Nanozyme based on CoFe2O4 modified with MoS2 for colorimetric determination of cysteine and glutathione

Xian Zhiquan,Zhang Li,Yu Ying,Lin Bixia,Wang Yumin,Guo Manli,Cao Yujuan

A nanozyme based on CoFe 2 O 4 modified with MoS 2 was constructed for colorimetric determination of cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH). Firstly, ferrite CoFe 2 O 4 is synthesized, and it is then modified by MoS 2 to form a flower-like polymer (MoS 2 @CoFe 2 O 4 ). In the presence of H 2 O 2 , a redox interaction takes place, and the resulting hydroxyl promoted a colorimetric conversion from colorless to blue in the presence of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). However, once Cys or GSH is added, they are capable to compete with the interaction of the hydroxyl with TMB, resulting in an inhibition of the colorimetric conversion. The colorimetric distinction is sensitive to the amount of target. The results obtained proved that the catalytic efficiency of MoS 2 @CoFe 2 O 4 is 4.4-fold and 1.8-fold to that of MoS 2 and CoFe 2 O 4 . Meanwhile, the K m values to TMB and H 2 O 2 are 0.067 and 0.048 mM, respectively, which are 6.5-fold and 77-fold, respectively smaller than those of natural peroxidase such as HPR. This indicates that the MoS 2 @CoFe 2 O 4 possesses a favorable interaction affinity. Additionally, the colorimetric distinction caused by the competition between TMB and cysteine or glutathione is obvious. The signal responses to cysteine and glutathione are linear in the range 0.5~15 μM and 0.5~35 μM, and the LODs are 0.10 and 0.21 μM, respectively. In practical assay of Cys in serum, the RSD of the sample tests is 4.6%, and the recoveries for the spiked assays are 95.3% and 96.0% with the RSD of 2.1% and 4.2%, respectively. Graphical abstract

Elucidating the layer-number impact of MoS2 on the adsorption and hydrogenation of CO

Jia-Xin He,Yong-Shan Xiao,Chang Liu,Min-Li Zhu,Yong-Hong Song,Zhong-Wen Liu

MoS 2 is an attractive sulfur-resistant catalyst for directly converting sulfur-containing syngas to high value-added chemicals. However, the effect of the layered structure on the catalytic activity for CO hydrogenation reactions is far from clear. Herein, MoS 2 /carbon composite catalysts with 1–8 stacking layers in MoS 2 crystallites are synthesized, and the impact of the layer numbers on the catalytic performance is probed for the low-temperature methanation of sulfur-containing syngas. The results indicate that the turnover frequency of CO methanation increases from 2.4 × 10 -3 to 3.7 × 10 -3 s −1 with decreasing layer numbers of MoS 2 crystallites from 8.3 to 1.1. This result is thoroughly explained by the fact that the higher ratio of rim sites in MoS 2 crystallites with fewer layer numbers enhances the catalytic activity, which originates from the facilitated activation of CO and H 2 . These understandings are important for the rational design and development of more efficient MoS 2 -based catalysts for CO hydrogenation.

MXene-Bonded hollow MoS2/Carbon sphere strategy for high-performance flexible sodium ion storage

Zeyu Yuan,Junming Cao,Shulga Valerii,Hao Xu,Lili Wang,Wei Han

Sodium-ion batteries, as a promising alternative to the lithium-ion battery, have attracted extensive attention. However, due to the larger ion radius and higher standard reduction potential, the sodium-ion batteries still face poor cycle stability and relatively low energy density problems. In this work, a carbon sphere-supported Nb 2 CT x MXene/MoS 2 hierarchical structure has been designed and synthesized through hydrothermal and electrostatic self-assembly methods. The design strategy successfully improves the utilization efficiency of the MoS 2 carbon sphere as a support skeleton and reducing the diffusion path length of Na ions, leading to an improved specific capacity and rate performance. Moreover, Nb 2 CT x sheets also effectively inhibit the capacity attenuation caused by MoS 2 shedding, thus achieving the long cycle life of the sodium-ion battery. As a result, the carbon-supported MXene/MoS 2 anode delivers an ultrahigh reversible capacity, long cycling stability, and superior capacity retention rate. Notably, the carbon-supported MXene/MoS 2 anode can also obtain a considerable capacity of 196 mAh g −1 at a current density of 20 A g −1 . The full cell of SIBs was assembled, and the flexibility of the battery was tested. The density functional theory simulation results show that the sodium ion has a smaller diffusion barrier under this material design strategy.

Multilayered surface modification of anion exchange membrane by MoS2 flakes for improved antifouling performance

Lan Hao,Zexu Chi,Jianyou Wang

Surface modification of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is a classic method to improve antifouling performance. However, the transport resistance of ions is elevated due to the addition of modified layer. Herein, a series of antifouling AEMs were designed via multilayered surface modification of commercial AEMs. Owing to the inherent hydrophilicity and electronegativity, MoS 2 flakes are picked as functional materials and electrodeposited on the surface of commercial AEMs to improve the antifouling performance. Meanwhile, rigid, irregular, and small-sized MoS 2 flakes tend to the formation of loose structure, thus decreasing the loss of ion transport ability. Polydopamine (PDA) is coated on the surface of MoS 2 modified AEMs to enhance the long-term stability of AEMs. Compared to commercial AEMs, the obtained AEMs display superior antifouling performance without obviously affecting desalination performance. Particularly, PDA@MoS 2 modified AEM only offers a 9% reduction in desalination rate, while the desalination rate is 1.88 times of that of commercial AEMs after antifouling experiments. This study may provide a source of inspiration for fabricating high-performance membranes with improved antifouling performance among various separation applications.

Probing Charge Injection-Induced Structural Transition in Ionic Liquids Confined at the MoS2 Surface

Wei Chen,Yumiao Lu,Yanlei Wang,Feng Huo,Wei-Lu Ding,Li Wei,Hongyan He

The ability to tune structures and properties of interfacial ionic liquids (ILs) using electric fields lies at the heart of modern energy storage technologies, particularly for supercapacitors with ILs as electrolytes. Direct observation of the underlying structural change caused by charge injection is vitally important, but the data are extremely scarce. Here, we propose a general protocol to explore the dynamic structural response of interfacial ILs subjected to charge injection. The experimental results have revealed asymmetric structural evolution of interfacial ILs with a common feature of enhanced mobility during charge injection. Consequently, the surface ILs diffuse and agglomerate into various patterns, which depend critically on both the charge injection mode and initial structural feature. Slow and mild charge injection is advantageous in maintaining structural stability as well as regulating dielectric constants of interfacial ILs. Finally, we unveil the underlying energy conversion from electric energy to thermal energy that governs the structural evolution trend. Our current findings manifest a universal strategy for structural regulation of interfacial ILs via electric fields and open up opportunities for greatly accelerating charging efficiency of supercapacitors for energy storage and harvesting.

Single-Layer MoS2 Grown on Atomically Flat SrTiO3 Single Crystal for Enhanced Trionic Luminescence

Chenxi Huang,Jun Fu,Miaomiao Xiang,Jiefu Zhang,Hualing Zeng,Xiang Shao

The elaborate interface interactions can be critical in determining the achievable functionality of a semiconductor heterojunction (SH), particularly when two-dimensional material is enclosed in the system and its thickness is at an atomic extreme. In this work, we have successfully constructed a SH model system composed of typical transition-metal chalcogenide (TMDs) and transition metal oxides (TMO) by directly growing molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) nanosheets on atomically flat strontium titanate (SrTiO3) single crystal substrates through a conventional chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthetic method. Multiple measurements have demonstrated the uniform monolayer thickness and single crystallinity of the MoS2 nanosheets as well as the atomic flatness of the heterojunction surface, both characterizing an extremely high quality of the interface. Clear evidence have been obtained for the electron transfer from the MoS2 adlayer to the SrTiO3 substrate which varies against the interface conditions. More importantly, the photoluminescence of MoS2 is significantly tailored, which is correlated with both the cleanness of the interface and the crystal orientation of the SrTiO3 substrate. These results not only shed fresh lights on the structure–property relationship of the TMDs/TMO heterostructures but also manifest the importance of the ideal interface structure for a hybridized system.

Engineering Eu3+-incorporated MoS2 nanoflowers toward efficient photothermal/photodynamic combination therapy of breast cancer

Shengyu Zhou,Xiaodan Jiao,Ying Jiang,Yanan Zhao,Peng Xue,Yingshuai Liu,Jing Liu

Two-dimensional MoS 2 (2D-MoS 2 ) and its nanocomposites have been extensively studied in cancer therapy research since their prominent surface area and NIR absorption ability. In this work, Eu 3+ -incorporated MoS 2 (MoS 2 :Eu 3+ ) nanoflowers with enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) were successfully developed by a one-step bottom-up hydrothermal method. Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, the photothermal agents MoS 2 :5%Eu 3+ nanoflowers have a PCE at ~ 49.05%, which is 1.75 times higher than the pristine MoS 2 . MoS 2 :5%Eu 3+ as efficient photosensitizers also promote generation of cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) under 808 nm laser irradiation, thus achieving photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancers at the same time. Enhanced in vitro breast cancer therapy through the combination of photothermal therapy (PTT) and PDT is clearly proved by using the MoS 2 :Eu 3+ nanosheet as a multifunctional nanoprobe. The unique MoS 2 :Eu 3+ works as a promising nanoprobe for PDT/PTT cancer therapies, and also provides a novel strategy for PCE improvement of the 2D-MoS 2 .

Fabrication of a hybrid ultrafiltration membrane based on MoS2 modified with dopamine and polyethyleneimine

Xin Wen,Can He,Yuyan Hai,Xiaofan Liu,Rui Ma,Jianyu Sun,Xue Yang,Yunlong Qi,Jingyun Chen,Hui Wei

The hydrophobicity of ultrafiltration membranes is the main cause of membrane fouling and reduced permeability, so it is necessary to improve the hydrophilicity and anti-fouling performance of ultrafiltration membrane materials. MoS2 nanoparticles that were modified with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), named MoS2-PDA-PEI, were added to fabricate a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane (PES/MoS2-PDA-PEI) for the first time. The effects of modified MoS2 nanoparticles on membrane performance were clarified. The results indicated that the permeability, rejection, and anti-fouling capability of the hybrid PES/MoS2-PDA-PEI membrane have been improved compared with the pristine PES membrane. When the content of MoS2-PDA-PEI nanoparticles in the membrane is 0.5%, the pure water flux of the hybrid membrane reaches 364.03 L m−2 h−1, and the rejection rate of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and humic acid (HA) is 96.5% and 93.2% respectively. The flux recovery rate of HA reached 97.06%. As expected, the addition of MoS2-PDA-PEI nanoparticles promotes the formation of the porous structure and improves the hydrophilicity of the membrane, thereby improving its antifouling performance.

Construction of hierarchical 2D/2D Ti3C2/MoS2 nanocomposites for high-efficiency solar steam generation

Ruiqi Xu,Na Wei,Zhenkui Li,Xiaojie Song,Qi Li,Kunyu Sun,Enquan Yang,Like Gong,Yiling Sui,Jian Tian,Xin Wang,Minggang Zhao,Hongzhi Cui

Solar steam generation has been considered one of the most promising approaches for dealing with the energy and freshwater resource crises in recent years. However, achieving high efficiency in photo-thermal conversion remains a considerable challenge. Here, a series of hierarchical Ti 3 C 2 /MoS 2 nanocomposites were designed for steam generation by a hydrothermal method. When the mass fraction of MoS 2 reached 65 wt% (TM-3), the Ti 3 C 2 /MoS 2 nanocomposite presented a strong broad-band light absorption of 92.4% from the UV to NIR region because of the accordion-like layered structure. The evaporation rate and solar-thermal conversion efficiency of the TM-3 with as-fabricated evaporator could reach 1.36 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 87.2% under 1 kW/m 2 , due to the excellent light absorption ability of TM-3 and the low thermal energy loss (8.8%) of the evaporator. Meanwhile, TM-3 permits the evaporator to have remarkable cycle stability because of its hydrophobic properties. Moreover, TM-3 showed excellent seawater desalination and wastewater treatment abilities. Thus, the excellent light absorption ability, photo-thermal conversion efficiency, and stability of the overall system suggested that these nanocomposites show great potential applications in synergetic solar desalination and sewage treatment.

3D S@MoS2@reduced graphene oxide aerogels cathode for high-rate lithium-sulfur batteries

Yuzhen Hou,Yanbiao Ren,Shichao Zhang,Kunpeng Wang,Fangshuo Yu,Tao Zhu

Practical application of the lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries is still hindered by their capacity decays caused by the shuttling of polysulfides . In this work, 3D MoS 2 nanoporous spheres (MoS 2 -NPSs), exposing abundant active edges by decorating on conductive reduced graphene oxide aerogels (rGOA/GA), were fabricated as an S host to construct the S@MoS 2 @GA cathodes. An S@MoS 2 @GA-0.425 cathode constructed as such delivered an initial capacity of 688 mAh g −1 and arrived at a high discharge capacity of 565 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles at 0.2C; moreover, a reversible capacity of 324 mAh g −1 retained for the electrode after 500 cycles at 1.0C with a slow capacity fading rate of 0.054% per cycle. The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the strong interactions of 3D MoS 2 @GA with lithium polysulfides intermediates (Li 2 S n where 4 ≤ n ≤ 8), and the fast lithium ion and electron transport channels formed in the cathode for the sulfur redox reaction . More importantly, the MoS 2 -NPSs electrocatalyst could chemically adsorb the Li 2 S n to fix soluble ones near the conductive GA surface and also could kinetically accelerate the transformation of Li 2 S n .

Nanosheet-assembled 3D flower-like MoS2/NiCo(OH)2CO3 composite for enhanced supercapacitor performance

A.Y. Chen,H.H. Liu,P. Qi,X.F. Xie,M.T. Wang,X.Y. Wang

3D flower-like MoS 2 /NiCo(OH) 2 CO 3 (MoS 2 /NiCoHC) composites are synthesized by a hydrothermal method using MoS 2 nanospheres as precursors. The microstructure of the composite is characterized by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy , scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The MoS 2 nanospheres are served as nucleating agent to trigger the formation of NiCoHC nanosheets , which self-assemble into 3D flower-like MoS 2 /NiCoHC particles. The MoS 2 /NiCoHC composites exhibit a high supercapacitive performance with a specific capacity of 583 C g −1 (1296 F g −1 ) at 1 A g −1 and a long-term cycling stability by retaining 94.3% after 2000 cycles in 2 M KOH. Moreover, the asymmetric supercapacitor of MoS 2 /NiCoHC as the positive electrode and commercial active carbon as the negative electrode achieves a high power density of 375 W kg −1 at 16.4 Wh kg −1 . The enhanced performance of the MoS 2 /NiCoHC composite can be attributed to the larger surface area provided by 3D flower-like structure and the synergy of the two hybrids.

Novel three-dimensional Ni2P-MoS2 heteronanosheet arrays for highly efficient electrochemical overall water splitting

Bo Zhang,Keke Xu,Xiuli Fu,Shundong Guan,Xiaomeng Li,Zhijian Peng

Nowadays, it is still a great challenge to explore highly active and stable noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for sustainable overall water splitting. In this work, a novel electrode of three-dimensional network-like Ni 2 P-MoS 2 heterogeneous nanosheet arrays on carbon cloth (HNSAs/CC) was designed and fabricated by a two-step strategy. Benefiting from the unique 3D hierarchical architecture, large specific surface area, synergistic effects between Ni 2 P and MoS 2 , and the support of highly conductive carbon cloth, the obtained electrode exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) in 1 mol L −1 KOH aqueous solution with extremely low overpotentials of 78 and 258 mV respectively to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . The electrocatalytic system assembled with the obtained Ni 2 P-MoS 2 HNSAs/CC sample as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting requires an impressively low onset potential of only 1.574 V to attain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and displays an excellent long-term stability. According to density functional theory calculation, the enhanced water splitting activity could be mainly attributed to the modified interfacial electronic structures and the enhanced thermoneutral adsorption of absorbates on the surface of Ni 2 P (110) – MoS 2 (100) heterostructure . The calculated theoretical overpotentials for HER and OER based on Ni 2 P (110) – MoS 2 (100) heterostructure are 0.019 and 0.279 V, respectively. The facile synthesis method and insights into the HER and OER active interfaces reported here will advance the development of high-performance bifunctional overall water splitting electrocatalysts.
