Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was synthesized by directly thermal condensation of dicyandiamide and characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and FT-IR. Then the as-prepared catalyst was employed to degrade priority pollutant 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) under visible light irradiation ( λ > 420 nm). The 2,4,6-TCP could be completely mineralized over g-C 3 N 4 , and the pseudo-first-order rate constant for 10 −4 M 2,4,6-TCP degradation was 0.70 h −1 in the presence of 1 g/L catalyst. O 2 - / OOH was identified as the most important reactive species contributing to 2,4,6-TCP degradation in air. Meanwhile, valence band holes (VB holes) of g-C 3 N 4 was observed to play important roles for the degradation of 2,4,6-TCP at N 2 gas ambient when metal ions were added as electron acceptors. The possible degradation pathway of 2,4,6-TCP was proposed.

A layered nanoarchitecture composed of photoactive MOFs of UiO-66-NH2 and graphene was facilely fabricated herein by an innovative strategy, which utilizes a noncovalent methodology for graphene functionalization combined with in situ self-assembling and a solvothermal synthesis technique. The fabricated hybrids were characterized and evaluated in detail by the selective photocatalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol under visible light. The hybrid displayed improved efficiency with high selectivity, compared with the parent MOF. The characterization results clearly demonstrate that this originates from the sandwich-like hierarchical nanoarchitecture formed by the compact interaction between UiO-66-NH2 and graphene via the adopted mediator. The synthesis strategy was also proven effective in building the rGO/NH2-MIL-125(Ti) hierarchical nanoarchitecture. Thus, this work offers a general strategy for constructing MOF/graphene sandwich heterostructures, which have great potential in the fields of electronics, optics, optoelectronics, and photoconversion.

Bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The BiOBr promoted detoxification of cylindrospermopsin (CYN) under UV ( λ < 350 nm) and visible light ( λ > 420 nm) illumination was studied. The results revealed that the toxic uracil unit of CYN was removed, and the carboxylic group of the degraded product was also decomposed, to give the innoxious tricyclic guanidine product under the title conditions. In contrast, the traditional Fenton reagents (Fe 2+ and H 2 O 2 ) limited to remove the uracil moiety of CYN with the carboxylic group intact. Presumably, the decarboxylation ability of BiOBr was induced by Br 4 p valence band hole ( h Br 4 p + ), and the degradation mechanism was also proposed based on the experimental results and theoretical calculation.

Glucose is directly related to brain activity and to diabetes. Therefore, developing a rapid and sensitive method for glucose detection is essential. Here, label-free glucose detection at attomole levels was realized by detecting the average diameter change of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) utilizing dynamic light scattering (DLS). Single-strand DNA (ssDNA) adsorbed into the AuNPs’ surfaces and prevented them from aggregating in solution that contained NaCl. However, ssDNA cleaved onto ssDNA fragments upon addition of glucose, and these fragments could not adsorb onto the AuNPs’ surfaces. Therefore, in high-salt solution, AuNPs would aggregate and their average diameter would increase. Based on monitoring the average diameter of AuNPs with DLS, glucose could be detected in the range from 15 pmol/L to 2.0 nmol/L, with a detection limit of 8.3 pmol/L. Satisfactory results were also obtained when the proposed method was applied in human serum glucose detection.

Fullerene (C60)-enhanced Bi2TiO4F2 hierarchical microspheres were prepared by a facile solvothermal method. Compared to the pure Bi2TiO4F2 photocatalyst, the C60/Bi2TiO4F2 samples exhibit much stronger photocatalytic performance for degrading Rhodamine B (RhB) and Eosin Y (EY) under visible light irradiation. Such greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity may be ascribed to strong combination and heterojunctions between C60 and Bi2TiO4F2, favorable for charge separation and light adsorption. Loading C60 on Bi2TiO4F2 results in a new photocatalytic mechanism (based on photo-generated hvb+ and ·O2- radicals) different from that of pure Bi2TiO4F2.

In2TiO5, containing both early transition metal (d0) and p-block metal (d10), is a very promising candidate for possible application in H2 production because of its suitable edges of conduction and valence bands and the crystal structure, which is considered to favor mobility of charge carriers. Herein we report, for the first time, the synthesis of novel oxygen vacancies (OV), N-doped In2TiO5 (OV,N–In2TiO5) with controllable band gap. The resultant OV,N–In2TiO5 sample was prepared by a multistep sol–gel calcination process and studied as a near-infrared (NIR) light-driven photocatalyst for H2 production. OV and N-doping can effectively extend the photoresponse of In2TiO5 to the NIR region due to an interband springboard and the reduced band gap, thus leading to efficient NIR light photocatalytic H2 production activity with Pt as a cocatalyst.

Lanthanide complexes have attracted increased attention in recent years for their unique photophysical properties such as large Stokes shifts, narrow bandwidth, long radiative lifetimes, and high luminescence quantum yield. However, low photochemical stability and poor mechanical properties limit the technological applicability of lanthanide complexes. Two natural clay minerals, fibrillar palygorskite (Pal) and tubular halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), are known for their extreme stabilities and high surface area and show promise as new carriers of luminescent lanthanide complexes for further applications. In this report, clay-based lanthanide polymer nanocomposites clay–polyethyleneimine (PEI)–MPTP–Eu(DBM) 3 have been fabricated by attaching a lanthanide complex onto the surface of PEI-modified Pal or HNTs. The formed nanocomposites display visible light-excitable features with a wide excitation wavelength range from UV to visible light, a long luminescence lifetime, and improved photoluminescence stability. Their excellent luminescence, high suspension stability, and low cytotoxicity in cell studies result in the potential applications of the as-prepared nanocomposites for cell imaging in biological systems.

Zn3(VO4)2 nanorods with visible light-driven photocatalytic activity were prepared by hydrothermal reaction and characterized by x-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area and pore size analyzer. The Zn3(VO4)2 nanorods consisted of rods with a thickness of approximately 30 nm, length in the range 400–600 nm, and width in the range 150–250 nm. The photocatalytic degradation activities for methylene blue (MB) and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) over the Zn3(VO4)2 nanorods were studied in detail. The photocatalytic activity of the as-prepared photocatalyst for MB and 4-NP in visible light under the same conditions was about 3.5 times and 2.5 times higher than that of N–TiO2, respectively. The main active species in the photodegradation come from •OH, and the photogenerated electrons also partly involved in the photocatalytic degradation process, in which the •OH radicals formed were in proportional to the light illumination time obeying zero-order reaction rate kinetics.

Hierarchical TiO2 spheres composed of nanosheets are successfully synthesized via a simple solvothermal route. TiO2 spheres with high surface area (∼100 m2 g−1) exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity. Au nanoparticles are loaded on the surface of TiO2 nanosheets through anchor molecules – thiolglycolic acid. The LSPR absorption band at ∼550 nm of Au nanoparticles is clearly observed in the diffusion reflective UV-Vis spectra. H2 production results show that the TiO2 spheres have higher photocatalytic activity than commercial P25 TiO2. After loading with Au nanoparticles, TiO2–Au spheres display a 27.6 μmol (g−1 h−1) H2 production rate under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) because the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Au nanoparticles enhances the visible light absorption. Furthermore, the H2 production rate could be improved to 92.4 μmol (g−1 h−1) for TiO2 spheres loaded with both Au and Pt nanoparticles. Based on these results, we propose a possible mechanism. Under UV light, TiO2 absorbs UV light and generates excited electrons, passing to Au nanoparticles for H2 production. In the case of visible light irradiation, the hot electrons are generated from Au nanoparticles due to the LSPR effect. And then the hot electrons are transferred from the Au nanoparticles to TiO2 and cocatalyst Pt nanoparticles for H2 generation.

A photoresponsive amphiphilic gold nanoparticle (AuNP) is achieved through the decoration of AuNP with hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and hydrophobic photoresponsive polymethacrylate containing spiropyran units (PSPMA). Owing to the photoresponsive property of spiropyran units, the amphiphilic AuNPs can easily achieve the controllable assembly/disassembly behaviors under the trigger by light. Under visible light, spiropyran units provide weak intermolecular interactions between neighbored AuNPs, leading to isolated AuNPs in the solution. While under UV light irradiation, spiropyran units in the polymer brushes transform into merocyanine isomer with conjugated structure and zwitterionic state, promoting the integration of adjacent AuNPs through π–π stacking and electrostatic attractions, further leading to the formation of Au oligomers. The smart reversible AuNP oligomers exhibited switchable plasmonic coupling for tuning surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity, which is promising for the application of SERS based sensors and optical imaging.

Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) and electroenzymatic (EEC) process are two important techniques for degradation of refractory organic compounds. In this work, we coupled PEC and EEC (PEC-EEC) to develop a novel system for efficient removal of chloramphenicol (CAP) driven by visible light. This coupling system was constructed by a CdS/WO 3 /FTO photoanode and a hemin-graphene immobilized cathode. The photoanode was fabricated by layer-by-layer assembly of CdS quantum dots on WO 3 /FTO to provide high visible light activity. In order to achieve the EEC process, graphite cathode was modified with hemin-graphene composite, in which hemin served as the mimic enzyme. When CdS/WO 3 /FTO anode was irradiated under visible light, photogenerated holes participated in the formation of hydroxyl radicals while photogenerated electrons were driven by bias potential to the cathode for the reduction of oxygen into hydrogen peroxide. Thus, organic pollutant could be degraded by the oxidation reactions either with the hydroxyl radicals or the hydrogen peroxide under the catalysis of hemin. The visible light-driven PEC-EEC system was applied to the removal of CAP. The intermediates formed during the degradation process were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography and identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and a degradation pathway for CAP in such a PEC-EEC system was proposed.

Graphical ZnO way ! ZnO composite microfibers with different microstructures and embedded with a high population of upconversion nanoparticles are fabricated and show an excellent photocatalytic ability driven by near-infrared light. The fabrication of photocatalysts driven by near-infrared (NIR) light is of great scientific and technological interest to make use of solar energy. NaYF 4 codoped with Yb 3+ and Tm 3+ upconversion nanoparticles are important nanotransducers that transfer NIR photons to high-energy photons (UV/Vis). In this work, we demonstrated an electrospinning technique to synthesize ZnO and porous ZnO composite microfibers embedded with a large amount of NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@NaYF 4 nanoparticles. The morphologies, chemical compositions, and phase of the as-prepared composites were investigated carefully by using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and XRD. Steady-state and dynamic-state fluorescence spectra were used to demonstrate that the embedded NaYF 4 :Yb/Tm@NaYF 4 core–shell nanoparticles can activate the ZnO nanoparticles under IR irradiation. The ZnO composite microfibers can efficiently transfer the NIR photons to the excited state of ZnO and activate the semiconductor to produce reactive oxygen species to result in the degradation of rhodamine B dyes.
