The detection of carbohydrate antigen 19 − 9 (CA19-9), a critical serum marker for gastrointestinal malignancies, is particularly challenging because of its typically low concentration and substantial matrix interference, creating a critical demand for improved detection technologies. Herein, we rationally designed and synthesized a nanozyme with dual-ligand cerium-organic framework (Ce-MOF-BN) nanozyme for glycosyl-imprinted colorimetric biosensing via a one-pot method. The crystalline porous framework is densely functionalized on its surface with spatially accessible amino and boronic acid groups, enabling the recognition and oriented immobilization of imprinting templates. A well-defined core–shell molecularly imprinted composite was successfully fabricated through the systematic optimization of the ligand ratio. The composite exhibits intrinsic oxidase-like activity without requiring H 2 O 2 , and the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) shell supplies specific cavities for the highly selective recognition of CA19-9. Under optimized assay conditions, the sensor achieves the quantitative detection of CA19-9 across a broad linear range of 0.0001–100 U/mL, with a limit of detection as low as 2.7 × 10 − 5 U/mL. This work provides valuable insights for designing next-generation high performance biomimetic sensing materials and advancing their clinical diagnostic applications. Cerium(III) oxygenated domain has been successfully decorated on the surface of PtCo particles. • The control of *CHO adsorption at Pt–O–Ce(III) interface achieves a non-CO pathway for MOR. • The *HCOOH deprotonation kinetics governed by the coverage of cerium(III) oxidation domain affects the overpotential of MOR. • The Ce-PtCo/C catalyst achieves a mass activity that is 4.8 times as high as that of Pt/C. The poisoning of *CO remains a longstanding challenge for Pt-based catalysts in methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). This study demonstrates that the non-CO pathway is governed by the moderate adsorption of *CHO species and the ability to rapidly oxidize intermediate, both of which can be fulfilled by the Pt-O-Ce(III) interface rather than Pt-O-Ce(IV). In contrast to traditional CeO 2 -supported Pt-based catalyst, this surface-modified Pt-based catalyst has been constructed with abundant Pt-O-Ce(III) interface, providing stable and sufficient active sites to simultaneously optimize the above two factors to catalyze MOR with non-CO pathway. Furthermore, we first reveal that the coverage of this Pt-O-Ce(III) interface is crucial. By rationally regulating the coverage of cerium(III) oxygenated domains, we modulate the thermodynamic adsorption properties of key intermediate species without affecting the subsequent deprotonation kinetics of *HCOOH, thereby achieving the maximum leverage. This novel catalyst steering the non-CO pathway shows promising application potential in actual DMFCs. Download: Download high-res image (137KB) Download: Download full-size image

A novel phage HH3 of E. coli was isolated and characterized. • A colorimetric sensor was developed for E. coli detection within 35 min. • The biosensor shows high sensitivity and accuracy in various food and water matrices. • The biosensor exhibited a wide linear range and a low LOD of 3.2 CFU/mL. • It distinguishes viable E. coli from dead cells, beyond conventional methods. A phage HH3-functionalized Ce-UiO-66-NH₂ nanozyme-based colorimetric biosensor was developed for the quantification of viable Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), overcoming the drawbacks of slow detection and inadequate live/dead bacterial discrimination in conventional analytical methods. The proposed platform achieves target detection within 35 min, with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 3.2 CFU/mL and satisfactory spiked recoveries ranging from 82.75% to 122.06%. Mechanistically, Ce-UiO-66-NH₂ exhibits intrinsic oxidase-like activity that directly catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue-colored oxTMB. The color intensity of this chromogenic reaction is positively correlated with E. coli concentration, enabling quantitative analysis. Benefiting from the specific recognition capability of phage HH3, the biosensor shows negligible responses to non-host bacteria and heat-inactivated E. coli . This distinctive advantage cannot be achieved by antibody- or PCR-based strategies. This nanozyme-phage platform outperforms most reported sensors and possesses promising potential for rapid and selective quantification of viable E. coli in complex food and environmental matrices. Cotton-derived carbon coupled with Ce-doped ZnO via in-situ pyrolysis. • Portable Ce-ZnO-CNF@CC/SPE sensor was developed for on-site CPZ detection. • DFT verified optimized electronic structure and accelerated charge transfer. • Ultrasensitive response with a low limit of detection. • Reliable recovery in real samples for environmental monitoring. On-site monitoring of the emerging organic pollutant chlorpromazine (CPZ) is severely limited by the absence of low-cost, portable, and high-performance sensors. Herein, a disposable screen-printed sensor (Ce-ZnO-CNF@CC/SPE) was fabricated by in-situ growing Ce-doped ZIF-8 on cotton-derived carbon, followed by a one-step pyrolysis strategy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that trace Ce doping induces robust p-d-f orbital hybridization with the host lattice without structural disruption. The introduction of Ce 4f impurity levels narrows the band gap and significantly elevates the density of states near the Fermi energy. This robust electronic modulation accelerates charge-transfer kinetics and optimizes the CPZ adsorption affinity. Under optimized conditions, the fabricated sensor exhibited a remarkably broad linear range and an ultra-low limit of detection, along with excellent anti-interference, reproducibility, and stability. Furthermore, highly accurate and reliable recoveries were achieved in complex real-world matrices, including human serum and environmental water samples. This work provides a reliable portable platform for on-site CPZ monitoring and establishes an electronic structure-activity paradigm for designing highly dispersed, biomass-derived carbon-based sensors. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is considered a promising metal oxide due to its good stability and appropriate conduction band potential. However, photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction solely with TiO2 is still limited by the low solar energy conversion efficiency. To enhance the photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction performance, researchers synthesized a composite material based on Er-doped TiO2 and Ce-modified UiO-66(Zr) using a simple solvent evaporation method. The experimental results reveal that compared with pristine UiO-66, this composite material exhibits a significantly improved CO2 conversion rate and product selectivity. The excellent activity of this catalyst is attributed to the direct Z-type heterojunction, which greatly improves photogenerated charge separation. Furthermore, UiO-66 (Zr/Ce)/Er-TiO2 (henceforth U1(0.5% Er-T3)) composite material exhibited excellent cycling stability in five consecutive stability tests, indicating long-term application potential. This research underscores the importance of designing and modifying MOF-based photocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction and provides valuable insights for the development of sustainable energy conversion systems.

In the present study, a facile solvothermal method was used for the synthesis of silicotungstic acid (HSiW) immobilized on Ce-based metal organic framework (Ce-BDC) and embedded in Zr-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66(Zr)) composite catalyst, namely, Ce-BDC@HSiW@UiO-66 for the production of biodiesel through green fatty acid esterification. The obtained hybrids were characterized by various characterization technologies, including Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N 2 physisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption of NH 3 (NH 3 -TPD) analysis. The characterization analyses showed that the hybrids have been successfully synthesized. Also, the volume and pore size of UiO-66(Zr) were changed by introducing HSiW@Ce-BDC, and the resulting Ce-BDC@HSiW@UiO-66 possessed the mesoporous structure and relatively high surface area. Simultaneously, the NH 3 -TPD analysis of Ce-BDC@HSiW@UiO-66 reveals that the acid strength was increased in comparison with HSiW@Ce-BDC. In addition, the composite Ce-BDC@HSiW@UiO-66 demonstrated high catalytic activity, and the oleic acid esterification gave 81.5% conversion at optimum conditions of 0.2 g catalysts, 1:30 oleic acid to methanol molar ratio at 130°C for 4 h. More interestingly, after six recycling cycles, the reduction in the conversion rate was only 4.6%, indicating that Ce-BDC@HSiW@UiO-66 has excellent reusability. Our study provides an effective approach to synthesize multifunctional hybrids for green biofuel production.

Al-7Si-0.8Sc-0.6Ce alloys were prepared with combined addition of low-cost Ce and high-priced Sc through molten salt electrolysis with controlled cooling process. The phases of as-casted alloys consisted of α-Al, eutectic silicon , ternary AlSi 2 Sc 2 and CeAl 2 Si 2 . Rapid cooling transformed the huge hollow ternary AlSi 2 Sc 2 blocks (300–500 µm) into fine Al 3 Sc particles (dozens of μm), and simultaneously refined the AlSi 2 Sc 2 with reducing its interlayer thickness from 15.26 µm down to 1.94 µm (the cooling rate from 0.05 K s −1 up to 30 K s −1 ). The eutectic Si became fine fibrous-like clusters and the thickness of CeAl 2 Si 2 phase reduced by 62.6 % when the cooling rate reached 30 K s −1 . Micro-hardness measurement and first principles-based calculation were applied for evaluating the individual mechanical performance of each phase in the alloy. The calculated Young’s modulus (E) suggests that Al 3 Sc (E = 168 GPa), AlSi 2 Sc 2 (E = 178 GPa) and CeAl 2 Si 2 (E = 39.2 GPa) can toughen Al-matrix (E = 30.6 GPa). The rapid cooling (30 K s −1 ) strongly enhances all phase components but diminish the huge hollow AlSi 2 Sc 2 blocks (ultrahigh micro-Vickers hardness ∼ 780 HV), making a homogenous Al-RE alloy with improved mechanical property (68 ∼ 84 HV balanced among phase components). The refining mechanisms on the improved mechanical performance are also discussed.

This study introduces a dual-mode sensing platform based on a cerium-based metal-organic framework (UIO-66-NH 2 (Ce)) that exhibits dual-enzyme-like activity for the sensitive and selective detection of tetracycline (TC) in water and milk. It employs feedback-regulated dual-enzyme cascades along with Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox-mediated ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) to achieve signal inversion in both colorimetric and fluorescence outputs. The phosphatase-like activity of UIO-66-NH 2 (Ce) hydrolyzes L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate (AAP), resulting in the generation of ascorbic acid (AA), which subsequently reduces Ce 4+ to Ce 3+ within UIO-66-NH 2 (Ce). This reduction suppresses its oxidase-like activity while enhancing fluorescence through LMCT inhibition. In the presence of TC, the phosphatase-like activity is selectively inhibited, thereby restoring Ce 4+ -driven oxidase activity and quenching fluorescence. The platform offers broad detection ranges, low limits (5.95 nM fluorescence, 17.54 nM colorimetry), high selectivity, and real sample applicability, with smartphone-based analysis via RGB signals for rapid, on-site testing, aiding environmental and food safety monitoring.

High-entropy zirconates represent one of the most promising thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) materials. In this work, high-entropy fluorite zirconates were synthesized via a reverse coprecipitation route, and their structural, mechanical, and thermal properties were systematically evaluated. All compositions crystallized into single-phase fluorite structure. Sc incorporation enhances hardness, while Ce enrichment promotes thermal expansion behavior. Notably, the Ce-Sc co-doped composition ( x = 0.1) achieves a synergistic optimization of properties, exhibiting low grain growth rate (0.0437 μm·h -1 ), high fracture toughness (1.64 MPa·m 1/2 ), a desirable thermal expansion coefficient (11.65 × 10 -6 K -1 , RT-1500 °C), and ultralow thermal conductivity (0.93 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 1500 °C). The markedly reduced thermal conductivity originates from enhanced phonon scattering induced by severe lattice distortion in the high-entropy fluorite lattice. These findings highlight Ce-Sc co-doping as an effective strategy to simultaneously optimize mechanical and thermal behavior, making the ceramic a strong candidate for advanced TBCs applications under extreme environments.

This work presents a novel strategy for improving the anti-CO poisoning performance of Pt-based catalysts by coupling the electronic states of Mo 4d and Ce 4f to modulate the Pt electronic structure. The introduction of Mo into CeO2 creates a composite support (Mo-CeOx) that induces electron redistribution at the Pt/CeO2 interface, inducing the electronic structure modulation of Pt, thereby influencing the Pt–CO interaction. This electronic tuning not only enhances Pt’s CO tolerance but also promotes charge transfer and improves catalyst stability. Density functional theory calculations and experimental data reveal that Mo doping decreases the formation energy of oxygen vacancies, facilitating Pt stabilization and the generation of active sites. The resulting Pt/Mo-CeOx/rGO catalyst exhibits significantly enhanced methanol oxidation reaction activity, with a mass activity 4.67 times higher than that of the undoped counterpart, alongside excellent CO poisoning resistance and long-term stability. This work introduces a new paradigm for designing highly efficient and durable Pt-based catalysts by leveraging electronic state engineering, offering a powerful approach for tackling CO poisoning in electrocatalysis.

In this study, a duplex coating system (LDH-V/SG-Ce) of vanadate-intercalated layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Ce-doped sol–gel (SG) layers was developed for the purpose of active corrosion protection of the aluminum alloy AA2024. ZnAl-LDH film was grown in situ on the surface of an aluminum alloy using a hydrothermal method and intercalated with V2O74−anions as corrosion inhibitors, and sealed with a Ce (III)-doped silane coating using a sol–gel technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were used to analyze the microstructure, surface functional groups and structure of the LDH-V/SG-Ce film. The uniform and compact silane layer was covered both in the pores and on top of the LDH film. The results of glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) indicated that V2O74−and Ce (III) ions were loaded in the LDH layer and silane film, respectively. The potentiodynamic polarization results showed that the corrosion current density of the bilayer system in the presence of corrosion inhibitors was reduced to 1.92 × 10−8A/cm2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that the LDH-V/SG-Ce duplex coating could provide effective protection for the aluminum alloy after being exposed to a corrosive solution for 14 days. Keywords:layered double hydroxide;silane;films;inhibitor;corrosion resistance;aluminum alloy

Fabrication of adsorbent can play an important role in the adsorption desulfurization technology as a most promising deeply desulfurization technology. Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 aerogel composites were synthesized, where the easy oxidation of Ce 3+ into Ce 4+ was realized by adding hydrogen peroxide, and were utilized to remove thiophenics from model fuels and aromatics. Compared with Ag 2 O/SiO 2 and CeO 2 /SiO 2 , the adsorption uptake and solvent washing regeneration performance of Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 for thiophene was obviously enhanced, and the adsorption selectivity for thiophene in the presence of aromatics was relatively close to CeO 2 /SiO 2 , attributed to that Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 adsorbed thiophenics via the π-Ag + complexation and S-Ce bonding, where the latter was main interaction. However, there was no synergistic interaction between Ag and Ce species acted as adsorption sites in the Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 , which could be supported by that the chemical state of Ag and Ce in Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 was consistent with corresponding one in Ag 2 O/SiO 2 and CeO 2 /SiO 2 , respectively. Among Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 aerogel composites with different molar ratios of Si/Ce, Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 -50 performed the best, its adsorption uptake for thiophene, benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene from model fuels arrived at 20.4, 21.8 and 27.2 mg-S/g ads , respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model could well describe the adsorption of thiophenics over Ag 2 O/CeO 2 /SiO 2 -50.
