Demands related to clean energy and environmental protection promote the development of novel supramolecular assemblies for photocatalysis. Because of the distinctive aggregation behaviors, bolaamphiphiles with two hydrophilic end groups could be theoretically the right candidates for the fabrication of high-performance photocatalysis. However, photocatalytic applications based on bolaamphiphilic assemblies were still rarely investigated. Especially, the relationship between diverse assembled nanostructures and the properties for different applications is urgently needed to be studied. Herein, we demonstrate that using the hierarchical assembly of bolaamphiphiles could correctly induce the porphyrin supramolecular architectures with much better photocatalytic performances than the aggregations containing 450 times of the porphyrin molecules, even though both molecular structures as well as the J-aggregations of porphyrin building blocks are same in two different systems. Thus, the co-assembly of l-phenylalanine terminated bolaamphiphile (Bola-F) and the porphyrin containing four hydroxyl groups (tetrakis-5,10,15,20-(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin) can form microtube in methanol and forms fibers/spheres in methanol/water mixture. For catalyzing the photodegradation of rhodamine B, the small amount of J-aggregated porphyrin within Bola-F microtubes show much better photocatalytic performance comparing with that of huge porphyrin J-aggregations in fibers/spheres. The supramolecular assemblies as well as the photocatalysis were thoroughly characterized by different spectroscopies and electron microscopy. It is demonstrated that the co-assembly with bolaamphiphiles could inhibit the energy transfer of porphyrin aggregation and subsequently benefit the electron transfer and corresponding photocatalysis under photo-irradiation. This work is not only useful for further understanding the hierarchically supramolecular assembly but also provides a new strategy for making novel functional supramolecular architectures based on the assembly of bolaamphiphiles and porphyrins.

Developing a low-cost and well-recyclable adsorbent with high adsorption capacity is greatly desirable in dye wastewater treatment. Here, we demonstrate a kind of novel tough and reusable hydrogel beads with quite high capacity of dye adsorption via incorporating mussel-bioinspired poly(L-DOPA) (PDOPA) into alginate/poly(acrylamide) double network (DN) hydrogels. The synthesized PDOPA nanoaggregates were introduced into the DN hydrogels by simple one-pot mixing with the monomers prior to polymerization. The fabricated hydrogel beads exhibited high mechanical strength and good elastic recovery due to the interpenetrating Ca 2+ -alginate and poly(acrylamide) networks. It was shown that the beads exhibited relatively high dye adsorption capacity compared to other adsorbents reported in literature, and the introduction of PDOPA with an appropriate amount raised the adsorption capacity. It is believed that the addition of PDOPA and the matrix of double network architecture contributed synergistically to the high adsorption capacity of hydrogel beads. Moreover, the desorption of dyes could be easily realized via rinsing in acidic water and ethanol solution. The hydrogel beads remained the high adsorption capacity even after 5 times of adsorption and desorption cycles. This tough and stable hydrogel with high adsorption capacity may have potential in treatment of dye wastewater released by textile dyeing industry.

Summary A novel α-L-rhamnosidase was isolated and purified from Aspergillus oryzae NL-1. The enzyme was purified 13.2-fold by ultrafiltration, ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography with an overall recovery of 6.4% and specific activity of 224.4 U/mg, and the molecular mass of its subunit was approximately 75 kDa. Its optimal temperature and pH were 65 °C and 4.5, respectively. The enzyme was stable in the pH range 3.5–7.0, and it showed good thermostability at higher temperatures. The K M , kcat and kcat/K M values were 5.2 m m , 1624 s −1 and 312 s −1 m m −1 using p NPR as substrates, respectively. Moreover, the enzyme exhibited transglycosylating activity, which could synthesise rhamnosyl mannitol through the reactions of transglycosylation with inexpensive rhamnose as the glycosyl donor. Our findings indicate that the enzyme has potential value for glycoside synthesis in the food industry.

To create fluorescent sensors for Cr (VI) and l-arginine detection, blue-emitting carbon dots (CDs, named as M-CDs) were prepared via a solvothermal synthesis by using m-phenylenediamine. The introduction of sulfuric acid changed the blue-emitting of CDs into green-emitting (named as S-CDs), in which the photoluminescence (PL) peak wavelengths of samples M-CDs and S-CDs were 450 and 540 nm, while their PL efficiencies were 21.7 and 84.2 % respectively. Sulfuric acid resulted in the average fluorescent lifetime of the CDs was prolonged into 8.19 from 4.65 ns. The photo and thermal stable tests demonstrated that theses CDs revealed excellent stability. Meanwhile, CDs flexible films with bright blue- and green-emitting were prepared utilizing the favorable solubility of CDs in polar solvents. Mono-dispersed CDs as luminescent materials demonstrated it promising prospects in luminescent devices field. Furthermore, M-CDs exhibited excellent selectivity towards Cr(VI) and l-arginine. The detected limit (0.86 μM for Cr(VI) and 0.43 μM for l-arginine) was determined by assessing the response of M-CDs to various concentrations of Cr(VI) ion and l-arginine solutions. These bright CDs revealed great potential for accurate detection of Cr(VI) and l-arginine.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are rich in accessible and active Lewis acid-base sites and hierarchical pores, making them effective catalysts for the cycloaddition of CO 2 to epoxides under mild conditions. In this study, a facile defect-engineering strategy using acid etching and ligand exchange was developed to convert three-dimensional ZIF-L into layered Br-ZIF-L with a tire-like surface, abundant active sites, and a structure optimized for efficient mass diffusion. This modification enabled the rapid cycloaddition of CO 2 to propylene oxide under mild conditions (1 MPa and 100 °C for 2 h). The resulting cyclic carbonate was obtained in 92 % yield and 100 % selectivity. Additionally, Br-ZIF-L exhibited excellent chemical stability without a loss of catalytic activity after six consecutive cycles, highlighting its potential as a high-performance catalyst for CO 2 conversion. The developed catalytic system exhibited a conversion rate of >90 % for five different substituted epoxides. This study introduces an efficient approach for synthesizing cyclic carbonates via CO 2 fixation under mild conditions.

Background The industrial production of L-threonine faces challenges because of high production costs, especially those of substrates, meaning new production methods are needed. Methods Fur, a new global transcription factor related to L-threonine biosynthesis, was discovered in this study. Multidimensional regulation combined with global transcriptional machinery engineering was used to modify an Escherichia coli strain. Results: The most efficient mutant showed high titer (154.2 g/L), productivity (2.14 g/L/h), and yield (0.76 g/g) of L-threonine production. These three parameters indicated that these engineering strategies were economically feasible for developing high L-threonine-producing strains. We integrated the sucrose utilization gene cluster into the genome to further reduce the production cost of L-threonine. Using untreated cane molasses as the substrate, L-threonine was successfully produced with a titer of 92.46 g/L and a cost reduction of 48 %. Conclusion This research offers advantages for industrial scalability, and the resulting engineered bacterium holds significant industrial application potential.

A novel hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE)-supported L-proline has been developed via a bottom-up copolymerization strategy. Copolymerization of ethylene and a protected proline acrylate comonomer with cationic Pd-diimine catalysts was conducted, followed by de-protection of the proline groups. Well-defined HBPE copolymers having molecular weights (MWs) of 10.3–50.3 kDa and 3.2–15.6 L-proline molecules per HBPE polymer chain were synthesized. The effects of the L-proline amount and HBPE MW on the catalyst performance were studied. The HBPE catalysts were efficient in asymmetric aldol reactions of p-nitrobenzaldehyde (p-NBA) or benzaldehyde derivatives with cyclohexanone. High p-NBA conversions of up to 98% and excellent product selectivities with anti/syn = 98/2 and ee > 99% were achieved. Moreover, the HBPE catalysts could be easily recovered by adding water into the product. The recovered catalysts could be reused multiple times with only a slight decline in reactivity and selectivity.

L- threo -3-hydroxyaspartic acid (L-THA) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid that has garnered significant attention due to its diverse biological activities. However, the synthesis of L-THA through enzymatic and whole-cell catalysis requires the expensive substrate L-aspartic acid or L-asparagine, and co-substrate α-ketoglutarate, which limits their large-scale application. Here, this is the first report of engineering E. coli as a cell factory for de novo production of L-THA from glucose by fermentation. Firstly, the asnO gene encoding asparagine hydroxylases from Streptomyces coelicolor was heterologously expressed in E. coli to yield the L-THA producing strain. The formation and configuration of L-THA were characterized by LC–MS and HPLC after FDAA derivatization. Secondly, the pathway genes aspC and asnB , which encode aspartate aminotransferase and asparagine synthase, respectively, were overexpressed to enhance L-THA titer from 49.9 to 90.84 mg/L. Thirdly, the efforts were made to improve the key precursor L-aspartic acid pool by overexpressing the aspartase encoding gene aspA and knocking out aspartate kinase (AK) III encoding gene lysC . The best strain CC03 was obtained and L-THA titer reached 278.3 mg/L in a shake flask, representing an approximately 5.6-fold increase compared to the original strain. Ultimately, 2.87 g/L L-THA was obtained after 32 h fed-batch fermentation. This research underscores the potential use of E. coli fermentation as a feasible platform for de novo biosynthesis of L-THA from glucose, which is amenable to industrial application.

A highly efficient resonance light scattering (RLS) and visual probe based on mercaptosuccinic acid (MA) modified copper sulfide (CuS) nanosheets has been successfully established for sensitive and selective detection of l -cysteine ( l -Cys). The CuS nanosheets are facilely synthesized via a reductive solution route with MA as reductant and modifier at room temperature. The as-prepared CuS nanosheets have been characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. Experimental results indicated that formation of hydrogen bonds and thiol-Cu chemical bonds between CuS nanosheets and l -Cys significantly contributed to the sensitivity and selectivity of the proposed method no matter for RLS or visual detection of l -Cys. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear range of the l -Cys RLS probe was 2.78 (10σ/K)-7000 nmol/L ( r = 0.9944), and the detection limit was 0.83 nmol/L (3σ/K). As to visual detection, the detection limit could also be extended to 75 μmol/L.

Melt-blending poly( l -lactide) (PLLA) with elastomers has been well demonstrated to improve toughness of PLLA. Here, we show a poly( d -lactide) (PDLA) grafted thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) (TPU-g-PDLA) toughed PLLA with simultaneous formation of few amount stereocomplex crystallites (SCs) which exhibited higher efficient toughening than that of PLLA with TPU. The TPU-g-PDLA was prepared by the in-situ melt-reaction of TPU and PDLA with 4, 4’-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). A comparative study on morphology, rheological and crystallization behavior was also carried in PLLA/TPU, PLLA/TPU-g-PDLA and PLLA/TPU/PDLA samples. The PLLA/TPU-g-PDLA samples show the highest crystallization rate, complex viscosity, impact strength and tensile strength among PLLA/TPU, PLLA/TPU-g-PDLA and PLLA/TPU/PDLA samples, indicating that the higher interfacial interaction between TPU-g-PDLA and PLLA. Furthermore, TPU chains in TPU-g-PDLA were thought to break the intermolecular interaction of PLLA and rapid its crystallization and increase crystallinity .

Natural polycations, such as poly(L-lysine) (PLL) and chitosan (CS), have inherent superiority as non-viral vectors due to their unparalleled biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, the application was constrained by poor transfection efficiency and safety concerns. Since previous modification strategies greatly weakened the inherent advantages of natural polycations, developing a strategy for functional group introduction with broad applicability to enhance the transfection efficiency of natural polycations without compromising their cationic properties is imperative. Herein, two uncharged functional diblock oligomers P(DMAEL-b-NIPAM) and P(DMAEL-b-Vlm) were prepared from a lactose derivative, N-iso-propyl acrylamide (NIPAM) as well as 1-vinylimidazole (Vlm) and further functionalized with four small ligands folate, glutathione, cysteine and arginine, respectively, aiming to enhance the interactions of complexes with cells, which were quantified utilizing a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) biosensor, circumventing the tedious material screening process of cell transfection. Upon incorporation with PLL and DNA, the multifunctional oligomers endow the formulated ternary complexes with great properties suitable for transfection, such as anti-aggregation in serum, destabilized endosome membrane, numerous functional sites for promoted endocytosis and therefore robust transfection activity. Furthermore, different from the conventional strategy of decreasing cytotoxicity by reducing the charge density, the multifunctional oligomer incorporation strategy maintains the highly positive charge density, which is essential for efficient cellular uptake. This system develops a new platform to modify natural polycations towards clinical gene therapy.
