In order to promote the heavy metal ions removal of porous gel adsorbent and protect the adsorbent from other pollutants in wastewater, the tetrapod ZnO whiskers (tZnO) modified by amino-chain brush was introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix to prepare the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites with brush structure for toxic Pb(II) removal. The adsorption property, adsorption process and adsorption mechanism were studied by adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, adsorption thermodynamics, SEM-EDS analysis and XPS analysis. And the anti-interference ability and anti-interference mechanism were researched by SEM-EDS analysis and XPS analysis. It was found that the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites displayed a soft-hard compound pore-brush structure and showed a good selective adsorption on Pb(II). The research of isotherms and kinetics indicated that the adsorption process was fitted well to Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively, and the research of thermodynamics revealed the endothermic nature. The adsorption mechanism was inferred as the combination of predominant chemisorption and subsidiary physisorption. Comparing with the neat PVA matrix, the PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO composites displayed a good anti-interference property on Pb(II) adsorption and showed an alleviative clogging pore-canal structure in the wastewater with SiO 2 NPs or PAC flocculants . The anti-interference intensity ΔQ and anti-interference factor χ were proposed to reflect the anti-interference ability of this adsorbent which was promoted with the increasing amino brush length or density. By the analysis of SEM-EDS and XPS, the anti-interference mechanism was explored as the steric-hinerance effect of tZnO hard brush to suspended SiO 2 NPs pollutant and the coordination effect of functional amino soft brush to soluble PAC pollutant. Besides, the prepared PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO adsorbent possessed a good reusability under multiple adsorption-desorption processes and also presented a well applicability in real water matrix. The research indicated the huge potential of prepared PVA/NH 2 @TAtZnO adsorbent in heavy metal ions removal.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria and biofilms are among the most difficult challenges in infection treatment. Herein, lignin-copper sulfide (LS-CuS) nanocomposites were incorporated into a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel to fabricate a LS-CuS@PVA composite hydrogel with near-infrared-activated photothermal, photodynamic, and peroxidase-like performance. The antibacterial tests of LS-CuS@PVA exhibited the highest antibacterial rate that caused 3.8-log and 4.8-log reductions of colony forming units (CFUs) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence of H2O2 under near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation for 10 min. The significantly improved bactericidal performance could be attributed to the synergistic effects of hyperthermia and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Furthermore, the LS-CuS@PVA hydrogel could eradicate the already formed biofilm and inhibit biofilm formation. Considering the highly effective antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the LS-CuS@PVA hydrogel, this work could provide new insights for the design of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based composite hydrogels for wound healing and wound dressing.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hydrophobic membranes used in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) processes were prone to fouling and wetting by oil and surfactants, which hampered their broad industrial application. In this work, a new Janus composite membrane was developed by modifying UiO-66-NH 2 with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a cross-linking agent and immobilizing the modified UiO-66-NH 2 on the PTFE membrane by vacuum filtration. By tuning the ratio of PVA to MOF , an optimally proportioned Janus membrane was obtained, and its performance was tested in DCMD experiments through the use of a sodium chloride feed solution containing hexadecane and sodium dodecyl sulfate. The top layer of this Janus membrane exhibited underwater oleophobicity (130.1 ± 0.96°) and hydrophilicity in the air (54.0 ± 0.92°), while the bottom layer is hydrophobic (132.3 ± 0.97°). Compared to the pristine PTFE membrane, the modified Janus membrane demonstrated promising resistance to both membrane fouling and wetting of oils and surfactants. The desalination rate of 99.99% was still achieved within 24 h with the conductivity remaining lower than 10 μS/cm and the flux maintained at 21.3 L/(m 2 ·h). As a result, the Janus composite membrane developed in this study was shown to be a prospective alternative for treating wastewater containing oily substances and surfactants in a resourceful manner.

Practical applications usually require solid conductive hydrogels with outstanding mechanical stability for flexible energy storage devices. Herein, a synergistic strategy of acetic acid induction and salting-out is proposed to achieve strong and tough conductive poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels for flexible solid-state supercapacitors. Acetic acid introduced into the PVA/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) system robbed the hydrogen bonding sites of DMSO bound to the hydroxyl groups of PVA, further encouraging the restoration of intra/inter-chain hydrogen bonds of PVA to form an organic pre-gel. Immersion of the PVA pre-gel in salt solution triggers the salting-out process coupled with solvent exchange, facilitating the structural microdomain densification and homogenization, forming a densely cross-linking network and endowing the synergistic PVA hydrogel with splendid mechanical capabilities (strength of 9.06 MPa, 1763% fracture elongation, and toughness of 85.8 MJ m−3). Attributed to the incorporation of ions, the synergistic PVA hydrogel attains satisfactory ionic conductivity (18.02 mS cm−1). The assembled supercapacitor based on synergistic PVA hydrogels and carbon cloth/polyaniline composite electrodes delivers a prominent areal-specific capacitance of 73.13 mF cm−2 at 0.5 mA cm−2 and can achieve stable output even under deformation. A practical and efficient avenue for constructing strong tough conductive hydrogels is developed in this work, which has great potential for use in energy storage devices.

A highly active and recyclable catalyst for the deposition of Au nanoparticles on the surface of polydopamine-functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol) macroporous beads was fabricated through the oxidative polymerization of dopamine and in-situ reduction route. The morphology and structure of PVA-PDA@Au beads were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , X-ray power diffraction and N 2 adsorption–desorption measurement. The as-prepared PVA-PDA@Au beads combined the advantages of PVA-PDA beads and Au NPs. PVA-PDA@Au beads exhibited enhanced catalytic activity towards the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in the presence of NaBH 4 with removal efficiency up to 99.5% in 5 min at an initial RhB concentration of 100 mg/L and a catalyst amount of 0.5 g/L. PVA-PDA@Au beads could be easily separated and recycled from the reaction system by simple filtration, and reused for the degradation of RhB in six consecutive cycles with a conversion of >99%. Moreover, the mechanism for the degradation of RhB by PVA-PDA@Au beads was proposed. In addition, the catalytic ability of PVA-PDA@Au beads was further studied to remove Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), in which approximately 100% TBBPA (initial concentration of 25 mg/L) was removed within 90 min. In practical application, RhB as a pollutant in river water was degraded rapidly by PVA-PDA@Au beads with removal efficiency higher than 94%. Thus, PVA-PDA@Au beads possessed high catalytic activity, fast reduction rate and good reusability as well as easy separation and simple preparation, endowing this catalyst with potential application prospect in the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants.

In this work, a novel electrospun β-cyclodextrin (β-CD)/chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber membrane was prepared to simultaneously and rapidly remove organic and heavy metal micropollutants. The preparation conditions were optimized by multi-objective response surface methodology, and obtained as follows: 100% of the amount of β-CD (relative to PVA), 49.49% of the amount of CS (relative to PVA), 20 cm of the distance between the needle tip and the collector drum, 0.23 mL h −1 of the flow rate of the spinning solution, and 8.72% of the amount of PVA (relative to water). The characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed a well cross-linked β-CD/CS/PVA nanofiber membrane was formed. In the static and dynamic adsorption experiments, the results demonstrated that the β-CD/CS/PVA nanofiber membrane was highly efficient in simultaneous and rapid removal of organic and heavy metal micropollutants in water treatment process.

A composite Fabry-Perot (F-P) fiber optic sensor based on the vernier effect is fabricated, and experiments confirmed that it can be used to simultaneously measure underwater temperature and pH. The fiber optic sensor fabricated with single mode fiber (SMF) − multi mode fiber (MMF) − seven core fiber (SCF) − quartz capillary tube (QCT) − no core fiber (NCF) structures has contained a silane coupling agent-polyvinyl alcohol/graphene oxide (SCA-PVA/GO) hybrid multilayer film to enhance the sensor performance. Two types of sensors are fabricated, one with a plane end face and another with a tapered end surface, which named as sensor 1 and sensor 2, respectively. Their performance are experimentally demonstrated. Within the temperature range of 15°C-35°C and the pH range of 7.55–9.21, the sensitivities of sensor 1 to temperature and pH are 82.94 pm/°C and 1.16 dB/pH, while the corresponding values of sensor 2 are 39.26 pm/°C and 0.4 dB/pH. Experimental results demonstrated that the sensitivities of sensor 1 to temperature and pH are higher than that of sensor 2. But compared with sensor 2, sensor 1 has higher values of crosstalk and random error. By contrast, sensor 2 maintain a good linear relationship with the environmental dual parameters, allowing for the simultaneous measurement of underwater temperature and pH. Moreover, both sensors demonstrate good stability and reversibility when the temperature and pH are varied. Furthermore, the pH response times of the two sensors are less than 0.5 s, with a recovery time of 2 s. Thus, the proposed sensors with outstanding stability, reversibility, repeatability, and rapid response times will have a broad range of applications in the fields of marine environment monitoring, water quality detection, and food and medical device safety testing.

PVA-based conductive hydrogels have enormous potential for applications in wearable flexible electronic devices, but their low ionic conductivity and mechanical strength hinder their practical utility. To address this challenge, we propose a PVA-based incorporating metal salt and zwitterion. We use PA(phytic acid) and HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) - compatible properties to prepare PSBMA 1 -PMAZ 1.5 interpenetrating conductive hydrogel with good electrical signal responsiveness, repeatability, compression resistance, and low hysteresis (≤11.68 %). The hydrogel-based flexible strain sensor has a wide detection range, high sensitivity (GF = 1.1 at 0 − 600 %), stable electrical signal response to variations in temperature and humidity, and human movement detection capabilities. The detection range of hydrogel - based supercapacitors is 25 °C - 40 °C, which indicates that the device assembled with activated carbon as the electrode has good capacitance characteristics, and the multifunctional characteristics of PSBMA 1 -PMAZ 1.5 hydrogels are poised to serve as a demonstration for a new generation of flexible electronic products.

Preparing wound dressing with dual-delivery of antioxidant and antibacterial agents is highly desirable in clinical wound treatment. Herein, a series of coaxial nanofiber membranes loaded with antioxidant tea polyphenols (TP) in the core and antibacterial ε-poly (L-lysine) (ε-PL) in the shell layer were successfully fabricated by coaxial electrospinning. The physicochemical characterizations by transmission electron microscopy , inverted fluorescence microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the formation of core-shell structure. The results of in vitro drug release indicated that ε-PL exhibited a fast release profile while TP released in a sustained manner, which is favorable to the achievement of quick bacteria inhibition in the initial phase as well as long-term antioxidant activity during wound healing. The antioxidant activity of coaxial nanofibers was found to be increased with the increment of TP content and incubation time . The antibacterial assays against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated that the incorporation of ε-PL in the coaxial nanofibers led to strong antibacterial activity . Additionally, all the coaxial nanofibers possessed good cytocompatibility. Therefore, the prepared coaxial nanofibers simultaneously incorporated with ε-PL and TP are promising as potential wound dressing materials.

A multifunctional and flexible Pd decorated Polydopamine-SiO 2 /PVA electrospun nanofiber membrane was developed by a facile, green, one-step reduction and fixation strategy for simultaneously removal of multiple pollutants from water. Pd NPs were reduced in a mild and green environment with the deposition of dopamine, avoiding secondary pollution of water. The in situ reduced Pd NPs were evenly distributed and firmly immobilized on the nanofiber membrane, effectively avoids the aggregation, thereby greatly improving the catalytic activity . After a single filtration, the developed membrane can simultaneously remove oils, organic chemicals and dyes from water with a high flux (up to 8000 L m −2 ·h −1 ). The removal efficiency for organic chemicals and oils can reach to 99.9% and the degradation efficiency for dyes (e.g., MB and CR) are also very high, up to 99%. More interestingly, the membrane showed robust mechanical properties and corrosion resistance , that can be used in acidic, alkaline, salty and even hot water environment. Besides, the membrane can be reused for at least 10 separation cycles without a significant reduction in separation efficiency, demonstrating excellent reusability and stability.

As conventional treatments for diabetic wounds often fail to achieve rapid satisfactory healing, the development of effective strategies to accelerate diabetic wound repair is highly demanded. Herein, fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) and metformin co-loaded multifunctional polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel were fabricated for improved diabetic wound healing. The in vitro results proved that the hydrogel was adhesive and injectable, and that it could particularly scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROSs), while the in vivo data demonstrated that the hydrogel could promote angiogenesis by recruiting endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) through upregulation of Ang-1. Both ROSs’ removal and EPCs’ recruitment finally resulted in enhanced diabetic wound healing. This work opens a strategy approach to diabetic wound management by combining biological macromolecules and small chemical molecules together using one promising environmental modulating drug delivery system.
