions remains a major challenge for layered double hydroxide (LDH)-based materials. Herein, we report a La-doped MgAl-borate LDH/Nitrogen-doped carbon hybrid (LaMgAl-BLDH/NC) constructed through a C-O-M interfacial coupling, in which hydroxyl-rich N-doped carbon reacts with the metal‑oxygen layers of LaMgAl-BLDH to form robust covalent C-O-M linkages. This bonding-directed assembly produces a chemically durable and strongly integrated 3D porous network with enhanced charge heterogeneity and improved resistance to acidic or alkaline corrosion. Benefiting from this strengthened interfacial coupling and the synergistic effects of La incorporation, the LaMgAl-BLDH/NC composite exhibits high removal capacities toward structurally diverse pollutants, achieving maximum capacities of 995.20 mg/g for Congo red, 3020.19 mg/g for malachite green, and 151.34 mg/g for phosphate. Notably, compare with conventional LDHs that undergo structural degradation in acidic or alkaline environments, the C-O-M reinforced hybrid maintains excellent performance over a broad pH range of 4–10. The maximum adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for Congo red, malachite green and phosphate at pH 2, 4 and 12 correspond to 79.65%, 87.32% and 58.83% of those obtained at their respective optimal pH values. Mechanistic analysis reveals that electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, π-π stacking, pore filling jointly govern the removal process. Optimization via Box-Behnken response surface methodology further enhances removal efficiency by identifying favorable synthesis and operational conditions. This work establishes a generalizable, low-cost C-O-M bonding strategy for pH-tolerant LDH/carbon hybrids, enabling efficient remediation of multipollutant industrial wastewater.

Photocatalytic selective oxidation plays an important role in developing green chemistry. However, it is challenging to design an efficient photocatalyst for controlling the selectivity of photocatalytic oxidation reaction and exploring its detailed mechanism. Here, we synthesized three conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with D-A structures, named M−SATE−CMPs (M Zn, Cu and Co), with different d-band centers based on different metal centers, resulting in the discrepancy in adsorption and activation capacities for the reactants, which produces the selectivity of β-keto esters being catalyzed into α-hydroperoxide β-keto esters (ROOH) or to α-hydroxyl β-keto esters (ROH). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also demonstrate that the adsorption and activation capacities of the metal active centers in M−SATE−CMPs (M Zn, Cu and Co) for ROOH are the key factors to influence the photocatalytic selective oxidation of β-keto ester. This study provides a promising strategy for designing a metallaphotoredox catalyst whose photocatalytic selectivity depends on the d-band center of metal site in the catalyst.
