Functionality of wheat straw-derived biochar enhanced its efficiency for actively capping Cd and Pb in contaminated water and soil matrices: Insights through batch adsorption and flow-through experiments

Yasir Hamid,Yonglong Chen,Qiang Lin,Muhammad Haris,Muhammad Usman,Muhammad Saqib Rashid,Ioannis Anastopoulos,Bilal Hussain,Hayssam M. Ali,Fakhir Hannan,Xianyuan Yin,Xiaoe Yang

The impact of functionality of biochar on pressing environmental issue of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) co-contamination in simultaneous soil and water systems has not sufficiently reported. This study investigated the impact of Fe- and Mg-functionalized wheat straw biochar (Fe-WSBC and Mg-WSBC) on Cd and Pb adsorption/immobilization through batch sorption and column leaching trials. Importantly, Fe-WSBC was more effective in adsorbing Cd and Pb (82.84 and 111.24 mg g −1 ), regeneration ability (removal efficiency 94.32 and 92.365), and competitive ability under competing cations (83.15 and 84.36%) compared to other materials (WSBC and Mg-WSBC). The practical feasibility of Fe-WSBC for spiked river water verified the 92.57% removal of Cd and 85.73% for Pb in 50 mg L −1 and 100 mg L −1 contamination, respectively. Besides, the leaching of Cd and Pb with Fe-WSBC under flow-through conditions was lowered to (0.326 and 17.62 mg L −1 ), respectively as compared to control (CK) (0.836 and 40.40 mg L −1 ). In short, this study presents the applicable approach for simultaneous remediation of contaminated water and soil matrices, offering insights into environmentally friendly green remediation strategies for heavy metals co-contaminated matrices.

Fabrication of (amino)thiol chelating agents on SBA-15 and MCM-41 and applications in the extraction of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) cations from aqueous solutions

Maqinana Siphosethu,Kowenje Chrispin B. O.,Ojwach Stephen O.

Reactions of N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)isophthalamide with (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (3-APTES) afforded the the corresponding Schiff base chelating ligand, (1Z,3Z)-N 1 ,N 3 -bis(2-mercaptoethyl)-N' 1 ,N' 3 bis(3(triethoxysilyl)propyl) isophthalimidamide ( L1 ) in high yields. Subsequent immobilization of L1 on mesoporous silica supports (SBA-15 and MCM-41) following a divergent method produced the respective fabricated L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials. Characterization of the fabricated chelating agents was accomplished using SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, PXRD, FT-IR, and TGA-DTA/DSC techniques. The fabricated materials were used as adsorbents for the removal of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cr(VI) metal ions from water. Both the L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 materials demonstrated high extraction efficiencies for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, achieving over 98% and 97% removal, respectively, across a broad pH range (3–9). For Cr(VI) anions, relatively lower optimal extraction efficiencies of 67% and 77% were recorded between pH 3–12, for L1@SBA-15 and L1@MCM-41 , adsorbents, respectively. Faster extraction kinetics were observed for Cd(II) and Pb(II) cations, with over 94% removal achieved within 30 min, even at low initial metal concentrations (5 ppm) and adsorbent dosages (10 mg). Kinetic modelling showed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo -second-order kinetics, with high correlation coefficients (R 2 ) for Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI) of 0.97573, 0.97348, and 0.91017 using L1@MCM-41 , and 0.9754, 0.97089, and 0.89411 using L1@SBA-15 , respectively. Equilibrium data best fitted the Freundlich isotherm model, with R 2 values of 0.97952, 0.99892, and 0.97374 for L1@SBA-15 and 0.99879, 0.99999, and 0.90923 for L1@MCM-41 , corresponding to Cd(II), Pb(II), and Cr(VI), respectively. In competitive metal ion systems, the extraction selectivity followed the order Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Cr(VI), with L1@SBA-15 exhibiting superior overall performance compared to L1@MCM-41 . The extraction mechanism was postulated to occur through the coordination of the metal ions to the nitrogen/sulfur donor atoms in the chelating agents, consistent with the hard and soft acid and base (HSAB) principle. Furthermore, L1@MCM-41 demonstrated notable regeneration potential, retaining Cr(VI) extraction efficiencies over four successive cycles. Graphical

Sensitive detection of Golgi protein 73 by magnetic separation combined with a dual nanozyme MOF-818 and magnetic nucleus@bifunctional shell (Fe3O4@PB-Au) cascade reaction catalytic amplification strategy

Wei Li,Xin Hu,Anyi Chen,Rongxin Wu,Chaorui Li

Metal–organic framework (MOF-818) and nanocomposite (Fe3O4@PB-Au) dual nanozymes for enhanced cascade signal amplification were designed. MOF-818 has excellent catechol oxidase mimetic activity and catalyzes the production of color and in situ generation of hydrogen peroxide from the substrate 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC). Subsequently, Fe3O4@PB-Au with peroxidase-like activity catalyzes the generation of reactive oxygen species from hydrogen peroxide, which oxidizes 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to generate the oxidized state of oxTMB, resulting in a signal-enhancing effect. The prepared dual nanozymes can be combined with aptamers with specific recognition ability, thus developing a colorimetric aptamer sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity for detecting Golgi protein 73, which provides a feasible assay for clinical detection of GP73 protein. Detection of GP73 was accomplished by measuring the UV absorption peak at 415 nm. Under the optimal conditions, the concentration of GP73 was linearly correlated with the absorbance in the range of 10.0–100.0 ng mL−1 with a detection limit of 1.83 ng mL−1. The proposed colorimetric biosensor was successfully applied to the determination of GP73 in spiked human serum samples with recoveries of 96.15–100.95% and RSDs of 1.52–6.85%, which demonstrated the great potential of the highly sensitive GP73 assay in clinical detection.

Preparation of polyethylenimine and carboxymethyl cellulose co-modified magnetic bentonite for enhanced adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) based on the concept of mesh bag and octopus-like tentacle

Tang Rui,Zhang Hanbing,Muhammad Yaseen,Lu Caimei,Liu Kun,Yu Sishan,Tong Zhangfa

Magnetic bentonite (MB) is a cheap, effective and recyclable adsorbent for the removal of many pollutants. However, further enhancing the adsorption performance of pristine MB and eliminating the instability of Fe 3 O 4 magnetic particles in MB are vital and urgent for practical applications. Based on the principles of washing mesh bag and octopus tentacle, mesh-bag-like modifiers with tentacle-like structure of octopus were synthesized via grafted reaction of polyethylenimine (PEI) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) to cover MB. As compared with the pristine MB, CMC-MB and PEI-MB, the magnetic bentonite adsorbent co-modified by PEI and CMC (CMC/PEI-MB) exhibited more multi-adsorption sites, stronger capture effects of tentacle for heavy metals and more effective mesh-bag-protection for Fe 3 O 4 . Attributed to these fascinating properties, CMC/PEI-MB achieved faster adsorption rates (the values of k 2 of Pb(II) and Cd(II) were 73.0 g mg ‒1 min ‒1 and 17.4 g  mg ‒1  min ‒1 ) and elevated adsorption capacities (760 mg g ‒1 and 470 mg g ‒1 ) for 1500 mg L ‒1 Pb(II) and 1000 mg L ‒1 Cd(II) in a wider pH range (3–7). Moreover, the reutilization rate of Pb(II) and Cd(II) over CMC/PEI-MB still remained 90% after five successive recycles. XRD and FT-IR results indicated that the structure of CMC/PEI-MB was well persevered after desorption, and the corresponding maximum desorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from CMC/PEI-MB were 624 mg g ‒1 and 362 mg g ‒1 within 1 h, respectively. The findings of this study provide an interesting and effective approach for the construction of superior adsorbents basing on customary phenomena for the remediation of heavy metals from wastewater. Development of a tetra-elemental speciation method for simultaneously quantifying Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds in shrimp and fish by high-performance liquid chromatography–inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Pingxiu Zeng,Feng Guo,Yuanchao Wang,Hongmei Hu,Jinhua Liu,Heyong Cheng

Cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead are four widespread metals in our environment from natural sources and human activities, and their toxic, metabolic, and bioavailable properties are chemical form-dependent. Considering large sample capacity in food, environmental and related fields, efficient, sensitive, inexpensive, and green methodologies are preferred for quantifying cadmium, tin, mercury, and lead compounds in an analytical trial. Herein we proposed a tetra-elemental method for simultaneous measurement of Cd, Sn, Hg, and Pb compounds by interfacing high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The tetra-elemental method measured 12 metal compounds within 24 min in satisfactory precisions (<4.3 %) and low detection limits (0.022, 0.011–0.15, 0.016–0.028, and 0.013–0.021 μg L −1 for Cd(II), five tin compounds, three mercury compounds, and three lead compounds, respectively). By applying the proposed tetra-elemental speciation method to shrimp and fish, we found Cd(II) (0.043 mg kg −1 ) presented only in shrimp and methylmercury (0.8–4.6 μg kg −1 ) in both shrimp and fish with the absence of all targeted Sn and Pb compounds, which were far below the maximum limits by China GB 2762-2022. Overall, the proposed method offered significant advantages in analytical, economic and environmental aspects with good applicability to a wide range of food, environmental, and biological samples.

Simultaneous determination of trace Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry using a reduced graphene oxide-chitosan/poly-l-lysine nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode

Zhuo Guo,Dong-di Li,Xian-ke Luo,Ya-hui Li,Qi-Nai Zhao,Meng-meng Li,Yang-ting Zhao,Tian-shuai Sun,Chi Ma

The reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and Chitosan (CS) hybrid matrix RGO-CS were coated onto the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface, then, poly- l -lysine films (PLL) were prepared by electropolymerization with cyclic voltammetry (CV) method to prepare RGO-CS/PLL modified glassy carbon electrode (RGO-CS/PLL/GCE) for the simultaneous electrochemical determination of heavy metal ions Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II). Combining the advantageous features of RGO and CS, RGO and CS are used together because the positively charged CS can interact with the negatively changed RGO to prevent their aggregation. Furthermore, CS has many amino groups along its macromolecular chains and possessed strongly reactive with metal ions. Moreover, PLL modified electrodes have good stability, excellent permselectivity, more active sites and strong adherence to electrode surface, which enhanced electrocatalytic activity . The RGO-CS/PLL/GCE was characterized voltammetrically using redox couples (Fe(CN) 6 3−/4− ), complemented with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) has been used for the detection of Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II). The detection limit of RGO-CS/PLL/GCE toward Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) is 0.01   μg   L −1 , 0.02   μg   L −1 and 0.02   μg   L −1 , respectively. The electrochemical parameters that exert influence on deposition and stripping of metal ions, such as supporting electrolytes , pH value, deposition potential, and deposition time, were carefully studied.

Weiming Zhang,Peng Huang,Xinyu Lu,Tao Chen,Xuemin Duan,Yangping Wen,Liping Deng,Jingkun Xu

It's very essential to exploit a portable wireless integrated sensing platform for field simultaneous, on-site detection of heavy metal ions pollution that has been exhibited to Serious ecological and health risks even under trace levels, including Cd (II) and Pb (II) ions. In this work, we developed a portable sensing platform, consisting of an integrated screen-printed electrode (SPE) with the calcium/aluminum-layered double hydroxide (CaAl-LDH) nanocomposite based on carboxyl functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH), a hand-held wireless electrochemical potentiostat and a tablet with a specially designed app, for field simultaneous rapid detection of both Cd (II) and Pb (II) in water environmental sample. The CaAl-LDH was produced through a facilely hydrothermal method, and the CaAl-LDH nanocomposite with MWCNTs-COOH was prepared by a one-step ultrasonic route, which demonstrated superior sensing performance for simultaneous determination of both Cd (II) and Pb (II) with a broad detection range (2–250 μg L−1 for Cd (II) and 5–250 μg L−1 Pb (II)) and low limit of detection (LOD) (0.96 μg L−1 Cd (II) and 0.74 μg L−1 for Pb (II)).Furthermore, the proposed tablet-operated portable wireless sensing platform was utilized for detection of both Cd (II) and Pb (II) in farmland irrigation canals with acceptable recoveries.

A novel magnetic sludge biochar was prepared by making full use of internal iron in sludge combining KMnO4–NaOH modification to enhance the adsorption of Pb (Ⅱ), Cu (Ⅱ) and Cd (Ⅱ)

Zhiliang Cui,Guoren Xu,Banu Ormeci,Jiayin Hao

This study synthesized novel magnetic biochar (PCMN600) by KMnO 4 –NaOH combined modification using iron-containing pharmaceutical sludge to remove toxic metals from wastewater effectively. Various characterization experiments of engineered biochar showed that the modification process introduced ultrafine MnO x particles on the carbon surface and resulted in higher BET surface area and porosity along with more oxygen-containing surface functional groups. Batch adsorption studies indicated that the maximum adsorption capacities of PCMN600 for Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ were 181.82 mg/g, 30.03 mg/g and 27.47 mg/g, respectively, at a temperature of 25 °C and pH of 5.0, which were much higher than that of pristine biochar (26.46 mg/g, 6.56 mg/g and 6.40 mg/g). The adsorption datums of three toxic metal ions fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm, and the sorption mechanisms were identified as electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, cation-π interaction and precipitation. The strong magnetic properties of the engineered biochar endowed the adsorbent with remarkable reusability, and after five cycles of recycling, PCMN600 still retained nearly 80% of its initial adsorption capacities.

AE2[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb): A New Type of Inorganic Compound Synthesized through the Recombination of Tellurium(IV) Oxide Anion Fragments by Introducing Post-transition-metal Halide NiCl2

Chang-Yu Meng,Feng Feng Huang,Qin Yao Li,Lei Geng

Introduction of divalent metal oxides into the TeO2 matrix can produce the chemical formula Mn[TemO2m+n] ≡ (MO)n(TeO2)m, compounds in which divalent metal oxides provide oxygen ions to the parent compound TeO2, to cleave neutral Te–O net to form various tellurium(IV) oxide anion [TemO2m+n]2n− and divalent metal cations as balanced charges. [TemO2m+n]2n− can form isolated anion, discrete polyanion, one-dimensional chain and ribbon polyanion, two-dimensional (2D) layered polyanion, and 3D tunnel polyanion depending on the ratio of MO/TeO2. In this work, a new type of inorganic compound AE2[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] ≡ [(AEO)2(TeO2)4](NiCl2) (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) can be obtained by introducing NiCl2 into the compound AE2[Te4O10] ≡ (AEO)2(TeO2)4 (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb). In AE2[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] ≡ [(AEO)2(TeO2)4](NiCl2), AEO acts as a structural shearing agent to cleave the neutral Te–O layered structures of parent TeO2 into [Te4O10]4– anionic fragments, and the introduced NiCl2 acts as an “adhesive” to recombine [TemO2m+n]2n− anionic fragments to form new [Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] anionic framework and does not provide additional oxygen ions to cleave the parent compound TeO2. AE2[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] compounds feature 2D 2∞[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] anionic layers composed by TeO4E, TeO3+1E (where E is the lone pair of electrons of TeIV) distorted trigonal bipyramid, and NiO4Cl2 octahedra, and the spaces between 2∞[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] layers are filled with AE2+ cations (acting as charge balance) as well as E (protruding from sides of the layers). The optical band gaps of AE2[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) were evaluated to be ∼3.69 eV through extrapolating the UV–vis–near-infrared optical absorption spectra. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry measurements indicate that Ca-, Sr-, Ba-, and Pb-compounds are stable below 787, 716, 648, and 517 °C, respectively, under flowing N2 atmosphere. The effective moments estimated by Curie–Weiss equation show that the Ni2+ cations of AE2[Ni(Te4O10)Cl2] (AE = Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb) are all in high-spin ground states.

Functionalization of a SiO2-coated magnetic graphene oxide composite with polyaniline–polypyrrole for magnetic solid phase extraction of ultra-trace Cr(III) and Pb(II) in water and food samples using a Box–Behnken design

Lingzhe Suo,Jing Zhao,Xinyi Dong,Xun Gao,Xinzhu Li,Jianfeng Xu,Xiumei Lu,Longshan Zhao

A novel polyaniline–polypyrrole functionalized SiO2-coated magnetic graphene oxide composite (MGO/SiO2@PANI–PPy) was prepared as a new magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbent for separation and pre-concentration of chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) at trace levels in food and environmental water samples followed by the use of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the nanocomposite. Various parameters affecting the extraction yield of heavy metals were optimized using a Box–Behnken design (BBD) through the response surface methodology (RSM). Under optimum conditions, the limits of detection (LODs) were 4.808 ng L−1 for Cr(III) and 3.401 ng L−1 for Pb(II) with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of less than 5% (n = 6). Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacities of this new sorbent were 188.9 and 213.3 mg g−1 for Cr(III) and Pb(II), respectively. Finally, the developed method was successfully applied for determination of trace Cr(III) and Pb(II) in rice, milk, wine and environmental water samples with recoveries within 95.4–105%.

Balancing Bioresponsive Biofilm Eradication and Guided Tissue Repair via Pro-Efferocytosis and Bidirectional Pyroptosis Regulation during Implant Surgery

Zhengxi Wang,Xudong Zhang,Quan Liu,Xianli Hu,Jiawei Mei,Jun Zhou,Xianzuo Zhang,Dongdong Xu,Wanbo Zhu,Zheng Su,Chen Zhu

There is an increasingly growing demand to balance tissue repair guidance and opportunistic infection (OI) inhibition in clinical implant surgery. Herein, we developed a nanoadjuvant for all-stage tissue repair guidance and biofilm-responsive OI eradication via in situ incorporating Cobaltiprotoporphyrin (CoPP) into Prussian blue (PB) to prepare PB-CoPP nanozymes (PCZs). Released CoPP possesses a pro-efferocytosis effect for eliminating apoptotic and progressing necrotic cells in tissue trauma, thus preventing secondary inflammation. Once OIs occur, PCZs with switchable nanocatalytic capacity can achieve bidirectional pyroptosis regulation. Once reaching the acidic biofilm microenvironment, PCZs possess peroxidase (POD)-like activity that can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) to eradicate bacterial biofilms, especially when synergized with the photothermal effect. Furthermore, generated ROS can promote macrophage pyroptosis to secrete inflammatory cytokines and antimicrobial proteins for biofilm eradication in vivo. After eradicating the biofilm, PCZs possess catalase (CAT)-like activity in a neutral environment, which can scavenge ROS and inhibit macrophage pyroptosis, thereby improving the inflammatory microenvironment. Briefly, PCZs as nanoadjuvants feature the capability of all-stage tissue repair guidance and biofilm-responsive OI inhibition that can be routinely performed in all implant surgeries, providing a wide range of application prospects and commercial translational value.
