Developing gas sensors capable of efficiently detecting harmful gases is urgent to protect the human environment. Here, an active Ce–Ag bimetallic pair was innovatively introduced into SnS2, which successfully exhibited excellent NO2 gas sensing performance. 0.8% Ce–SnS2–Ag showed a gas sensing response of 5.18 to 1 ppm of NO2 at a low temperature of 80 °C, with a lower limit of detection as low as 100 ppb. DFT calculations revealed that Ce atoms are substituted into the main lattice of SnS2, which opens up the interlayer spacing and serves as an anchor point to fix the Ag atoms in the interlayer. The Ce–Ag bimetallic pairs successfully modulate the electronic structure of SnS2, which promotes the adsorption and charge transfer between NO2 and Ce–SnS2–Ag and thus achieves such an outstanding gas sensing performance. This work opens an avenue for the rational functional modification of SnS2 with an optimized electronic structure and enhanced gas sensing.

In this study, Os/Ag nanoparticles (Os/Ag NPs) with smaller K m and almost five times V max compared to Os NPs were prepared. This not only reduced the cost of nanozyme, but also improved the catalytic ability. Addition of L-Cysteine or glutathione (GSH) resulted in inhibitory effect on the peroxidase-like activity of Os/Ag nanozyme. Therefore, the L-Cysteine and GSH could be detected by absorption spectra method with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.22 μM and 0.2 μM, respectively. Moreover, a colorimetric sensing system for L-Cysteine and GSH based on portable paper strip and smartphone was fabricated with LOD of 1.72 μM and 1.4 μM, respectively. Furthermore, this method can be used in fetal bovine serum with recovery rates ranging from 89.42% to 109.0%. The sensing system exhibited good selectivity. This proposed colorimetric sensing assay holds great potential application in the detection of biothiols when no sophisticated equipment are available. Graphical abstract

In this study, catechin-functionalized Fe3O4-Ag nanocomposites were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The motivation for this study was to develop a novel antibacterial agent with enhanced stability and biocompatibility. The objective was to create a nanocomposite combining the antimicrobial properties of silver with the antioxidant and bioactive characteristics of catechin. We hypothesized that the synergistic effect of catechin and Fe3O4-Ag would yield a highly effective antibacterial material against common pathogens. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by TEM, SEM, AFM, XPS, XRD, FTIR and physical property measurement system (PPMS). TEM images indicated that catechin-functionalized Fe3O4-Ag nanocomposites have a spherical morphology with an average size of 25.7 nm. The SEM and AFM imaging revealed that the nanocomposites appear as a number of large particles with average diameter of 581 nm. XPS and XRD and FTIR measurement confirmed the presence of catechin components, Fe3O4 and Ag in the nanocomposites. Taken together, we conclude that the catechin-Fe3O4-Ag nanocomposites in this study have a jujube cake structure in which the Fe3O4-Ag alloy nanoparticles serve as the jujube and the condensed catechin form into the cake substrate. The antimicrobial test indicated the catechin-functionalized Fe3O4-Ag nanocomposites have obvious inhibitory effects on E.coli, S.aureus, and C.albicans.

Based on MnO2/carbon cloth (CC) composite materials, an Ag-doped MnO2nanowire, self-assembled, urchin-like structure was synthesized in situ on the surface of CC using a simple method, and a novel and efficient flexible electrode material for supercapacitors was developed. The morphology, structure, elemental distribution, and pore distribution of the material were analyzed using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and BET. The electrochemical performance was tested using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge/discharge (GCD). In the three-electrode system, GCD testing showed that the specific capacitance of the material reached 520.8 F/g at 0.5 A/g. After 2000 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g, the capacitance retention rate was 90.6%, demonstrating its enormous potential in the application of supercapacitor electrode materials.

Melamine-impregnated paper, a decorative material in furniture and interior design, could potentially impede the spread of indoor bacteria if it possesses antibacterial properties. Here, nano Ag-doped ZIF-8 (Ag@ZIF-8) was synthesized using ion exchange and in-situ chemical reduction strategies, followed by incorporating it into melamine-impregnated paper. The ion exchange mechanism of Zn 2+ and Ag + during ion exchange reactions was investigated. The structure of Ag@ZIF-8 was well-defined, with Ag nanoparticles evenly distributed on the surface of ZIF-8. Ag@ZIF-8 showed good thermal stability at 400 °C, meeting the requirements for the hot-pressing process of the melamine-impregnated paper. Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited enhanced ROS generation under visible light compare to ZIF-8, which was attributed to its reinforced light absorption and charge carrier separation facilitated by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. The antibacterial activity of Ag@ZIF-8 was better than ZIF-8, owing to the multiple-synergistic antibacterial mechanisms of the ion release and ROS generation. Specifically, the 10-Ag@ZIF-8 exhibited MIC of 128 μg/mL and 64 μg/mL against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. The signal intensity of •O 2 − induced by 10-Ag@ZIF-8 was 4.38 times higher than that of ZIF-8. As the addition of Ag@ZIF-8 increased, the antibacterial performance of melamine-impregnated paper improved. Considering the antibacterial property and economy of melamine-impregnated paper, 0.20 wt% was the optimal amount for 10-Ag@ZIF-8 decorated blockboard. This study proposes a novel approach for synthesizing MOF-based melamine-impregnated paper with antibacterial properties, aiming to reduce bacterial spread, minimize disease risks, and contribute to lowering overall healthcare costs.

This study reports on the synthesis and electromagnetic wave-absorbing properties of Ag/Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 under various magnetic field intensities. The nanocomposites were prepared via a solvothermal method followed by a Stober proces, during which uniform magnetic fields were applied to induce the formation of one-dimensional nanochain structures. Results indicate that the Ag/Fe 3 O 4 /SiO 2 exhibit enhanced wave-absorbing capabilities under strong magnetic fields. Specifically, at a magnetic field of 600 mT, the composite achieves a minimum reflection loss value of −48.61 dB, accompanied by a broad effective absorption bandwidth. Furthermore, the microwave absorption performance of samples oriented horizontally along the circumference surface during preparation shows a significant improvement compared to non-oriented samples. It is attributed to the optimized electromagnetic wave transmission pathways and improved electrical conductivity and magnetic loss capabilities facilitated by the nanochain structures. Specifically, the nanochains effectively lengthen the wave propagation distance, promote charge migration, and intensify natural and exchange resonance effects. This research not only broadens the design paradigm for electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials but also offers novel strategies for their development.

In this paper, DNA containing six cytosines as the formation site for silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) was adopted as a template for preparing fluorescent DNA-Ag NCs. For the first time, it was found that the fluorescence of DNA-Ag NCs could be quenched after hybridization with their complementary sequence. On the basis of this new phenomenon, we designed a sequence C1 that was completely complementary to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) DNA, and probe DNA which was partially complementary to C1 for the synthesis of DNA-Ag NCs. The fluorescence of DNA-Ag NCs was quenched after hybridization with C1 and the DNA-Ag NCs/C1 composite was formed, while C1 could be dissociated away from the DNA-Ag NCs by HIV DNA through a strand exchange reaction due to the stronger affinity between HIV DNA and C1, which could switch on the quenched Ag NCs, thus a new “off–on” fluorescence method for HIV DNA detection was developed. In the experiment, the Ag NCs formation site of DNA, the number of base pairs, and the pH and salt concentration of binding buffer were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the limit of detection for HIV DNA was obtained to be 3.18 nM (3σ/N, n = 7) with the linear range of 15–150 nM for the 150 nM DNA-Ag NCs/C1 probe. Besides, the probe showed excellent specificity to HIV DNA, and even distinguished one nucleotide mismatched HIV DNA.

This paper reported a one-step synthesis of Ag 2 S/Ag@MoS 2 nanocomposites and its applications in the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. The nanocomposites were well characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammograms (CV), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Fourier transforms infrared spectra (FTIR). The AgNPs were uniformly dispersed on the MoS 2 nanosheets and the particle size of the AgNPs was about 10–30 nm. These Ag 2 S/Ag@MoS 2 nanocomposites offered sensitive SERS signals for the detection of R6G with the limit of detections as low as 10 −10 M. The photocatalytic activity of the composite catalyst was studied by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under light illumination. The apparent rate constant of MB degradation for the obtained catalyst could reach 6.6 × 10 −2 min −1 , indicating that the novel Ag 2 S/Ag@MoS 2 nanocomposites can be explored for organic pollutant’s detection and degradation.

A novel nanofiltration (NF) membrane is developed for efficiently separating monosaccharide from disaccharide. A hydrophilic catechol (CT)-Ag interlayer is proposed and co-deposited on a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) substrate, and then interfacial polymerization (IP) of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and trimethyl chloride (TMC) is carried out. The silver nanoparticles obtained through the reduction reaction are used to precisely regulate the unique selective structure with quinone aggregates and polyamides. The composite NF membrane achieved a pure water flux of 31.2 L m −2 h −1 at 0.5 MPa with 81.2 % sucrose rejection and 17.5 % glucose rejection. Performance evaluation in dyes, proteins, and bacteria systems also showcased the great performance of the membrane. Following the filtration of methyl orange and BSA, the flux recovery rates of the PAN/CT-Ag interlayer/PEI + TMC membrane reached 98.7 % and 98.1 %, respectively. The designed structure of silver nanoparticles in membrane enhances the anti-fouling properties through interactions with bacterial proteins. The developed membrane shows promising potential for glucose purification.

Selective photoreduction of CO 2 into ethylene is desirable but stays challenging due to easy desorption of primary reduction product CO. Herein, violet phosphorene nanosheets (VPNS) are for the first time demonstrated to be effective CO 2 photoreduction catalysts to yield ethylene. Photoelectron was found to transfer from VPNS to co-catalyst Ag and aggregated on VPNS-Ag interface to enhance CO 2 and CO* adsorption, and further lower the reduction energy barrier to yield ethylene, which was confirmed by in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform, CO stripping voltammetry, CO reduction experiments, and density functional theory calculations. CO 2 is reduced into COOH* and automatically transformed into CO* on VPNS-Ag surface, then protonized into CHO* with a low barrier of 0.64 eV and automatically coupled into COCHO* to yield ethylene. Only ethylene was detected from CO 2 photoreduction with a yield of 10.34 μmol g −1 h −1 without any hole-sacrificial agent, much higher than most reported photocatalysts.

Nitroaromatic compounds are common toxic matters discharged as wastewater in varied industries. Reducing them into corresponding aromatic amines can not only decrease their contamination but also obtain value-added products, in which the preparation of catalysts with superior properties is the key. Herein, the spherical Cu-Ag architectures (ATs) are constructed via a two-step wet chemical method. First, the Cu microspheres are fabricated with the assistance of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the mixed solution of ethylene glycol (EG) and water. Then, using them as templates, the spherical Cu-Ag ATs can be grown and constructed. The as-obtained Cu-Ag ATs have the spherical outlines assembled by many nanoparticles. The sliced Cu-Ag ATs show hollow structures and many nanothorns grow from the center to the around, combining the roughly spherical shell to build up the Cu-Ag ATs. In the reduction reaction of p -nitrophenol and p -nitroaniline, the spherical Cu-Ag ATs all exhibit excellent catalytic activities. Within 85 s and 80 s, the p -nitrophenol and p -nitroaniline can be converted completely. The prepared Cu-Ag ATs are expected to have potentials in other fields, such as electronics, sensors and so on. Graphical abstract The hierarchical Cu-Ag architectures are constructed successfully through a two-step wet chemical method, in which the rough Cu microspheres are first fabricated in aqueous EG solution, and are used as templates to direct the growth of Cu-Ag architectures. In both reduction of p -nitrophenol and p -nitroaniline, the Cu-Ag architectures exhibit high catalytic activities.

Bacterial keratitis is a major cause of blindness, hindered by the rising threat of antibiotic resistance. Although corneal bandage lenses (CBLs) are widely utilized in ophthalmic treatment, their effectiveness in treating bacterial keratitis remains limited due to risks of secondary infections, patient discomfort, and complications. In this study, we developed a novel biomimetic coating on CBLs by grafting Ag/Cu bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag/Cu-NPs) and thiol-functionalized heparin (Hep-SH) using a rapid polydopamine (PDA) deposition technique, effectively mimicking the ocular surface glycocalyx structure. The resulting Ag/Cu-NPs/Hep-SH coated CBLs (PNH-CBLs) exhibited significant antibacterial activity, with over 80 % reduction in Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and 70 % in Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) due to the sustained release of Ag + and Cu 2+ , along with displaying favorable in vitro biocompatibility. Animal experiments conducted on New Zealand white rabbits with bacterial keratitis demonstrated successful treatment therapeutic outcomes, with PNH-CBLs leading to a significant decrease in clinical score. These biomimetic lenses also exhibited selective anti-protein adsorption properties, minimizing inflammation and promoting surface lubrication. Overall, this innovative approach addresses critical challenges in antibiotic resistance and offers a promising therapeutic strategy for managing ophthalmic infectious diseases.
