Interfacial engineering of ultra-thin PET/Cu composite foils via etching-grafting modification

Li Wang,Hao-wen Zhang,Guo-liang Liu,Di-wen Jiang,Kai-long Li,Jun-yan Lou,Zhe-sheng Feng,Yan Wang

Polyethylene terephthalate/copper (PET/Cu) composite foil, which combines lightweight, flexibility, and excellent electrical conductivity, exhibits promising potential for applications in flexible electronics, portable devices, and lithium-ion battery current collectors. However, achieving efficient and stable metallization of the PET substrate with robust interfacial bonding remains a significant challenge. In this study, an ultra-thin PET/Cu composite foil with excellent adhesion and conductivity was prepared through interfacial engineering. The fabrication process involves oxygen plasma etching, functional silane grafting, and electroplating. The prepared PET/Cu composite foil features a copper layer thickness of approximately 1 μm and presents the adhesion strength meeting the ASTM D3359 5B standard. Meanwhile, the foil achieves a minimum resistivity of 2.137 × 10 −8  Ω m. Compared to the pure copper foil, the PET/Cu composite foil exhibits a 44.89 % reduction in areal mass while maintaining exceptional electrochemical performance, revealing substantial prospects as the next-generation anode current collector for lithium-ion batteries.

Ionomer-Regulated Cu/Co Tandem Catalysis for Efficient Electrochemical Nitrate-to-Ammonia Conversion

Quan Zhou,Lewa Zhang,Ziluo Wang,Qiutong Wang,Chenyuan Zhu

Electrochemical nitrate reduction to ammonia offers a sustainable route for nitrogen fixation, yet achieving high efficiency and selectivity remains challenging. Here, a Sustainion-enabled Cu/Co tandem catalyst is developed to couple compositional synergy with ionomer-mediated interfacial regulation. The optimized Cu60Co40/Sus/C electrode delivers a Faradaic efficiency of 91.3% and an NH3yield rate of 2.63 mmol gcat.−1h−1at −0.3 V vs. RHE, surpassing Cu-Co/Nafion/C and Cu-Co/C counterparts. Structural analyses confirm that Sustainion prevents nanoparticle aggregation and maintains robust Cu/Co interfaces. Electrochemical and in situ spectroscopic studies reveal that the cationic quaternary ammonium groups of Sustainion electrostatically enrich NO3−/NO2−intermediates, facilitating their adsorption and hydrogenation toward NH3formation. The combined structural stabilization and intermediate modulation enable efficient tandem catalysis between Cu-driven nitrate activation and Co-mediated hydrogenation. This work provides molecular-level insight into ionomer–catalyst interactions and highlights interfacial engineering as a powerful strategy for sustainable ammonia synthesis.

Micro-nanostructures fabricated by femtosecond laser for interface joint strengthening of Cu/sapphire

Peilin Cao,Jiahua He,Cong Wang,Kaiwen Ding,Yulong Ding,Dejin Yan,Nai Lin,Ji’an Duan

The reliability of the sapphire-metal joint technology in electronic devices determines its performance for industrial applications. Hence, we propose a method to enhance the connection strength between sapphire and metal based on micro-nanostructures on the substrate surface fabricated by femtosecond laser technology. The micro-nano modification of the substrate surface effectively improves the wettability of the silver paste, contributing to the spreading of the solder. The influence of different substrate surface morphologies on the joint strength is also investigated. It is found that the Cu/ sapphire substrate with cone microstructure arrays has the highest joint strength, reaching 27.2 MPa at a sintering temperature of 300 °C, which is about 4 times increase compared to the flat substrate (7.3 MPa). Further, the effect of different sintering parameters on the joint strength of the cone-structured array substrate is studied. The morphology of the cross-section and shear damage surfaces for connecting structures is analyzed, revealing that the mechanism of interface strength enhancement is mechanical interlocking. This fabrication of micro-nanostructures on substrate surfaces by femtosecond lasers provides a simple and efficient approach for the high-performance joining of ceramics and metals.

Green synthesis of novel in situ micro/submicron-Cu paste for semiconductor interconnection

Yu Zhang,Qiang Liu,Yu Liu,Jin Tong,Zhongwei Huang,Song Wu,Peilin Liang,Guannan Yang,Chengqiang Cui

A green method for the synthesis of in situ Cu paste is developed. Cu particles are prepared through chemical reduction by selecting a special copper source, reducing agent, and solvent. Then the reaction solution is directly concentrated to obtain an in situ Cu paste. The synthesis of Cu particles and the preparation of Cu paste are conducted simultaneously, and the process of separation, purification, drying, storage, and re-dispersion of powder are reduced. Particles are not directly exposed to air, thus the oxidation of micro/submicron -Cu is effectively prevented, and the agglomeration of particles caused by drying and dispersion operations is simultaneously reduced. Furthermore, the proposed method has a certain universality, and different types of Cu sources can be used to prepare in situ paste with different sizes and morphologies. The entire preparation process is simple, efficient, green, and the yield can reach 99.99%, which breaks through the bottleneck of the application of traditional micro/submicron-Cu materials. Copper acetate-based in situ paste is sintered for 30 min at 260 °C and 2 MPa in a reducing atmosphere. The shear strength, resistivity, and thermal conductivity reach 55.26 MPa, 4.01 × 10–8 Ω·m, and 92.75 W/(m·K), respectively, which could meet the interconnection application of power semiconductor devices.

Asymmetric Supercapacitor Based on a 1D Cu-Coordination Polymer with High Cycle Stability

Hongren Rong,Gexiang Gao,Xiaocen Liu,Xiaojuan Chen,Qingyan Jiang,Xiuting Song,Daozhen Shen,Wenlong Liu,Qi Liu

It is a considerably attractive task to search for new high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors from pristine coordination polymers. Herein, a one-dimensional (1D) Cu-based coordination polymer ([Cu(BGPD)(DMF)2(H2O)], Cu-BGPD; BGPD = N,N′-bis(glycinyl)pyromellitic diimide; DMF = dimethylformamide) has been synthesized. When utilized as the electrode material for supercapacitors, in a three-electrode system, the Cu-BGPD electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 1530 F g–1 (corresponding to a specific capacity of 213 mAh g–1) at 1 A g–1 with a capacitance retention of 95.9% after 2000 cycles at 1 A g–1. Impressively, the asymmetric supercapacitor comprising Cu-BGPD as the positive electrode and the rGO as the negative electrode delivers the maximum energy density of 15.25 Wh kg–1 at a power density of 0.85 kW kg–1. Our research shows that it is also a practical way to develop new high-performance electrode materials of supercapacitors from 1D coordination polymers.

Cu(II) Removal from Aqueous Solution by Ultrafiltration Assisted with Chestnut Shell Pigment

Fu Wen-Qiang,Wen Yi,Tang Wen-Jun,Yao Zeng-Yu

Polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) is emerging as a competent technique for removing heavy metal contaminants from effluents. Biopolymers are prospective size-enhancers due to their abundant biodegradable and renewable nature. Melanin is a type of biopolymer that binds heavy metal ions effectively. Chestnut shell pigment (CSP) is the melanin extracted from an agro-waste. This study evaluated the feasibility of employing melanin in PEUF for heavy metal removal from wastewater by using CSP and Cu(II) as the model melanin and heavy metal, respectively. The effects of pH, Cu(II), and CSP concentrations in the feed solution on the Cu(II) removal were investigated. At the optimized condition of pH 6 and a loading ratio of 33.3, more than 99% of the copper was removed by a polyethersulfone membrane with a molecular weight cut-off of 50 kDa. The binding process was rapid, completed within 22 min, and fit well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The binding equilibrium data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum binding capacity of 0.8733 mmol·g −1 . Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ hindered the Cu(II) removal, while Na + and K + affected it negligibly. Before and after Cu(II) binding, the CSP samples were characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectrometry. The cation exchange with H + and NH 4 + ions and complexation with the carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amine groups could have been the primary mechanisms of Cu(II) binding as forms of Cu 2+ and CuOH + onto the CSP. CSP could be a promising size-enhancing biopolymer for copper removal from aqueous solutions. Graphical abstract

The role of Cu in the thermoelectric transport properties of Mg3Sb2-based materials

Ren Peifeng,Gao Xingchen,Fan Wenhao,Zhang Qiang,Chen Shaoping,Fan Jianfeng

Elemental doping plays a crucial role in optimizing carrier concentration and suppressing lattice thermal conductivity in thermoelectric materials. In this study, Cu atoms were doped in both n- and p-type Mg 3 Sb 2 -based thermoelectric compounds. The results indicate that the incorporation of Cu effectively improves the electrical transport properties of Mg 3 Sb 2 -based thermoelectric compounds while simultaneously suppressing their thermal transport, ultimately achieving enhanced thermoelectric properties: (a) For p-type Mg 3 Sb 2 , a small quantity of Cu atoms provides electrons in the lattice interstitial and thus compensates holes, leading to a decreased carrier concentration and electrical conductivity. However, with increasing Cu content, Cu atoms preferentially occupy Mg2 sites, thereby increasing hole concentration, and thus improving electrical conductivity. Further increasing Cu content, an MgCuSb secondary phase forms, which is unfavorable for overall p-type thermoelectric performance of the Mg 3 Sb 2 -based matrix due to the n-type transport of the MgCuSb compound. (b) For n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 , no such secondary phase was observed despite the same Cu-doping content, which involves a distinct doping mechanism from the p-type one. Consequently, the zT values of p-type Mg 3 Sb 2 materials are improved by 17%–33% over the whole temperature range. And regarding the n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 materials, the highest peak zT value of ~1.4 and average zT avg of ~1.04 are achieved. Therefore, the doping of the Cu element proves to be an effective way in optimizing thermoelectric properties of both p-type and n-type Mg 3 Sb 2 -based materials.

Thermodynamic control of Cu-I nanotopologies enables solar-driven CO2-to-multicarbon conversion

Qixing Zhang,Jing Gao,Muchen Li,Ying Yang,Guanlan Chen,Han He,Xingfei Chen,Xiaobing Gu,Yajun Gao,Yongcai He,Bo He,Xixiang Xu,Zhenguo Li,Ying Zhao,Lijun Zhang,Michael Grätzel,Xiaodan Zhang

Solar-driven electrochemical CO 2 reduction to multicarbon (C 2+ ) products presents a promising avenue for artificial photosynthesis, yet remains constrained by high overpotentials and limited conversion efficiency. Here, we developed an alkaline environment-modulated prereduction strategy that capitalizes on the divergent thermodynamic stabilities of precursors, enabling the precise synthesis of iodine-doped copper nanotopologies (Cu-I NTs). Featuring tunable under-coordination defects and stabilized high-energy adsorption sites, the Cu-I NTs achieve an onset potential of only −0.37 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode for C 2+ formation. Operando Raman measurement and density functional theory calculation reveal that the tailored surface topologies favor Cu-CO rotation adsorption, enabling dynamic reorientation from bridge- to atop-binding configurations, which collectively lowers the barrier for CO-CO coupling. Impressively, powering the electrolyzer by a perovskite/silicon tandem together with a single-junction silicon photovoltaic device, the system delivers a photocurrent of 12.34 mA cm −2 at 2.17 V under standard AM 1.5 illumination, achieving a solar-to-C 2+ conversion efficiency of 8.64%.

Cu@Ni/MoO3 core-shell catalyst for high efficiency methanolysis of hydrazine borane

Yunfeng Lei,Huilin Liu,Shunxiang Wang,Fu Ze Ho,Wen Da Oh,Yong Foo Wong,Yongjin Zou,Yong Shen Chua

Hydrazine borane (N 2 H 4 BH 3 ) has been recognized as an attractive hydrogen storage material owing to its high hydrogen capacity of 15.4 wt%. However, the methanolysis of N 2 H 4 BH 3 remains a challenge, as only BH 3 moiety of N 2 H 4 BH 3 can be utilized to produce H 2 . In the present work, we reported an efficient Cu@Ni/MoO 3 core–shell catalyst that is capable of fully utilizing the H atoms on both BH 3 and N 2 H 4 moieties of N 2 H 4 BH 3 via methanolysis, releasing 5.5 equivalents of gas at 50 °C. This study represents the most efficient catalyst for methanolysis of N 2 H 4 BH 3 reported to date. The improved catalytic activity of Cu@Ni/MoO 3 catalyst may be attributed to the collective improvement on the catalyst, which includes increased specific surface area of the catalyst, formation of an electron deficient Cu@Ni catalyst surface induced by MoO 3 and favorable reacting environment involving KOH as a catalyst promoter. The development of low-cost and highly efficient catalysts may encourage the application of N 2 H 4 BH 3 as a promising hydrogen storage material.

Fe–Cu Alloy Nanozymes with Enhanced Oxidase-Like Activity for Multiplex Antioxidant Detection

Yunying Wang,Yanyan Yu,Ying He,Yun Liu

Single-atom iron catalysts have emerged as promising mimics of oxidases; however, strategies to enhance their intrinsic catalytic activity remain underexplored. Herein, waste pitch and eggshells are utilized for fabricating high-performance nanozymes by coloading nanocopper and iron single atoms onto nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe/Cu@NCNTs). It has been demonstrated that copper nanoparticles serve as a critical modulator, electronically tuning the iron sites, which increases the Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio and promotes the formation of Fe–Cu nanoalloys. These synergistic effects significantly enhance the oxidase-like activity of the catalyst. The optimized Fe/Cu@NCNTs exhibit a 48.7% higher specific activity and superior substrate affinity compared with the Fe@NCNTs counterpart. Leveraging this enhanced catalytic performance, a smartphone-assisted colorimetric sensing platform was developed for the rapid visual detection of multiple analytes. Furthermore, by incorporating a three-channel sensor array (TMB, ABTS, and OPD) with pattern recognition analysis, the platform accurately discriminates between nine antioxidants at concentrations as low as 10 μM. This work not only provides valuable insight into the mechanistic role of copper in enhancing the oxidase-like activity of iron single-atom catalysts but also offers a versatile and high-throughput sensing platform that advances the application of nanozymes in complex sample analysis.

Cu/Zn ratio-programmed tandem electrocatalysis enables highly selective nitrate-to-ammonia conversion

Lulu Zuo,Di Li,Xinwei Li,Zhiyong Tang

The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) represents an attractive and sustainable strategy for simultaneously addressing nitrate contamination and producing value-added ammonia under ambient conditions. Compared with the energy- and carbon-intensive Haber-Bosch process, NO 3 RR offers a decentralized pathway for green ammonia synthesis powered by renewable electricity. However, achieving high ammonia selectivity remains challenging because nitrate-to-ammonia conversion involves a multistep proton-coupled electron transfer cascade, in which the initial two-electron reduction of nitrate to nitrite and the subsequent hydrogenation of nitrite-derived intermediates must proceed in a kinetically coordinated manner. In practice, this cascade is often hindered by reactivity mismatch between the upstream and downstream steps, resulting in nitrite accumulation, incomplete hydrogenation of NO x intermediates, and intensified competition from the hydrogen evolution reaction. Despite the conceptual promise of tandem catalysis, a practical framework for quantifying and optimizing such kinetic matching remains insufficiently developed. Here, we report a layered double hydroxide-derived Cu-Zn dual-site electrocatalyst in which the Cu/Zn ratio is used as a compositional lever to regulate cascade coordination during NO 3 RR in neutral electrolyte. Among the investigated compositions, Cu 1.5 Zn 1.5 Al-R exhibits the optimal balance between nitrate activation and subsequent hydrogenation, delivering a peak Faradaic efficiency of 95% for ammonia at −0.7 V vs. RHE, together with a high ammonia yield of 1526.0 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 . Time-dependent product analysis further shows that this optimal catalyst displays suppressed nitrite accumulation together with rapid ammonia formation, indicating an effective kinetic coupling between the consecutive reduction steps. Mechanistic studies based on online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry and in situ infrared spectroscopy reveal that the reaction mainly proceeds through a *NOH-mediated pathway. The results suggest that Cu-rich motifs are responsible for promoting nitrate adsorption and the initial two-electron reduction step, while Zn-associated motifs regulate the local hydrogenation microenvironment and facilitate the further hydrogenation of nitrite-derived intermediates near adjacent Cu sites. As a result, the Cu/Zn ratio serves as a key compositional parameter to balance the tandem reaction kinetics and improve ammonia selectivity. This work demonstrates that ratio-programmed Cu-Zn tandem catalysis is an effective strategy to enhance nitrate-to-ammonia conversion by kinetically matching the sequential elementary steps. The present study not only provides a viable catalyst design principle for selective NO 3 RR, but also offers useful insight into the regulation of multistep electrocatalytic reactions through compositional engineering.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 through Cu doping and zone melting

Du Xinli,Yu Jian,Ke Shaoqiu,Wei Mingxu,Dong Xiurong,Nie Xiaolei,Zhu Wanting,Wei Ping,Zhang Yu,He Danqi,Liu Mingrui,Hua Lin,Hu Zhili,Zhao Wenyu,Zhang Qingjie

Thermoelectric (TE) materials enable direct thermal-electric energy conversion, but Bi 2 Te 3 -based alloys suffer from limited thermoelectric performance and controversial doping mechanisms of Cu, hindering their practical application in waste heat recovery. To address these issues, this work designs and synthesizes a series of zone-melted p-type Bi 0.5 Sb 1.5*(1− x ) Cu 1.5* x Te 3 +3 wt % Te ( x  = 0.0–2.0%) samples. The results show that Cu occupies interstitial sites, suppresses Te volatilization to increase the hole concentration, and enhances the electrical conductivity. Concurrently, lattice distortions and secondary phases reduced lattice thermal conductivity. The 1.0% Cu-doped sample achieves a maximum power factor of 4.74 mW·m − 1 ·K − 2 at 300 K, a peak zT of 1.03 at 412 K, and an average zT of 0.91 (300–500 K), representing improvements of 7%, 8.4%, and 18% over the undoped matrix. Subsequent hot deformation further reduced lattice thermal conductivity but did not enhance zT due to an anomalous rise in carrier concentration and decreased mobility. This study clarifies the interstitial Cu doping mechanism, providing a viable strategy for optimizing Bi 2 Te 3 -based materials.
