Advancing novel photocatalytic systems for efficient antibiotic removal is a key strategy for sustainable water purification. However, it remains technically challenging to balance high charge separation efficiency with broad-spectrum light absorption. Herein, the g-C 3 N 4 /Bi/BiPO 4 composite photocatalyst featuring a Z -scheme heterojunction mediated by Bi nanoparticles was synthesized and systematically evaluated. This unique structure integrates surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to simultaneously enhance charge separation and visible light absorption, addressing limitations of traditional g-C 3 N 4 -based systems. Photoelectrochemical characterization confirmed its superior charge separation and rapid electron transfer. Energy band analyses via UV–Vis DRS, XPS valence, and Mott-Schottky tests revealed that the Z -Scheme heterojunction, formed through an internal electric field and mediated by Bi, effectively enhanced the processes of charge separation and light absorption synchronously. Under simulated solar light irradiation, the composite exhibited a 97.5 % tetracycline degradation rate within 90 min, with a reaction rate constant of 4.00 × 10 −2 min −1 , significantly outperforming individual g-C 3 N 4 and BiPO 4 catalysts. Reactive species trapping experiments identified ·OH, ·O 2 − , 1 O 2 and h + as the dominant reactive species in tetracycline degradation. Overall, this study provides a solid theoretical foundation and experimental support for the practical application of photocatalytic technology in wastewater treatment.

A novel MIL-101(Fe)/Bi₂S₃ Z-scheme heterojunction with a metal–organic framework (MOF) structure was synthesized via a solvothermal method. Compared with pristine MIL-101(Fe) and pristine Bi₂S₃, this composite exhibits a significant breakthrough in degradation performance toward rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). Specifically, it achieves a degradation efficiency of 95.7% for 20 mg/L TCH within 120 min and 98.6% for 40 mg/L RhB within 90 min.Characterizations including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV–Vis DRS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirm that the MOF structure of MIL-101(Fe) provides a stable support matrix for Bi₂S₃. Moreover, the construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction can effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs while retaining the strongly oxidizing hydroxyl radicals (・OH) and strongly reducing superoxide radicals (・O₂⁻). More importantly, after five recycling cycles, the degradation efficiencies of the composite for TCH and RhB remain at 86.8% and 88.6%, respectively, with no obvious damage to its crystal structure after cycling. This demonstrates superior structural stability and reusability compared to most reported MOF-based photo-Fenton catalysts.

In this work, two Bi-based semiconductors composites was synthesized through the BiVO 4 quantum dots (BVO QDs) was grown on the Bi 12 TiO 20 (BTO) via an in-suit growth with the ultrasonic method, which was more stability and evenly dispersed. As expected, the BVO-BTO composites exhibited increased visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for photo-degradation due to the advantages of BVO QDs. Moreover, the possible mechanism of BVO-BTO composites was studied by trapping experiment, photocurrent, UV–vis and so on. The results demonstrated that the BVO QDs can widen the light response range to visible region and hasten the charge transfer and separation. Thus, the photocatalytic activity was enhanced through the BVO QDs decorated on BTO, which provided a new idea for designing Bi-based materials.

Bismuth oxide (Bi 2 O 3 ) is widely used in photocatalytic oxidation degradation of organic pollutants due to its simple composition, green environmental protection and stable structure. However, the limited specific surface area (SSA) and the slow charge kinetics significantly limit its photocatalytic ability. Here, Bi 2 O 3 /MWCNTs heterojunctions were synthesized using hydroxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-OH) as the substrate, explore the crystal growth mechanism and apply it to photocatalytic oxidation reactions. The one-dimensional (1D) structure and excellent electrical conductivity of MWCNTs-OH provide a special transport path for the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The stable chemical properties and unique hollow cavity structure of MWCNTs-OH significantly increase the specific surface area of Bi 2 O 3 /CNTs. The optimized Bi 2 O 3 /CNT-3 demonstrated outstanding performance in the photocatalytic oxidation degradation of organic substances such as lignin and RhB. The photocatalytic activity of lignin degradation under visible light has increased by 5.8 times, and the performance of RhB removal has increased by 6.7 times.

For thermoelectric thin film, the substrate plays an important role during the growing process and produces effects on its thermoelectric properties. Some special kinds of substrates provide an optimal combination of influences on both the structure and thermoelectric properties. In this work, Bi-Sb-Te films are deposited on Si substrates with different initial orientations by magnetron sputtering in two ways: with and without a pre-coating process. The preferred orientations of the Bi-Sb-Te films are greatly affected by the substrates, in which the thin film tends to deposit on Si substrate with (100) initial orientation and high (015)-texture, while the (00l)-textured Bi-Sb-Te film easily deposits on Si substrate with (110) initial orientation. The experimental and theoretical calculation results indicate that Bi-Sb-Te film with (00l)-texture presents good electrical conductivity and a higher power factor than that of film with (015)-texture.

The development of metal-free catalysts for efficient catalysis of both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is extremely desirable in energy technologies. Herein, nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon nanosheet/carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrids have been synthesized by the pyrolysis of glucose, urea and CNTs. Impressively, in 0.1 M KOH, the resulting hybrids afford remarkable OER activities with a low onset potential (1.50 V vs. RHE) and an exceptional over-potential (only 320 mV at 10 mA cm−2). Moreover, the same hybrids show comparable catalytic performance but better durability compared to the benchmark Pt/C (20 wt%) catalyst for ORR. The achieved ultrahigh catalytic performance of the hybrids originates from their large specific surface area (594.1 m2 g−1), high content percentage of N doping (8.5 wt%), and mesoporous structure, which leads to fully exposed active sites, improved mass/electron transport capability, easy adsorption/release of oxygen gas bubbles, and high structural stability. This work also provides a novel concept for fabricating heteroatom doped porous carbonaceous materials with integrated and improved catalytic performance for advanced applications.

In this work, CuCo@C and CuCoS@C derived from an in-situ synthesis bi-metallic MOF HKUST-1/ZIF-67 (CuCo-MOF) were successfully fabricated by calcination and hydrothermal sulfide strategies. Morphology characterization results indicated that ZIF-67 grew uniformly on the surface of HKUST-1 to form CuCo-MOF. And, benefiting from bi-metallic MOFs precursors, the formed derivatives inherited and possessed good textural properties and dispersing well metal sites, which facilitated diffusions of molecules and enhancements of catalytic performances. In addition, carbon matrix produced in the materials further accelerated electron transporting properties, boosting HER and OER activities. Accordingly, in electrolytic water evaluations, CuCo@C and CuCoS@C showed good HER and OER performance, achieving 97 mV and 180 mV of overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 in an alkaline medium, respectively. Additionally, the catalysts exhibit long-term stabilities. Thus, this study provides a rational way for designing and constructing of high-efficient catalysts for H 2 and O 2 generations from electrolytic water processes.

The integration of photovoltaics with electrochemical energy storage (EES) into monolithic photo–rechargeable systems represents a promising approach for sustainable, off–grid power sources, particularly in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). Herein, we report a high–performance photo–capacitor (PC) constructed by coupling two series–connected dye–sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with an asymmetric Bi//NiCo2S4 supercapacitor in a three–electrode configuration. Nickel cobalt sulfide (NiCo2S4) serves as a dual–function common electrode, providing both excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the I3-/I- redox reaction and high supercapacitive performance, while bismuth (Bi) is employed as a storage electrode, offering favorable energy alignment and wide operational potential. The optimized PC achieves a photovoltage exceeding 1.2 V under one–sun illumination and 0.9 V under 1000 lux LED illumination, with an areal capacitance of 170.4 mF cm-2 and an overall energy–storage efficiency of 7.05% under low–intensity solar irradiation (30 mW cm-2). The device demonstrates excellent rate capability, long–term cycling stability, and superior performance under dim–light conditions, confirming its potential as a standalone power supply for both indoor and outdoor IoT applications. This work highlights a strategic combination of band alignment, electrode design, and three–terminal architecture to realize efficient, standalone solar energy storage.

Bi 3+ doping enhances the singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) lifetime. • Oxygen vacancy-rich Bi-Co 3 O 4 catalyst. • Under irradiation, Bi-Co 3 O 4 can efficiently degrade toluene and sterilize bacteria. • Bi-Co 3 O 4 exhibits efficient antibacterial activity, providing new insights for practical indoor air purification Developing efficient materials with excellent adsorption properties and photoactivity is pivotal for photocatalytic abatement of VOCs and bacteria in the air. Herein, Bi 3+ -doped Co 3 O 4 (Bi-Co 3 O 4 ) photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal-calcination method. Incorporation of Bi 3+ ions induces lattice distortion in Co 3 O 4 , generating oxygen vacancies (OVs), which subsequently modulates the electronic structure of Co 3 O 4 and produces singlet oxygen species ( 1 O 2 ) with a lifetime of 30 min. The Bi-Co 3 O 4 , with a geometric area of 24 cm 2 , achieves complete degradation (100%) of 50 ppm toluene within 30 min and a high mineralization rate of 93.4%. It retains outstanding photocatalytic activity even after multiple usage cycles. Notably, high-reactivity oxygen species at the Bi-Co 3 O 4 interface can effectively eliminate Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). This work offers theoretical insights for the design of stable and efficient photocatalysts aimed at improving indoor air quality. Herein, a simple and environmentally benign synthetic strategy is developed to construct a hydrazine-regulated Bi/S co-doped CeVO 4 trimetallic sulfur-oxide photocatalyst (Bi/S-CeVO 4 ). The resulting material features abundant oxygen vacancy (Vo) defects and stabilized multivalent Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and V 4+ /V 5+ states, which synergistically enhance photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (PHER) performance under visible light irradiation. Band structure analyses indicate that Bi/S co-doping effectively modulates the electronic structure of CeVO 4 , leading to improved photocatalytic performance toward PHER. The coexistence of multivalent Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ and V 4+ /V 5+ species provides efficient electron-hopping pathways, facilitating photogenerated charge separation and transfer while prolonging carrier lifetime. In addition, Vo defects served as catalytic sites for water-molecule adsorption and activation, further accelerating surface reaction kinetics. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the optimized Bi/S-CeVO 4 -3, featuring the highest electrochemically active surface area of 0.0015 cm 2 and Vo concentration of 24.5%, and suitable ratio of Ce 4+ /(Ce 3+ +Ce 4+ ) (41.8%) and V 4+ /(V 4+ +V 5+ ) (38.5%), delivers the highest PHER rate of 1514.7 μmol·h –1 , with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) x-ray diffraction of 15.28% at 420 nm. Moreover, the catalyst demonstrates excellent stability and durability. This work presents a feasible and effective strategy for electronic structure and defect engineering of CeVO 4 -based photocatalysts to achieve efficient solar-driven hydrogen evolution. Graphical Inspired by battery-material redox chemistry, hydrazine-regulated Bi/S co-doping constructs a defect-rich CeVO 4 sulfur-oxide with stabilized multivalent states, enabling a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction rate of 1514.7 μmol·h –1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 15.28% at 420 nm.

Improving the efficiency/cost ratio is the key to the practical application of photocatalysts. Using cheap minerals as carriers is an effective means to improve the efficiency/cost ratio of photocatalysts. Here, kaolinite was used to co-load TiO 2 nanoparticles and Bi containing core-shell spheres forming the composites with excellent photocatalytic performance. The rate constant per unit mass of TiO 2 in the optimal sample reached 18 times that of TiO 2 . Kaolinite plays important roles in promoting photocatalytic activity by improving the dispersion of TiO 2 and the adsorption of O 2 molecules and MO anions, besides the type-II energy band alignment of TiO 2 and Bi x O y .

Nowadays, more and more regions of the earth are facing energy crisis and environmental pollution issues. Photocatalytic technology converts solar energy into chemical energy in an environmentally friendly way, which is considered as an effective method to solve such issues. In this work, a series of TiO2/Bi-MOFs (TiO2/Bismuth based metal-organic frameworks) composites were successfully prepared by a simple one-pot solvothermal method, and the photocatalytic activity of the composites was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye under visible light, and the catalytic activities of the samples were also investigated for methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline (TC). The samples were characterized by using various analytical techniques. The composites exhibited better catalytic properties compared with the original single component, which was attributed to the high dispersion of TiO2 and the synergistic effect of efficient interfacial charge transfer between TiO2 and Bi-BTC (BTC: benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate, Scheme 1). Among the results, the photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of 25-T/B (T/B, TiO2/Bi-BTC: TiO2/bismuth homobenzotrizoate composites), 35-T/D (T/D, TiO2/Bi-BDC: TiO2/bismuth terephthalate composites) and 25-T/P (T/P, TiO2/Bi-BPDC: TiO2/bismuth biphenyldicarboxylate composites) for RhB were all 99% after 40 min of visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the degradation efficiency of 25-T/B for RhB could maintain high catalytic activity after five cycles, indicating the high stability of the catalyst. Overall, the materials presented in this work are a series of reusable, high catalytic activity and economical photocatalysts for water purification, and the effects of different ligands on the photocatalytic activity of TiO2/Bi-MOFs composites were investigated.
