Introducing defects into Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective measure to increase adsorption sites, which is of great significance for improving phosphorus (P) adsorption performance. In this study, various defect-containing cerium (Ce)-based MOFs (Ce-MOFs) were prepared by introducing different types and equivalents of monocarboxylates. Among them, butyric acid (BA)-regulated Ce-MOF (Ce-MOF(40BA)) exhibited excellent adsorption performance with a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 117.28 mg P/g. When the initial phosphate concentration was 3 mg P/L, the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 10 min with a phosphate removal rate of 96.6%. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) showed that the average coordination number of Ce-MOF (40BA) was only 4.33 compared to six of the pristine Ce-MOF, indicating an abundant defect content. By increasing defects, mesopores were introduced, enriching the material’s pore structure and achieving a mesopore proportion up to 58.81%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the introduction of defects created numerous unsaturated metal centers, leading to a significant increase in Ce(III) contents. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the defective Ce-MOF had a lower binding energy compared to the pristine Ce-MOF, making it more favorable for phosphate adsorption. This study provides a strategy for preparing efficient defect-containing MOF adsorbents. The excellent adsorption performance of Ce-MOF(40BA) in practical wastewater bodies makes it a promising material for solving water eutrophication.

Developing efficient and durable platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a major challenge. In this work two Platinum-Zinc Hofmann-type Metal-Organic Frameworks are synthesized by ligand regulation, one with 4,4′-dipyridyl disulfide introducing sulfur and the other with 4,4′-azopyridine as a sulfur-free analogue. After pyrolysis, the sulfur-containing precursor yields small Pt nanoparticles embedded in a sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon matrix (Pt/SNC), while the sulfur-free precursor forms intermetallic L1₀-PtZn on nitrogen-doped carbon (L1 0 -PtZn/NC). Zn evaporation and S/N co-doping in Pt/SNC optimize Pt dispersion, tune electronic structures, and strengthen Pt–carbon interactions, whereas the absence of sulfur stabilizes the L1₀-PtZn phase. Pt/SNC shows much smaller particle sizes (~4.98 nm) than L1 0 -PtZn/NC (~10.61 nm) and exhibits the best ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V, surpassing Pt/C (0.86 V) and L1 0 -PtZn/NC (0.79 V). Its specific and mass activities are 1.6/1.8 times higher than Pt/C and 2.85/6.4 times higher than L1 0 -PtZn/NC. Durability tests confirm that Pt/SNC retains 78 % of its mass activity after 60,000 cycles. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of ligand regulation and S/N co-doping in designing high-performance Pt-based electrocatalysts.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) still present challenges in overcoming the traditional trade-off between permeability and selectivity in gas separation. Functionality of MOFs demonstrates great potentials in overcoming this issue. In this study, hierarchically structured multifunctional C@Fe 2 O 3 @ZIF-8 was proposed to construct strong adsorbed and low-resistance transport pathways enabling high CO 2 sieving through a “selective thermal etching” strategy. Leveraging the thermal stability difference between MIL-88 A(Fe) and ZIF-8, the core undergoes selective pyrolysis while preserving the crystalline ZIF-8 shell. The ZIF-8 shell enhances CO 2 /N 2 separation while optimizing interfacial compatibility, whereas the porous carbon core provides mesoporous structures for enhanced gas transport and ultramicroporous regions for improved CO 2 adsorption. Meanwhile, paramagnetic Fe 2 O 3 in the core layer enables optimized distribution of C@Fe 2 O 3 @ZIF-8 within the Pebax matrix. The C@Fe 2 O 3 @ZIF-8/Pebax MMM exhibits 216.46 % and 65.12 % improvements in CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, respectively, over the Pebax matrix, exceeding the 2019 McKeown upper bound. This study pioneers a novel approach for constructing advanced multicomponent materials with customizable hierarchical structures by synergistically integrating high-throughput carbon channeling with MOFs molecular sieving technology.

A fast fluorescent dual-emission platform for sensitive detection of sodium dehydroacetate (SDHA) in food is established utilizing bimetallic organic frameworks (Eu@Zr-MOFs). Eu@Zr-MOFs show two fluorescent emissions at 430 nm and 616 nm under single excitation wavelength of 290 nm. Two peaks separated by 180 nm help to eliminate environmental interference and improve the accuracy. In the presence of SDHA, fluorescent intensity at 430 nm and 616 nm shows fluorescent quenching within 1 min. Fluorescent lifetime results show that fluorescent quenching is a static quenching mode. Fluorescent quenching may be ascribed to the diketone structure of SDHA coordinated with Eu 3+ and internal filtering effect. The logarithm of fluorescent intensity (lg I 430 nm * I 616 nm ) has linear relationship with the concentration of SDHA from 0.1 µM to 200 µM with a limit of detection of 31.6 nM. More conveniently, it also achieves visual detection of SDHA through fluorescent color by portable UV lamp and smartphone “color capture” mode. The platform is applied to detect SDHA in fermented and baked food samples. Thus it is an efficient and sensitive fluorescent ratio method for SDHA detection with fast response, high selectivity and accuracy. Graphical

On-site rapid food safety testing is an important means of market supervision. A "Dual-response-Reverse" (one signal increases while the other decreases) type biomass carbon quantum dots(G-BCQDs)/Zr-MOFs ratiometric fluorescent paper-based sensor was designed for the visual detection of spermine concentration (SPM, a representative of biological amines).G-BCQD (emitting at 477 nm) and Zr-MOF (emitting at 537 nm) exhibit reverse fluorescence responses to spermine, namely quenching and enhancement, respectively, thus enabling fluorescence ratio detection. The smartphone was connected with the ratiometric fluorescent paper-based sensor to quantitatively detect the concentration of spermine. The results showed that there was a linear relationship between the concentration of spermine in the range of 0.1-220.0 μM and the R' value of RGB values, and the linear equation was R' = 0.3740CSPM + 141.75 (R2 = 0.9913). The detection limit of the method was 19.93 μM. Shrimp samples were selected to evaluate the practicability of the ratiometric fluorescent paper-based sensor for detecting spermine concentration. The results of the spiked recovery experiment showed that the recovery rate of the shrimp samples was in the range of 90.97-101.14%, and the relative standard deviation was less than 2.15%, indicating that the ratiometric fluorescent paper-based sensor had high accuracy and precision and was shown to be applicable for detecting SPM in spoiled samples and thus for monitoring spoilage.

A rational design of high-performance catalysts with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and arsenic adsorption capacities for the removal of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) is in high demand but remains a significant challenge. Herein, vacancies-rich metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were constructed by room-temperature co-precipitation procedure, and the magnetic CoFe encapsulated in N -doped carbon nanotubes (CoFe- N -CNTs) were prepared using MOFs template by an annealing process under a nitrogen atmosphere. The synthesis conditions of CoFe- N -CNTs were optimized by tuning Fe/Co ratio and carbonization temperature. The CoFe- N -CNTs/PMS system showed favorable removal performance, achieving complete degradation of 46 μM p -ASA within 3 min and a total arsenic removal efficiency of 98% within 30 min at 0.1 g/L catalyst and 400 μM PMS. The degradation rate ( k obs ) and total arsenic removal efficiency towards p -ASA by CoFe- N -CNTs/PMS system were 6.7 and 2.7 times of those in the MOFs without vacancies-derived catalyst/PMS system, respectively. CoFe- N -CNTs/PMS system exhibited robust and efficient performance over a broad range of pH (4.5–9.0) and in different water matrices. Scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results demonstrated that non-radical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), sulfate radicals (SO 4 − ), hydroxyl radicals ( OH), and superoxide (O 2 − ) were involved in p -ASA decomposition. Electron transfer and direct oxidative transfer process (DOTP) also contributed to p -ASA degradation. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) analysis indicated that the arsenic moiety was cleaved from p -ASA in the form of As(III) and then rapidly oxidized to As(V). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated the removal of inorganic arsenic followed the mechanism of the inner-sphere complex. This study highlights the in-situ synthesis of CoFe- N -CNTs with outstanding activities for catalytic degradation and arsenic removal of organoarsenicals.

Titanosilicate-1 zeolites (TS-1) as one of the most commonly used catalysts for alkene epoxidation , construction of hierarchical pores as well as elimination of anatase to promote mass transportation and avoid invalid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide are always desirable yet challenging goals. Here, a novel and unique Ti-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-induced synthetic strategy for fabricating anatase-free hierarchical TS-1 was first proposed. All the components of MOFs perform different functions: the uniformly distributed Ti nodes replace conventional tetrabutyl titanate (TBOT) to serve as sole Ti source for constructing zeolite crystal; the separated ligands can be embedded in the zeolite framework and act as template to in situ build hierarchical pore structure ; the coordination interaction between Ti nodes and ligands can efficiently avoid the anatase generation by balancing the forming rates of Ti-OH and Si-OH. This synthetic strategy is of general applicability, and two different synthetic routes including traditional hydrothermal process and steam assisted crystallization (SAC) procedure are successfully adopted. The obtained hydrothermal TS-1 and SAC anatase-free samples all possess abundant intercrystalline mesopores of 20–50 nm and even macropores between 50 and 150 nm, improving the conversion over 25 % for 1‑hexene epoxidation than TS-1 sample prepared by conventional route. The influences of the amount of Ti MOFs precursor and the crystallization process are studied in detail, and possible synthesis mechanisms are proposed. This MOFs-induced strategy might open up an avenue for the rational design of ideal and hierarchical zeolite to boost the catalytic efficiency.

Graphical NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Er@NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 core@shell@shell three-layer structure of upconversion nanoparticles coated with Fe−TCPP metal-organic frameworks nanocomposite was designed and constructed for multimodal imaging and synergetic chemodynamic therapy/photodynamic therapy of tumors. Here, NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Er@NaGdF 4 ,Yb,Tm@NaYF 4 core@shell@shell three-layer structure of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) coated with Fe−Tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphine (TCPP) metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) nanocomposite (UCNPs@MOFs) was designed and constructed for multimodal imaging and synergetic chemodynamic therapy (CDT)/photodynamic therapy (PDT) of tumors. The UCNPs@MOFs were successfully applied for tumor cells imaging in vitro and in vivo in near-infrared (NIR) region. The doped Gd was used as contrast agent for the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of mouse tumors. The luminescence in the UV-vis region was absorbed by the Fe-MOFs to produce singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) for PDT. The Fe 3+ doped in the MOFs can catalyze H 2 O 2 to produce oxygen and hydroxyl radical (⋅OH). Hydroxyl radical is used in CDT and cooperates with the 1 O 2 of PDT. Based on the CDT/PDT synergistic effects, the UCNPs@MOFs nanocomposite had obviously enhanced tumor inhibitory efficiency in vivo. These results described that the asprared UCNPs@MOFs nanocomposite have great potential in the effective multimodal imaging and treatment of tumors.

The key to efficient treatment of organic pollutants in water is to improve their mass transfer efficiency and reaction efficiency. Herein, a one-step construction of new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using 4, 4′, 4″, 4″-(pyrene-1, 3, 6, 8-tetrayl) tetra-benzoic acid as a photosensitizer ligand and Ti-In as bimetallic centers has been constructed. The results exhibited that increased specific surface area was obtained by Ti-In-MOF(1:1), which improved the adsorption performance of 50 ppm bisphenol A to 38% and facilitated it complete degradation upon light irradiation in 20 min, being much faster than that of single In/Ti-MOFs. For Ti-In-MOF(1:1), the In-MOF parts enhanced the adsorption capability, meanwhile the Ti-MOF parts based on infinite Ti-O chains realized the effective separation of photogenerated carriers. A synergistic role of adsorption and degradation achieved rapid mass transfer and excellent catalytic degradation performance. This investigation will provide a novel MOF construction strategy for efficient catalytic application in environmental pollutants.

Due to the high dependence on tetracycline in the daily production and life of human beings, its abuse problem is serious, which affects the safety of the ecological environment. How to effectively remove residual tetracycline in the environment is an urgent problem to be solved. In this study, HKUST-1 was successfully composited with rice husk and wheat straw biochar by hydrothermal method, and then combined with κ-carrageenan and calcium alginate by cross-linking replacement method to prepare a novel modified biochar composite gel. Through a series of static adsorption experiments, the adsorption of TC on the two modified biochar composite gels reached equilibrium within 24 h and was dominated by chemical adsorption , and the maximum adsorption capacities for TC could reach 313.00 and 396.09 mg·g −1 , respectively. The adsorption mechanism of TC on the modified biochar composite gels is mainly hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, metal-organic complexation and π-π interaction. At the same time, the dynamic adsorption process was simulated through a fixed-bed column experiment, and the results showed that the modified biochar composite gels as a new type of adsorption material can be effectively applied to the removal of organic pollutants in actual sewage, providing basic support for future practical application research.

The construction of composite materials is an effective strategy to solve the problems of poor conductivity, manganese dissolution, and volume expansion of manganese-based materials. Herein, a CeO 2 /MnO x @C hollow composite cathode derived from the self-assembly of Ce-Mn-metal-organic frameworks (Ce-Mn-MOFs) was synthesized. The abundant oxygen vacancies and good electronic/ionic conductivity of CeO 2 improve the electrical conductivity of composite, enhancing the rate performance. The unique hollow structure could inhibit manganese dissolution and alleviate volume expansion. The results indicate that the 1 % CeO 2 /MnO x @C composite cathode possesses a high reversible capacity and excellent cycling stability. Specifically, the 1 % CeO 2 /MnO x @C composite cathode shows a remarkable reversible specific capacity of 130 mAh/g at a current density of 500 mA g −1 , 6.5 times more than the pure MnO x (20 mAh/g). The capacity retention is up to 99.5 % relative to the initial capacity after 800 cycles. This study provides a new strategy for designing rare-earth composite electrodes to improve electrochemical performance.

Integrating dual Lewis acid and base as well as rational hierarchical pore structure in one catalyst is favorable to significantly boost the CO 2 cycloaddition reaction at mild conditions. In this regard, carbonized melamine sponge (CMS) featuring a highly porous network, rich nitrogen doping and excellent photothermal capability is employed as the ideal host for the construction of CMS@MOFs (namely, MIL-88-NH 2 and ZIF-8-NH 2 ) composites with diverse acid-base properties. Results show that all the obtained composites exhibited a satisfactory CO 2 adsorbing capacity (33–54 cm 3 /g) and delivered a remarkable yield of target cyclic carbonate at either mild thermal conditions (0.1 MPa CO 2 and 80 o C) or under light irradiation (light intensity: ~350 mW/cm 2 ) at room temperature. Even with diluted CO 2 (15 vol. % CO 2 ), high yields of 80–82 % are achievable. Moreover, the used catalysts can be easily recycled from reaction systems, leading to a good recyclability .
