Substituent Effect on the Fe(IV) Corrole Catalyzed Baeyer–Villiger Oxidation Reaction

An Li-Da,Li Feng,Qiu Yi-Feng,Liang Guo-Chao,Zhang Hao,Liu Hai Yang

Comprehending how substituent effect influences catalytic performance is essential for advancing efficient catalysts and unraveling reaction mechanisms. Examining the substituent effects of metal corrole catalyzed Baeyer–Villiger (B–V) oxidation reaction remains limited. In this work, four iron tri-aryl corrole complexes with distinct electronic structures, iron(IV) 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl) corrole [Fe IV (TPFC)Cl] ( 1 a), iron(IV) 5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-10-phenyl corrole [Fe IV (BPFPC)Cl] ( 2 a), iron(IV) 5,15-bis(phenyl)-10-pentafluorophenyl corrole [Fe IV (BPPFC)Cl] ( 3 a) and iron(IV) 5,10,15-tris(phenyl) corrole [Fe IV (TPC)Cl] ( 4 a) have been prepared. The impact of electron-withdrawing meso-substituents on their catalytic performance in B-V oxidation reaction was then investigated. The results reveal that an increased number of pentafluorophenyl substituents, which enhance the electron-withdrawing effect, correlates with superior catalytic activity. The catalytic activity follows an order 1 a >  2 a >  3 a >  4 a. The plausible mechanism to explain the observed catalytic behavior was also discussed. Graphical

A Multifunctional Fe-Based Metal–Organic Framework With Ferroptosis for Synergistic Therapy

Lu Hong,Qiaoyu Chen,Lei Rao,Zhen Wang,Bing Wang,Qing He,Wenxin Lin

Generally, single cancer treatment is insufficient to achieve ideal therapeutic effect. Multimodal therapy has the potential to overcome efficacy challenges and reveals great promise in enhancing therapeutic effect. Herein, a combination treatment system (DOX@Fe-PBC) based on chemotherapy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), and ferroptosis was constructed by loading anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) into Fe-based metal–organic framework (Fe-PBC). In simulated tumor microenvironment, the system released anticancer drug DOX to be a DNA intercalator and topoisomerase II inhibitor to realize chemotherapy (CT) and iron ions were delivered to induce Fenton reaction, which boost the generation of •OH, resulting in the enhancement of the effect of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meantime, the system could consume glutathione (GSH) to reduce the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4); then, lipid peroxides (LPO) were accumulated to realize ferroptosis. DOX@Fe-PBC provided an effective strategy of chemotherapy, CDT, and ferroptosis to realize ideal cancer treatment.

Oxygen Bridge Governs OER via Deep Self-Reconstruction in Fe–Co Oxyhydroxides

Mingyu Liu,Bowen Pei,Hongyu Ba,Wei Ni,Huaheng Zhao,Shuang Chen,Jiamin Zhao,Jinsheng Zhao

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting involves complex multi-electron–proton transfer processes and represents the rate-determining step limiting overall electrolysis efficiency. Developing non-noble-metal catalysts with high activity and stability is therefore essential. Herein, a heterogeneous synthesis strategy was employed to in situ construct an iron-rich layered sulfate precursor (Fe0.42Co0.58-SO4/NF) on nickel foam, which underwent deep self-reconstruction in alkaline electrolyte to form nanoflower-like Fe0.42Co0.58OOH/NF. The optimized catalyst maintained its iron-rich composition and hierarchical structure, delivering outstanding OER performance with an overpotential of 220 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, a Tafel slope of 31.9 mV·dec−1, and stability exceeding 12 h at 600 mA·cm−2. Synchrotron analyses revealed dynamic transitions between mono-μ-O and di-μ-O Fe–M (M = Fe, Co) oxygen bridges during reconstruction, which enhanced both structural robustness and active-site density. The Fe-rich environment promoted the formation of Fe3+–O–Fe3+units that synergized with Co4+species to activate the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), thereby accelerating OER kinetics. This work elucidates the key role of oxygen-bridge geometry in optimizing catalytic activity and durability, providing valuable insights into the rational design of Fe–Co-based non-noble-metal catalysts with high iron content for efficient water oxidation.

The effect of Fe substitution on the magnetic behaviors of HoCrO3 nanofibers

Quanli Hu,Hanqiong Luo,Chao Song,Yin Wang,Jinghai Liu

HoCrO 3 displays fascinating magnetic characteristics. Owing to the co-presence of Ho 3+ and Cr 3+ ions, complex magnetic interactions are exhibited. A facile electrospinning as well as annealing way was utilized to make Fe-substituted HoCrO 3 nanofibers, which were HoCr 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , HoCr 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 3 , and HoCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 . The perovskite orthorhombic structures of HoCrO 3 , HoCr 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , HoCr 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 3 , and HoCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 were revealed by Rietveld refined XRD patterns. With the Fe substitution, the magnetic behaviors of HoCr 0.9 Fe 0.1 O 3 , HoCr 0.7 Fe 0.3 O 3 , and HoCr 0.5 Fe 0.5 O 3 NFs changed from canted antiferromagnetic at low temperature to paramagnetic at high temperature because of the combination of three kinds of magnetic contributions, namely Cr 3+ , Ho 3+ , and Fe 3+ . Fe substitution also enhanced the Cr 3+ ordering temperature from 139 to 161 K. This study should stimulate the development of holmium chromite nanomaterials for data storage devices and sensors.

Fe–N–C Support-Enhanced Pt Catalyst for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction

Xinquan Wu,Zhen Sun,Hao Li,Xiaolei Guo,Zhen-Feng Huang,Ruijie Gao,Chengxiang Shi,Xiangwen Zhang,Lun Pan,Ji-Jun Zou

Platinum-based catalysts are highly effective for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but their prohibitive cost and insufficient activity impede large-scale commercialization. Herein, we report a Pt@Fe-NC electrocatalyst synthesized by depositing uniform platinum nanoparticles onto an iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–NC) support via an ethylene glycol reduction method. The Fe–NC support, prepared from an iron (II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex precursor to ensure high iron utilization, modulates the electronic structure of the Pt nanoparticles, thereby enhancing both catalytic activity and stability. The optimized Pt@Fe-NC catalyst (13.54 wt% Pt) exhibits exceptional ORR performance in acidic media, with a half-wave potential of 0.852 V and notable stability. When integrated into a zinc-air battery, the catalyst delivered a high specific capacity of 652.66 mAh g Zn −1 . Furthermore, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) employing this catalyst achieved a high open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 0.964 V and a peak power density of 1.722 W cm −2 , outperforming most previously reported Pt-based catalysts. This study highlights a synergistic strategy between Pt nanoparticles and metal-nitrogen-carbon (M–N–C) supports to boost ORR performance, presenting a viable path toward advanced, cost-effective catalysts for energy conversion devices like PEMFCs and zinc-air batteries. Graphical A method of preparing Fe–NC loaded Pt nanoparticle catalysts is presented. The method is used to prepare Fe–NC substrate by loading iron complexes with 1,10-phenanthroline on carbon black and then Pt nanoparticles obtained by ethylene glycol reduction method are loaded on the Fe–NC substrate. The results show that the enhanced activity of the Pt@Fe-NC catalyst is due to the modification of the electronic structure of Fe on Pt in the Fe-NC support.

Fe (III)@TA@IGF-2 microspheres loaded hydrogel for liver injury treatment

Jie Chen,Xicheng Wang,Hua Ye,Zhenyan Yu,Longbao Feng,Jing Zhou,Yajin Che

As one of the most commonly used materials in liver tissue engineering, hydrogel has received much attention in recent years. In this work, we prepared a gelatin methacrylate (GelMA)/oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA)/galactosylated chitosan (Gal-CS)/Fe (III)@ [email protected] 200 (TA200) hydrogel loaded with insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF-2) for regeneration of damaged hepatocytes. Fe (III)@TA microspheres served as carrier to achieve sustained release of IGF-2 to promote hepatocytes regeneration. Galactose ligands could bind to the asialoglycoprotein receptor (ASGPR) on the surface of hepatocytes. Galactosylated chitosan could significantly increase the specific function of hepatocytes. The hydrogel we prepared had a storage modulus of 1100 Pa and was suitable for migration of hepatocytes. The release ratio of IGF-2 could reach up to 90% within 14 days. For carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) induced human hepatic stellate cell line LX2 damage, GelMA/OHA/Gal-CS/TA200 hydrogel could significantly improve the survival of LX2 cells. The expression of HNF-4α and transferrin was detected in LX2 cells treated with hydrogel, indicating that the specific function of the liver was also restored. In summary, the GelMA/OHA/Gal-CS/TA200 hydrogels could be used as new tissue engineering scaffolds for the construction of artificial livers.

Ce-Fe-MI/CA composite catalyst for catalytic ozonation: Synergistic adsorption-activation via Ce/Fe sites & oxygen vacancies and application in air flotation-catalytic ozonation coupling process for pharmaceutical wastewater

Lin Yue,Shiqi Xing,Xiaoyun Han,Wang Liang,Yanfang Liu,Xinyang Liang,Yonghui Han

In this paper, a Bimetallic MOF material Ce-Fe-MI was doped in cellulose acetate (CA) to form a composite catalyst Ce-Fe-MI/CA for catalytic ozonation degradation of tetracycline (TC) wastewater. When the mass ratio of Ce-Fe-MI to CA is 0.45:1, the removal rate of Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD) reaches 95.04% in 90 min. The Ce-Fe-MI/CA catalyst exhibits high stability, with only a 4.61% decrease in the removal of COD after four cycles of use. The active components such as •OH and 1 O 2 are produced during the Ce-Fe-MI/CA catalyzed ozonation process. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations demonstrate distinct roles of metallic sites: Ce sites dominate TC adsorption, whereas Fe sites activate catalytic ozonation. The electron transfer between Ce and Fe can effectively regulate the surface valence state and rapidly activate surface adsorbed reactants. Furthermore, the presence of oxygen vacancies in the Ce-Fe-MI/CA framework significantly enhances the catalytic performance. The air flotation-catalytic ozonation coupling process is applied to the treatment of actual pharmaceutical wastewater. The coupled system runs continuously for 480 min, and the effluent COD kept below 50 mg·L −1 .

Electrochemical sensor based on N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD nanomaterials: Application to simultaneous selective determination of Fe(Ⅱ) and Fe(Ⅲ) irons released from iron supplement in simulated gastric fluid

Xuemei Ma,Jiayi Yu,Lin Wei,Qian Zhao,Liyong Ren,Zhiyong Hu

Simultaneous selective determination of Fe (Ⅱ) and Fe (Ⅲ) is of great significance to the study of iron ion tracking and release of iron supplement in gastric fluid. In this paper, a composite material (N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD) was prepared by a one-pot method. The various characterizations confirmed the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) grew in situ on the surface of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs), and the β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and AgNPs linked together by Ag–O bonds finally presented gourd-like nanoparticles on the surface of N-CQDs. Then, N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to detect Fe(II) and Fe(III) simultaneously. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results confirmed that N-CQDs/AgNPs/β-CD enhanced electrode performances because of the synergistic effect between N-CQDs, AgNPs and β-CD. The sensor was successfully applied for the determination by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) of Fe(II) and Fe(III) released from four iron supplementations in simulated gastric fluid (SGF).

Effects of surfactant and ionic concentration on properties of dual physical crosslinking self-healing hydrogels by hydrophobic association and ionic interactions

Yayu Li,Tianyang Zhou,Zhangyong Yu,Fei Wang,Dongjian Shi,Zhongbin Ni,Mingqing Chen

Dual crosslinking network hydrogels fabricated by non-covalent interactions can have both excellent mechanical properties and tolerable self-healing performances. Although a range of hydrogels that are constructed by hydrophobic association-interaction (HAI) or/and Fe(III) ionic interactions have been reported, as far as we know, there has been little progress in the case of influence due to surfactant types and Fe(III) contents on the mechanical and self-healing properties. In this study, two kinds of dual crosslinking hydrogels based on acrylic acid (AA) and stearyl methacrylate (SMA) were fabricated by using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as physical crosslinking points, respectively, in which PAA was used as the hydrophilic part and PSMA as the hydrophobic part, and the ionic interaction of Fe(III) (Fe3+) ions combined carboxylic groups (–COO−) of PAA as the second crosslinking point. Mechanical properties, self-healing and self-recovery performances of the prepared hydrogels and their influencing factors were investigated. The mechanical properties of the two hydrogels increased with higher Fe3+ contents and reached a maximum at 0.3 mol% of Fe3+, while they increased gradually with the AA contents. The hydrogels showed self-healing properties with recoverable mechanical values after healing for 24 h. Moreover, the hydrogels also showed around 90% of self-recovery properties. The hydrogels formed by using PVA as a surfactant (HPAA-Fe3+@PVA) showed higher mechanical properties, but lower self-healing and self-recovery efficiencies, compared with those of the SDS-associated hydrogels (HPAA-Fe3+@SDS), because the PVA macromolecules with longer chains increased the chain entanglement. These results indicate that the mechanical properties, self-healing and self-recovery performances can be regulated by changing the surfactant types and compositions of the AA and Fe3+ of the hydrogels.

Improved sulfamethoxazole degradation by the addition of MoS2 into the Fe2+/peroxymonosulfate process

Songlin Wang,Wenxin Xu,Junfeng Wu,Qing Gong,Pengchao Xie

The low efficiency of transforming ferric ion (Fe 3+ ) to ferrous ion (Fe 2+ ) always challenges the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by (Fe 2+ ) processes in the degradation of micro-organic contaminants. In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) which accelerated PMS activation and the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ cycle through the reaction of Mo 4+ and Fe 3+ was employed to significantly improve the efficiency of Fe 2+ /PMS on sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. Through the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments, both sulfate and hydroxyl radicals have been proven to account for SMX degradation in the MoS 2 /Fe 2+ /PMS process. The optimal pH of 3 has been determined for SMX degradation in the process, and an equation to express the relationship between the rate of SMX degradation and the dosages of Fe 2+ , MoS 2 and PMS was simulated. Chloride ion and humic acid had positive and negative effects on the process, respectively, whereas nitrate and bicarbonate had no influences on SMX degradation. Through the identified intermediates by LC/MS, a transformation pathway of SMX in the MoS 2 /Fe 2+ /PMS process was proposed. Additionally, the good efficiency of SMX degradation (>80%) in real water matrices and good stability of MoS 2 after reuse for 6 times further suggest that the MoS 2 /Fe 2+ /PMS process can be effectively used to degrade SMX.

Oxygenic iron clusters in ZSM-5 zeolite promote quantum sieving of gaseous hydrogen isotopes

Zhang Jingjing,Deng Yongyan,Gai Dongxu,Shi Yang,Feng Xingwen,Li Peilong,An Yongtao,Zou Xiaoqin

Isotopic separation is of paramount importance for producing high-purity heavy hydrogen, yet the process remains hugely challenging. Here, we report on an Fe/ZSM-5 zeolite that was able to efficiently separate deuterium from protium via chemical quantum sieving. Structural data showed that four types of Fe species were present in Fe/ZSM-5 and oligomeric Fe–O clusters in the zeolite pores were correlated directly with gas selectivity. Gas adsorption revealed that Fe–O species served as the main adsorption sites and interacted with D 2 more strongly than with H 2 . D 2 /H 2 separation was exemplified using thermal desorption spectroscopy. D 2 /H 2 selectivity increased with Fe loading in Fe/ZSM-5 and a selectivity of 32.1 was obtained with an optimal loading of 7 wt%. The shift of desorption temperature supports the chemical affinity-based quantum sieving of D 2 over H 2 . This study demonstrates an effective strategy for enhancing D 2 /H 2 separation and the high selectivity means that Fe/ZSM-5 has strong potential in hydrogen isotope separation.

MOF-Derived Hollow Spheres of MIL-100(Fe)-NH2(20) with Well-Developed Hierarchical Mesoporous and Uniform Distribution of Fe and N Active Phases for the Photocatalytic Removal of Organic Dyes

Suyun Wang,Yuanbo Fang,Wuli Han,Qiang Li,Xiao Luo

For the first time, MIL-100(Fe)-derived microspheres with a hollow structure were perfectly constructed and used as a photocatalyst to decompose organic dyes under visible light irradiation. The prepared MIL-100(Fe)-NH2(20) could boost the separation, migration, and transfer of photoinduced carriers effectively, together with efficient photocatalytic performance. In simulated sunlight, the MIL-100(Fe)-NH2(20) exhibits the best degradation efficiency as well as excellent reusability and stability, and the degradation rate for rhodamine B (RhB) can be more than 99.5% within 80 minutes. Structural analysis proves that the porous MIL-100(Fe)-NH2(20) catalyst reaps an amazing hollow structure, large specific surface areas (2784.9 m2·g–1), and uniform distribution of Fe and N active phases. Besides, the enhanced visible light response and lower recombination rate of e––h+ pairs are both confirmed, and the band gap is significantly reduced to 2.53 eV. Finally, the photocatalytic mechanism and the possible degradation pathway were suggested. Owing to the enhanced photocatalytic activity, good tolerance to pH and water quality, and excellent stability, the MIL-100(Fe)-NH2(20) catalyst can be potentially used in a wide range of dye wastewater purifications.
