Nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Ru nanoparticles as a highly efficient and stable electrocatalyst for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction

Jianchao Yue,Pengyu Han,Xinyi Yang,Xiaoqin Ma,Yu Zhang,Liqing Wu,Jianchuan Wang,Wei Luo

Designing non-Pt-based electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity is challenging but extremely desirable for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Herein, we successfully design a nitrogen doped carbon shell coated Ru nanoparticles (Ru@NC) catalyst for efficient alkaline HOR. The obtained Ru@NC exhibits an excellent mass activity of 1.279 mA μg PGM -1 , which is 8.1-times, 10.3-times and 3.7-times higher than that of Ru@C, Ru/C and commercial Pt/C. When further employed as the anode catalyst for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), a peak power density of 1.114 W cm -2 can be achieved for Ru@NC. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results indicate that the hydroxyl binding energy (OHBE) is continually enhanced on the catalysts due to the encapsulation of carbon shell and nitrogen doping derived from the upshifted d-band center of Ru sites in catalysts, which is responsible for the enhanced alkaline HOR performance.

Multiple-atom-site catalysts for highly efficient hydrogen production from ammonia decomposition over Ru/LaxTiyAz (A = O, N)

Xiao-Yu Guo,Jun-Hao Wang,Ting-Zhou Li,Kai Xu,Chun-Jiang Jia,Hao Dong,Ding Ma,Chen Li,Ya-Wen Zhang

The efficient ammonia decomposition catalysts are crucial for advancing the application of hydrogen energy produced from ammonia. Herein, La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and LaTiO 2 N are developed as supports for constructing efficient Ru/La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Ru/LaTiO 2 N ammonia decomposition catalysts. Compared with monoxide supported catalysts such as Ru/La 2 O 3 , Ru/TiO 2 and Ru/SiO 2 , Ru/La 2 Ti 2 O 7 shows higher activity, achieving an NH 3 conversion rate of 66.5% at 450 °C with a fairly low Ru loading amount (about 1.4 wt%). Using Ru/LaTiO 2 N, we achieve an even higher NH 3 conversion rate (76.1%), hydrogen production rate (1556 mmol/(g Ru ·min)), and 140-hour catalytic stability at 450 °C with a GHSV of 30000 mL/(g cat ·h). Various characterizations demonstrate that the presence of Ti n + is conductive to the adsorption of NH 3 , while the presence of La 3+ with its coordinated O 2– endows La 2 Ti 2 O 7 and LaTiO 2 N with robust surface basicity facilitating the recombination and desorption of N*, together assisting the active metal Ru to catalyze ammonia decomposition. This study provides new material options and design insights from the collective contribution of multiple atom sites in a complex multicomponent heterogeneous catalytic system for the development of efficient Ru-based ammonia decomposition catalysts.

Preparation of Bush-Like Ru/NiO-Ni Foam Catalyst and Its Performance in Hydrogen Production from Sodium Borohydride Alcoholysis

Fanghui Wang,Yimeng Luo,Yajun Zhang,Yanan Wang,Hong Zhu

A NiO–Ni foam composite carrier was prepared by the hydrothermal method. Ruthenium metal was supported on the NiO–Ni foam by electroplating, obtaining a highly active bush-like Ru/NiO–Ni foam catalyst. To investigate the effect of NiO on the structure and performance of the catalyst, a Ru/Ni foam catalyst was prepared as a reference. The structures of the carrier and both catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the performances of both catalysts were evaluated in alcoholytic hydrogen production from sodium borohydride. On the carrier with the NiO-treated surface, the active component Ru developed a three-dimensional bush-like structure that enhanced the catalytic activity. Indeed, the hydrogen production from alcoholysis of sodium borohydride was three times higher on the Ru/NiO–Ni foam catalyst than on the Ru/Ni foam catalyst, and the highest rate exceeded 6 L/g/min. The repeated-use stability of the Ru/NiO–Ni catalyst (10 times) also exceeded that of Ru/Ni foam (8 times). However, as both catalysts used the same active component (i.e., Ru), their activation energies were almost identical.

Constructing abundant active interfaces in ultrafine Ru nanoparticles doped nickel–iron layered double hydroxide to promote electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Shaoda Huang,Jiayao Zheng,Zhiwei Qin,Yang Li,Fangping Xu,Fang Duan,Han Zhu,Shuanglong Lu,Mingliang Du

Due to the inherent sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), designing high-efficient and stable electrocatalysts is essential and urgent for the practical use of energy conversion devices. The transition-metal based layered double hydroxide (LDH) is considered as an alternative candidate with desired OER activity, while its catalytic performance is impeded by the limited active sites, poor conductivity and durability. Herein, the ultrafine and well-dispersed Ru nanoparticles doped NiFe LDH (Ru-NiFe-LDH) is designed as highly efficient electrocatalyst for OER. Benefiting from synergistic electronic modulation, as well as the abundant active interfaces, between Ru nanoparticles and NiFe LDH, Ru-NiFe-LDH shows superior electrocatalytic activity in alkaline electrolyte with a low overpotential of 256 mV at the current density of 50 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the Ru-NiFe-LDH exhibits comparable activity toward oxygen reduction (ORR). As a concept verification, a homemade Zn-air battery assembled by Ru-NiFe LDH presents desired performance and stability under practical operating conditions. This work may broaden the family of advanced electrocatalysts for electrochemical energy conversion .

Integrating Ru-modulated CoP nanosheets binary co-catalyst with 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity

Suci Meng,Pengfei An,Lijie Chen,Shichao Sun,Zhongkai Xie,Min Chen,Deli Jiang

Developing high-efficient and low-cost photocatalysts is of great significance yet challenging for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. Herein, we report a 2D/2D Ru-modulated CoP nanosheets (Ru-CoP -x , where x refers the Ru-to-Co molar ratio)/g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (GCN NSs) ternary hybrid as a photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution under visible light. The optimal photocatalyst 25% Ru-CoP-1:8/GCN NSs exhibits an excellent hydrogen evolution rate of 1172.5 µmol g −1 h −1 under visible light with a high apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 3.49% at 420 nm, which is close to Pt/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic system and higher than most reported transition metal phosphides (TMP)/g-C 3 N 4 photocatalytic system. Experimental results indicate that the higher photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance can be mainly attributed to the binary Ru-CoP -x co-catalyst with efficient charge separation and promoted surface water reduction kinetics, and the 2D/2D self-assembly structure with strong interface Schottky effect and short charge transport distance. This study provides a new approach to develop cost-effective Pt-alternative co-catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution by incorporating a small amount of ruthenium into the transition metal phosphides.

Ru Nanoparticles Supported on Co-Embedded N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution in Basic Media

Yan Baolin,Liu Dapeng,Feng Xilan,Shao Mingzhe,Zhang Yu

A challenging but urgent task is to construct efficient and robust hydrogen evolution reaction(HER) electrocatalysts for practically feasible and sustainable hydrogen production through alkaline water electrolysis. Herein we report a simple and mild pyrolysis method to synthesize the efficient Ru nanoparticles(NPs) supported on Co-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes(Ru/Co-NCNTs) catalyst for HER in basic media. The Ru/Co-NCNTs display remarkable performance with a low overpotential of only 35 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 , a small Tafel slope(36 mV/dec), and a high mass activity in 1 mol/L KOH, which is superior to commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. This excellent performance is benefited from the enhanced conductivity of N-doped carbon nanotubes(NCNTs) and high intrinsic activity triggered by synergistic coupling between Ru NPs and Co-embedded N-doped carbon nanotubes(Co-NCNTs).

Influence of the functional groups of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on performance of Ru catalysts in sorbitol hydrogenolysis to glycols

Xingcui Guo,Huihuan Dong,Bin Li,Linlin Dong,Xindong Mu,Xiufang Chen

Different functional groups (i.e. NH 2 , COOH, OH and nitrogen-doping) modified CNTs (denoted as AMCN, CMCN, HMCN and NMCN, respectively) supported ruthenium catalysts (Ru/AMCN, Ru/CMCN, Ru/HMCN and Ru/NMCN) were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method. They were fully characterized by XRD, TG, Raman, XPS, TPD and TEM to elucidate the relationship between the physical property and their catalytic performance. TEM results shown that Ru particles were well dispersed on the surface for all the samples with the size of 1.48–1.99   nm. The effects of functional groups of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nitrogen doping and base additive types on activity and selectivity of ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (1,2-PD) were investigated. In addition, the activity and final products distribution were much influenced by the properties of functional groups on CNTs and the type of metal cation of the base promoters, which probably participated in the reaction for accelerating a retro-aldol reaction for C C cleavage. Among the catalysts, Ru supported on AMCN exhibited the best catalytic activities and glycols selectivities than on MCN, CMCN, HMCN and NMCN.

Ionic liquid modified montmorillonite-supported Ru nanoparticles: highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds to cycloalkanes

Huanjun Xu,Kongchen Wang,Hongye Zhang,Leiduan Hao,Jilei Xu,Zhimin Liu

The Ru/MMT@IL-SO3H catalyst was prepared by immobilizing Ru nanoparticles onto montmorillonite (MMT) with the assistance of an acidic ionic liquid (1-sulfobutyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrosulfate, IL-SO3H). Transmission electron microscopy examination indicated that the loaded Ru species were distributed uniformly on the MMT support with a particle size of about 1.3 nm, which existed mainly in the form of a metallic state as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. X-Ray diffraction analysis indicated that the interlayer distance of MMT was increased due to the impregnation of IL-SO3H. The activity of Ru/MMT@IL-SO3H for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of various phenolic compounds was investigated. It was demonstrated that the as-prepared catalyst served as a bifunctional catalyst and displayed high efficiency for HDO reactions of a series of phenolic compounds to cycloalkanes.

Electrochemical oxidation of acid orange 74 using Ru, IrO2, PbO2, and boron doped diamond anodes: Direct and indirect oxidation

Aiyuan Li,Jiaqi Weng,Xinmei Yan,Hao Li,Haibo Shi,Xuedong Wu

This study compares the electrochemical oxidation of acid orange 74 (AO 74), a typical metal complex azo dye, on four anode materials (Ru, IrO 2 , PbO 2 , and boron doped diamond (BDD)). The results show that the BDD electrode was quite efficient in the anodic oxidation of AO 74 with a 100% removal of AO 74 and an 84.3% removal of COD. Analyzing the active species at different electrodes, we reported that oxidation on an inert electrode primarily depends on direct oxidation and indirect oxidation of active radicals ( OH and O 2 − for the BDD anode and OH for the PbO 2 anode), whereas active electrodes (Ru and IrO 2 ) primarily depend on direct oxidation. The UV–vis spectrum demonstrated that Cr 3+ could be oxidized only on the BDD anode, proving that the BDD electrode has the highest oxidation potential. Similar organic intermediates species were observed on different electrodes by GC–MS. Furthermore, the different organic products are attributed to the difference in the oxidation ability of the electrodes. From the UV–vis spectrum and GC–MS analysis, we speculate that AO 74 was first degraded to aromatic compounds and pyrazole because of the cleavage of the azo-bond. Then it formed amides and organic acid because of the cleavage of the benzene ring, and finally CO 2 and H 2 O were formed.

Solvent-free microwave synthesis of ultra-small Ru-Mo2C@CNT with strong metal-support interaction for industrial hydrogen evolution

Wu Xueke,Wang Zuochao,Zhang Dan,Qin Yingnan,Wang Minghui,Han Yi,Zhan Tianrong,Yang Bo,Li Shaoxiang,Lai Jianping,Wang Lei

Exploring a simple, fast, solvent-free synthetic method for large-scale preparation of cheap, highly active electrocatalysts for industrial hydrogen evolution reaction is one of the most promising work today. In this work, a simple, fast and solvent-free microwave pyrolysis method is used to synthesize ultra-small (3.5 nm) Ru-Mo 2 C@CNT catalyst with heterogeneous structure and strong metal-support interaction in one step. The Ru-Mo 2 C@CNT catalyst only exhibits an overpotential of 15 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and exhibits a large turnover frequency value up to 21.9 s −1 under an overpotential of 100 mV in 1.0 M KOH. In addition, this catalyst can reach high current densities of 500 mA cm −2 and 1000 mA cm −2 at low overpotentials of 56 mV and 78 mV respectively, and it displays high stability of 1000 h. This work provides a feasible way for the reasonable design of other large-scale production catalysts.

Highly potential-resolved anodic electrochemiluminescence multiplexing immunoassay with CuInS2@ZnS nanocrystals and [Ru(bpy)2(dcbpy)]2+ as emitters

Zhipeng Li,Shuo Wu,Guizheng Zou

Discriminating the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of differed luminophores is crucial for ECL multiplexing. However, because of the limited potential window for ECL assay and the overlapped triggering-potential-range between different luminophores, the potential-resolved ECL multiplexing with good resolutions ( R s ) is still a great challenge. Herein, a single anodic ECL from two luminophores in the aqueous solution was discriminated completely (baseline separation, R s  ≥ 1.5) in a potential-resolved way with the water-soluble CuInS 2 @ZnS ( [email protected] ) nanocrystals (NCs) and [Ru(bpy) 2 (dcbpy)] 2+ as luminophores and N 2 H 4 as the co-reactant. N 2 H 4 could be electrochemically oxidized to reducing radicals and then reacted with the electrochemically oxidized [email protected] NCs and [Ru(bpy) 2 (dcbpy)] 2+ in sequence to produce co-reactant ECL. The potential-resolved ECL of [email protected] NCs/N 2 H 4 and [Ru(bpy) 2 (dcbpy)] 2+ /N 2 H 4 could be well defined and distinguished from each other upon potential scanning ( R s  = 2.60) and utilized for simultaneously determining human prostate specific antigen and carcinoma antigen 125 at the pathological cut-off concentration ( R s  = 1.56).

Coherent Exsolution of Ultrafine Ru Nanoparticles on Double Perovskite Boosts CO2 and H2O Electrolysis via Strong Metal-Support Interactions

Yuanzhen Liu,Tong Wang,Zhihong Du,Yuhao Wang,Yue Gong,Konrad Świerczek,Hailei Zhao

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) hold significant potential for efficient, high‑rate conversion of CO 2 and H 2 O into syngas driven by renewable electricity. However, SOEC performance is often constrained by the scarcity of fuel electrode materials that combine high activity with structural stability for CO 2 and H 2 O electrochemical reduction. Here, we develop a rationally designed fuel electrode, Sr 1.95 FeMg 0.3 Mo 0.6 Ru 0.1 O 6-δ (SFMMRu), that exhibits coherent exsolution of ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles (1-5 nm) with an exceptionally high surface number density (∼2.7 × 10 4 particles µm −2 ). The resulting high density of stable metal-oxide interfaces markedly enhances CO 2 and H 2 O electroreduction kinetics. As a result, the SFMMRu exhibits low polarization resistances of 0.254 Ω cm 2 in 50% CO/CO 2 and 0.143 Ω cm 2 in 40% H 2 O/H 2 at 800°C. In SOEC operation at 1.5 V, high current densities of 2.24 A cm −2 and 2.88 A cm −2 are achieved for CO 2 and H 2 O electrolysis, respectively. Long-term operation exceeding 200 h at 1 A cm −2 in pure CO 2 demonstrates the high durability of the fuel electrode. Advanced electron microscopy combined with density functional theory calculations indicate that the formation of ultrasmall, densely distributed Ru nanoparticles stems from strong metal-support interactions between the Ru phase and the perovskite substrate.
