The porous organic polymers have been considered as effective materials for gas storage and adsorption. Herein, we synthesized highly crystalline nitrogen-rich covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) by polycondensation for preparing the novel hyper-cross-linked conjugated polymers (HCCPs) with tunable specific surface area and pore volume through coupling Friedel-Crafts reaction, in which 1,4-Bis(chloromethyl)benzene and 4,4-Bis(chloromethyl)biphenyl as the expansion molecules were pillared between the layers of CTF-HUST. This technology not only increased the specific surface area and total pore volume of CTF-HUST by 2.56 and 4.68 times, but also greatly enhanced the utilization of adsorption sites of CTF-HUST. The HCCP2–1.25 exhibited the highest surface area (1349.29 m 2 g −1 ) among these HCCPs and demonstrated excellent adsorption performance for ethyl acetate (1605.14 mg/g), ethanol (1371.49 mg/g), 1,2-Dichloroethane (1971.68 mg/g), benzene (1151.77 mg/g) and toluene (1024.28 mg/g) due to the multiple C-H…O, C-H…Cl, O-H…N and C-H…π interactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and HCCPs framework. Moreover, CO 2 and H 2 storage capacities of the HCCP2–1.25 were 8.02 wt% and 1.54 wt%, 1.66 and 1.67 times higher than CTF-HUST, respectively. This study developed a simple and effective molecular expansion strategy to synthesize a series of novel high-surface-area porous polymers for potential applications in the environmental field.

Nanofiltration (NF) shows great application potentials in selectively recovering lithium (Li) from natural brine to meet the rapidly growing demands in lithium-ion batteries. However, it remains challenges in how to fabricate positively-charged NF membranes via a convenient method since conventional polyamide-based NF membranes are negatively-charged, which exhibit undesirable Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity according to the Donnan and electrostatic effects. Herein, we report a new kind of interfacial polymerization (IP) for preparing positively-charged NF membranes at the gas/liquid (GL) interface by replacing the amine solution with amine gas. Compared with the traditional liquid/liquid interfacial polymerization (LLIP), the amine monomers are always more abundant than the acyl chloride monomers during the GLIP process. Therefore, enough amino groups are desirably remained, resulting in positively-charged polyamide-based layers. In addition, the surface charges as well as the average pore sizes of the polyamide-based layers can be facilely adjusted by the reaction time due to the slow reaction kinetics in the GLIP process. The as-prepared NF membranes show a relatively high rejection for MgCl 2 of 98.5% and low rejection for LiCl of 22.6%, demonstrating their excellent Mg 2+ /Li + selectivity. Moreover, the NF membranes can also maintain the high Mg 2+ /Li + separation factors as high as 28 during a long-term operation.

NO 2 is one of the recognized six major pollutants worldwide. Its monitoring and forewarning are indispensable for human health. Thus, a practical sensor with rapid response and high sensitivity would endow us with an effective acknowledgment of NO 2 distribution. In this work, the gold-loaded tellurium (Au@Te) nanobelts are synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal process. According to various characterization, including X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscope , transmission electron microscopy , the formation of tellurium nanobelts with a typical thickness of 18 nm and flower-like gold nanoparticles with a diameter of 50–200 nm is confirmed. Based on these, the Au@Te sensor exhibits appealing sensing properties in a comprehensive measurement considering the practical application scenarios, including a sensitivity of 0.028 ppb -1 (0–50 ppb), a limit of detection with ppt-level (~83 ppt), rapid response (11.3 s towards 5 ppm), good repeatability and selectivity. Meanwhile, the long-term stability is measured under continuous charging in accordance with actual application scenarios. A stable response along 28 days is observed. This work provides an efficient strategy for the fabrication of NO 2 sensors, together with a case for gas sensor evaluation towards specified application scenarios.

Hierarchical multi-metal oxide-based gas sensors with high surface area and abundant active sites have attracted intensely research interests for their highly sensitive and fast gas detection performance. Developing synthetic strategies for obtaining novel hierarchical metal oxides with high sensing performance remains eminently challenging. Herein, hierarchial hollow GaFeO 3 microcubes were successfully prepared via a Ga 3+ -modified Fe-based Prussian Blue (PB) mediated template conversion strategy. The microsized morphologies and hollow interior structures of GaFeO 3 microcubes can be feasibly modulated by controlling the thermolysis temperatures. The ultrasmall nanoparticle-assembly of GaFeO 3 architecture obtained at 500 °C exhibited an optimum response value (R a /R g ) of 7.4, and rapid response/recovery times (9 s/49 s) toward 200 ppm triethylamine (TEA) at a working temperature of 200 °C, as well as remarkable selectivity and excellent long-term stability (for at least 31 days), which are intrinsically beneficial from the unique interior loose structure with good permeability for diffusion of target gases. This work provides a promising approach for synthesizing various hierarchical multimetal oxides with intriguing nanoparticle-assembled hollow structure and broad prospects for practical gas sensing applications.

Cascade catalysis of reverse water gas shift (RWGS) and well-established CO hydrogenation holds promise for the conversion of greenhouse gas CO2 and renewable H2 into liquid hydrocarbons and methanol under mild conditions. However, it remains a big challenge to develop low-temperature RWGS catalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability. Here, we report the design of an efficient RWGS catalyst by encapsulating ruthenium clusters with the size of 1 nm inside hollow silica shells. The spatially confined structure prevents the sintering of Ru clusters while the permeable silica layer allows the diffusion of gaseous reactants and products. This catalyst with reduced particle sizes not only inherits the excellent activity of Ru in CO2 hydrogenation reactions but also exhibits nearly 100% CO selectivity and superior stability at 200–500 °C. The ability to selectively produce CO from CO2 at relatively low temperatures paves the way for the production of value-added fuels from CO2 and renewable H2.

Gas sensor constructed with metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) has attracted a growing concern owing to its feasibility for rapid detection of various harmful and pollutant gases . However, the sensors made of pure MOS usually suffer from the drawbacks of high working temperature, low sensitivity and poor selectivity. Herein, we propose a Co-doping strategy to upgrade the gas sensing performance of In 2 O 3 . To expound it, Co-doped In 2 O 3 porous nanospheres (Co-In 2 O 3 PNSs) with the diameter of ∼120 nm was prepared from home-made In(OH) 3 NSs via a soaking-lyophilization-calcination method and their sensitive performance towards several volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was investigated in detail. Compared to pure In 2 O 3 sensor, the best Co-In 2 O 3 sensor (with optimized 0.5 mol% Co) exhibited outstanding improvements in triethylamine (TEA) sensing performance, especially including lower optimal working temperature (OWT: 220 °C vs 320 °C), higher response (R a /R g : 3500 vs 60 for 10 ppm TEA), and better selectivity (selectivity coefficient S TEA /S ethanol : 400 vs 1850). Besides, an interesting selectivity transformation from ethanol to formaldehyde was also observed after Co doping. These improvements of Co-In 2 O 3 PNSs were mainly attributed to their reduced crystallite size, increased oxygen vacancy concentration, narrowed bandgap, as well as upshifted Fermi level , whose mechanism was discussed.

Abstract Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have potential applications in gas-barrier and anti-photoaging fields, yet the fabrication of high-quality micrometer-sized LDHs with low thickness and excellent dispersibility still faces great challenges. Herein, a general green approach for preparing well-dispersed micrometer-sized LDHs is proposed by taking advantage of the easy peptization property of boehmite, the high reactivity of Ca(OH)2, and the high shearing force of a colloid mill. As a proof of concept, micrometer-sized 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulfonic acid (PBSA)-intercalated hydrocalumite (CaAl-LDH) with high crystallinity is synthesized at 90 °C under atmospheric pressure. The existing strong host–guest interactions between the anionic PBSA guests and the LDH host laminates improve the antimigration performance of PBSA guests. Meanwhile, incorporating PBSA-LDH into polyurethane (PU) significantly enhances both the gas barrier and anti-photoaging performance of PU due to the micrometer size and strong ultraviolet absorption capacity of PBSA-LDH. Adding 5 wt % PBSA-LDH reduces the oxygen transmission rate of PU from 2214.3 to 1332.2 cm3·cm–2·day–1 (a decrease of 39.8%) and the photoaging degree of PU by 52.1%. Notably, this strategy can be readily extended to prepare other micrometer-sized hydrocalumite and has good scalability. Therefore, this novel mild green method is efficient in the scalable synthesis of micrometer-sized functional hydrocalumite with practical applications.

Carbon-based capsule nanomaterials were synthesised through gas-phase detonation using acetylene gas, oxygen, and pentacarbonyl iron. The resulting nanoparticles consisted of a thin layer of capsule-like amorphous carbon with a high specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity. The products exhibited good electromagnetic properties with good reflection loss and absorption capabilities in the frequency range 2–18 GHz. The effective response frequency band ranged from 10.12 to 11.30 GHz, and the reflection loss reached 10.94 dB at 10.96 GHz. The absorption mechanism was mainly owing to dielectric loss as no significant magnetic loss was observed. These nanomaterials have the potential to be used as a matrix for carrying other nanomaterials and for adjusting the impedance-matching of composite materials, thereby enhancing electromagnetic-wave absorption.

The aluminum industry is facing severe economic and environmental problems due to increasing carbon emissions and growing stockpiles of red mud (RM). RM is a strongly alkaline, high-emission solid waste from the alumina industry with potential for CO 2 sequestration. However, the effectiveness of RM carbon sequestration is poor, and the mechanism behind it is not well understood. In this study, the effect of microwave and tube furnace activation of RM on CO 2 sequestration in alumina was first investigated at different temperatures. The result showed that the CO 2 sequestration capacity of unmodified RM (URM) was only 14.35 mg/g at ambient temperature and pressure, and the CO 2 sequestration capacity could be increased to 52.89 mg/g after high-temperature activation and modification. Besides, high-temperature activation and modification will effectively improve the carbon sequestration capacity of RM. The carbonized RM was characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD , laser particle size, TG-DSC, and pH measurements. In addition, the mechanism of RM capturing CO 2 was also proposed, which shows that CO 2 was finally sequestered in the RM as CaCO 3 . The change in particle size distribution and the mineral phase in the RM indicated that high-temperature activation modification positively affects the application of RM to the sequestration of CO 2 . This study can provide a promising technology for the low-carbon and green development of the aluminum industry, as well as achieving the waste treatment and utilization objective.

Oxygenation membranes operate as indirectly contacting barriers between blood and gas in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), improving oxygenation and removing carbon dioxide from blood. However, the low gas exchange efficiency of the current poly (4-methyl-1-pentene) (PMP) artificial lung membrane results in a high prime volume. Facilitated transport membrane is a fascinating strategy to construct high-performance membranes for blood-gas exchange. This study put forward hybrid strategy by using metal-covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) to construct facilitated transport membrane of PMP flat membranes and hollow fiber membranes (HFMs) via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) to achieve facilitated blood-gas exchange. Cu-TAPB-COF nanosheets (CuCON) with framework structure and abundant active metal sites were synthetized and introduced into PMP to construct hybrid oxygenation membranes, reducing the resistance of gas exchange channels and ensuring the high affinity toward CO 2 and O 2 . Cu + and benzene rings existed in aromatic skeleton as well as the tunable structure, that could ensure the stability of MCOF and the uniform distribution of facilitated transport sites. The prepared PMP-CuCON-1 HFMs exhibited O 2 and CO 2 exchange rate of ∼467.5 ml min −1 m −2 and ∼309.1 ml min −1 m −2 in blood gas exchange process, which was 143.1% and 261.3% higher than the commercial PMP HFM, respectively. Asymmetric structure ensured resistance to plasma leakage for more than two weeks, and Cu + kept stable in CuCON and hybrid membranes. The hybrid membrane exhibited superior blood-gas exchange performance and good hemocompatibility, possessing great potential for application.

The present paper studied the chitosan-doped composite diaphragm by the phase exchange method with the objective of developing a composite diaphragm that complies with the alkaline water electrolysis requirements, as well as tested the electrolytic performance of the diaphragm in alkaline water electrolysis. The structure and morphology are characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The performance of chitosan-doped composite diaphragms was tested; CS3Z12 composite diaphragm with a low area resistance (0.20 Ω cm2), a high bubble point pressure (2.75 bar), and excellent electrochemical performance (current density of 650 mA cm–2 at 1.83 V) shows the best performance. Moreover, the performance of the synthesized composite diaphragm is significantly elevated compared to commercial diaphragms (Zirfon PERL), which is promising for practical application in alkaline electrolytic cells.
