Constructing CoFe alloy and tailoring d-band center in trimetallic ZIF-derived porous carbon for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis

Yanan Ma,Dingyu Zhang,Haimeng Wang,Yuxuan Liang,Yuan Zhang,Fengfeng Yan,Liang Sun,Qian Wang,Wei Li

Synthesis of multiple-site single-atom catalyst (SAC) with metal-containing nanoparticles by using zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF) for improving the bifunctional electrocatalytic performance is of great significance, yet it is also a challenge. Trimetallic ZIF-derived porous carbon nanosheets with the CoFe alloy nanoparticles enclosed in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) are fabricated by utilizing three transition metals as ZIF precursors and sodium chloride as templates via a typical two-step process, including synthesis and pyrolysis. By building CoFe alloy and tailoring d-band center ( E d ) of the Co site, the as-obtained FeCoZn@S-CN ZIF exhibits predominant kinetic activity and durability towards ORR and OER with an extremely low potential gap (Δ E ) value of 0.584    V, exceeding many other efficient counterparts. This study provides an effective approach for designing and synthesizing atomically dispersed multi-metal site catalysts with alloyed nanoparticles to achieve high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in the application of the recharged zinc-air battery (ZAB).

Oxidized carbon fiber supported vertical WS2 nanosheets arrays as efficient 3 D nanostructure electrocatalyts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Xiao Shang,Kai-Li Yan,Zi-Zhang Liu,Shan-Shan Lu,Bin Dong,Jing-Qi Chi,Xiao Li,Yan-Ru Liu,Yong-Ming Chai,Chen-Guang Liu

Oxidized carbon fiber (oCF) as support successfully realizes the vertical growth of uniform WS 2 nanosheets arrays for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via a facile hydrothermal process. Thanks to oxygen functional groups on oCF, vertical WS 2 nanosheets structures have grown more easily on oCF, which can provide better dispersion, short charge transfer distance and more exposed active sites for HER in comparison with bulk WS 2 and WS 2 nanosheets on bare carbon fiber (CF) fabricated at the same condition. The electrochemical measurements confirmed that WS 2 /oCF possesses better HER activity than bulk WS 2 and WS 2 /CF. Especially, the 10-h stability with unchanged vertical WS 2 nanosheets morphology further demonstrate the positive effect of oxygen functional groups on the enhanced vertical structure and close combination between WS 2 and oCF. It may offer a facile way to realize more exposed active sites from stable electrocatalyst hybrids of transition metal sulfides by surface oxidization of carbon supports.

3 D Ordered Macroporous Alumina–Carbon Nanocomposite Supported Platinum Nanoparticles as Effective and Reusable Catalysts for Asymmetric Hydrogenation

Ting Yang,Lan-Lan Lou,Wenjun Yu,Yajun Feng,Hao Li,Kai Yu,Shuangxi Liu

Graphical Porous but extraordinarily durable : 3 D ordered macroporous alumina–carbon composite supported Pt nanocatalysts are applied in the asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate. They exhibit high catalytic activity and extraordinary durability. The three-dimensionally ordered macroporous alumina-carbon composite materials were firstly prepared through a surfactant-assisted colloidal crystal template method and applied to support Pt nanoparticles. The results of SEM, XRD, TEM, and N 2 sorption analyses revealed that these composite materials possessed highly ordered macroporous structures with meso- and micropores within the skeletons of macropores and that the Pt nanoparticles were well dispersed on these materials with a very narrow size distribution. These prepared Pt nanocatalysts were evaluated in the asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl pyruvate after chiral modification with cinchonidine. Excellent catalytic activity and enantioselectivity were achieved. More importantly, these catalysts exhibited extraordinary stability and reusability during the reaction and could be reused at least 26 times without significant loss in catalytic activity and enantioselectivity.

Enhancing mechanical stability and uniformity of 2-D continuous ZIF-8 membranes by Zn(II)-doped polydopamine modification

Xuehua Ruan,Xinfang Zhang,Xuhang Liao,Xiaobin Jiang,Yan Dai,Xiaoming Yan,Gaohong He

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with regular pore size (~ 0.34   nm) is widely attempted for gas separation membranes based on size sieving. However, the prospect is subjected to fabricating the continuous ZIF-8 membranes with high mechanical stability and uniformity. In response, an adhesive layer of Zn(II)-doped polydopamine (Zn-PDA) is pre-coated on the stainless steel nets in this work to improve ZIF-8 nucleation and growth. Zn-PDA layer shows high tolerance to ultrasonic agitation and heated methanol (system for ZIF-8 synthesis), little dissolution within 24   h, which supplies a high stable surface for ZIF-8 growth. Furthermore, the Zn(II) doped in PDA layer is opportunely serving as the even-distributed ZIF-8 nucleation starting sites, verified with the EDX and FE-SEM images for the aggregated Zn(II) clusters and the nascent ZIF-8 crystals. Therefore, an indented and hinged boundary is constructed between ZIF-8 and substrate to enhance the mechanical stability. The FE-SEM images after ultrasonic agitation show that the continuous ZIF-8 membranes prepared on Zn-PDA layers can tolerate the deformation to a certain extent. Finally, the prepared ZIF-8 membranes behave excellently with α H2/CO2 = 9.9, α H2/CO = 17.2, α H2/CH4 = 26.0, and permeation rate J H2 = 3980 GPU. This work supplied a useful approach to enhance mechanical stability and uniformity of defect-free ZIF-8 membranes.

Surface-anchored poly(acryloyl-L(D)-valine) with enhanced chirality-selective effect on cellular uptake of gold nanoparticles

Deng Jun,Wu Sai,Yao Mengyun,Gao Changyou

Chirality is one of the ubiquitous phenomena in biological systems. The left handed (L-) amino acids and right handed (D-) sugars are normally found in proteins and in RNAs and DNAs, respectively. The effect of chiral surfaces at the nanoscale on cellular uptake has, however, not been explored. This study reveals for the first time the molecular chirality on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functions as a direct regulator for cellular uptake. Monolayers of 2-mercaptoacetyl-L(D)-valine (L(D)-MAV) and poly(acryloyl-L(D)-valine (L(D)-PAV) chiral molecules were formed on AuNPs surface, respectively. The internalized amount of PAV-AuNPs was several times larger than that of MAV-AuNPs by A549 and HepG2 cells, regardless of the chirality difference. However, the D-PAV-AuNPs were internalized with significantly larger amount than the L-PAV-AuNPs. This chirality-dependent uptake effect is likely attributed to the preferable interaction between the L-phospholipid-based cell membrane and the D-enantiomers.

A spherical N-methyl-d-glucamine-based hybrid adsorbent for highly efficient adsorption of boric acid from water

Xi Zhang,Jiawei Wang,Shaofeng Chen,Zongbi Bao,Huabin Xing,Zhiguo Zhang,Baogen Su,Qiwei Yang,Yiwen Yang,Qilong Ren

Preparation of a novel hybrid boron-selective adsorbent with N- methyl- d -glucamine functional groups was reported. The adsorbent was synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization method based on chemistry of sol-gel reaction. The structure and morphology of the hybrid adsorbent were characterized by MS, FTIR, XPS, BET analysis and PXRD , etc. The perfectly spherical hybrid adsorbent exhibits exceptionally efficient adsorption of boric acid from the aqueous solution. The boron adsorption behavior on the adsorbent was investigated by varying the dosages of the adsorbent, pH, and competitive ions. The adsorption isotherm was in better accordance with the Langmuir model, exhibiting a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 2.02   mmol/g. The adsorption capacity peaks at pH   ∼   9 due to the vast formation of stable tetrahedral structure between dominant B(OH) 4 − and the adsorbent. The presence of Na + ions has slight effect on boron adsorption while Mg 2+ cations significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity because of the simultaneous adsorption attributed by Mg(OH) 2 .

Synthesis, characterization, and degradation behaviors of poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) modified by maleic anhydride and ethanediamine

Jiale Cui,Zhihua Zhou,Yun Yang,Wenjuan Liu,Yunfei Zhao,Cheng Peng,Tianlong Huang,Hu Zhou,Lihua Liu,Qiao Zhang

In order to improve hydrophilicity and settle the acidity in hydrolysis, a novel ethanediamine (EDA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) modified poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymer (EMPLGA) was synthesized. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1HNMR), titration and the water contact angles were employed to characterize the synthesized polymer. The effects of various polymerization conditions on weight average molecular mass (Mw), polydispersity index (PDI) and anhydride content of MPLGA were investigated. The degradation behaviors of PLGA, MPLA and EMPLGA were also studied by observation of the changes of the pH value of incubation medium, molecular weight and weight loss ratio for a time interval of 25 days in-vitro, respectively. The results showed that MPLGA with high anhydride content was successfully obtained by directly ring-opening polymerization and ethanediamine was further grafted onto MPLGA, and there is almost unchanged in Mw between MPLGA and EMPLGA polymers. The introduction of anhydride and amino groups improved the hydrophilicity of PLGA. A uniform degradation of EMPLGA was observed in comparison with an acidity-induced auto-accelerating degradation featured by PLGA and MPLGA. The results revealed that the introduction of ethanediamine into PLGA has weakened or neutralized the acidity of PLGA degradation products.

Graphene nanodots encaged 3-D gold substrate as enzyme loading platform for the fabrication of high performance biosensors

Jianmei Wang,Huihui Zhu,Yuanhong Xu,Wenrong Yang,Ao Liu,Fukai Shan,Mengmei Cao,Jingquan Liu

Herein, a uniform three-dimensional (3-D) graphene nanodots-encaged porous gold electrode was prepared via ion beam sputtering deposition (IBSD) and mild corrosion chemistry for efficient enzyme electrode fabrication. Enzymes, like glucose oxidase and catalase , were modified with pyrene functionalities and then loaded into the graphene nanodots encaged porous gold electrode via non-covalent π–π stacking interaction between pyrene and graphene. The fabricated enzyme electrodes showed profound reusability and repeatability, high sensitivity, inherent selectivity and enhanced detection range. As for glucose analysis a broad linear range from 0.05 to 100   mM was obtained and the linear range for hydrogen peroxide was 0.005 to 4   mM. Detection limits of 30   μM for glucose and 1   μM for hydrogen peroxide were achieved ( S / N   =   3), respectively. These electrodes can be applied to analyze the clinical samples with reliable results. The formation mechanism and 3-D structure of the porous electrode were investigated using high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Most importantly, various other ideal biosensors can be fabricated using the same porous electrode and the same enzyme modification methodology.

Study on poly(D,L-lactic) microspheres embedded in calcium alginate hydrogel beads as dual drug delivery systems

Dagen Zhong,Zonghua Liu,Shasha Xie,Wei Zhang,Yuanming Zhang,Wei Xue

This work is to develop a novel dual drug delivery system that can simultaneously load and release 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA, a hydrophobic drug) and bovine serum albumin (BSA, hydrophilic model drug) in a single formulation. The system consists of poly( D,L -lactic) (PDLLA) microspheres embedded in calcium alginate hydrogel beads. The GA-loaded microspheres were first prepared and then dispersed in the aqueous solution of sodium alginate and BSA. The resulting suspension was dropped into aqueous calcium chloride solution to obtain the dual drug delivery system. The morphology of the microspheres and beads, the drug content and loading efficiency, the interaction between GA and PDLLA, and the drug release behaviors were studied. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed that the PDLLA microspheres were homogeneously distributed in the beads. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement suggested certain interaction between GA and PDLLA, and the crystal structure of GA was influenced by the polymer. The dual release in vitro showed a rapid BSA release but a sustained GA release in all the systems. Furthermore, the release rate of BSA was accelerated by increasing PDLLA/alginate ratio, while the release rate of GA was decreased, and the release of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs could be adjusted by changing the ratio of PDLLA/alginate. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A fluorescence detection of d-penicillamine based on Cu2+-induced fluorescence quenching system of protein-stabilized gold nanoclusters

Peng Wang,Bang Lin Li,Nian Bing Li,Hong Qun Luo

In this contribution, a luminescent gold nanoclusters which were synthesized by bovine serum albumin as novel fluorescent probes were successfully utilized for the determination of d -penicillamine for the first time. Cupric ion was employed to quench the strong fluorescence of the gold nanoclusters, whereas the addition of d -penicillamine caused obvious restoration of fluorescence intensity of the Cu 2+ -gold nanoclusters system. Under optimum conditions, the increment in fluorescence intensity of Cu 2+ -gold nanoclusters system caused by d -penicillamine was linearly proportional to the concentration of d -penicillamine in the range of 2.0   ×   10 −5 –2.39   ×   10 −4   M. The detection limit for d -penicillamine was 5.4   ×   10 −6   M. With the off–on fluorescence signal at 650   nm approaching the near-infrared region, the present sensor for d -penicillamine detection had high sensitivity and low spectral interference. Furthermore, the novel gold nanoclusters-based fluorescent sensor has been applied to the determination of d -penicillamine in real biological samples with satisfactory results.

Single chain morphology and nanofiber-like aggregates of branched β-(1→3)-d-glucan in water/dimethylsulfoxide solution

Cong Chen,Yan Meng,Sheng Li,Wenhua Wu,Chuanjun Liu,Xiaojuan Xu,Lina Zhang

A polysaccharide coded as PR-CA was extracted from Polyporus rhinoceros and determined to be a β-(1→3)- d -glucan with multiple branches. The weight-average molecular weights ( M w ) of PR-CA in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and in water were determined with static light scattering (SLS) to be 3.57   ×   10 5 and 1.79   ×   10 7 , indicating existence of the single chains in DMSO and co-existence of single chains and aggregates in water. Moreover, the stiffness of single chains of PR-CA in water was directly visualized by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hollow structure of PR-CA nanofibers with width of 30–40   nm and length of ∼350   nm formed in the water/DMSO (9:1, v:v) was demonstrated by a fluorescent probe tetraphenylethylene (TPE) via aggregation-induced emission (AIE). The formation of PR-CA nanofibers was ascribed to the parallel aggregation of the extended PR-CA chains due to the hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. This work offered valuable results for promising applications of natural branched β-glucans in the biological fields of drug inclusion, delivery and disease diagnosis.

Polyethersulfone membranes modified with D-tyrosine for biofouling mitigation: Synergistic effect of surface hydrophility and anti-microbial properties

Bei-Bei Jiang,Xue-Fei Sun,Lin Wang,Si-Yu Wang,Ru-Dong Liu,Shu-Guang Wang

Biofouling is a critical issue in membrane separations . Development of novel approaches for biofouling mitigation is of crucial importance for membrane-based technologies . In this research, D-tyrosine was immobilized on a polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane (UF) to mitigate biofouling with the synergistic effects of surface hydrophilicity and anti-microbial properties. Results showed that the grafting of D-tyrosine increased the surface hydrophilicity and imparted a smoother surface to the membrane without altering its transport properties. During bovine serum albumen (BSA) filtration tests, the unified membrane fouling index (UMFI) of D-tyrosine-polydopamine (PDA)/PES membrane was only 0.00162, probably half of the PDA/PES membrane’s UMFI without D-tyrosine. The flux recovery ratio (FRR) of the D-tyrosine-PDA/PES membrane was up to 79%, higher than the virgin PES membrane. Moreover, the D-tyrosine-PDA/PES membrane showed better anti-biofouling performance when inoculated with E. coli culture. The proposed membrane surface modification technique paves the way toward realization of biological control for mitigating biofouling by simultaneously enhancing the anti-adhesive and antimicrobial properties of the membrane.
