Construction of an Amethyst-like MoS2@Ni9S8/Co3S4 Rod Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Zhen Pei,Tengteng Qin,Rui Tian,Yangxin Ou,Xingzhong Guo

Transition metal sulphide electrocatalytic materials possess the bright overall water-splitting performance of practical electrocatalytic technologies. In this study, an amethyst-like MoS2@Ni9S8/Co3S4rod electrocatalyst was constructed via a one-step hydrothermal method with in-situ-grown ZIF-67 nanoparticles on nickel foam (NF) as a precursor. The rational design and synthesis of MoS2@Ni9S8/Co3S4endow the catalyst with neat nanorods morphology and high conductivity. The MoS2@Ni9S8/Co3S4/NF with the amethyst-like rod structure exposes abundant active sites and displays fast electron-transfer capability. The resultant MoS2@Ni9S8/Co3S4/NF exhibits outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic activities, with low overpotentials of 81.24 mV (HER) at 10 mA cm−2and 159.67 mV (OER) at 50 mA cm−2in 1.0 M KOH solution. The full-cell voltage of overall water splitting only achieves 1.45 V at 10 mA cm−2. The successful preparation of the amethyst-like MoS2@Ni9S8/Co3S4rod electrocatalyst provides a reliable reference for obtaining efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Sustainable production of clean water: 1 T-MoS2/PDA composite enhanced the photothermal conversion

Hankui Sang,Congming Tang,Kai Ma,Xinli Li

The scarcity of fresh water resources necessitates us to develop an efficient technique for sustainable production of clean water from seawater and wastewater. Here, we constructed the 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA (polyaniline) as a photothermal material for purification of seawater and wastewater to produce clean water through interfacial evaporation by virtue of sunlight. 1 T-MoS 2 has a higher evaporation capacity of water than 2 H-MoS 2 , which was selected to prepare 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite for photothermal conversion. As expected, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite offers a higher evaporation rate of water than both 1 T-MoS 2 and PDA , which owes to an excellent light absorbance, low light reflectance and good wettability . Under irradiation of 1 sun, the evaporation rate of water over the 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite in pure water reached 1.51 kg m −2 h −1 , and the photothermal conversion efficiency reached 92%. Encouragingly, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite can be well used to treat real seawater and various wastewater such as organic dye solution and heavy metal ion solution, in which the evaporation rate of water is close to pure water, and the quality of water is better than the standard of drinking water established by the World Health Organization (WHO). Besides, 1 T-MoS 2 /PDA composite still maintain an excellent evaporation performance after treatment of acidic solution and alkaline solution, indicating an excellent durability. This work provides a feasible solution for producing clean water by solar-driven interfacial evaporation from seawater and wastewater.

Effect of vacuum heat treatment on tribological properties of metal-doped CuS/MoS2 coating

Cao Ming,Zhao Lan

The tribological properties of metal-CuS/MoS2 composite coatings were improved by selecting the metal materials and optimizing the heat treatment process. The composite coatings were prepared by magnetron cosputtering of copper or aluminum metals, CuS, and MoS2. Then, the prepared Cu-CuS/MoS2 and Al-CuS/MoS2 were subjected to vacuum heat treatment at 220, 320, and 420 °C. The structure and tribological properties of the composite coatings were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, energy spectrum, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum, and multifunction friction tester. The results showed an island-like growth and a dense noncylindrical cross-sectional morphology of the metal-CuS/MoS2 composite coating. Metal- and CuS-doped MoS2 solid solution is a practical component in composite coatings. The wear scar of the composite coatings showed different color layers at different annealing temperatures due to composition deviation. After heat treatment at 320 °C, the friction coefficient of Cu-CuS/MoS2 coating was reduced to a minimum of 0.08. After heat treatment at 420 °C, the Al-CuS/MoS2 coating showed three different color layers of wear scar, and good tribological properties were obtained. The friction coefficient of the Al-CuS/MoS2 coating was as low as 0.06, and the adhesion of the Al-CuS/MoS2 coating was expressed in the HF1 level. The results show that the vacuum heat treatment can stimulate the action of CuS by forming a solid solution with MoS2, complementing the missing S atom during the sputtering deposition of MoS2 and improving the lubrication of the composite coating. In addition, although the action mechanisms are different, Cu and Al doping are all conducive to obtaining composite coatings with better tribological properties.

Fabrication of MoS2/C60 Nanolayer Field-Effect Transistor for Ultrasensitive Detection of miRNA-155

Youqiang Xing,Yun Wang,Lei Liu,Ze Wu

As a major public health issue, early cancer detection is of great significance. A field-effect transistor (FET) based on an MoS2/C60composite nanolayer as the channel material enhances device performance by adding a light source, allowing the ultrasensitive detection of cancer-related miRNA. In this work, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was used to deposit MoS2layer by layer, and C60was deposited by an evaporation coater to obtain a composite nanolayer with good surface morphology as the channel material of the FET. Based on the good absorption of C60by blue-violet light, a 405 nm laser was selected to irradiate the channel material, improving the function of FET biosensors. A linear detection window from 10 pM to 1 fM with an ultralow detection limit of 5.16 aM for miRNA-155 was achieved. Keywords:ultrasensitive detection;FET;MoS2/C60composite nanolayer

Enhanced kinetic behaviors of hollow MoO2/MoS2 nanospheres for sodium-ion-based energy storage

Jinyang Wu,Mingjun Jing,Tianjing Wu,Mingguang Yi,Yansong Bai,Wenhui Deng,Yirong Zhu,Yingchang Yang,Xianyou Wang

Mo-based heterostructures offer a new strategy to improve the electronics/ion transport and diffusion kinetics of the anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). MoO 2 /MoS 2 hollow nanospheres have been successfully designed via in-situ ion exchange technology with the spherical coordination compound Mo-glycerates (MoG). The structural evolution processes of pure MoO 2 , MoO 2 /MoS 2 , and pure MoS 2 materials have been investigated, illustrating that the structure   of   the   nanosphere   can be maintained by introducing the S-Mo-S bond. Based on the high conductivity of MoO 2 , the layered structure of MoS 2 and the synergistic effect between components, as-obtained MoO 2 /MoS 2 hollow nanospheres display enhanced electrochemical kinetic behaviors for SIBs. The MoO 2 /MoS 2 hollow nanospheres achieve a rate performance with 72% capacity retention at a current of 3200 mA g −1 compared to 100 mA g −1 . The capacity can be restored to the initial capacity after a current returns to 100 mA g −1 , while the capacity fading of pure MoS 2 is up to 24%. Moreover, the MoO 2 /MoS 2 hollow nanospheres also exhibit cycling stability, maintaining a stable capacity of 455.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at a current of 100 mA g −1 . In this work, the design strategy for the hollow composite structure provides insight into the preparation of energy storage materials.

MXene-MoS2 nanocomposites via chemical vapor deposition with enhanced electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution

Zhang Ruijie,Sun Yajing,Jiao Fei,Li Lin,Geng Dechao,Hu Wenping

As a new paradigm of material science, two-dimensional (2D) heterostructured composites have attracted extensive interests because of combining the collective advantages and collaborative characteristics of individual building blocks. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) has demonstrated great promise as a low-cost substitute to platinum-based catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen production. However, the broad adoption of MoS 2 is hindered by its limited number of active sites and low inherent electrical conductivity. One of the promising methods to further activate MoS 2 is coupling engineering. Here, we demonstrate for the first time the synthesis of 2D MXene-MoS 2 nanocomposites through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach, thus leading to precise design in structure type and orientation. The computational results show that nanocomposites have metallic properties. Owing to their unique 2D/2D structure, MXene-MoS 2 nanocomposites exhibit more active catalytic sites, resulting in higher electrochemical performance, as inherited from parent excellent characteristics, and a much lower overpotential of ∼ 69 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 is achieved. This work paves the way to employ CVD method by coupling engineering to construct 2D nanocomposites for energy storage applications.

Hydrogen isotopic water separation in membrane distillation through BN, MoS2 and their heterostructure membranes

Dapeng Sun,Run Li,Ming Wen,Xin Zhang,Min Chen,Haowei Yang,Denggao Guan,Cigang Xu,Guoshu Zhang

The development and application of nuclear energy involves a challenging process of separating H 2 O/HTO to treat tritium-containing radioactive wastewater (HTO). Recently graphene oxide (GO)-based membrane distillation process has shown good performance for the separation of H 2 O/D 2 O used as a laboratory model research process for H 2 O/HTO separation, but further development of novel membrane materials or structures for membrane distillation process to give higher permeation flux or separation factor is still desirable. Here, boron nitride (BN) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) were investigated as membrane materials in the type of PTFE supported membrane, and PTFE/BN membrane showed higher permeation flux than PTFE/MoS 2 and PTFE/GO membrane, and higher separation factor than PTFE/GO membrane that was higher than PTFE/MoS 2 membrane. Furthermore, binary PTFE/BN/GO and PTFE/MoS 2 /GO heterostructure composite membranes were explored. The permeation flux of PTFE/BN/GO membrane was higher than that of PTFE/MoS 2 /GO and PTFE/GO/GO membrane. The separation factor of PTFE/BN/GO membrane was higher than that of PTFE/GO/GO membrane, which was higher than that of PTFE/MoS 2 /GO membrane. These results suggest that other 2D material- or heterostructure membranes can give performance comparable with or even better than GO membrane for the separation of H 2 O/D 2 O. This can guide for further exploration of novel materials or membrane structures for membrane distillation process with higher performance to provide a solution for the treatment of tritium-containing radioactive wastewater in the nuclear energy sector.

Engineering edge sites based on NiS2/MoS2/CNTs heterojunction catalyst for overall water splitting

Guang-Lan Li,Ying-Ying Miao,Xiang-Yue Qiao,Tian-Yu Wang,Fei Deng

Boosting the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) on MoS 2 -based catalysts is a challenging scientific issue due to the activity of MoS 2 is significantly rely on the edge site which is limited in regular structure. Herein, a highly dispersed edge site-rich NiS 2 /MoS 2 /CNTs heterojunction catalyst is successfully developed via facile etching the nanoflower-like NiS 2 /MoS 2 spheres on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Through expanding the lattice spacing of 2H-MoS 2 , generating abundant Mo-S edge sites ( i.e . generating a large number of unsaturated S atoms) together with enhancing the dispersity of NiS 2 /MoS 2 nanosheets, the etching posttreatment significantly regulates the electronic and geometric structure of NiS 2 /MoS 2 /CNTs. Further combining the extremely intimate electronic interaction between MoS 2 /NiS 2 heterogeneous interfaces, the optimal NiS 2 /MoS 2 /CNTs presents a preeminent alkali water splitting performance with overpotentials of 149 for HER and 315 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , which are 29 and 35 mV lower than the catalyst before etch treatment (NiS 2 /MoS 2 /CNTs-p), respectively. Moreover, the electrolyzer assembled with NiS 2 /MoS 2 /CNTs drives a voltage of 1.73 V at 10 mA cm −2 and a continuous stable operation of 50 h toward overall water splitting.

MoS2/Au/Ag Nanostructures for Ratiometric Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Determination of Pesticide Residues

Xingxing Yu,Yan Sun,Jieyu Hu,Junjie Wang,Xiumei Zhuang,Shenghao Zhang,Haiting Ren,Hongxing Qiu,Yueshou Zhang,Yongjun Hu

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a promising method for rapid and sensitive detection of pesticide residues. Herein, a three-dimensional MoS2/Au/Ag nanostructure was developed by employing composite systems containing semiconductors, noble metal nanoparticles, and internal standard. The MoS2 nanoflowers provide abundant anchors for the loading of plasmonic nanoparticles so as to generate intense electromagnetic “hot spots,” and the Au-MBN/Ag nanostructures can increase the accuracy of SERS detection with the calibration ability of the internal standard molecules (4-mercaptobenzonitrile, 4-MBN). Therefore, the MoS2/Au/Ag nanostructures integrate the advantages of high-enhancement SERS substrates and high-accuracy ratiometric Raman detection. Moreover, the nanostructures were fabricated via a facile procedure and showed high sensitivity, accuracy, and reproducibility in SERS detection. The nanostructures also showed good linear fitting between the ratios of Raman intensity and logarithmic concentrations of analytes in ratiometric SERS analysis. In addition, thiabendazole (TBZ) in apple juice was successfully detected by using the as-prepared SERS substrates with a limit of detection down to 0.1 ppm in practical applications. To conclude, the MoS2/Au/Ag nanostructures showed excellent SERS activity in ratiometric analysis and the substrate is expected to have great potential for the quantitative detection of low-concentration pesticide residues.

Fabrication of an ultrathin 2D/2D C3N4/MoS2 heterojunction photocatalyst with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Weibing Li,Lin Wang,Qiang Zhang,Zhuoyuan Chen,Xiaoyan Deng,Chang Feng,Likun Xu,Mingxian Sun

An ultrathin 2D/2D C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 (U-CN/MoS 2 ) heterojunction photocatalyst was prepared by a simple mechanical grinding technique to investigate the photocatalytic degradation RhB and hydrogen production performance. Physical characterization shows that the ultrathin MoS 2 nanosheets (U-MoS 2 ) can form heterojunction with the ultrathin C 3 N 4 (U-CN), and their intrinsic crystal structure remains stable. Further photocatalytic performance test demonstrated that the U-CN/MoS 2 heterojunction photocatalyst significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of U-CN. The U-CN/MoS 2 photocatalyst with 3% mass fraction of MoS 2 station (U-CN/MoS 2 -3) has the optimal photocatalytic performance. Due to MoS 2 has a suitable band structure and can replace noble metal as a co-catalyst, the U-CN/MoS 2 -3 could achieve the hydrogen production efficiency of 385.04 μmol∙h −1 ∙g −1 , which makes MoS 2 show potential in photocatalytic hydrogen production. The enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the significantly enhanced concentration of photogenerated carriers, the effective separation of photogenerated carriers, and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes in the photocatalytic reaction.

Nanocomposite membranes embedded with functionalized MoS2 nanosheets for enhanced interfacial compatibility and nanofiltration performance

Meng-Qi Ma,Chao Zhang,Cheng-Ye Zhu,Sheng Huang,Jing Yang,Zhi-Kang Xu

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have attracted extensive attention and have been considered as compelling nanofillers of polyamide-based nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) with thin film nanocomposite (TFN) frame. However, there still remains a big challenge, the poor compatibility between these 2D nanofillers and the polyamide matrix, significantly restricting their practical applications. Herein, we present TFN NFMs by incorporating tannic acid (TA) functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets into the polyamide skin layers via typical interfacial polymerization of piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). TA was employed to assist the aqueous exfoliation of bulk MoS 2 into 2D nanosheets, and simultaneously served as the functional molecule to modify and stabilize the as-exfoliated MoS 2 nanosheets in aqueous solutions. Thanks to the contribution of TA, the MoS 2 nanosheets can be covalently linked into the skin layers through the reaction of TA and TMC, thus exhibiting excellent compatibility with polyamide matrix. Besides, the as-prepared TFN NFMs show promoted water permeation as high as 17.0 L/m 2 ⋅h⋅bar without compromising the salt rejection of divalent ions (98.5%). Moreover, these high-performance TFN NFMs also possess outstanding long-term stability, with great implication for the practical applications.
